Hyper-V guest OS task manager reports more memory used than expected

I have a Hyper-V node with 32 GB of system memory and 6 cores (12 logical processors with hyperthreading) running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.  On this node I have a virtual machine with 4 GB of system memory and two logical processors running Windows
Server 2008 R2 Standard.
On the virtual machine, Task Manager show that 3.62 GB of memory are being used and 109 MB are free.  This is despite the fact that nothing is installed or running on the vm except the operating system.  The memory usage for all processes for all
users as reported by Task Manager is under 100 MB.
Any ideas on what can be causing such a huge discrepancy between the memory usage reported by Task Manager and reality?  The host OS reports 9.8 GB out of 32 GB memory usage (expected since several VMs are running on the host), but I would not think
that the guest OS would be pegged.

Busy two weeks.  Sorry I didn't respond sooner.
I should clarify that I was not running Task Manager on the host machine, but rather on the guest OS.  Task manager on the VM was reporting incorrect memory usage for the VM.  Task Manager on the host machine was reporting correct information for
the host.
I would expect that a guest OS should have accurate metrics for its own memory usage as this is usually the case with visualization solutions (Sun VirtualBox, Citrix, VMWare).  Interestingly, although TaskManager on the guest OS is reporting incorrect
(3.62 GB) memory usage, the Hyper-V Manager shows reasonable and likely correct (574 MB) memory usage.  Hyper-V Manager shows 598 MB of "Assigned Memory" and 574 MB of "Memory Demand", whereas TaskManager on the guest OS shows 3.62 GB of memory used.
I would have expected Task Manager on the guest OS to show 4 GB available, 574 MB used, about 3.4 GB free.

Installed iTunes 11.0.4.4 64-bit version.  Now windows 8 pro 64-bit reports iTunes as 32-bit in task manager.  Why?  Both my computer and operating system are 64-bit.  ITunes is not running in compatibility mode.  All my music files are MP3.  I uninstalled iTunes and downloaded iTunes64setup.exe from apple and still having the same result.  This was a clean install by-the-way.

  • Closing and restarting firefox task manager reports firefox already running

When I exit firefox and later try to restart it without rebooting, task manager says it is already running and I have to close it before restarting. Task manager is reporting that 99% of its time is spent running Firefox.

See [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]], in your case it appears that Firefox is not closing properly, so the [[Firefox hangs#Hang at exit|Firefox hangs at exit]] article may be relevant.

  • Neither Firefox nor the profile manager will start. In my task manager, the process is using 50% of my cpu but does nothing. I love browsing with firefox, how can I fix this?

I've tried restarting my computer, the I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, then uninstalling, erasing all firefox files and folders, then restarting and reinstalling. I've also tried opening the profile manager to change my profile. After reinstalling a few times and trying to open the profile manager before launching firef0x, I got the firefox has crashed window and the process in the task manager is still using 50% of my cpu. The most recent expunge then re-download pops up a "file is corrupt" error and won't even install the program.

Kill those processes that you are seeing, including any plugincontainer.exe, only once firefox has stopped running should you try to update it.
Totally unexpected instances of firefox running may sometimes be the result of malware activity.

  • I installed firefox 4 but whenever I try to open it task manager reports it starting but the browser window does not open/show.

Yeah basically what I stated, but I have re-installed it, re-downloaded the intallation software, and everything i coudl think of to see if that would make it work, but nothing has.

Hi, i had the exact same problem with FF4, it got so bad that it would "not respond" near enough every click of the mouse, i could not find help anywhere, so many solutions from people who reproted the same problem, but none of them worked,, malwarebytes and kaspesky both reported no viruses, i started FF4 in safe mode, the same thing, i then started it over and over uninstalling one addon ata a time until i removed all of my addons, but it still kept happening, fortunately i found my own solution, i upgraded to FF5.5 Beta, that was 3 days ago, ive not had a problem since, i hope that this solution may work for you too.
it would appear that this is just a FF4 problem, good luck.

  • Disk Management reporting capacity significantly less than Explorer or Diskpart.exe

Hi, I'm having some odd issues related to Backups failing due to a lack of space on my server, and think there might be something related to the fact that Disk Management is reporting my main partition size as much smaller than it really is. I'm including
an image as it's much easier to explain. Basically, Disk Management shows the partition (which is GPT) as 250mb, but everything else shows it correctly as 1.6TB.
The partitions are left the way the machine shipped from Dell, but I did format it a couple of weeks ago and installed a fresh copy of Windows Server 2012 R2. Sadly I'm not sure if the partitions were like this under Server 2008-- I can't imagine they shows
up like this as I never had any issues so I don't know. Maybe something in the initial install went wrong and tagged the partition incorrectly?)
I've tried to do "extend filesystem" in diskpart to no avail. I'm a bit concerned about touching anything and possibly losing data, unless I have to. That said, this server is in production but currently only as a domain controller and could be
easily demoted and wiped out and started over (with fresh partitions), if I had to. I'd prefer to just figure out a solution to fix this (and hopefully fix the backups in the process since they seem to be running out of space-- as Windows Server Backup only
    sees the 250mb size!)
    Thanks for any ideas!
    Justin

    Hi Justin,
    1.  Have you tried Rescan Disks in Disk Manager: Click Action, and then click
    Rescan Disks.
    2.  I also recommend you to make this disk to connect to other operating system to check if the issue is caused by OS or Disk.
    3.  Have you set space limit on the disk like Quota management.
    4.  Finally, the last method is formatting the disk(please note backup your data before), then reallocate the partition.
    Best Regards,
    Anna

I have tried the following steps:-
    1) Upgrade to 6.0.2 and update to latest plugin/add-on
    2) Uninstall and Install only FireFox
    3) Uninstall, Remove FireFox Folder and Install only FireFox
    4) Uninstall, Remove FireFox Folder, Delete Registry and Install only FireFox
All of the action above does not even resolved it. CPU will still Spike to 78%.
Average CPU usage when submitting a request is about 46% ~78%
By the way, I am running on Windows XP SP3, and 4GB RAM.
Please advice what can be done.

  • Extended notifications: more items selected than expected

i have configured SWNCONIFG for only one task and i know how many instances there were created in the system. when i run SWN_SELSEN and check WF/NOTIFICATIONS in SLG1, however, i see workitems ids that are for different tasks. i have removed all the prior task filter configurations and started from scratch, but the 'old' items keep coming back and some of them seem random as i don't recall ever creating any tasks for them.
is there a cleanup utility or do i have tor resort to a surgical procedure directly on the SWN_NOTIF table?
i'm only trying to avoid surprises during the go-live.

    Gregory,
did you ever get an answer to this question.  I am seeing the exact same issue despite having filters configured to only pull one specific task...i still see others tasks in SWN_NOTIF and i can see from the application logs that the system is attempting to send those notifications.
if you have resolved what was your ultimate solution to this?

  • 5.0 RC: slower and uses more memory

So far, I can't approve the promise of JDK 5.0 (RC): it is not only slower but also takes up more memory! Startup time is also the same compared to 1.4.2_05.
I tested with a server application running the same task several times in sequence. The task does a little JDBC access, some calculations and some heavy XML processing and FOP generating. I checked it twice but running the server with the 5.0 RC server HotSpot took considerably longer than with the 1.4.2_05 server HotSpot VM: 10 - 30 % longer!!! As I log memory usage after each task, the 5.0 test also showed slightly more memory used than the 1.4.2_05 version. (On Windows 2000 computer)
I wonder if this is a joke from Sun or if the RC is not optimized/has debug code enabled???

I hope that the final version could ship better optimized than the RC version - it's very slow even in a Pentium 4 machine. Is there any debug info left in jvm.dll anymore?
They even use Intel's VTune profiler (you can check such affirmation by reading J2SE SDK 1.4 SCSL Source code) but apparently they use the good old Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 compiler, instead of using Intel's C++ 7.X Optimizing Compiler. (Use the following options for getting a hotspot.log file that gives you a lot of informations about compiling: java -XX:+UnlockDiagnosticVMOptions -XX:+LogCompilation ) The Intel's compiler could speed up the JIT compiler speed and the interpreted code speed. (Well, I never tried to compile SCSL code with Intel's C++ compiler and check my assertion...)

  • Multiple instances of explorer.exe running in task manager

I got a dropper trojan virus on my computer that microsoft security essencials do not recognized but after running "superantispyware" antivirus I got discover it and delete it. After that, I still could find the infected files in my
administrator folders as .temp files and I just erased them. After that my computer started crashing and runing several instances of explorer.exe in the task manager with different memory values, some of them ascending to 350,000. I have set up my computer
to run just the basic services, I have tried windows in safe mode, ran other antivirus programs but still it is performing the same. As far as I have noticed other unusual process present are host.dll, dllhost.exe, and logonUI.exe. Any idea about it? Thanks
    in advance for your help.

I have the same issue. It started about a month ago when I was filling out a form online and had to quit and close the window.  My system got very buggy (can't remember details), flashing, then really slow.  Found a bunch of explorer.exe instances
in Task Manager.  Ran Security Essentials and several other anti-viruses, nothing found.
    Running Win7 Pro, sp1, 64-bit, CoreI5, 4Gb Ram
Restored system to a previous version, didn't work
Restored last system image, didn't work
Used System Repair Disk - ran Memory Diagnostic.  Said it would give me report after reboot.  Never saw a report after reboot. But only one instance of explorer.exe in task manager at that point.  Took disk out, rebooted normally.  After
20 minutes or so, the multiple instances were back.
Used Repair Disk again, ran Memory Diagnostic. Again, no report after reboot (leaving disk in machine both times), but only one instance running again.
Did this a few times with the same result, so now leaving disk in system and always boot from it.
Ran Security Essentials again, found that rovnix virus, removed, ran again, found it again.
Ran search for instances and found many.  Here's an example:
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe
    C:\Windows\winsxs\wow64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17567_none_b9fc4815c4e292b5

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64
When I check properties on the now single one on Task Manager, this is what it shows:
    C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17567_none_afa79dc39081d0ba\explorer.exe
    C:\Windows\explorer.exe
I was going to reinstall entire system, but was from an Anytime Upgrade which now says it's invalid.  Much more to story on that (calls to MS support, etc.).

  • [LV 5.1.1/NT4.0] Using Task Manager stats within LV?

Is it possible to access information from the NT Task Manager; CPU load,
memory usage, swap usage, etc. within LV? I am doing some stability testing
and would like to record this information as VIs start and finish and as
data are being continuously streamed to disk. Goal is to identify places
where the CPU load gets too high, thereby risking DAQ faults and other

I suppose there is some sort of DLL that will show you this info.
I dont know what it is, but using some of the kernal tools, e
    tc from the MS
site you should be able to get there.
I would suggest that you try the profiler before you get too far. It can show
you mem, usage, run time, etc. It is found under Project->Show Profile Window.
This could help you narrow the search to only VIs that have potential problems.
It does (just like any profile tool) take resources from the system so the
    timing is
more of a relative time as opposed to an absolute time.
I would definitely start with this tool..
