Hyper-V hangs forever at Server 2012 reboot

When I reboot the host OS (Dell server), it tries to shut down the VM. There is a single VM running server 2012 with Exchange set up. The reboot process hangs for about an hour with the screen showing "Shutting down service: Hyper-V Virtual Machine
Management". The activity indicator circle continues to go around.
I've noticed a couple other weird things this past week. When trying to load up wbadmin (host) to see the status of the last scheduled Windows Server Backup job, MMC just sit's there for hours "loading data". I have to manually kill it. I also
am unable to uninstall anything. It sit's in the "calculating disk size" stage and I have to manually kill the process.
I ran a SFC and it found and corrected a corrupted file(s). I wanted to see what people thought could be causing this super-long reboot process. Server has 32gb ram, 16 of which assigned to the Exchange VM. No line of business app's, no SQL or other apps.
It's an incredibly simple domain with 8 users.
The only complication is that the Exchange VM is set up to replicate to another machine that is running Hyper-V Server as the host OS. This replication has been problematic, requiring me to manually sync is several times. But the connection is solid, via
a cat5e cable in the same room as the primary server (till the off-site office and a VPN is ready to hold the secondary server).

Hi RedRules,
I don’t found the similar issue, base on my experience, it most possible may your disk corrected, Could you try
to move the vm to another drive and confirm there don’t have the corrupted block on your disk.
You can refer the following related thread to do the disk check:

  • Numerous Explorer.exe processes run on Server 2012 reboot causing server to hang

I have recently installed Server 2012 as a Domain Controller.  AD, DNS and WINS services as well as Hyper-V manager.
I am facing a very strange issue which does not occur every time I reboot the machine (but on most times).
The machine boots to Windows and hangs, I can notice a large number of explorer.exe processes (that start without any user intervention). The server hangs completely and I am unable to kill the processes manually.
I have to restart the server remotely via shutdown /i.
On reboot the server works fine, If i reboot the server by switching off the hardware manually the same issue may occur..
Any idea what might be causing this behaviour?
    Thanks and Regards

    Hi Carlos082,
I would recommend you to check the event logs which generated during the server hangs.
Please also try to set up a Performance Monitor log and let it run for a while.  At the very minimum, add the counters for Memory, Process, Processor and System.  The length of time that you need to let it run will depend on how long the system
takes to hang (assuming that this is happening repeatedly).  Set the interval so that you can capture at least a hundred samples over the life of the log.  Any low memory condition should be readily apparent - especially if it is a steady leak.
    Finally, follow the steps in
KB Article 244139 to prepare the system to capture a complete memory dump for analysis if needed.
To troubleshoot the server hangs, please follow this article:

    I hope this helps.

  • Windows Server 2012 reboots while removing the Hyper-V vSwitch.

I have a WIn2k12 server with Hyper-V running. While removing the vSwitch configured in Hyper-V, the server got rebooted. In the event logs below mentioned error was notices.
he computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x00000019 (0x0000000000000024, 0x00000000000000f2, 0x0000000000000001, 0xfffffa800b9ba6c0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 072314-20248-01.
The Windows has generated a MEMORY.dump which is ~570MB in size. Is it possible to analyze the MEMORY.dump and find the cause for a server reboot.
Can you please someone help me to narrow down the root cause of this issue and how to avoid this issue in the future.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I analyses the the MEMORY.DMP using the WinDbg. Provided the debug output below. Will this help you to narrow down the root cause and let me know if any similar issue faced by someone else.

  • Hyper-V Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 VM cannot define static IP address

    Hi,
I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

  • Adding Hyper-V features to Windows Server 2012

I have already set up a virtual machine with Windows server 2012, when I try to add Hyper-V features it prompts error:
Hyper-V cannot be installed: The processor does not have required visualization capability.
    The VM properties is:
    Memory 1GB
    Processor 2
Thanks to help me on this,
    Zara

Confirmimg brian response, the CPU needs virtualization features for Hyper-V to be enabled.
The following link shows the hyper- V requirement for Hyper-v 2008 R2 (also true for 2012)
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731898.aspx
If you want to test hyper-v inside VMs, you can download VMware workstation. There is an interesting feature (only for test purposes) that can let the vcpu inherit virtualization features, that you can enable via the VM settings. You will however notice
    performances hit.

  • Hyper-v Role in Windows Server 2012 foundation and Essentials

    Hello,
I have seen that the two low cost version of Windows Server 2012 essential and Foundation) will not support hyper-v. Can you please tell me what it means exactly :
Can you please tell me what is possible :
-The server can not be installed as a hyper-v  guest (probably yes)
-The hyper-v role can not be installed on the server (so I have to rely on vmware)?
    - Hyper-v role can be installed but there is no free license included with the server.
    Thank you
    Marc

I suppose then, you would have to install Windows 8 and Hyper-V as your guest or core.
Then run your Server 2012 Foundation under Win8.  which has 512GB Memory Limit.
It seems asinine that you cannot install this role on Foundation, but seemingly you could work around it with Win8.  (Or Sun Virtual Box (free) (or VmWare(Free).
So load up a dozen Win8Pro virutal sessions on that Win8 VirtualBox with up to 512GB Memory and Create your own Ghetto Remote Desktop Server with Foundation and Windows 8.   ;)
What good is it if your can't run Hyper-V and Remote desktop services?  Those are the two apps small business need most.  But Microsoft strips it out, calls it a DEAL  (Essentials and Foundation) , yet if you want the good stuff, you're gonna
have to buy Server 2012 Standard anyhow, + the CALs.
So you are hooked into this "deal" by Microsoft Special Offer.   Its special alright, because you get to buy it twice.  The stripped down version that come with your server, then the full version when you discover Foundatoin and Essentials gives
you AD, and thats it.  Nothing Else.  No "deal"
    Remember:
All you get with Foundation or Essentials is AD and Group Policy.
You cannot load RDP on Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange on a DC, or Foundation or Essentials
You cannot load Exchange and RDP on the same box.
You cannot have Remote Web Apps if you load RDP on your DC.
You cannot win with Microsoft.  No worthwhile "deal" has ever come out of the city of Redmond.
The internet is a one-way money pipeline to Microsoft.
Its three times the work, three times the cost and requires three servers licenses to do with 2012, what you could do with one 2008R2 license.
Might as well purchase 2 Server 2013 Standard Editions if you want:
    1.) Active Directory
2.) Remote Desktop and Remote Apps
    3.) Your own Exchange Server
You are better off installing a NAS if all you need is a file server.
Why bother with Foundation or Essentials?  Its a "Gimmick-ware"

I need to install the Hyper-V Management tools onto a Server 2012 VM. However it won't let me install the management tools because it says hypervisor is already running. I've done this before from PowerShell but I can't remember the exact command that I

  • Cannot create Hyper-V external virtual switch Server 2012 R2

    Hi,
I am unable to create an external virtual switch on server 2012 R2.  I have two Broadcom NICS bridged on a DC fully functional now.  I can install Hyper-V but the option is grayed out to create an external switch.  I try binding it to the

Am I correct in assuming that I cannot use Hyper-V on this server if the two NICS are bridged?

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.
    /Joseph

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!

  • Requirement to have 3 hyper-v in Windows Server 2012 R2 Std

    Hi,
I want to configure three Hyper-V in my Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
    1. ERP System
    2. Mail Server
    3. AD
What requirement or license do I need to have?
    Thank You.

as per my knowledge if you want to use 3 Application you can run one application on Host and other 2 Application on virtual instances.
    that is not accurate.
As per MS documentation, if you run two virtual instances, the host (hypervisor) may only be used for hypervisor functions, it may not be used for applications.
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/virtual-licensing.aspx
    Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
All physical processors need to be licensed. Each license covers up to two physical processors.
You may run the server software in one physical OSE and in up to two virtual OSEs for each license you assign. If you run all of the permitted instances the instance in the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs.

  • Hyper V mouse input not captured over RDC on Server 2012 Solved

    Hi,
I am using Hyper V and can't click a button due to mouse input not capturing. I have read similar posts in this website and not found the answer yet. I am connecting to the server using RDC and running hyper-v there.
When my machine is running, I have checked in settings and all of my integration services are enabled. If I click Action and press Install Integration Services Setup Disk then it loads the disc but I don't know how to run that disk, or don't know if I have
to if the check boxes for all the install integration services are ticked.
When I physically go to my server and run the Hyper V from there, I don't get the "Mouse Input is not captured" message when I click in the virtual machine but even when I try and press the button nothing happens
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Nick

"OS is Windows Server 2012 Standard."
OS of the VM is Windows Server 2012?  OS of the Hyper-V host is Windows Server 2012?  That is, your whole environment is Windows Server 2012?  Just making sure because it have seen it too often in these forums that after trying to validate
one thing after another, the person finally states something like, "I'm running Hyper-V in a VM on <somebody's> hypervisor, and my VMs are not working correctly in Hyper-V".
If your host and VM are both Windows Server 2012, then the Integration Services are built in.  Windows Server 2012 actually has them as part of the OS.
What is the operating system from which you are trying to connect?  Are you trying to connect directly to the VM, or are you first using RDP to connect to the Hyper-V and then using RDP to connect to the VM?  I'm basically just trying to find out
your exact configuration so we have a better understanding of where we might concentrate.

  • RemoteFX issue when running Multipoint Server 2012 Premium as VM on Hyper-V

I have a server setup running Hyper-V 2012.  I made a Multipoint 2012 Premium VM and added RemoteFX.  After installing I went to Device Manager on the VM and noticed that the display adapter was showing as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and
there was an unknown device which I assume is the RemoteFX 3D adapter.  I updated the integration services and ran Windows Updates, but still cannot get RemoteFX to show up properly in the VM.
Does Windows Multipoint Server 2012 not support RemoteFX when running as a VM?  I can't really run this on bare metal since I am looking at supporting more than 20 stations and therefore would need to run multiple instances virtualized on
    the same server running Hyper-V.

The server I have setup for this test is a Dell R720 and the video card is an AMD FirePro S7000. I am using the latest stable AMD FirePro driver (ver. 13.352.1006.1001).
I also went ahead and setup a Dell OptiPlex 7010 with an AMD Radeon 5450 (which is DirectX11).  I setup Server 2012 Hyper-V and again with Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V.  Both times I was unable to add the RemoteFX 3D adapter.  I am beginning to
think that it is not possible.
Are you running Multipoint 2012 server virtualized on top of Hyper-V with RemoteFX enabled in the virtualized server (and showing so in Device Manager)?

  • Problems PXE booting Gen 2 Virtual Machines after Upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2

    My Current Setup:
I have two virtual machines set up with Hyper V on my Windows Server 2012 Server.
VM1: Configured to boot from an ISO file and runs Clonezilla server.
VM2: Configured to PXE boot using a legacy network adapter, and with a passthrough 250Gb hard disk.
These two VMs are connected to an external Virtual Switch, which allows physical machines to PXE boot to the Clonezilla server.
For the past few months I have been using this setup for two purposes:
    1. To clone physical machines to the Clonezilla virtual server (as a backup).
    2. To restore those image to the second VM if I find that need to get access to the files on the original image..
This has worked perfectly, except for the fact that the speed of the legacy network adapter on the second VM (which is required to PXE boot) is very slow. But I know this is because of the limitations in how the legacy adapter works...
    Now my problem:
I found out that Gen 2 VMs allow you to PXE boot without having use a legacy network adapter, allowing me to image back to the VM faster. So I upgraded the Server to Server 2012 R2 . I then created the same two virtual machines on the R2 server. I can still
PXE boot the Gen 1 VM to the Clonezilla Server but I cannot get the Gen 2 VMs to PXE boot properly. They get an IP address from the Clonezilla Server but then just stop with the following screen. (note: I have disabled the Secure Boot).
Are Gen 2 VMs unable to pull down images from anything other than a WDS Server?

    Hi J,
    >>Unfortunately WDS is not a solution for us as it is dependent on the PC being part of a domain
If you would like to make the client not join to the domain, please check the box before “Do not join the client to a domain after an installation.”  In addition, make sure not to set the client to the domain in the unattend file and do not prestage

  • Dashboard Exchange-Integration - Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials

    Hello (at) all,
i try to integrate a Exchange 2013 Server. Essentials and Standard Server are both virtualized via Hyper-V 2012. Everytime I try to integrate it gives me an error that no Exchange Server could be found. Exchange works by the way. The Essentials Server is

Hi I am having the same issue,
        1- Hyper-V
        2- Virtual Windows Server 2012 R2
One of the 2012 R2 have the Essentials Experience the other one is 2012 R2 plain(Exchange 2013)
Issues that  I have are that when trying to use the Dashboard integration it gives an error that is not finding any exchange server on the network.
And the other one is that the Exchange Service Accounts are all at the Users in the Dashboard this didnt happened on the Essentials R1.
Any patch or update please would be great if not I would have to go back to Essentials R1 with 2012 R2 wich was working perfect!!

  • Migrating Virtual Machine - Error "Failed to Complete planned Virtual Machine at migration destination" - Server 2012 R2

So to get started I'll give a bit of background on the Infrastructure we are currently working with.
    We have:
2 x Hyper-V Hosts (Currently 2 for testing migrations, this will increase once we have a working platform)
2 x File Servers acting as storage nodes for VHD Storage
    1 x Physical DC
The Hyper-V Hosts both have Server 2012 R2 Datacentre installed, the rest have Server 2012 R2 Standard installed and configured.
We currently have some VM's sitting on one host and I am in the process of simulations to make sure live migration is working between the two HV Hosts (This is a non-clustered setup), Everything is on the domain and i've been using a domain admin account
to administer these servers for these simulations.
We plan on having VHD's stored on FS01 and FS02, basically our primary host is going to have all primary servers on and then those vhd's will be stored on FS01 and then all secondary/redundant servers are going to be on the second host and vhd's stored on
    FS02 - Simple enough?
I can perform Data migrations between both FS01 and FS02 using the Hyper-V Management tool on both hosts without any issues. The issue I am currently encountering is when I perform a migration of the "Virtual Machine Only". Now, this simulation
works when the data for the VM is stored on either of the hosts using UNC pathway, no hiccups at all, I receive the below error when ever the data is stored on either FS01 or FS02 using again, UNC pathway (These VM's power on and work perfectly otherwise while
    hosted on FS01/02).
    Error:
I've researched this quite a lot and have gone through countless solutions other people are having.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/5780d041-4036-404e-9f33-8abe025bfe2b/hyperv-failed-to-create-external-configuration-store-general-access-denied-error-ox80070005?forum=winserverhyperv (Which
took me to the below link)
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2249906 (This solution didn't work, in fact i couldn't even get CMD to run the command)
    Now, with
THIS SOLUTION that I attempted I worked with adding all the hosts and FS01 (because nothing is on FS02 at the moment) in an attempt to get the VM Migration only working between hosts and still receive the same error.
As a testing option, I Moved the Data for the VM back to one of the hosts using UNC pathway and then performed a live migration to the other host no problems, then performed a data migration back to FS01 and that also worked. I don't particularly want to
do this with production VM's as I have at least 6 x 780GB vhd's that need to be moved and this would move them more than once, obviously not ideal.
If someone is able to help me out, or at least point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

I did try adding the 'Everyone' permission for the testing of migration to see if it was a permission issue which didn't help at all before I'd posted this article.
This ended up being a Computer Delegation issue, I'd neglected to add the 'cifs' (SMB Protocol) on ALL servers for ALL servers in the cluster, I didn't add that permission in my FS01 or FS02 servers for each other or the hyper-v servers that were in operation.
I've now started our production Hyper-V Servers and they haven't skipped a beat since adding in those delegations correctly to all servers as a "Full mesh" type setup.
Thanks for responding in any case :)
This is the permission I am referring to if anyone else has the issue:
    AD>Computers>{Name of Computer}
I also performed an active directory replication forcefully with:
    repadmin /replicate <Target> <Source> dc=Domain,dc=local
    Run as a powershell command.
