Hyper-V on Windows Server Core
Hi, Im new to the Windows Server 2012 Core edition. But I have found out that I can install Hyper-v on a Windows Server Core edition.
I guess its possible to run Core edition with Hyper-V installed on a laptop. But can I run the VM´s with GUI directly on the Core edition or do I need another computer to manage the VM´s with GUI installed on the hyper-v host?
It's recommended to remove the GUI from your Windows 2012 R2 server that you intend to use as a Hyper-V host. It should have the Hyper-V and related roles only such as iSCSI initiator and MPIO. Management should be done from a Windows 8.1 VM with RSAT
tools installed. This can be a VM on the same Hyper-V host or another one, or a physical machine. The Hyper-V hosts and Windows 8.1 machine should belong to the same Windows domain.
The GUI can be added and removed as any other role on Windows 2012 R2 server.
See this post for more details.

Perfmon breaking when CF9 is install on Windows Server Core 2008 R2
Hi,
Before I install Coldfusion on my Windows Server 2008 R2 Core I can connect into Performance Monitoring remotely and view all the performance counters. After installing CF9 I can connect into the perfmon remotely but when I list the performance object/counters the list is there but completely blank - as in I can scroll through a list that has no text in it.
If I try to pull perfmon information via WMI all the win32_PerfRawData and win32_PerfFormattedData classes are missing - including those not relating to IIS.
Is it a case that CF9 is not supported on Server Core? Anyone know any fixes for this? I have tried both Server Install and Multiserver install but my perfmon counts are broken by CF9 each time.
Everything else works and I can get my sites up and running just fine - it is just the performance counters that are being affected here and as they are important it means that I cannot use CF9 on Core edition as a result.
Thanks for any help/advice.Hi

Cannot install GUI to Hyper-V 2012 R2 server core
Hi everyone,
I have followed this article to convert a server core install to have a GUI installed:
http://andersonpatricio.ca/enabling-and-disabling-the-graphical-interface-in-hyper-v-server-core/
When I run the powershell command:
Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra -Source C:\Sources\Windows\Winsxs
I get the following error:
PS C:\> Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra -Source C:\Sources\Windows\

I have checked if there is a folder called Winsxs under c:\sources\windows and it is not there. Looks like the install.win file does not have it.
There is no bloody way of installing a GUI onto HypervCore.
If anyone has had any success with this, I would like to hear from you.
Many Thanks

There is a lot of confusion between Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v Core and just the Hyper-V R2 hypercore free edition.
Those commands are going to work for the first option. The free version cannot have a GUI.
The only way I can fix this by removing this hypervisor and and installing Windows 2012 r2 with hyperv role, restore the configs and the VMs.
Thanks for all your help.

Hyper-v 2012 R2 server core recommendations for single server setup
Hi All,
Next weekend I will be installing a brand new Dell 720 server for a client of mine.
I would like to hear some recommendations on how to install this hypervisor.
Let me state that I have had some experience with virtualization technology in the past with VMWARE ESXi.
This is a small client with under 10 users but I have learned that with the 2012 product offering you cannot get Small Business Server any more. I know Microsoft has Windows server 2012 Essentials but you would have to have Exchange server in the cloud which
my client does not want. He wants to run his Exchange server in house.
Also he needs Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Server) because his accounting application requires it.
He has an existing Windows 2003 domain controller that eventually has to be decommissioned because it is too old and slow.
So I thought I install Hyper-v 2012 R2 core on the new server and then create 2 VMs:
1) Windows 2012 STD to run as a secondary domain controller.
2) Windows 2012 STD member server with Exchange server 2013 and Remote Desktop Services role.
My questions here are these:
1) Do I install the Hypervisor in workgroup or domain mode?
2) When I am finished with the old server do I transfer the AD FSMO roles onto the VM that is acting as a domain controller?
The new server has 2 CPUs. How does Microsoft licensing go here? I know that Windows 2012 STD gives me 2 instances with the same product key on the same server for 1 CPU. What happens if you have 2?
Can someone give me some insight on how to go about this? I remember that I found this easier with VMWARE Esxi.
Now with Hyper-V I need to also get a management workstation with Windows 8 professional on it to manage the Hyper-V core server.
Thanks and regards
AlfredIn regard to the VM's:
1.) DC: If you're going to be installing a second domain controller that is 2012 R2, you might consider reading this guide first.
http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2012/07/30/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012.aspx
2.) Exchange: Here's the guide for installing Exchange 2013 on Server 2012. I don't believe R2 is supported yet for 2013.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/14506.how-to-install-exchange-2013-on-windows-server-2012.aspx
3.) Host: You'd install the host in domain mode....but that point may be moot after you read #5.
4.) FSMO: I would verify the health of the 2012 DC before moving the roles. All too often I'll see a new DC get stood up, sysvol won't be published, the engineer will be in a rush to move the FSMO's, and things get a little sideways. Ultimately
you don't HAVE to move the FSMO's until you are ready to decommission the 2003 box.
5.) Licensing: No licensing rights convey with Hyper-V Core, so this may not be best for your scenario. See the queen mother of all Hyper-V licensing posts here -
http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=13090
For what it's worth, plenty of SMB's are going to Office 365 to avoid the on-prem administration headache, but your client wants what your client wants. Sorry if this isn't the news you wanted but I hope it helps. -
SharePoint 2013 RTM and WIndows Server Core 2012
Hi,
I've got a simple question I couldn't find the answer on the net.
Is SharePoint 2013 officially supported (supported, not just working almost fine) by Microsoft if installed on a Windows 2012 Server Core? Does it depend on the roles of the farm?
If possible I would like to have official sources from Microsoft.
Thanks for helping :)
CyaFirst, I guess I should start with a disclaimer. I do work for Microsoft, but I do not speak for the product group and have no authority over what is/is not/will/will be supported with regards to SharePoint 2013.
My assumption however is that we'll treat it the same way we did for SharePoint 2010. It should work just fine and should be supported. The software requirements that Jason points out indicate that SharePoint requires Windows Server
2012 Standard or DataCenter. Choosing to install in core or with a UI doesn't change the fact that you've installed either Standard or DataCenter.
Also, from a support perspective, you can use remote tools in order to perform common tasks, such as checking the event log, restarting services, etc.

Hyper-V VM Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 Network Problems
Hi Guys,
I am trying to setup a new VM in my lab (I am using windows 8.1 in my host) with Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. I already installed the integration services in that VM, the network adapter is ok (Hyper-V network adapter). Well, everything it seems to be
ok, but my W2K3 Machine keeps getting 169.xxx ip. My host is wireless , the virtual switch is ok, since I have other 4 VM (W2K8, W2K8R2, W2012, W2012R2) working fine with that switch and having access to the internet, just this VM with W2K3 is not working.
Do you guys can help ?
ThanksPlease check the properties of your NIC adapter in W2K3 if the Client for Microsoft Network is installed.
And also try to compare the network setting for other VMs NICs in Hyper-V to find the deference.
I would create new VM and install clean W2K3 for testing.

Hi all;
Suppose I have created a two-node Hyper-V cluster with a fibre channel shared storage in Windows Server 2012. Everything work fine except some issues. One of the is that when I want to configure the cluster to add a VM as its cluster resource, the following
error message appears:
An error occurred while determining the state of this clustered role in the cluster. The remote procedure call failed with error 800706BE.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I have tested many possible solutions without any success. The actions that I have done so far are mentioned in the following and the results of them have been said, too.
When I restart the servers, everything are good but after some times when I reopen Failover Cluster Manager on one of the servers, the snap-in related to my cluster name does not load. Please look at the following figure:
And when I want to connect to my cluster name, the following error message appears:
Note: The above problem appears randomly regarding to servers. In the other hand, after the restart, one of the servers acts as the above statement.
The following error message is the result of the DTCPing utility:

portqry.exe -n srv04 -e 135 -p TCP exits with return code 0x00000000.
I have read the KB197814 and did the steps in it, restarted both servers, but the problem did not resolved.
I have check both servers for RPC Service status and in both servers it has started.
The both servers are alive and can ping each other by their IP address and name.
The firewall of both servers is off and I stopped the Windows Firewall service COMPLETELY.
Any services and applications that are depending on RPC have problems. For example when I want o remotely manages the services on these servers by using Services.msc console, the following error message appears:
Error 1726: The remote procedure call failed.

Hyper-v on windows server 2012r2 essentials!
hi,
I read just this blog about virtualisation
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn293253.aspx now my question is :
1-is this blog is about running essentaials on other OS for example server standaard or it is runnung Essentials on essential server as virtual server? enjoying of Essentials 2012r2 twice one as a host server ,other as virtual server?
I am going to test this essential tomorrow and try to make my own virtual server to see what it is all about.
so Do I have to follow all this complicated instruction on the blog above ?
I have once enabled hyper -V on windows 8 and installed windows 7 on it .it was not so complicated. I have also used virtualistion software of oracle and installed windows 8 on it very simply .
I don't understand why on server things got to be done in some complicated way?
thanks
johan
h.davidHi:
Sometimes Microsoft "moves in mysterious ways" to paraphrase an old expression. I have not read all of the article you linked to, but I think the operative part of the opening is:
"After OEM has done the appropriate configuration, which will be described in detail in the later sections, the end user can choose to deploy Windows Server Essentials as a virtualized instance, or perform a physical deployment."
OEM means a large "tier one" company that manufactures hardware and has a special relationship with MS. Not a system builder or an end user. If you choose to follow the steps in that document I suspect you will be supporting yourself.
What is supported by MS is to install regular server (standard or enterprise/data center) in hyperV mode and install essentials as a guest VM, as well as another VM.

Requirement to have 3 hyper-v in Windows Server 2012 R2 Std
Hi,
I want to configure three Hyper-V in my Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard.
1. ERP System
2. Mail Server
3. AD
What requirement or license do I need to have?
Thank You.as per my knowledge if you want to use 3 Application you can run one application on Host and other 2 Application on virtual instances.
that is not accurate.
As per MS documentation, if you run two virtual instances, the host (hypervisor) may only be used for hypervisor functions, it may not be used for applications.
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/briefs/virtual-licensing.aspx
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
All physical processors need to be licensed. Each license covers up to two physical processors.
You may run the server software in one physical OSE and in up to two virtual OSEs for each license you assign. If you run all of the permitted instances the instance in the physical OSE can only be used to manage the virtual OSEs.

Clustering Free Hyper-V or Windows Server 2012 Standard with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
Hi,
Is anyone running a cluster which has Datacenter 2012 clustered with either Standard 2012 or Hyper-V 2012?
I have seen posts here and elsewhere that say it is possible but when I rang Microsoft Licencing team to discuss licensing in this scenario they advised me that the hardware and OS on each clustered server must be identical.
Now I'm really confused.
Thanks,
Please repost in the proper forum:

How to import a virtual machine to a Hyper-V server by programme on Windows server 2012 ?
Hi
As we know, Hyper-V of Windows server 2012 can support importing a VM without exporting it first manually now.
So I try to code a programme to do it.
I use the method "ExportVirtualSystemEx" of "Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService". referenced by
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379583(v=vs.85).aspx
But the error said that "You can import a virtual machine only if you used Hyper-V to create and export it."
Since we can import an unexported virtual machine in Hyper-V of windows server 2012 manually, so is there any API to support to do it by programme ?Hi vincent
Thanks for your infomation. It is really useful for us.
I 'd like to know How to adjust path ?
When I use command 'import-vm' to import VM, I got the error "import-vm : Unable to import virtual machine due to configuration errors. Please use Compare-VM to repair the virtual machine."
I try to fix this error referenced by
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848612.aspx
I ran the commands as bellow :
$report = compare-vm -path 'J:\HyperV\VM2008R2_1\Virtual Machines\6D2B5BF6-0BC0-4B1C-86BA-5A28DAB3DFCF.xml'
$report.Incompatibilities | fl
and got the information:

But this web page don't mentioned how to fix the "Virtual Hard Disk file not found" error.
and I don't want to fix the VMNetworkAdapter issue by disconnect it.
So could you told me how to modify the virtual hard disk file path and VMNetworkAdapter to make sure that I can import the virtual machine successfully? -
Windows Server 2012 Failover Cluster (Hyper-V) Event Id 1196
Hi All,
I just installed Failover Cluster for Hyper-V on windows server 2012 with 2 nodes. I got following error event id 1196.
reCreated / deleted Cluster Host A record on DNS and nothing happened.
Any suggestion?
There is similar topic but it couldnt help
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverClustering/thread/2ad0afaf-8d86-4f16-b748-49bf9ac447a3/
RegardsHi,
You may refer to this article to troubleshoot this issue;
Event ID 1196 — Network Name Resource Availability
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd354022(v=WS.10).aspx
Check the following:
Check that on the DNS server, the record for the Network Name resource still exists. If the record was accidentally deleted, or was scavenged by the DNS server, create it again, or arrange to have a network administrator create it.
Ensure that a valid, accessible DNS server has been specified for the indicated network adapter or adapters in the cluster.
Check the system event log for Netlogon or DNS events that occurred near the time of the failover cluster event. Troubleshooting these events might solve the problem that prevented the clustered Network Name resource from registering the DNS name.
For more information please refer to following MS articles:

VMware to Hyper-V template conversion issue for Windows Server 2008 template
Hello,
I am attempting to convert a Windows server 2k8 template from VMware to Hyper-V. The hosts are Cisco UCS B200 M3 blades running Win2k12 and ESX 5.5 respectively. The template boots successfully in VMware and runs through its post install process without
any issues. When I convert the template to Hyper-V the guest will display the windows splash screen and then I get the error "windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computers hardware”. I attempted to force the OOBE process
by running msoobe.exe from the CLI but got the same error on restart.
The particularly strange thing is that if I boot the syspreped guest in VMware, interrupt the post install process, shutdown the guest, then convert to Hyper-V the guest will boot successfully in Hyper-V. At this point I uninstall the VMware tools, install
the windows virtual guest services, and re-sysprep the guest. Sadly the result is the same, on boot I get "windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computers hardware”. I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2466753/en-us but
it references Win2k8R2 specifically. Does anyone have any ideas on how this issue could be manifesting itself
in Win2k8?
As an aside I was able to successfully convert a Win2k8R2 template successfully using the same process, any input on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Toll_Hou5eHi Toll_Hou5e,

I don’t familiar with VMware template but base on my experience, the VMware View Connection template can execute the Windows template image sysprep program, VMware may configured
some system option, you can ask your software vendor for the further help.
