Hyper-V kernel modules prevent Xen-kernel from finding disk drives

Hi,
I tried booting Xen-kernel 4.3 in a Hyper-V virtual machine. The vm runs Debian7, which uses hv modules for Hyper-V. When I boot the normal kernel, it is fine, but booting Debian's xen-kernel doesn't work, because no virtual disk drives
can be found. This looks like an issue with the hv modules, because without them, the xen-kernel boots fine. I tested this by using an older Debian6, where hv modules are not loaded by default.
Regards,
Sladi

the PV kernel "kernel-xen" is specific to the xen hypervisor.
This kernel will not boot on any other hypervisor.
Where the xen VM container in this case is a PV VM.  Hyper-V only creates HVM type VM containers (To use xen language).
So yes, the pae or 'regular' kernel will wirk in a Hyper-V vm, the PV kernel ('kernel-xen') will not.
It has nothing to do with the hv components - it is the kernel itself and the differences in how they work and their expectations.
Also, only the HVM type VM is transportable across hypervisor platforms.  The xen PV type VM is not, it will only run on xen.

Open Terminal and type or paste:  drutil eject and press enter, quit.
Might just be a bad DVD or it could contain a different form of copy protection that the Mac doesn't understand yet. Use a older DVD's and try them out, if you still have the same problem then you can try as much as you can of the fix list here or take your machine in for service.

Have you tried the hard drive on a different computer? I would do it first. Then you can dismantle the exclosure and try to connect it somehow else..

  • Qosmio X500/00X System Recovery (Factory Reset) From Hard Disk Drive or Separate Disk

    Hey Guys,
Looking for your advice and any links if any...cheers in advance
    My Situation
    In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J
At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.
It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
    My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slow
I need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
    The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached
I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba
    My Questions
Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?
Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)
Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?
Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 from so I can make a recover disk??
    Notes
Tried to email Toshiba support but at step 1 of their email process validation failed due to my PC being out of warranty so will call them on Monday instead
THANK YOU THANK YOU, for any help you can give big ro small
    Cheers
    Rick

WOW, thanks Macius for that great, full and thorough reply...cheers mate
I suspected I didn't have a recovery partition - so thanks for confirming it as I planned to risk it and try! I guess it doesn't really matter why, and it would be futile to go and blame the re-seller or Toshiba at this late stage in the game in hopes they would help...
Yeah, I just went to Microsoft Software Recovery hoping to download Win 7 OS and create a recovery disk but of course Microsoft would NOT allow it due to it being software that was pre-installed on the device blah blah blah (see error image)
And I didn't bother back then in 2009 to create recovery media as you wisely descibed, mostly due to laziness and mentally putting it in the 'too hard basket'...I didn't really understand it - or much about computers at the time.
Re - your Option #2 - thanks for confirming Toshiba drivers. I could/can do this - but don't really want to buy something I already have, perhaps I'll check out ebay or see if a friend has a disk
Re - your Option #1 - I'm currently based in Vietnam and wont be back in Oz till late in the year, so will see if I can find a reliable Toshiba service provider here - but wont hold me breath on this one
I'm thinking that IF Option #1 is a No-Go then - maybe Plan B or Option #3 could be:
Do an Audit of Programs to identify those I don't need and can safely remove - then remove using Control Panel/ Remove Programs tool
Reformat all other drives (not C:// where OS is)
    Then use some re-partition software e.g. Disk-Partiton.com
    Any final thoughts???
Anyhow - thanks very much again

  • Intel Xserve will NOT boot from hard disk drive

I have two Intel Xserves 2.0 QC machines
I have tried to re-install version 10.4.11 OS (don't ask) onto a Hard disk drive that is in a Disk drive caddy and inserted in the machine.
When booting from The installation DVD media
The disk is seen by the "Disk Utility" (the disk is partitioned as GUID boot) and the installation proceeds to the disk.
Once the first pass of the installation is complete and the system reboots, the system shows the folder and ? mark.
If I boot and hold "ALT" key to view all avaialble boot options the Hard Disk Drive does NOT appear as valid boot disk.
It does show, the still inserted Installation DVD.
I CAN boot from an external firewire drive and the Hard disk drive is visible to the OS once logged in.
I have tried different caddy postions (left, middle and right)
I have tried bona fide Apple supplied Disk drives
I have tried various different caddies
I have tried installing Operating System 10.5.*  and  10.6.8 server
I have run SMC reset and system reset
But still I cannot boot off from any Hard Disk Drive inserted in a caddy at the front of the system.
    Has anyone seen this behaviour?
    Is it fixable?
Do I have replace something like the Hard Disk Drive back plane circuit board? Or even the main logic board?
I have now run out of ideas and cannot find any help in discussions or just googling.
ANY help would be very appreciated
    Regards
    Tony

    Antonio Hi !
QC = Quad core  or  QX as it is written on the "pull out" serial number tab at rear of system
    I have 3 late 2006 Intel xserves
On my intial posting I declared 2 were 2.0 machines - when I was trying to be concise
2 of the macines are 2.66 systems and 1 is 2.0 system - all are QX machines
the 2.0 and 1 of the 2.66 will NOT boot from the ADM and disk inside the system - whereas the other 2.66 system will.
I have many different Caddies and these have different product/model number labels
    603-9965
    603-9545
    603-9796
    these are marked "intel SATA"
The 80Gb was only one of the drives tested - I have used Seagate 400Gb 750Gb and 1Tb  -  all of which have been used in systems at one time or another
and as I said the drives ARE visible once the operating system (either installation DVD or external firewire are booted from) - they are just NOT visible when the system is searching for boot media.
Thanks for the guide - I will look through that and continue to try and find an answer

  • Getting Windows 7 to Boot from Second Disk Drive

Recently I purchased a solid state drive for my HP desktop.  The desktop is running 64 bit Windows 7 Premium (HP upgrade from Vista).
My goal is to have the operating system boot from the new SSD and not from the original hard drive.  I have done the following:
    1.  Installed SSD and plugged it into SATA slot 1 on motherboard.  The original drive remains in SATA slot 0.
    2.  Formatted SSD and assigned new drive letter "K" (next available) in Windows 7.
    3.  Using Acronis, I "recovered" a previous backup of the operating system onto the SSD including boot sector.
    3.  In BIOS, selected boot order for SSD to be ahead of original drive.
However, when starting Windows, the operating system is clearly running from the original drive, not the SSD.
    Questions:
    1.  In older operating systems, it mattered what SATA slot the "boot" drive was plugged into.  Should I have plugged the SSD into slot 0 on the motherboard instead of slot 1?  Does it matter with this PC and Windows 7?
    2.  Does the Windows 7 operating make calls to drive C without regard to where it boots from?  If yes, how do I rename the SSD to "C"?  (I'm thinking I should unplug the original drive from the motherboard altogether then try a rename).
    3.  Are there other issues I have not recognized?  Loading the OS from an SSD sounded so simple before I started!
All advice will be gratefully appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi, you will need to either change the drives bootup order in the BIOS or select it from the bootup menu at startup (press F9 I think). See this topic Re: HP Pavilion Elite e9180t Storage Upgrade in Desktop Hardware for more details. Good luck.

  • Booting from new disk drive

After copying all of my old drive onto a newer one I want to have all the computers that previously used the old drive boot into the new one. I can see the drive on my main server desktop but cannot boot from it. Any suggestions or readings you can suggest?

    Several questions.
What application did you use to copy the files? SuperDuper! (full disk cloning is free; a very good app by the way). Carbon Copy Cloner? Both of these apps will clone a disk and make it bootable.
Were you able to boot from this disk before?
Is this disk an external firewire or USB? As far as I know all Mac with a firewire port can boot from a firewire bootable disk. I think only more recent Macs can boot from a USB disk.
You mentioned server. Are you by any chance trying to do a NetBoot? After all this is the *Networking and Web* forum. If so then the Mac OS X Server forum might be a better place to ask about NetBooting.

  • How to PREVENT Time Machine from switching disks

I have two USB drives. I use one for iTunes and the second for Time Machine backups. Problem is, when I plug in the iTunes disk, if the Time Machine disk is not connected then Time Machine switches to this disk and initiates a backup. I have specified in Preferences that the other disk is for TM; also tried 'locking' the preferences screen. But, still TM continues to start backups onto this iTunes disk when I plug it in (assuming, as above, that its regular disk is unavailable).
How can I prevent TM from doing this; and force it to wait until its own drive is available? Have checked forums and found no answer. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Yup, you're the 3rd or 4th to report it with various models of WDs (one fellow had 3 of them!), and a few weeks ago someone had some Iomegas, I think, too.
This confusion may well also explain some weird stats in Get Info I noticed last week (such as the drive apparently having used more bytes than its capacity, as I recall).
    Quite likely.
Thank you for your support. I shall come back and mark the thread resolved when I have reformatted the drive.
Cool. Also double-check the contents of the one you don't erase; you may find some extra stuff there.

  • How do you prevent a VI from finding a sub-VI in it's old location?

We store our project on a file server P. I set the search path to
    C:\local
    P:\common
so the project VIs will find a local copy if I'm working on it or the global copy if I'm not. However, they always look to where the sub-VI was last found, regardless of the search path (it does NOT include or ). Is there any way of turning off this behavior?

    Hi DoctorZ,
    in a VI is
    a) the relative path if on the same drive,
    b) the absolut path if on another drive,
    c) the name only if the subVI is in vi.lib, user.lib or instr.lib
to all subVIs stored. So if your search path does not include and the subVI will always be found. The search path is only used when to load a VI that has moved from its original path or is a top level VI.
I have no place found to turn off this behavior.
I find this behavior is good. So we need not to maintain a list of search paths for each project since not all projects have the same directory layout. A lot of us work on more than one project within two weeks and we use often a lot of subdirs.
Also we maintain the project in a project directory. Each dev
eloper makes a local copy of the project. All paths are now correct and the developer can do his work. If he finished he closes LV, copies the VIs back to the project directory and can now open the project again from the project directory. And all the paths are correct again.
It is neccessary to close LV, so it forgets all the paths which are collected from the time when it was started.

  • Satellite A100 - data recovery from Hard Disk Drive

    Hi,
I have recently tried to help a friend with recovering data of his Toshiba Satelitte A100 that screen has died.
I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer,
This does not seem to work.
I can put the hard drive back into the computer and i can hear the computer boot up and was able to see it with a LCD Screen. I have been able to remove the data this way so we are safe.
My question is why can we seem to remove the drive and see it on another computer?
I assume there must be some interface or format that the laptop may use for the recovery section and so cant be seen as a normal drive.
If I couldnt remove the data because say the motherboard died. Is there any way to be able to see the data on another computer.
    Email: [[email protected]]

    >I thought this would be a simply task of removing the hard drive and putting it a HDD caddie and attaching it to another computer
I have done this several times and it works perfectly.
I had full access to all saved data on all partitions.
Similar in on notebook with two HDDs.
I have Satellite A300 with two HDDs inside. On one HDD Ive installed WXP and on another Win7.
Each OS can see saved data on other HDD.
Maybe is there some problem with HDD or with HDD caddie.
Have you tried to connect this HDD to other notebooks to see if the problem is the same?

    Hello markshepherd1,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
According to the following article, when you're going through the process of burning a playlist to a disc, you have the option to select "Include CD Text".
If you’re creating an audio CD, choose your options:
    Change the recording speed:
Choose an option from the Preferred Speed pop-up menu.
When you burn an audio CD, iTunes automatically uses the best recording speed for the CD. However, if your blank CD is rated for a slower speed than the maximum speed of your drive, or if you experience problems creating CDs, you may want to change the recording speed to match the CD’s rating.
Change the amount of silence between songs:
Choose an option from the Gap Between Songs pop-up menu.
Have all the songs on the disc play at the same volume:
    Select Use Sound Check.
Include information that disc players in some vehicles can display:
    Select Include CD Text.

  • "Moving a project from network L: drive to C: drive - how do I relink the files?

    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F.html
In the above thread "Moving a project to another computer" it states the assets should retain their file names and folder locations so that Premiere Pro can find them and relink them to their clips in the project automatically and although I'm only a novice PP user that is standard advice for any software.  However I can't find advice anywhere on how to swap a project from one disk drive to another on the same computer.
What I want to do is move the project media files off my network (L:) drive to the C: drive of the editing computer as all the advice on here about disk drives is not to use network drives.  I've copied the files over but how do I replace the media file links within the PP project which are currently pointing to the sub-folders on my L:drive with replacement one's pointing to the same folder names but with the path as C: drive.  Sorry if it is a numpties question but I'm not finding the answer via search.
Reason for shifting project - for some reason the sequence files were being lost when I reopened the project so I had to reuse the last good auto-save despite loss of some editing work and the project had also suddenly started taking up to an hour to load all the linked media.  Given the advice about not using network drives decided to eliminate one of the possible causes before going any further with risk of losing the edited file..

I strongly agree with Jim on where to relocate the Project and media files.
Now, when you do Move the files, the Paths (absolute) in the PRPROJ file(s), will no longer be correct. The drive letter will have changed.
When you Open your Project from its new location, you will get a question dialog, "Where is file _____ ?" for the first Asset, where the link is now broken. Using the Finder, navigate to the folder, where that first missing Asset is NOW located, and select that. PrPro will then look in that folder, and will automatically relink to all Assets in that folder. If you have your Assets in multiple folders, you will need to repeat, for each folder, and again, PrPro will relink to all Assets in THAT folder. Depending on the folder/sub-folder hierarchy, you will have to repeat for all folders.
When all Assets have been relinked, I would immediately do a Save_As, incrementing the Project's name, so as to NOT overwrite that original Project file - just in case you ever need to revisit that.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
