Hyper V hosts with Cluster Shared Volume do not provide Shared VHDX ability

Hi there, i've configured a pair of Hyper V hosts (UCS B230 M2) with SAN-Boot and access to a Shared Fiber Channel LUN.
No matter what I try, when I add a SCSI Adapter and one VHDX virtual disk to a VM, the option for "Advanced" never shows up therefore I can not share the VHDX file between another VM, which prevents any VM based clustering from working (IE: Clustered
SQL server)
Here are the settings I have configured:
The LUN has been formatted with NTFS
The Hyper V hosts have been configured as a Windows Cluster with an IP address and the Fiber Channel LUN configured as a Cluster Shared Volume
I follows the guides below
Create a CSV
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx
Create a shared VHDX
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn282283.aspx
Further details:
Two HyperV server core hosts built
Both joined to AD
Both joined to a Windows failover cluster
One 2TB Fibre Channel LUN presented from an EMC VNX array to both hosts
LUN formatted as NTFS
LUN created as a Cluster Shared Volume
Cluster Shared Volume present on both HyperV hosts
VM created within the Cluster Shared Volume
VM Booted up and Windows 2012 has been installed
VM gracefully shut down
Through the HyperV Manager, going in to VM settings, create a SCSI adapter, create a new VHDX file inside the CSV, the “Advanced” option for the VHDX is not present, therefore the option to make the VHDX file shared is not available
I have followed all steps in the Microsft Technet pages to create a CSV and a VM with Shared VHDX
I’ve cleared all settings and restarted multiple times, but this option is not present

Hi Sir,
>>No matter what I try, when I add a SCSI Adapter and one VHDX virtual disk to a VM, the option for "Advanced" never shows up therefore I can not share the VHDX file between another VM
>>Yes we are using Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
As we know Hyper-v server 2012R2 is a free version without GUI , I'm afraid you are not using Win 8.1 or other windows server 2012R2 to manage that free version hyper-v server .
Shared vhdx is a new feature came with 2012R2 , if use previous windows to manage 2012R2 you will not see "advanced" option (The blue circle belongs 2012 , the red circle belongs to 2012R2 ):

  • Explain me about the Host,Node,Cluster,Binary volume in HANA terminalogy ?

    Hi Team ,
I am just refering through some documents related to SAP HANA Architecture and Landscape and came through the above mentioned jargon , will u please clearly explain me about these and how they are related .
    Thanks
    Dinu Pendyala

    Hello Dinesh,
In SAP HANA Architecture there is no mention of any host, node, cluster, binary volume.
These all are the common term, which is used in computer world.
The same meaning is applicable everywhere.

  • 2012 R2 Hyper-V HOST with virtualized 2008 R2 SP1 RDSH - Remote FX Capable?

This article goes over RemoteFX and RDSH for 2008 R2 SP1, but nothing is discussed in regards to 2012 R2 Hyper-V HOSTs for the virtualized RDSH server.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2011/03/25/q-amp-a-microsoft-remotefx-and-remote-desktop-session-host-servers.aspx
My goal is to use a 2012 R2 Hyper-V HOST server to provide RemoteFX vGPU performance to a 2008 R2 SP1 RDSH server. Is this possible? If not, are there any solutions that can provide graphics performance benefits to an RDSH server? If so, are there limitations?
    What are the benefits?

    Hi,
A Server 2008 R2 VM does not support vGPU (neither does 2012/2012 R2).  One possibility if the apps you want to improve are DirectX-based is to run RDSH on a physical server, with a GPU installed,
and enable the Use hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions group policy setting.
Please thoroughly test with the intended applications, GPU, and expected concurrent number of sessions to see if this configuration benefits you.  It only potentially benefits DirectX applications, and only applies to full desktop connections,
    not RemoteApps.
Additionally you may want to test Windows Server Technical Preview/Windows Technical Preview since it has enhanced vGPU capabilities for the VMs.  vGPU is supported for a single-user Windows Server RDSH VM.  Please see the document below (and
    its comments) for more information:

  • Changing Hyper-V host and cluster virtual IP addresses to new subnet/VLAN

I have a 2 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster, managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2, and I would like to change the IP addresses of the hosts and the cluster, in order to move them to a new subnet and VLAN. The existing and new subnets
are able to route to each other so all hosts will still be able to communicate throughout the parts of the process where they may be on separate subnets. There is also a dedicated cluster heartbeat network on its own subnet and VLAN that I am not altering
    in any way.
The 2 hosts are configured with 4 nics in a team, with dedicated virtual interfaces for each of the following:
    -Live Migration
    -Cluster Heartbeating
-Host management/general traffic (the cluster virtual IP address is also on the same subnet as these interfaces).
It is the host management/general traffic addresses that I want to change. The interfaces were created and configured with the Add-VMNetworkAdapter, New-NetIPAddres and Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan commands.
Please advise if the following process is correct:
    1) Evacuate all the VMs from the first host to be changed and put it in maintenance mode.
    2) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapter to change the name of the interface (the current name refers to the VLAN it's on)
    3) Use Set-NetIPAddress to change the IP address and gateway of the interface as appropriate
    4) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan to set the VLAN ID
    5) Take the host out of maintenance mode and move all VMs off the other host
    6) Repeat above steps on the other host
I know that I will then need to change the cluster virtual IP address, but I have no idea how to do this or where to look for that setting. Please advise!
    Cheers.

  • VM using cluster shared volume will not run if the CSV is owned by a different node.

If a VM is owned by node "A" and the VHD file is on a CSV that is owned by node "B", it will fail to start. Hyper-v manager popup says that the VHD file is not accessible.  If you change the owner of the CSV file to
node "A", it works.  This would imply that the node cannot access the files on the CSV it does not own.  However, the you can logon to the nodes and all have access to the csv.
This is a Server 2008 R2 cluster.  I would appreciate any help in solving this.

    Hi Dana,
No you don't need to destroy the cluster.
If you run cluster validation from fail over cluster manager it will allow you to run all checks. It will mention that you have resources that are using some of the CSV but then give you the option to take those cluster resources offline during the test
to check all storage. Or to leave those CSV out of the test depending on which you choose. All other test should be possible with the cluster up and it will NOT need to be destroyed to run them.
    Open validation wizard
    Select "Run all test (recommended)
On the next window check all storage and then run the checks.
NOTE: This will take all resources offline so if checking CSV with VMs on it would be probably best to shut them down first.

  • All Shared Volumes Do Not Mount

I have setup personal sharing across a wireless network and three Mac laptops. They all connect, but all the volumes from one Powerbook (a Smartdisk 250Gb Crossfire drive used to store music and photos) do not mount. The other Smartdisk Firelite shows up across the network. Problems printing, but that's probably a different question.

I don't mean the login Guest account. When you log into a remote computer, if you do not click, "Connect as" and login with a regular account you default to a guest-like account.
If that is the case, click "disconnect" in Finder and then "Connect as" You should get a popup login window for the other computer. Otherwise you have limited privileges on the remote machine.

  • Apple Earbuds with remote mic/volume functions not working in Windows

So this is somewhat of a strange one. My new Macbook Pro early 2011 with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro with all latest updates (including the recent firmware and bootcamp releases) doesn't seem to see my Apple Earbuds with remote as a microphone and the volume commands from the earbuds do nothing. • 3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

    Hi,
We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed
(Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.
Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI
Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.
Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

I thought I was tying to do just that with 8x600 GB RAID-10 using the H/W RAID controller (on the 3rd Server) and creating CSVs out of that space so as to provide better storage performance for the HA-VMs.
    1. Storage Server : 8x 600GB RAID-10 (For CSVs to house all HA-VMs running on the other 2 Servers) It may also run some local VMs that have very little disk I/O
    2. Hyper-V-1 : Will act has primary HYPER-V hopst for 2x Exchange and Database Server HA-VMs (the VMDXs would be stored on the Storage Servers CSVs on top of the 8x600GB RAID-10). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
    3. Hyper-V-2 : Will act as a Hyper-V host when the above HA-VMs fail-over to this one (when HYPER-V-1 is down for any reason). May also run some non-HA VMs using the local 2x600 GB in RAID-1
The single point of failure for the HA-VMs (non HA-VMs are non-HA so its OK if they are down for some time) is the Storage Server. The Exchange servers here are DAG peers to the Exchange Servers at the head office so in case the storage server mainboard
goes down (disk failure is mitigated using RAID, other components such as RAM, mainboard may still go but their % failure is relatively low) the local exchange servers would be down but exchange clients will still be able to do their email related tasks using
    the HO Exchange servers.
Also they are under 4hr mission critical support including entire server replacement within the 4 hour period.
If you're OK with your shared storage being a single point of failure then sure you can proceed the way you've listed. However you'll still route all VM-related I/O over Ethernet which is obviously slower then running VMs from DAS (with or without virtual SAN
LUN-to-LUN replication layer) as DAS has higher bandwidth and smaller latency. Also with your scenario you exclude one host from your hypervisor cluster so running VMs on a pair of hosts instead of three would give you much worse performance and resilience:
with 1 from 3 physical hosts lost cluster would be still operable and with 1 from 2 lost all VMs booted on a single node could give you inadequate performance. So make sure your hosts would be insanely underprovisioned as every single node should be able to
handle ALL workload in case of disaster. Good luck and happy clustering :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • VMM 2012 R2: error 410 / 0x80070001 when adding a new Hyper-V host. VMM Agent won't install automatically (status 1603)

I have several Windows Server 2012 R2 hosts. The OS is freshly installed, no roles/3d party software besides Hyper-V role). I also have a freshly installed VMM 2012 R2 server. They all are in the same AD domain. I want to manage those Hyper-V hosts
with this VMM instance, but I have troubles connecting those hosts to VMM.
Whenever I try to add a Hyper-V host in the VMM console, the process is stopped almost immediately after it starts. The failing step is "1.2 Install Virtual Machine Manager Agent". The final error message is as follows:
    Error (410)
    Agent installation failed on XXX.
    Incorrect function (0x80070001)
    Recommended Action
Try the operation again. If the problem persists, install the agent locally and then add the managed computer.
If I try to install the agent manually copied from the VMM host (C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\Virtual Machine Manager\agents\amd64\3.2.7634.0
as of now) by just clicking on its MSI file in Windows Explorer (and agreeing to the Windows prompt to run it with elevated privileges), the installation fails as well with "Installation success or error status: 1603." in the
    server Application log.
The only way I found to install the agent is to run the installation from command prompt with elevated privileges. In this case the installation finishes successfully, and I can add the host to VMM by marking the "Reassociate the host" checkbox
    in the VMM wizard.
Why is it so? Isn't the agent supposed to install without manual intervention? As I recall, I had no such problem with previous versions of Windows Server and VMM.

I brought up the share because it is off by default with Hyper-V Server as well as a Core installation.  Regardless of the Firewall policy involved.
Maybe, but I don't work with pure Hyper-V and Core servers. I have a full-fledged Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.
You're correct that File Server role is not enabled by default, this is my mistake. I open SMB-IN port manually (with the help of a group policy), and Windows considers it to be am equivalent of the enabled File Server role. Nonetheless, ADMIN$ share is
always accessible in my environment (and without it, for example, I wouldn't be able to remotely install things like SCOM Agent which installs without a glitch). Just in case I manually installed the File Server role, and it didn't help.
What you say about multihomed servers is interesting. The servers in question do have multiple network interfaces, but at the time I tried to install the VMM Agent only one of them (a designated host management / network access interface) had a real IP address.
Two other interfaces were non-configured (I apply a virtual switch configuration after the VMM Agent is installed). Just in case I disabled them when tried to install the VMM Agent remotely on the last host, and the installation still failed immediately
after start. Anyways, after the VMM Agent is installed manually the host can be normally re-associated with VMM, so it's doubtful that I have a network issue.
And, of course, there is no 3d-party software on the hosts (no antiviruses/firewalls in particular) except the EMC Unisphere Host Agent (a piece of software necessary for connecting a host to an EMC storage system) and networking drivers. Actually,
this is a pure Microsoft environment.
So I still believe that is has something to do with the Windows Installer inability to configure Windows Firewall policy after being invoked from Windows Explorer with a double-click on a MSI file. But I don't know how to strictly confirm it.

  • Command for silent installation of SCVMM Agent or adding Hyper-v Host to SCVMM

I have to add my Hyper-V host using command to SCVMM without access to SCVMM Console.
Plz provide me commands for that.

    Hi Richa,
I tested in my lab to add a domain joined hyper-v host with following command:
    Add-SCVMHost -ComputerName serverlab-01 -VMMServer scvmm2012r2-01 -Credential (Get-SCRunAsAccount -Name "domainadmin" )
The Runasaccount "domainadmin" is create via command "new-scrunasaccount" (during this command it will prompt to input the username and password in my case I added a domain admin account ):
    $credential = Get-Credential
    New-SCRunAsAccount -Credential $credential -Name "domainadmin"
Actually (in most cases), you can use "view script" in the GUI or at the end of the wizard , this may help us to know which command was used :

  • Color Lables on Shared Volumes

    Hi Everyone,
I have just found out that when a user changes the label color for a folder on a shared volume the changes are not reflected real-time. That's to say If I change the colour of a folder called Templates to "Red" another user on another mac who also sees the shared volume will not see the label color change made to the Templates folder. He/She will need to disconnect the shared volume and reconnect in order to see the change. Has anyone out there seen this problem? It's not 100% essential but would be good if there was a solution of some sort.
Just to add did not have this problem on my old mac server which was running 10.2.x our new server is running 10.4.8.
    Thanks,
    Kwong.

Hi Russell, Sorry been away for a few days. The InDesign documents are already on a shared volume and it wouldn't be feasible to save anywhere else as there is a particular hierarchy on the server as to where files are stored, so that all documents are within their relevant job folders, with images, image bank images & graphics etc stored on other shares. However all acl's are the same for all users, so this shouldn't be an issue. I still can't work out whether this is an Apple OS or an Adobe problem.

  • What is recommended size of System drive to keep operating system files , paging files and Memory Dump of hyper-v host.

    Hi ,
    I want to setup hyper-v host with 128 GB RAM  , Windows 2012 R2
What is recommended size of System drive  to keep operating system files  , paging files  and Memory Dump?
I tested to using 150 GB  , but when the server is crashed, there is no free space to keep memory dump file.
    Ramy

    Hi Ramy,
For Server 2012R2 the absolute minimum system drive is 32Gb but this assume you have limited RAM or have your Page file located on another drive. It used to be best practice to setup a small page file but MS PFE now suggest leaving windows to manage
    the page file size.
Obviously this is not always possible depending on the amount of RAM in the system, but base the system drive around this or offload the Page file to perhaps another drive. On top of this you also need space for the memory dump to be written, potentially
again up to the size of the RAM. Assuming you fire the machine back up after a crash, you need space for the OS, the Page File plus space for the associated dump file.
There is a nice little article here that maybe of assistance:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13383.best-practices-for-page-file-and-minimum-drive-size-for-os-partition-on-windows-servers.aspx

  • Authorization manager (azman) for hyper-v control with replication

I am using a pair of server 2012 machines for hyper-v hosts with replication enabled and I need to use azman to set up users who are authorized to manage (start/stop/restart) selected VMs only.  The instructions I have seen use the hyper-v XML data
store.  I have not seen a way to replicate the data store between the 2 hyper-v hosts.  Assuming that I set up duplicate authorizations on the 2 machines, do I need to set the VM scope on both servers or just the primary server of the replication
pair.  I do not have a pair of servers to test with so I will be using test VMs on the production hosts.
The process seems straightforward until replication is added.

    1) Azman is supposed to work in Server 2012.  I have not seen any other way to implement the user-level control of selected VMs using the Server 2012 OS.  I am trying to avoid the additional cost of SCVMM to accomplish what is supported by the
OS in server 2008 and 2012.
    2) I don't understand the intersection between VM replication and user control on the hosts, hence the question.  If replication, once set up, only replicates changes on the VHD then I probably need to set up duplicate scopes and authorities on the
two replication partner hosts.  If replication is smart enough to replication the scope information then the scopes need to be defined only on the primary server.  This part of the question seems to have been answered in an earlier response - the
scopes (and I assume the Azman authorizations) need to be set up on both servers.  If this is the case then my only problem is accomplishing what can be done in server 2008 and 2012 un server 2012R2 without using azman or SCVMM.
