Hyper-V host 1Gbps NIC negotiated at 100 Mbps when used for Virtual Switch

Hi all,
Hoping someone can shed some light on this one as I’ve been trying to hunt down a solution for a week now.
Setup
HP ProLiant ML350 G6 with HP NC326i PCIe Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapter network adapters
Windows Server 2008 R2 Core with only the Hyper-V role installed
SBS 2011 installed as guest
Port 1 on Dual port NIC configured a physical port or management of Host only
Port 2 on Dual port NIC configured for use as an External Virtual Switch port for use by guests only
The issue is that the physical port connected to the Hyper-V virtual Switch negotiates with the network switch at 100 Mbps full duplex while the management port negotiates at 1 Gbps full duplex. All clients (brand new HP Z210 workstations) also negotiate
with the switch at 1 Gbps.
During file copies and backups the network port connected to the Virtual Switch does not show any errors and transfers data at close to 100 Mbps. File transfers between individual workstations and workstations and server core again show no errors, but transfers
at 1 Gbps.
One observation is that the physical NIC connected to the Virtual Switch does not negotiate with the switch until the Hyper-V service has started (I’m guessing) the virtual switch.
Also, while staging the server the Hyper-V virtual switch created when the server was connected to a 100 Mbps switch not a 1Gbps switch as it is in production.
Has anyone encountered anything similar and if so how did you get the physical NIC to operate at full capabilities? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I purchased one gigabyte switch for home used several days ago, I just performed some copy tests between virtual machines and physical machines(not
Hyper-V host machine)in the same LAN, the average copy speed is 350Mb/s.
Best Regards,
Vincent Hu

I had a similar problem. I fixed it using a few steps. I think the important steps were performed on the Time Machine client although I also rebooted the Time Machine server once and cycled the Time Machine service on and off a few times. I also turned on and off the external drives connected to the Time Machine server.
Now to the steps that I think actually fixed the problem. They were performed on the Time Machine client.
    1) Under Time Machine in System Preferences, turn it off and remove the remote backup destination.
    2) Under Keychain Access in Utilities within Applications, look for entries under login and System related to your Time Machine server machine.
    3) From the client, I connected to the Time Machine server both through Finder and through Time Machine preferences under System Preferences. Instead of just entering the password, I changed the password a few times.
    4) I also deleted the Keychain entries between some of these password changes.
    5) Then I went back to Time Machine one last time and set up the remote volume on the Time Machine server and turned it on.

  • How to Change Hyper-V Host Physical NIC

I plan to replace a physical NIC on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v host. What are the steps that I need to do. Thank you.

Delete the virtual switch for it and remove the NIC.
Install the new NIC and create a new virtual switch for it and assign it to the VMs that need it.

Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and RRAS (for Internet over NAT)
VM: Windows Server 2012 R2 with installed Active Directory Domain Services
When I open AD DS configuration window (“promote this server to a domain controller”) many services and programs on my host (include Hyper-V, RRAS & Server Manager) fails with RPC Server unavailable error.

    Hello Aleksandr,
There wasn't any configuration information, ipconfig /all, network setup, etc. So it's difficult to tell.
More importantly, are you trying to promote the host server? If yes, that is not advised, for one, because it's a Hyper-V server, (not suggested at all), and two, RRAS is installed. RRAS is problematic with any domain controller because it turns it into
    a multihomed domain controller.

    Networking?
I don't know how your networking is setup, whether there are multiple NICs on the host server, if they are teamed, if you have the host interface set to allow the operating system to share administration, or if there are separate interfaces for each. Can
the host OS ping/communicate with the DC virtual machine?
If there are more than one NIC, you have the choice to team the NICs and share the Teamed NICs for the Hyper-V OS and the VMs, or keep them separate where one is devoted for the Hyper-V OS, and one for the VMs.

  • Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking and Hyper-V.

Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mOuoIWzmdE
Hi thanks for reading. Now I may well have my terminology incorrect here so I will try to explain  as best I can and apologies from the start.
    It’s a bit of both Hyper-v and Server 2012R2.
I am setting up a lab with Server 2012 R2. I have several physical network cards that I have teamed called “HostSwitchTeam” from those I have made several Virtual Network Adaptors such as below
    examples.
New-VMSwitch "MgmtSwitch" -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdaptername "HostSwitchTeam" -AllowManagement $false
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Vswitch" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"
When I install Hyper-V and it comes to adding a virtual switch during installation it only shows the individual physical network cards and the
HostSwitchTeam for selection.  When installed it shows the Microsoft Network Multiplexor Driver as the only option.
Is this correct or how does one use the Vswitch made above and incorporate into the Hyper-V so a weight can be put against it.
Still trying to get my head around Vswitches,VMNetworkadapters etc so somewhat confused as to the way forward at this time so I may have missed the plot altogether!
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi P.J.E,
    >>I have teams so a bit confused as to the adapter bindings and if the teams need to be added or just the vEthernet Nics?.
    Nic 1,2
    HostVMSwitchTeam
    Nic 3,4,5
             HostMgmtSwitchTeam
    >>The adapter Binding settings are:
    HostMgmtSwitchTeam
    V-Curric
    Nic 3
    Nic 4
    Nic 5
    V-Livemigration
    HostVMSwitch
    Nic 1
    Nic 2
    V-iSCSI
    V-HeartBeat
Based on my understanding of the description , "HostMgmtSwitchTeam and
HostVMSwitch " are teamed NIC .
You can think of them as two physical NICs (do not use NIC 1,2,3,4,5 any more , there are just two NICs "HostMgmtSwitchTeam and
    HostVMSwitch").
    V-Curric,
    V-Livemigration , V-iSCSI ,
V-HeartBeat are just VNICs of host  (you can change their name then check if the virtual switch name will be changed )

  • Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host Loses Network Connectivity

    Here's the scenario...
We have two 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts (VM1 and VM2) in a cluster that have 8 virtual machines that live on them. The servers are each utilizing three network connections that are teamed (Switch Independent, Address Hash).  They all go to the same switch.
Three nights ago at approximately 11:30 PM VM2 lost network connectivity. The server was up it was just inaccessible from the network. I could not ping in or out from it, no internet connection, yet the network connection icon did not show that it was
    disconnected.
Two nights ago we had no issues.
Last night, same thing happened at 11:30 PM. VM2 loses it network connection.
The only thing that seems to fix the issue is a reboot. Once the server comes back up everything is back to normal.
Anyone have any idea what is happening here? I do not see anything that sticks out in the logs that could point me in the right direction....

    Hi Sir,
Based on my experience , first you may need to keep the physical NIC driver up-to-date .
Also please check if there is "VMQ"/"virtual machine queue" property in advanced properties of physical NICs:
If yes please disable it for each team member then check the result .

  • Hyper-V Host (Win 8) to XP Virtual Machine File Transfer

Hello guys, first post here, and I've got a question about transferring files from the host computer to an xp hyper v virtual machine. I've researched and tried many methods but some are too complicated or in the case of the floppy it doesn't have enough
space. I need to transfer a 30mb 16-bit application from my host, Windows 8, to a windows XP virtual machine where I think I can run it. I seem to be "missing some network hardware" so I can't exactly access the internet, but is there still a way
to transfer an app within a host-to-vm network? I think I set up an external network, but don't really know how to use it.
    Thanks, and happy new year

    Hi Alec22,
    >>but is there still a way to transfer an app within a host-to-vm network? I think I set up an external network, but don't really know how to use it.
I would suggest you to use network share .
Please create an internal virtual switch and configure an IP  for it in host's "network connections " , then connect that VM to internal virtual switch
(that VM's IP should be in same subnet with that "internal virtual switch ")
Also you can refer to following article :

  • Routing of Network Traffic Between VLANs on a Hyper-V Virtual Switch

I am trying to discover how network traffic generated by reads and writes to RDVH User Profile Disks is routed through my network.  I have a pool of Hyper-V
desktop vm’s in their own VLAN (vlan1) with their own NIC bound to a Hyper-V Virtual Switch. On the same server I have another management NIC for the OS on a different VLAN (vlan2) and finally on another server I have a virtual machine which hosts the User
Profile Disks. The VM that hosts the User Profile Disks is on the same VLAN as the management NIC for the OS (vlan2).
When tracing the flow of network traffic to and from the User Profile Disk VM it all comes through the vlan2 NIC on the server where the virtual
desktop VMs reside and nothing comes through the vlan1 NIC on this server.  I would have expected the traffic to the virtual desktop VMs to come in  through the desktop VMs VLAN NIC (vlan1).
This leads me to two possibilities as to how the desktop vm’s on vlan1 get their  data to and from the User Pofile Disk vm on vlan2 without routing.
The desktop vm’s Hyper-V Virtual Switch automatically routes the User Profile Disk traffic from vlan1 to vlan2 internally using a virtual switch learning algorithm
Hyper-V itself handles all reads and writes to the User Profile Disks and since that is using the management NIC for the OS it is already on vlan2 and so the network traffic never leaves vlan2.
Any comments on the reason for traffic taking the path it does (as outlined above) as opposed to being layer-3 routed from VLAN1 to VLAN2?

Thanks for your reply Brian. I think your last paragraph above is what I have set up:
If you simply forward one VLAN to one physical NIC and the VMS on the corresponding External Virtual Switch simply end up on that VLAN without Hyper-V doing anything at all - but this dedicats one physical NIC per VLAN.
The Virtual Machines NIC that the vSwitch is patched to and the NIC for the OS are on different VLANS (both NICs are plugged into un-tagged ports on my switch).
The vNICs on the VM's are not tagged to a VLAN (The VLAN ID\ 'Enable virtual LAN identification' box is unticked)
My vSwitch is set up as connected to 'External Network' and isnt shared with the management network.
What I am trying to get at is how would network traffic on the VLAN my vm's are on get to the VLAN that the NIC for the OS is on without going through the router (even though a routable path is available)  ?
Is it possible the 'learning algorithm' referneced in a Technet article below is involved here (sorry I cant post links)?
For the virtual machine to communicate with the management operating system, there are two options. One option is to route the network packet through the physical network adapter and out to the physical network, which then returns the packet back to
the server running Hyper-V using the second physical network adapter. Another option is to route the network packet through the virtual network, which is more efficient. The option selected is determined by the virtual network. The virtual network includes
a learning algorithm, which determines the most efficient port to direct traffic to and will send the network packet to that port. Until that determination is made by the virtual network, network packets are sent out to all virtual ports.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    hi,
I have hyper v running on windows 8.1 pro laptop and have 2 virtual switches configured. the ethernet connection works great all the time.
The wireless has problems with wireless networks. half pics up my home network as i want and the other half picks up a wireless network in range which is not mine.
How do i fix this, as when this happens i cannot use the virtual machine to connect to the network or the internet

  • Set up reverse DNS for virtual mail hosting

I need a bit of server configuation advice.
I have a static IP and two public domains on a Snow Leopard server connected using NAT behind a firewall - with the necessary port forwarding to ensure all works.
    1. abc.com is my primary domain on the server - server.abc.com
    2. I have xyz.com set up as a virtual domain and also as a virtual mail host
This setup has worked well for a long time but I have found that emails to [email protected] are going missing.  If I check my mx records using one of the web based tools it show an error on the reverse dns for server.xyz.com showing a reverse DNS of server.abc.com.
So the question - is it possible to have secondary 'virtual' DNS record on the server so reverse DNS works for the virtual mail host xyz.com?  If not how do I handle the reverse DNS problem which i think is causing some external mail server to reject mail due to the inconsistency on the reverse DNS lookup?
    Many thanks for any suggestions

SMTP requires a DNS A record.
A DNS A record is also known as a machine record.
A DNS A record inherently means that forward DNS and reverse DNS will match.
The forward translation translates the host name to the IP address.
The reverse translation translates the IP address to host name.
When the full translation produces the same host name, that's an A record.
DNS CNAME records are aliases, and are used for virtual hosts.
CNAME records inherently do not match the reverse DNS translations.
To get your configuration to work, your server must have an A record.
That means forward and reverse DNS will match.
Any of the virtual hosts within your mail server then all use an MX pointing at the A record host.
If you have your DNS hosted somewhere other than your ISP, then you'll need your ISP to set up a DNS PTR.
The DNS PTR is the reverse translation; address to name.
If you have your own DNS services within your network (as would be typical with a privately-addressed NAT'd network), set that up as a virtual host within SMTP.
Here is some related reading on external (public) DNS, as related to SMTP servers and such.

  • 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster two node design with abundance 1Gbps NICs and FC storage

    Hello All,
First post so please be gentle!
We are currently in the process of building/testing the upgrade of two node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.
Two hosts built with Datacentre 2012 R2 which will host approx. 30 VM's.
Shared storage will be fault tolerant FC- connection.
    10, (yes 10!) 1Gbps NICs are available, Intel i350.
trying to decide on teaming interfaces using native LBFO and the 2008 'style' of using un-converged networking, or teaming up most interfaces and using QoS.  Can find many/numerous examples of using 10Gbps NICs and converged, however 10Gbps networking
    isn't an option right now.
    recommendations appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi Sir,
    >>trying to decide on teaming interfaces using native LBFO and the 2008 'style' of using un-converged networking, or teaming up most interfaces and using QoS.
The following link detailed the teaming configuration and it's applicable scenario (server 2012):

Also please refer to the document for 2012R2 LBFO :

In server 2012R2 , there is a new setting "Dynamic" for "load banacing mode " and it is recommended to use Dynamic for "Load banacing mode" :
If you can accept 1GB max bandwidth for each VM I would suggest you to use LBFO mode : Independent/dynamic/None(All adapter active)  .
