Hyper-V Server Network Config

Hello,
I am having issues connecting a newly installed Hyper-v server
I have an IBM blade that I have removed VMware off & installed Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Not Windows 2012 R2). The server has 4 1gb nics with 4 Vlans presented down them, they are all trunk ports.
I am unable to find even a couple of posts that make sense (at least in my head).
Is the process, install OS, team cards (if you want to), create virtual switch, but if so where do I put the IP address for the parent partition?
Is it on the team, it can't be on the virtual switch as it is not a nic.
At the moment I am happy with building the system, but configuring the network seems very contradictory on how it can be achieved.
Thanks, Matt

You are correct, when you team the adapters it will create a new adapter using a multiplexor adapter. For a pretty basic setup you would do the steps as follows.
This assumes you have out of band or physical access with the GUI edition installed.
Install operating system like usual drivers and everything. ( I recommend server core for hyper-v, then use your windows 8 client to manage it. Or use powershell.)
In server manager you go to local server, you should see an option in the right hand window that says network teaming. Go into that part and build the team using your physical adapters. Assign IP addresses to the network adapter teams. (skip this if you
are not doing teaming)
Add the hyper-v role.
After it reboots twice you will have the hyper-v manager installed on the start screen. Go into the Hyper-v Manager and build a "new virtual switch" and specify that it's external and choose your team or the adapter you will use. If you uncheck
the "share management" option, that will hide it from the parent OS and doesn't require and IP. If you left share management, that would allow you to utilize that adapter. Typically that is for when you have 1 NIC or a very limited number of networks.
The adapter you specify for the virtual switch will be in trunk mode and will listen for the VLAN's if you have a supported adapter. Which shouldn't be an issue for your server.
As you build machines, you just specify your VLAN tag per virtual machine.

    Hi
    I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V server. It runs a Windows 2012 R2 VM (called
    server-1).
I want to backup the VM to a network location (\\network-1\server-1_backup$). To do this, I installed Windows Server Backup from the command line and configured a backup to look like this:

But when I run this backup manually, I get the following error:

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

"If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to

It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.
"Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines."
Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

  • Why Win2k8 R2 VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 behaves erratically?

    Hello,
I realized this strange problem with Windows 2008 R2 VMs running on Hyper-V Server 2012. My Hyper-V Server 2012 host has been running mix of VMs just fine. I've a Linux VM running, a couple of Windows 2012 R2 VMs, a Windows 8.
I created three new VMs, gave them decent hardware. 4 GB of RAM each. A fixed VHDX file of 40 GB. I left processor allocation to Hyper-V. Windows 2008 R2 ISO was mounted to all three. Installation started. The VMs were plugged into an external network to
access internet for Windows activation and software updates.
Installation went smooth. I could log on and kick off windows updates installation. it took a reboot but when it came back, strange things started happening.
First, after VM won't respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL command from the VM console; saying 'VM doesn't did not respond to command'. I inserted integration start up disk from Media Menu on VM's console window. It allowed me to log on this time. I continued
to download/install windows updates to update and complete that. All important updates were selected (even in first step above) and none of optional update was selected.
This round of updates download/install updates finished and VM rebooted. Again, when it became available it stopped responding to any of commands sent to VM, Reset, Stop,Shut down, Turn off and won't allow CTRL+ALT+DEL. Strangely this time it didn't
like accepting mounting integration services start up disk. The message displayed; when any of these actions were performed, is "RPC service not available".
What could go wrong with Windows 2008 R2 VM created just now behaving like this?
Did someone experience issues like this with just built Windows 2008 R2 VMs? Please share and advise.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

    Hi Adam,
Indeed it is odd. The flow has been following, and I doubt any of these steps had caused any issue.
Step 1. VM started, booted from ISO, installed OS, Reboot. (usual)
Step 2. VM became available, password configured, logged on, checked DHCP assigned TCP/IP Settings.
Step 3. WUAPP invoked to download install updates, updates required reboot, VM rebooted.
Step 4. VM became available, won't respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL  (In hyper-V VM console DEL is replaced by End).
Step 5. Integration startup disk inserted, waited couple of seconds, VM allowed CTRL+ALT+DEL.
Step 6. WUAPP invoked again to continue download/install of updates, it finished, VM rebooted.
Step 7. VM became available, won't respond to any command sent to VM from console, just complains (RCP Service not available). Won't accept integration startup disk even.
BTW, the ISO used is trial edition of Win2k8 R2; popularly available for download, the
    180 days trial edition.
I couldn't get to stage to assign IP to VM, because I wanted to install all important updtes before I do any thing else.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

  • Hyper-V Server 2012 Migration Questions

    Hello All,
This is my first post here, but I have used these forums many times for information. Sorry in advance for the long post.
I have a few questions regarding migration to Hyper-V server 2012 for my production environment. I have done quite a bit of reading, but I have a few direct questions and I would like to get some direct answers.
My current production environment consists of one PowerEdge 2900 with 2 Xeon X5460 Quad Core 3.16GHz CPUs, 24 GB of RAM and a RAID 10 consisting of 8, 500 GB HDDs for a total of 2TB of storage. I am currently running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise w/ GUI as the
Hyper-V host OS. I have 4 virtual machines all also running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The 4 virtual machines consist of 1 domain controller, 1 Exchange Server with Exchange 2010 Standard, 1 Server running SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and the remaining server
running IIS with FTP and HTTP.
The network topology is as follows….
Hopefully it is clear from my diagram that the Hyper-V host OS is connected to the same physical network as the domain, but is not a joined to the domain. I set it up this way because I had concerns about connectivity and manageability because the domain
controller is a guest VM. Also, the IIS server is on a completely different physical network independent of the domain.
What I would like to accomplish is the migration of the above environment to Hyper-V Server 2012 as is. I want to keep my existing guest VMs unchanged and running Server 2008 R2 for now as well as keep the existing network topology intact.
I have 3 additional servers in a separate test environment that would be able to serve as temporary storage or whatever is needed for the migration process.
Here are the two main things I would like to accomplish with this migration…
    1. Make the transition from Server 2008 R2 to Hyper-V Server 2012 as a host OS.
    2. Migrate virtual hard disks from .VHD to the new .VHDX format.
All that being said, I have finally come to my questions regarding this process.
First and foremost, I would obviously need to back up my current setup in case something goes horribly wrong during the migration. My question regarding the initial backup is would it be better to do a bare metal backup of the Hyper-V host or should I do
individual backups (bare-metal?) of the Guest VMs from within their operating systems?
Second, since I plan to use Hyper-V Server 2012, I will have to manage the host OS using the RSAT from a domain joined client running Windows 7 Professional. How much of a pain is it going to be to setup RSAT and manage the non-domain joined host from a
domain joined client? Is there a better way without using SCVMM or using Server 2012 w/ a GUI as the host OS?
Third, are there any concerns I should have, precautions I should take or procedures I need to do before, during or after the migration regarding the existing VMs and the new virtualized hardware environment on the same physical host?
Forth, should I use the trial version of SCVMM 2012 SP1 (or another previous version) to perform the migration? What should I be aware of using SCVMM for the migration and then discontinuing its use after the migration is complete and moving to management
    using the RSAT?
Fifth, if I don’t use SCVMM for the migration, what is the best procedure for moving the VMs? Should I just copy the VHDs to a temporary storage location, install Hyper-V server 2012, copy the VHDs back, create new VMs and attach the VHDs or should I use
    the export/import process?
Number six, when is the best time to migrate the VHDs to VHDX format and what would be the best method?
And finally, do I need to worry about USN rollback with a single domain controller? From my reading, this seems to be a point of disagreement. Some people say it could happen while others say it won’t. Is there any point during the migration process where
it could occur either during the copying of VHDs or from the switch to VHDX?
Again, sorry for the long post and thanks for staying with me this far. Any information would be much appreciated

    1) As Jens said below with Windows Server 2012 you can simple copy the configuration files and VHDs from a 2008 R2 server to a 2012 server and import them - they one caveat to this is that any vlan configuration is lost and you have to simply re-create it.
Optionally you can also export the virtual machines from Windows Server 2008 R2 and then import them on Windows Server 2012.
    2) Remote management in a workgroup does have some caveat's associated with it - take a look at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2009/08/07/hvremote-refresh.aspx.  Generally I would recommend joining the Hyper-V management operating system to the domain - not just because of these issues but for a number of other features to work properly
    (see below)
    3) I always recommend validating the hardware and environment after the installation before migrating critical workloads to it - testing networking, backup etc... to make sure they function as expected.  Also ensure that you upgrade the integration
components in the VM's after the migration.
    4) That is an option - though you might find you like SCVMM
    5) Recreating VM's using existing VHD's has some issues for example the BIOS GUID changes, all of the NIC's are re-plug and played etc... When possible copying the configuration or using export is much better.
    6) The sooner the better - VHDx has a number of significant advantages, you can do the migration using the Hyper-V manager UI (edit disk) or via powershell with Convert-VHD.  Do keep in mind that during the conversation you need 2x the space (for the
    original and the new VHDx).
    7) In the past you could get into trouble if you for example snapshotted an AD virtual machine and than reverted it - taking one offline and then brining it back online was never a problem.  In Windows Server 2012 we addressed this with a feature called
    generation ID's.
Domain considerations...  A few things to keep in mind regarding the choice to not domain join the Hyper-V server.
    - You can't live migrate virtual machines
    - You can't utilize Hyper-V over SMB
    - Management is more difficult and less secure

  • Hyper-V Server 2012, CAU, Unable to drain roles

    Hi,
I have a 2 node failover cluster running Hyper-V Server 2012.  Draining one of the nodes for CAU fails without any obvious errors logged.  All of the VMs live migrate successfully, after three re-tries node drain fails, the node leaves maintenance
mode, and VMs live migrate back to their original locations.  I've reviewed all the event logs on each server and I'm stumped.
All of the networks and disks are in an UP status.  CSVs are not redirected and they are all owned by the host having difficulty draining roles.
It seems the best thing to do is to run the cluster validation tests, specifically the storage tests.  I won't have a maintenance window to bring
everything down for quite a while however and some of the storage tests are known to be disruptive.
    Does anyone have a suggestion?
    Thank you

  • Hyper-V Server: How can I update drivers with limited Device Manager access?

I have a brand new Intel server, SR2625URLX. I want to use Hyper-V server R2. I have been having some issues with the networking, and Intel wants me to update to the latest drivers which have been certified for R2 versions of 2008, Hyper-V, etc. It was a struggle just to get it so I can see the device manager, but come to find out it is read-only when using remotely and there is no local GUI for it. I need to update the drivers. I tried copying the drivers to a share, and running this on both of the inf files thaat were part of the driver set, but the driver did not change (even after a reboot):
    pnputil -i -a <driverinf>
What else can I do to update the drivers for my NIC's?

pnputil seems to be the way to go.
Did you copy the inf files locally?
If you have any virtual networks defined, you might need to remove them, update the drivers, and then re-create them.
I am thinking that there might be some device not being identified properly or a file lock.  Also, the drivers must be signed properly or they will not load.
I just noticed this from the server core list:
To obtain a list of drivers that are installed on the server running a Server Core installation
     • At a command prompt, type:  sc query type= driver
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservercore/thread/d43465c4-66e6-481f-a060-0fba173fbcec
Also, be aware that Server 2008 certified is not equal to Hyper-V certified - so don't let the tech support person tell you there isn't a difference.

    Hi
We have a small company in that we have 50 machines, i am having windows 2012 r2 server, i installed Hyper-V with that i have created virtual OS(winxp and win7) in the Hyper-V server. My question is how to access them in client Machines, Can Anybody help

    Hi Meer,
In addition ,  you need to use external virtual switch for these VMs that are used for RDP connection from clients .

  • Recommended and supported Hyper-v Server configurations

I am looking for a document that will give me some suggested Hyper-v supported and recommended server configuration. Recently our company rolled out two Hyper-V servers. The host system is configured to be the Domain Controller.
One server was configured to be a Host Server Domain Controller and a virtual server Exchange server.  The Exchange server failed three times.  The host domain Controller had been put into services and was active.  I finally called Microsoft
and was told this would not a supported or recommended configuration and it would continue to fail.  The technical help I had was very good and he pointed me in the right direction to building it directly on the domain controller.  Since the Exchange
server had already been built and the scheme to the domain controller had been extended this was horrendous but it worked.  "Thank you Microsoft technical team."
The second Hyper-V server is setup the same the host server is the DC.  The current virtual server is a SQL server.  This seems to be working. We had some issues at first with network connections but I made some DNS entries and it seems to be stable
now.  This system is to have an Exchange host added to it and I'm worried that it will have the same issues as the first server.  I would like to add it directly to the DC as I finally did the first time but I'm worried it will make the SQL server
    fail.
This is currently in a production environment?  Does anyone have any suggestion or can you point me to a good tech document that discusses configurations?
    Thank you.
    Bonnie Whalon

    Hi Sir,
    >>I would like to add it directly to the DC as I finally did the first time but I'm worried it will make the SQL server fail.
As far as I know , install exchagne on a DC is not recommended (I know it should work).
As to hyper-v serve , it is still not recommended to enable other role on hyper-v host .
I would suggest you to create two VMs , one is DC , other one works as exchange server (If it is possible please build another DC VM for redundant and backup them regularly ) .
Virtualize exchange please refer to following article :

  • NIC Teaming for hyper-v serve.

I have installed windows server 2012 r2 on server. Server is having network adapters i have given static ip address to both nic's
LAN1: - 192.168.0.100 & LAN2: - 192.168.0.101 after enabling NIC Teaming server have added one more adapter called
"Network Adapter Multiplexor" after this above mentioned ip address are not responding to PING or any requests. Then i have given
192.168.0. 102 ip address to Multiplexor and its started working.
So my question do i need to give ip address to LAN1 &
LAN2 or i can just create team and give ip address to Multiplexor
Also if i installed hyper-v server on it will it give me failover thing for this machine.????
    Akshay Pate

    Hello Akshay,
In brief, after creating the Teaming adapter (Multiplexor) you'll use it's address for future networking purposes.
Regarding the lack of ping, I had the same "issue" and it seems like is block by the Microsoft code itself. Still couldn't find how to allow it.
When digging into W2k12(&R2) NIC Teaming this two pages were very explanative and usefull:

    Hi Akshay Pate,
Hyper-V Server 2012 is a FREE (yes, completely free!) purpose-built product that includes the core of Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V.
The result is a streamlined Type-1 hypervisor that is optimized for remote management and provides the same virtualization scalability and high availability features as the Hyper-V role in the full version of Windows Server - including up to 320 logical
processors per Hyper-V host, up to 4TB of physical memory, Live Migration, Storage Migration, Virtual Machine Replication, Clustering and more!

  • Connectivity Issue - Server Network

    Hi you all
I'm having connectivity issues, from my network, with the Servers Network that's located behind the Ace 4710... I'm monitoring the servers and i get Timeouts with a simple ICMP monitor...
I never have problems regarding the access to the Admin context, but in the context that i use to load balance the applications i have problems
    reaching directly the servers...
For example... I have two servers and i lose connectivity with one of them for about 2-5 minutes and then i regain connectivity... If i undo the ft group and redo the ft group i regain instant access to the server...
I cleared all the config for the actual loadbalance and left the config regarding the client and server networks...
    Any help??
    Thanks in advance...

    Thanks for the reply Gilles...

  • Use hyper-v manager to Hyper-V server with public IP

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a dedicated server online, and a fresh copy of hyper-v has been installed. This is the free version, and not what's included with Windows Server 2012 R2. I have a quick question. I can RDP into my server, which is located on the
Internet. When I try to connect an MMC snapin, like Hyper-V manager, it is inaccessible. Is there a way to manage hyper-v servers found on the Internet? And, if so, is this a good idea?
    Thanks to all that reply,
    Mike

    Thanks for the replies,
All of these tools seem to work for computers on the same network. I am trying to connect to a hyper-v server on the Internet using hyper-v manager.
    Mike
    Mike,
Put your thinking cap on buddy :)
You say you can RDP to your Hyper-V host. I say do NOT do that for common daily tasks. Not a best practice.
You say you want to manage Hyper-V on your remote Hyper-V host. I say do it from a Win8.1 VM on the host.
You say I have no VMs on my new remote Hyper-V host. I say build your first VM via Powershell. Once it's done, RDP to the VM not the host, and manage the host from the VM.

  • Rebooted Hyper V Server and seeing some issues please help

I think it was shared from the host. Those screenshots are from the host not in a VM. I think the previous tech created a virtual drive perhaps even spanned it across multiple ones and had that as the share but I can't find the volume or something. I'm new to this network so I am unsure how it was setup.

Hey everyone. I rebooted out Windows 2012 Hyper V server to install some ram (which didnt go well because the power supply apparently was overused so I took it back out and booted the server back up until a new power supply comes in) and there appear to be some issues/changes after the reboots.First let me say I am not 100% up to speed with current Hyper V capabilities and such I have been using VMware the past couple years but am in a environment with hyper v now.
Before rebooting I noticed in the Disk Management section that there were a TON of disks reflected there. Many of them if not half of them were blue colored and didnt have a drive letter accociated with them and had names like {234234n-2njnkj32-njn3krjn23k-kjsdjkfnsj} I believe these were like VHDX disks if I am not mistaken however I am not really sure why they showed like...

  • Hyper v in network

    Hi can someone help please.
    here is my configuration
    host1 X.X.10.1
    host2 X.X.10.2
host1 and host 2 has 2 VM  each
on host 1 hyper-v i can see the ip of host1 10.1 that is using nic #1
on host2 hyper-v  i can see the ip of host2 10.2 that is using nic #2
i installed server 2012 on VM on host 1 that i gave a static ip and i assigned it to a virtual switch using nic#2 on host1
on hyper v i can see the virtual ethernet nic#2 but with a randon ip adress so i did change that ip the same as my server 2012 static ip adress.
I install a server 2012 Dc on host2 VM assigned it a virtual switch too and allocated a nic card 2
on hyper v i can see the virtual ethernet nic#2 but with a randon ip so i changed it too and i add the DNS ip of my DC.
what i did is i changed all DNS ip on all NIC on hyper v host 1 and 2.
now i want my server 2012 to join the domain but it has a static ip. how can i make it join the domain?
    my DC ip is X.X.2.40
    DNS X.X.X.40
    thanks for your help

I am not totally clear on your configuration.
Your Hyper-V Server management OS should only have one IP address.
Your VMs should have their own unique IP addresses.
