Hyper-V creates hidden Snapshots - Howto merge

First of all, is there a possibility to give information about a bug to microsoft without paying?
As I haven't found one (which would be really NOT customerfriendly) and I hope to help others I will post my problem and solution here.
Today our productive server which is a vm on a hyper-v host ran out of hdd space which was quite confusing for us as the assigned size of the disk is much less then the space the physical disk on the host has.
The hyper-v manager didn't show any snapshots. In the filesystem we saw a vhd AND a avhd file, the avhd file being the newer one and causing the error as it took all the space left on the disk.
We do NOT know where this avhd file comes from (maybe microsoft or some of you know how this could have happened?) but here comes the solution how I managed to merge the vhd and the avhd file.
I created another snapshot. So now I had two avhd files and one vhd file. Now I also saw at least the LAST snapshot in the hyper-v manager. I deleted this last snapshot in the hyper-v-manager (DO NOT DELETE THE AVHD FILE IN THE FILESYSTEM!) and started merging
the snapshot and the vhd. In this merging process also the hidden snapshot is merged and both avhd files dissappear and diskspace is free again.
Reserve some time for the merging process - it took me about one hour.
I'm quite alarmed about that now as we are just bying a new server and wanted to use hyper-v again. Would be really helpful to know where this hidden snapshots come from and how to avoid them so we can decide if we should stick to our decision to use hyper-v.
Also I feel very unhappy with the fact that there iseems to be no possibility to contact microsoft without paying even if there seems to be a bug in their OS.
Best regards,
Tina

Hi Tina, There are a few possibilities here.  The Virtual Server could have been moved from a previous Version of Hyper-v, leaving the AVHD file inplace, this wouldn't show up in the new hyper-V console.
Or some backup solutions create independent snapshots, which are using to backup online Virtual servers
Have you moved your Virtual Servers recently to new hardware ? you don't mention what version of Server your are using 2012 ? 2008R2 , 2012R2 ?.
Also if you delete a snapshot on 2008R2, the snapshot can stay there until you power off the virtual server. at which point it then automatically merges back into the original VHD.
When you delete a snapshot, the .avhd files that store the snapshot data remain in the storage location until the virtual machine is shut down, turned off, or put into a saved state. As a result, when you delete a snapshot, you will need to put
the production virtual machine into one of those states at some point to be able to complete the safe removal of the snapshot.

  • How do I create a Snapshot without testing query?

I'm working in an environment where the connection to the database server is done through a VPN that is sometimes broken and I have to wait for some time until it is restored. Other times, the database server is just down and in maintenance.
In the meantime, I have to work with Director installed in a local virtual machine in my laptop.
So, now I'm trying to develop some EDQ processes when there is no connection to the database, I'm unable to save snapshots because they require a test to occur (clicking in the Test button) before saving them, even if I'm providing a full SQL query to snapshot. I think it's because Director needs to know stuff like the data types of the columns to initialize properly the fields in the process.
The problem is that I can't stop working just because there is no VPN. I should be able to create the processes and test them later when connection to the database is restored. I can do a lot of stuff (I can even copy-paste snapshots!) but I can't change nor create new ones, and that blocks me constantly.
How can I do a snapshot save without database connection and have Director asking me the datatypes instead of trying to guess them from a "Test"?

    Hi,
You can't create a snapshot without a connection to the database. A connection is needed when a snapshot definition is created in order to retrieve the column names and data types. As a solution to your problem, why not use data interfaces? Create a data interface that is of the required shape and refer to this in your processes (instead of the snapshot). You can then create mappings to different sources of data, e.g. snapshots, reference data, etc. You can test your processes when you're offline using a reference data mapping.

  • How to Create a Table with Merge and partitions in HANA

    Hi,
What is the best way to create a Table with MERGE and PARTITION and UNLOAD PRIORITIES.
Any body can you please give me some examples.
    Regards,
    Deva

    Ok,
    1) the UNLOAD PRIORITY has nothing to do with the order of data loads in your ETL process
    2) Unloading of columns will happen automatically. Don't specify anything specific for the tables, then SAP HANA will take care about it
    3) Not sure where you get your ideas from, but there is no need to manually "flush" tables or anything like that. SAP HANA will take care of memory housekeeping.
    4) Partitioning and how to specify it for tables has been largely documented. Just read up on it.
    5) Delta Merge will happen automatically, as long as you don't prevent it (e.g. by trying to outsmart the mergedog rules)
Seriously, I get the impressions that this list of requirements is based on some hear-say and lack of actual information and experience with SAP HANA. There are a couple of extensive discussions on data loading optimization available here in SCN and on SAPHANA.COM. Please read those first.
All this had been discussed broadly a couple of times.

  • Creating mailing labels using merge with Pages

Something I can do easily in Word seems impossible in Pages 09 (which I've begun using full time instead of Word and find it much more stable and easy to work with).
I have a postcard size document which fits on a third of an 81/2 X 11 page. So I have three repeats on the page. Follow so far?
I want to merge people's names into the postcard - three different names on a page. What I can't figure out is how to tell the merge to go to the next records for the second and third cards on each page! Easy to do in Word - I just drag and drop <Next Record> before the merge fields forpostcards 2 & 3.
There doesn't seem to be that possibility in Pages. I get three postcards the same on each page - the next three (the second record) all the same on the second page, and so on for each subsequent page. I don't want three identical postcards per page! I want cards with three different names on the same page.
Does anybody have an idea how this might be done or do I just do it in Word?

    Peter
I was able to track down the script. Thanks.
Definitely a complicated way of doing something that's relatively straightforward in Word. Guess I'll have to stick to Word for creating these kinds of merge documents! Too bad, really.

  • Can I create a snapshot from view?

I am using Oracle 9iLite Server for my application on Pocket PC 2002 based PDA. Because my oracle center database table is very large for creating a snapshot and it will take a long time to sync. • Creating a snapshot without primary keys

    Hi,
I would like to create a snapshot for a table that does not have a primary key. I've read the thread
"Re: creating snapshots without a primary key??"
from Mar 24, 2003, which seems to indicate that this is allowed if the snapshot is not updatable. However, even when I disable the "Updatable?" option, I still get the following error:
    WTG-20502 Packaging Wizard Failed. 500
    CONS-10032: Publication item: WTGPI_10012 cannot
be updatable, primary keys for xyz.abc not found.
BTW, the Oracle9i Lite Developer's Guide for Windows 32 is really thin in this area. In particular, the description of the Updatable feature is the following:
This check box defines the snapshot to be created
    as updatable.
That description has a lot of unmet potential.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hello,
If you create a snapshot that has no primary key, you have to check the option "complete refresh".
Oracle uses the primary key to track changes for the "partial refresh" option (only send changes back and forth).

  • Creating Hidden iView to get refresh UWL task list

    Hi @ll,
i would like to know how can we create hidden iView to update task list in UWL using refreshUwlBackend event.

    Hi,
You cannot use an invisible WD Java iView because the application is not executed if the iView is not visible.
I don't know if it would work with other types of iViews.

  • Grants for a procedure to create a snapshot

    Hi Forum,
I'm struggling with identifiying the necessary system rights to enable a procedure to create a snapshot using execute immediate.
Is anybody aware of the grants which have to be assigned to the user owning that proc?
    Thx for any help,
    Juergen

    Hi,
    sure:
I'd like to execute a statement such as the following:
    Execute Immediate ('
    create materialized view test_mv
    start with sysdate
    next round(sysdate + 1) + 2/24
    as <select-statement>');
the statement works well if I send it to the database directly but fails with error 'insufficient rights' when executed from within a proc using the above kind of statement.
I granted 'CREATE ANY SNAPSHOT' to the owner of the procedure already.

  • Reviewing steps to create a snapshot

I am sure this is dead simple, but I cannot see how to do it.
I have just editted an image, initially by cropping, then making some general tweaks. I saved this as a Snapshot.
After some though, I decided I wanted to change the crop, so I went back to the original image, and re-cropped it. Fine, But now I wanted to re-apply some of the changes made in the Snapshot. How can I see the steps that I went through to create the snapshot? I saw Update with Current Settings on the sub-menu (right click) for the snapshot, but wasn't sure if that was what i wanted to do.
Can someone point me in the right direction pls.
    Thanks

Thanks for your quick responses. What I didn't make clear in my questions was this... When I say I wanted to re-crop, I want to re-crop the original image to include a part that is not in the cropped image. Not so much include more in the crop, just re-position it. That is why I went back to the original image, as this looked to be the only way to see all of the original image.
Sorry to have not made that clear in the first place.
I guess a more ideal solution would be able to adjust a crop on a snapshot, and by adjust I mean increase, decrease, or re--position the crop.
Anyway, I think therefore, the question I should have asked is this. Having created a Snapshot, how can I reload this, so I can continue my workflow from where that snapshot finished? (This would enable me to see the steps to reach that snapshot).

  • Restored Hyper-V Virtual Machine Snapshots by error

    Hi Everyone,
We are facing a disaster !!, One of our team restored an old  Hyper-V Virtual Machine Snapshot by error which erased our recent databases. So i'am wondering is there a miracle to restore that data. Like we can flashback to 3 hour later.
    Help is very appreciated !!
    Yasser Emad

    Hi Yasser,
Unless a snapshot was taken just before reverting back to the old snapshot, or a backup exists, I'm afraid I don't believe there is.
Is this a checkpoint from failover cluster manager or SCVMM?
    Kind Regards

  • MS Azure Recovery Services Agent was unable to create a snapshot - 0x186C2

Hello in the Azure Backup forum,
We use Microsoft Azure Backup on a VM in Azure. We have scheduled a backup for everyday. However, so far it has not been able to backup anything it fails with:
"Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent was unable to create a snapshot of the selected volume. Please try the operation again. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support. (0x186C2) "
and in the Windows event log it is found that:
    Event ID 20 - volsnap:
" a volume snapshot of C:\ was interrupted - free space could not be calculated " - this has been translated from Danish.
Furthermore when I try doing a manual backup via volume shadow copy services I get the following error:
When troubleshooting and researching I find hotfixes for this type of error for Windows 2003 Server but none for Windows 2012 R2 or specifically for Microsoft Azure Backup.
Any suggestions and help will be highly appreciated :-)
Looking forward to hear from you.

    Hi,
Please change the Shadow Copy Storage limit for the System drive to NO LIMIT and check. You may refer:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/e8cac987-e3b9-4ac1-9247-a72e1f953036/was-unable-to-create-a-snapshot-of-the-selected-volume-0x186c2?forum=windowsbackup
Also, I see that in that error message it states about Free space could not be calculated. Please make sure that you have enough free space (atleast equivalent to that size of snapshot).

  • Creating Hidden Partitions

    Hello...
...Does anyone know how to create a hidden partition on a Macintosh computer? More specifically, does anyone know how to install the Mac OS in a hidden partition on a Macintosh computer? If I understand correctly, it is possible to hide files and render them invisible (are not the crucial OS system files already hidden?) by placing a period (".") at the beginning of the file name (for example, ".filename"). I have read that it is possible to hide a Mac OS partition by placing a period before the partition volume name, although my attempts to do so have been unsuccessful. I may not be doing so correctly. Perhaps one must do so from the root level account or by using "terminal"?. Yet, it is possible to render hidden/invisible files visible, possibly even allowing access to the file, using the Finder (if one knows how). I do not believe this strategy of placing a period at the beginning of a file or volume name offers the same level of protection as the standard method of creating hidden partitions on a Windows based PC, which renders the hidden volume inaccessible if I remember correctly (even if it is rendered visible), unless one were to access the drive using a repair disk (for example). Any assistance with this issue will be sincerely appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance,
    -Phantasy
P.S. = Please forgive me if any of the preceding statements are incorrect. I am new to the Mac OS, as well as computers in a way, although I have used computers to a very limited extent over the past 20+ years.

For Boot camp running XP, it is required to create partition using the boot camp installer since the xp won't install if you create a partition for it using other than boot camp.
What you could do maybe you can split your HD into 2 partition of HFS+ 20 GB for os x and the rest is blank.
And when you run boot camp, point it to create windows partittion on the blank partition 10 GB and after you done with all xp installation, go back to os x and re-format the rest of blank partition with ms-dos (fat 32) format.
But remember when you got 60Gb HD, you only getting around 54 Gb something so the size might be not as ideal as you want.
And in my opinion 20 Gb for mac and 10 gb for xp is a little to low, not to mention the need of free space for virtual memory to work on.
I rather have 25 gb for mac os x, 15 gb for xp, and the rest for data. Or half of hd for os x and half for xp but formatted using fat 32 (if they give you the option during installation) and you can use that xp partition as you mac os x data folder as well since os x can access fat 32.
    Good Luck.
