Hyper-V Shared Disks Windows 2012 r2

Hi,
I have windows 2012 r2 intalled in my laptop (has Hyper-V role installed) and I want to setup a couple of VMs for lab purposes. The VMs will have AD and some of them I want to configured them as clusters for demonstration. I try to use the "Enable virtual
hard disk sharing" but I get an error saying that the storage is not supported.
Does anyone has a link or tutorial how to configure this?
PS: I have a clean SSD drive dedicated for the VMs in the laptop.
Thank you.

Hi JPKI,
the good News you can also use/show this sexy Feature without having Shared Storage, you can not use it for production but i guess you will use it for the same as i do, doing demo and train your self right ?
here you find the instructions, a blog from Mr. SoFS, Jose Baretto
http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2013/07/31/windows-server-2012-r2-storage-step-by-step-with-storage-spaces-smb-scale-out-and-shared-vhdx-virtual.aspx
Import Point here again "The specific Shared VHDX configuration shown in this blog post is not supported"
But works great, so the instruction in short is, after doing all needed steps from the Blog, like installing Failover Cluster Feature etc... configure your SSD which you want to use as e.g. V:\ and
on every boot you Need to fire following command " fltmc.exe attach svhdxflt V:\" which tells the System that you can have shared VHDx on that Location.
Read the "3) Summarized instructions for experts"
Sound great ? yes it is, works perfect and so you can do testing and training yourself around that Stuff, e.g. build a Virtual SoFS.
Happy Computing
Udo
Excellent.
Exactly what I was looking for, and is working on VM Gen2 as well. "fltmc.exe attach svhdxflt :\<driveLetter>" is is definitely the key command here.
Thank you :)

From what I know there are no plans to back-port shared VHDX to plain vanilla Windows Server 2012. Shared VHDX is one of the key selling points to make people upgrade to R2 so it's financially not interesting to MSFT to support new features with non-R2.

  • Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1. Hyper-V Windows 2012 R2 Preview

    Hello,
I am new to Hyper-V. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2  Preview on a physical server and installed Hyper-V role on it.
I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V as a guest OS.
From Hyper-V manager, I created a VM and supplied 2008 R2 ISO as a boot device.
Windows 2008 R2 ISO is bootable. I have used the same ISO on VMware and it works.
I connected the VM and powered on, but OS instalaltion doesn't start.
I get error " Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1." Below is th screen capture.
How to fix this problem ?
How do I go to Hyper-v VM BIOS settings ?
How do I change the boot sequence for Hyper-V VM ?
    Thanks ! Jayawardhane

I was getting the same error but with WINDOWS 2012 STD Edition.
My case: I was trying to use the existing WINDOWS 2012 VHDX with Generation 2 Virtual Machine, as I wanted to make use of 'Virtual Hard Disk Sharing' feature which is only supported on SCSI Controller. But during boot, it looked for UEFI code, whereas
I had created VHDX using BIOS boot partition. So I guess, In order to use 'VHD Sharing' feature, I have to convert boot partition to GPT which supports UEFI.
If I use the Generation 1 virtual machine, and then change the VHDX Controller from IDE to SCSI from settings, I see the option 'VHD Sharing' getting enabled, but unfortunately the Generation 1 BIOS does not have support for SCSI only IDE.

There a few features included in Windows Server  Hyper-V that are not included in Client Hyper-V. These include:
Remote FX capability to virtualize GPUs (software GPU in RDP 8)
    Live VM migration
    Hyper-V Replica
    SR-IOV networking
    Synthetic fibre channel.

  • Problem Intalling hyper-v Windows 2012 R2 on a Windows 8.1 Pro machine

    First Try:
I am trying to install hyper-v Windows server 2012 from the Microsoft site below on to a Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V Manager.
The Windows 2012 R2 ISO I downloaded from the link at the bottom of the screen.
I am downloading and copying this ISO to CD.  In hyper-v manager, right pane, I am clicking New, Virtual Machine, Next, Name (2012 R2), check the box “Store the virtual machine in a different location (F:\Windows 2012 R2), which is
a partition that will used for all my hyper-v OSs.  Click Next, select Generation 2, Next, Startup memory 512 with box checked “Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine, Next, Configure Network connection (chose my virtual switch I setup
in Virtual Switch Manager, Next.  For Connect Hard Disk, I chose “Create virtual hard disk, and went with the defaults. Clicked Next, and in Installation Options, I chose “Install an operating system from a bootable image file (media Image
file (iso) – browsed to my DVD device and chose the saved iso), and then clicked Finish button.
The virtual machine “2012 R2” appeared in the off state.  I double clicked it to open the virtual machine, and clicked the start button.
Received Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    PXE Network using IPv4 ……..
    PXE-E18: Server response Timeout.
    Boot Failed.  EFI Network
    Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    No Operating System was Loaded.
Press a key to retry the boot sequence…..

    Second Try:
I did the same process but changed select Generation 2 to Generation 1, and browsed to the ISO saved on my HDD rather than from a CD.
This time the Windows 2012 installed, but came up with a blue screen with the time showing in big numbers, and the words “Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in.
When I clicked Ctrl-Alt-Del:  the PC screen cleared and showed selections (Lock, Switch User, Sign Out, Task Manager).
I tried to switch user to my Microsoft Account, but it only redisplayed the previous blue screen with time ect…

You mount the ISO file directly to the VM, stored on the local disk.
If you mount the ISO and boot into a VM you should not get a logon prompt - you should get the ISO boot prompt to install and if you fail to respond the VHD is booted.
I am suspecting you have a  corrupt download of the ISO.

What I have done to try to troubleshoot this issue is:
    Reinstalled DPM - No sucess
Restarted the Hyper-v Host - No sucess
I'm at the point where I am out of ideas and google hasn't given me much.
    /Joseph

    i have the same error.
"vssadmin list writers" shows last error unknown for all writers
    disk space is sufficient
ntbackup of systemdrive and systemstate runs fine.
i installed KB940349 which fixes some vss related issues but the problem is still there.
    any ideas?
    Thanks.
When you have vssadmin reporting unknown error the only way to reset the vsswriters (as I understand it please correct me if I'm wrong :) ) is to restart the machine. The Fellenator is correct, make use that the vsswriter is working correctly since this
is the main function DPM is using when taking backup. He's also right in saying that it's outside the scope! Create a new thread on your error, then you will get much better responce!

  • Windows 2012 storage server and tier with external SSD disks

    Hi

    Hi
My query is in case I have one SAN storage with SSD and FC disks connected to Windows 2012 storage server, will Windows be able to manage Tier between two types of disks if the volumes are properly assigned and formated?
    Regards
Short answer: No, not automatically. Long answer: Yes, it can be done but with some tricks. First you'll have to make your SAN export LUs built from flash and from spindles. At least one of each (see URL below). Then you'll have to build storage spaces (even
clustered but that's not officially supported for non-SAS disks) from them.
    See:
Configure Tiering with Windows Server 2012 R2
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/10/21/storage-spaces-how-to-configure-storage-tiers-with-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
Both LUs would have non-SSD type reported so you'll have manually assign types with PowerShell what's flash and what's spindle.
"Notice that the SSD devices were detected as SSD media.  However, in this case the physical drives show as unknown.
If yours are not detected like in this example, they should be set correctly which can be done using PowerShell. "
    Hope this helped :)

  • Is it possible to Migrate Live VMs from a Windows 2012 Hyper-V Cluster to a different 2012 R2 Cluster?

At the moment I'm in a bit of dilemma because I know that Windows 2012 supports "Shared Nothing Live Migration" but recently I got to know that this feature is available for stand alone Hyper-V Servers. My Setup is that I have
3 Servers running Windows Server 2012 Hyper-v Failover Cluster and I need to migrate everything to a new cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 and offcourse some VMs can't be turned off during migration so I need to do this live during production hours.
Another note is that both clusters will be running on the different LUNs since each cluster has its own CSVs. I need to know if it is possible to migrate such VMs/Roles Live without have any downtime of the VMs/Roles?

Yes, but one exception - live migration works only on "compatible cpu's". There actually is a setting in CPU for forcing compatibility
mode. If that is not set, and you mvoe for example from AMD to Intel, then - this is not possible in live migration, cluster or not.

  • Exporting and Importing Virtual servers with Windows 2012 R2 Hyper V

    Hi
We are looking for various options / best practice in exporting and importing VSs between Windows 2012 R2 servers. Live migration we tested between servers in same VLAN and it's fine, but some servers are in different VLAN and hardware firewall is there
in between. So we exported the VS and while importing it, there is no option to export each Virtual disk to separate partitions / LUNs. Is it fine to create a new VS in the new server and just copy the VDs from the other HV host server, or exporting and importing
    is the only proper method?
    Thanks in advance
    LMS

    Hi Laljeev,
Please allow me to state my understanding of the two methods :
1.when you want to copy vhd you may need to shutdown the VM , further more if there is some snapshots I think it will be a  trouble .
    2.  "export" you still need to shutdown VM but it doesn't have the trouble with snapshots .
The other way I will use is , "move"  all of the VM's data to external disk then import it into destination hyper-v server (it can decrease the off-line time of VMs).

  • High Network Utilization on HeartBeat and LiveMigration networks - Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster

    Hi all,
    I have just setup a fresh Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster with 4 nodes.
    Config:
    Network:
    2 x Networks for iSCSI
    1 x VM network 1
    1 x VM network 2
    1 x Heartbeat
    1 x LiveMigration
    Disks:
    5 GB = Quorum
    2 x 2.99 TB (Deduplication enabled)
The problem I am getting is that HeartBeat and LiveMigration (both configured with Cluster Only traffic) have alot of traffic on them even though no LiveMigration (the only card configured for LiveMigration) is going on.
All network configuration is the same as it was in Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster which these machines where running before (not upgrade, fresh install and migration) and did not have this "problem".
Has anyone experienced this or have a solution to this?

  • Windows 2008 r2 guests blue screen on Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with e5 2670-v2 processors

    Hello all,
We have a new hyper-v infrastructure deployed in two brand new Dell R720 Servers with 384GB of Memory and dual Intel e5 2670-v2 processors. This infrastructure is replacing an existing hyper-v 2008 R2 and all the guests are being migrated to this new cluster.
The issue we are seeing is our 2008 r2 guests blue screening ocasionally with 0x0000001a,0x0000004e or 0x00000050 bugchecks.
All this guests are configured with dynamic memory and with the integration components up to date. These same guests were running with no problems in the hyper-v 2008r2 cluster.
When searching i found this article from vmware that pretty much describes what we are facing:
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2073791
Are you aware of the same problem with this kindd of hardware on windows 2012 r2 hyper-v?
    Thanks!

Meanwhile i found this May 2014 update on the intel specification of the CPU we are using:
CA135 Incorrect Page Translation when EPT is enabled
    Problem:
If EPT (Extended Page Tables) is enabled, then a complex sequence of internal processor events may result in unexpected page faults or use of incorrect page translations.
    Implication:
Due to this erratum a guest may crash or experience unpredictable system behavior.
    Workaround:
It is possible for the BIOS to contain a workaround for this erratum.

I have setup a physical server with Windows Server 2012 R2. It has only the Hyper-V role installed. The physical server has two NICs that I have teamed with Hyper-V port as the load balancer. I have created 1 VM on this Hyper-V server that is a
Generation 2 VM running Windows Server 2012 R2. It has one NIC in the guest OS that is connected to the Hyper-V switch.
Now the Guest OS works fine and network connectivity is great when using DHCP but when I configure a static IP address in the Guest OS all network connectivity is lost even with correct IP configuration. Is this something to do with a Gen 2 VM?
A little more background - We have another Hyper-V server running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same NIC teaming in the Host OS, on this Hyper-V there is a GEN 1 Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a static IP configured which is working normally.
    Any help is appreciated.

I have resolved the issue. It appeared the hard IP phones were using the same IP range that I was attempting to use so of course the VM could not use the IP Address. Silly mistake.
Elliot, I suggest you mark as Helpful and Answer any responses above that were helpful to you in getting this issue resolved. This is how the forums work.
For example, if a response mentioned "VM generation has no effect on the vNIC." and that pointed you in the direction of troubleshooting networking instead of wasting your time looking into VM generations, that may be considered "Helpful"
If a response mentioned "Make sure you're using valid IPv4 settings" and indeed you ended up having invalid IP settings such as a duplicate IP, this may be considered "Answer"

  • Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server Boot cannot boot normally

    I have a Windows 2012 R2 server with Hyper-V role installed.
The server will automatically reboot every few weeks.
Every time it reboot, the server will boot into the below screen instead of normally boot into windows.
I will need to manually startup the server in front of it.
Are there any ways to bypass the below "Choose an option" page?
I saw a related post in below, but it doesn't seems to be answered.

    Hi TM Yung,
It seems the data in event viewer is crushed, so I recommend to troubleshoot this issue firstly to show the right content of the event id 41, then investigate the reboot issue depending on this even.
Please make sure you logon with Administrator and check if the related .evtx file exists under the path C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs.
If the steps above can't work, please also try a clean boot in case of the installed driver causes this issue.
To perform a clean boot, please follow this article, after troubleshooting, please refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to start server normally:
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.
    Best Regards,
    Anna Wang
