Hyper V Snapshot Issue

Hello All,
I had one Hyper-V VM in that i took 5-6 snapshot's (Weekly). Due to this my physical HDD space is increased. So, i have deleted 2 snapshots and deleted some .avhd's.
After this process i have logged into the VM and found one drive was missing. Did checked the snapshot settings->IDE Controller-> Inspect-> "The differencing chain is broken." I lost all the files, but i have rebuilt the server from backup
data's.
Now i have 3 snapshots and one running vm, suppose if i delete the snapshot's it will merge to parent disk ?
Also please find below, in my 1st snapshot(12/14/2013) i have 3 .vhd's , in my 2nd snapshot (4/17/2014) i have 3 .avhd's , in my 3rd snapshot (4/18/2014) i have 2 .avhd's and in my running vm i have 3 .avhd's.
Time Office Virtual Machine – (12/14/2013 – 3:05.54 PM), it has 3 .vhd drives mapped.
(Backup Drive.vhd,
Time Office Virtual Machine.vhd,
D Drive.vhd)
2   Time Office Virtual Machine – (4/17/2014 – 9:32:30 AM), it has 3 .vhd drives mapped)

3  Time Office Virtual Machine – (4/18/2014 – 11:23:23 AM), it has 2 .vhd drives mapped)
(BackUp Drive_5EEA291E-1336-4C3D-A9B0-7E9DFF4776BE.avhd,
Time Office Virtual Machine_CDFA9194-0BDF-4659-8FF4-1B1692E7E0BB.avhd)
4       Now, Running Virtual Machine, it has 3 .vhd drives mapped)
(BackUp Drive_A5343054-3B38-49B1-8716-34FBD60AAC4D.avhd,
Time Office Virtual Machine_415E3759-F7AE-4F7E-9084-F30F13DED681.avhd,
D Drive.vhd)
Can anyone tell me which one is best method to merge the snapshots, because in one snapshot i have 2 .avhd and in another i have 3 .avhd .
Please guide me.
Thanks,
Sankar

Hyper-V 6.1 = 2008 R2 (if I recall my versions properly)
When a snapshot is taken all virtual disks attached to the VM end up with a new AVHD attached to them.
You should only manually merge in a panic, no other way, situation.
The problem that you now have is, you manually deleted a snapshot disk instead of allowing Hyper-V to manage it for you (by shutting down the VM).
Thus you describe another snapshot disk that is now an orphan, because you deleted its parent.
You have not answered if you have powered off the VM to allow Hyper-V to perform the merge that it can.
You have not stated if there is a backup where you can recover the deleted AVHD.
If you have deleted all snapshots from the VM - power it off an let Hyper-V merge what it can and recover space.  There will be events in the event logs that identify the missing AVHD and corresponding failures.
You can manually merge -

Read the entire article, all comments too.
Please be aware, that you have lost data.  How that impacts your VM is unknown, what change has been lost is unknown.

  • Hyper-V Snapshot Issue on Exchange server

    Hyper-v 2008 R2
    I have a 2TB host in which I am running 2 VM's
Exchange was a 900gb Fixed disk VM
    Terminal server 200gb Fixed.
I was working remotely on my iPhone on the Exchange server (I know, don't ask) when I think I accidentally hit the snapshot button inside of Hyperv Manager.
The user called and said the server stopped working and I quickly realized it unexpectedly rebooted and the Address Book service failed to start automatically. I was trying to navigate my way around on my phone and thats when I think I hit the snapshot button.
I didn't realize this until 2 days later when looking inside my VHDS folder that a new AVHD file was created that was 818gb and timestamped exactly when I was working on it remotely.
The original VHD file was dated 2 days earlier and 825gb
The snapshot is NOT showing up in Hyperv Manager at all so I'm not sure what the best next steps are.
I figured I would first take the VM offline and export it to a another location before doing anything to preserve the Exchange server. I am running a Barracuda so I'm not worried about losing any email as that will trap everything.
I noticed in the settings of Hyperv Manager for Exchange that it is using the AVHD file as the primary file.
    Questions
1 - If I take it offline, shouldn't the 2 files merge without me doing anything else? I just wasn't sure since the Snapshot does not show up in SCVMM or Hyperv manager.
2 - I should be able to see this process in SCVMM?
3- How long will it take to merge 800gb? I've seen varying results depending on disk speed, etc.
With an exchange server, this obviously needs to be done delicately without data loss. I assume my statement about the original Exporting of the VM will cover my bases for that?
    Thoughts on how to proceed?
    Thanks!
    Jim

Hyper-V 2008 R2..  This was prior to live merging of snapshots.
What I am guessing is: the snapshot was taken, and in panic the snapshot was deleted.
This means that the VM remains in a snapshotted state, but the snapshot is removed from the GUI.  Deleted snapshots do not show up in the GUI, but remain in place until the background merge process happens / is allowed to happen.
The only way for this snapshot to merge is to power off the VM and wait
    for the merge to happen.
You can verify this by looking for pending merge events in the Hyper-V event logs (  events -> applications and services -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Hyper-V*
if you want to before scheduling your offline time.
Merge speed depends on the amount of change.  You cannot predict it, you can only test to know.
Exporting the VM will keep the disk structure as it is.  Taking a snapshot then exporting the snapshot will create a single VHD (but will take just as long as the merge itself if not longer).
I would check the logs for pending merge events (just to confirm, safety), if they exist then schedule some downtime and power off the VM for the duration of your maintenance window and watch for the merge.
Or, don't bother checking for the merge events and just schedule the downtime and power off the VM and wait.

  • Hyper-v Snapshot compact issue

    Hello All,
I have Hyper-v machine with three snapshot. All the snapshot size around 200GB. The total this Hyper-v machine size 800GB and physical HDD size 1TB. Now i need to delete the hyper-v snapshot and run the compact as because of Hyper-v HDD issue. But i cannot
run the delete snapshot due to Physical HDD size issue. Is their any way to delete snapshot on existing HDD size.
    Please suggest

    Hi ,
    I agree with BrianEh .
Please delete the snapshot directly for merging , hope the following article is helpful :

  • Does SharePoint/Exchange/SQL/AD Support Hyper-V Snapshots?

    Hi,
    Help, please.
Does SharePoint/Exchange/SQL/Active Directory Support Hyper-V Snapshots?
    Thanks in advanced.

    The short answer is NO.
Snapshot/Checkpoint is a point-in-time VM state including its disks, memory, CPU, system state. It does nothing to quiescence the data prior to taking a snapshot. So, SQL/Exchange/AD may not be consistent.
VSS (volume shadow copy) on the other hand does just that.

  • How to recover deleted Hyper-V Snapshot file (.avhd)

    Hi all
I am working on Hyper-V virtual machines with server2003r2 installed in. The host machine is server 2008r2. I had taken the snapshot (.avhd file) of each VM (.vhd file). Now the snapshot file of a VM is deleted manually (even
from recycle bin) without remerging and i want to recover it to get the data back.
Can anyone help me in reovering the deleted snapshot (.avhd) file from the host machine??
    This will be very appreciated.
    Regards
    manibest

    Hi,
I understand your current situation, however, this is a data recovery issue instead of a Hyper-V issue. You can try to use some data recovery tool or
send your hard disk to some professional data recovery company if you do have important data need to be recovered.
Personally, I will recommend that you use Recuva, it’s a free tool. I used it recovered thousands of deleted pictures. You can also wait for other
    community to share about this.

  • Is it possible to edit a MDT Task Sequence after starting a deployment, between Hyper-V snapshots?

Using a Hyper-V VM, I take snapshots of my base image build between major sections (automatic updates, application installation, scripts and extras, etc.) with the intention of being able to go back to that area and look at it for troubleshooting's sake.
Each of these snapshots is manually taken during a pause in my MDT task sequence (using LTISuspend).  I would like to be able to roll back to these snaphots make edits to the task sequence (obviously to sections that haven't yet run), then resume and
see the changes implemented - but I don't know where the task sequence file(s) resides on VM being imaged, or if that can be changed after kicking it off at the very start of the build.
Is it possible to replace the task sequence file (and any other necessary files) that are cached locally on the VM during the imaging process?  Where are those files located?  Or any other way to implement changes to my task sequence so I wouldn't
have to start the image build completely from scratch?
This build takes about 6 hours.  Having to make even the slightest modification causes me to lose an entire day, so this would be golden even if I have to manually edit certain files!

    Hi,
Based on my known, you cannot edit the task sequence after starting the deployment.
However, I suggest you ask this issue in MDT forum for more professional solution:

  • Hyper-v snapshot sizing

im configuring hyper-v server which host 5 virtual machines.total capacity nearly 100tb.if i want to run snapshots how do i calculate capacity for the snapshots
    samj

    Hi,
If you want to perform some tests or install some updates due to the potential issue, you can take a snapshot before the operation. After the tests,
it is recommend that you remove the snapshots because it will affect the performance of the VMs, especially in a production environment.
By the way, snapshot is not a backup method also, if you want to back up the VMs, please use a regular backup tools instead of snapshots.

  • HR - Daily Snapshot Issues with Future Dated Changes

The w_employee_daily_snp_f_1 table has timing issues. The effective end date on all per_all_assignments_f, per_all_people_f, etc always shows the time at midnight. For example: 08/14/2009 12:00:00 AM. When this person has a new assignment, for one day only, the extract does not pick up this person. See example below:
Employee 123 has a supervisor change and the new supervisor is effective on 6/15/2009
Emp Eff Start Date Eff End Date Supervisor
    123 01/01/2009 12:00:00 AM 06/14/2009 12:00:00 AM 888
    123 06/15/2009 12:00:00 AM 12/31/4712 12:00:00 AM 555
When the ETL runs on the night of 6/14/09 at 7:35:42 PM, this record does not get picked up because according to the apps.per_all_assignments_f table on the day of 6/14/09 this person does not have an active assignment. There is one day when the person (according to the system) does not have a supervisor. The next night, on 6/15/09 10:34:18 PM the record reappears and does so every night until the assignment record is again end dated. This only occurs for future dated HR changes.
This is a big problem because if the future dated change is for a supervisor, not only does the supervisor not appear in the daily snapshot, but either does any of his/her subordinates. Has anyone else run into this problem? How did you solve it? Did you customize all the HR mappings?

Have posted an updated version of the MST to my webspace here:
    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/minkus/shockwave/shockwave115606mst2.zip
This new version fixes the following issues (changes to this version in bold):
MsiInstaller repair & errors on first run as non-admin (removes 'AppData' directory entries)
DCOM errors once Shockwave is installed (adds double quotes to the beginnning of LocalServer32 value)
Incorrect TypeLib paths in the registry (fixed to use built-in [SystemFolder] property)
Default CLSID description value missing (set to 'Shockwave ActiveX Control', as per the executable installer)
Incorrect Shockwave 10 paths in the registry (fixed to use built-in [SystemFolder] property)
Misspelt 'OptionalComponets' registry key (renamed to 'OptionalComponents')
Missing .dcr, .dir, .dxr Content Type registry values (included in the executable installer)
Fixed incorrect AppID registry key (set to use installer's [VERSION] variable)
Removed 'Launch SWDNLD.exe' shortcut created in Programs subfolder (people don't want this - see here)
I have tested this on my network and it all seems to work fine. Unfortunately my original plan to use the executable installer didn't work out as it does not include the Shockwave 10 compatibility components described here and here, so it looks like I'll have to keep this MST file up to date with the latest versions until Adobe fix the problems themselves...
If you want to see the changes that I have made, load up Adobe's 11.5.6.606 MSI file in Orca, then use Transform / Apply Transform to apply the MST, and look for the entries in green.
Please post any feedback to this thread, and I will try to respond if I can help!

  • After WS2012-R2 Update, Hyper-V Network Issues

Hey Everyone, Have a really strange issue after upgrading a HP DL385 G7 from WS2012 to R2. After the upgrade Hyper-V VMs ceased to have network activity. I could not get the network adapters in the VMs to do anything. Host OS NIC was ok after resetting IP
Info. 1 Interface for Host, 3 in NIC Team for Hyper-V.
Network Adapters: Two HP NC382i Integrated Dual Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapters
(Main Server: Listed as Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)  ....???
(Backup Server: Listed as HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter)
We also have a backup server, the EXACT same, DL385 G7, that is working (and now currently operating as server with VHDs copied from main server since main is down) that has been running WS2012R2 for a couple months now.
Here's basically how the process has gone so far:
    1. Upgraded to WS2012R2 (all files were left in tact), Windows Updates, then realized NICs weren't working correctly
     a. Checked NIC Team, V-Switch & NIC Settings in VMs...Removed, Re-Add NICs to VMs (with correct VLAN IDs)
     b. Reset IP Info inside VMs, Uninstalled (including hidden/unused) NICs from Device Manager, Re-Add & Config (This is how I got Host OS to work again)
     c. Updated to latest drivers from HP's site
     d. Uninstall Hyper-V role, Re-Install Hyper-V role, Create new VMs, Configure
    2. Fresh Install of WS2012R2, Windows Updates, Configure Server & NICs/Team, Install Hyper-V, Create VMs (same VHDs)
     a. Installed latest HP drivers again, then steps A & B (from above) again
     b. Installed latest "Broadcom" drivers, then steps A & B (from above) again
     c. Tried backing up NIC drivers from backup server and restoring them to main server, but it hasn't worked...
     d. Uninstalled Drivers and right now i'm sitting with Microsoft's default drivers that it has found (Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)
Does anyone have any clues? And possibly a good method to backup the drivers from the server that is working and restoring them to the server that isn't working?

    Hey,
Well the issue is solved. After I had a few days away from it. I went and started looking again and realized something that I forgot to check before........the NIC Team settings on the backup server.... And go figure, the settings were different than how
my boss said we should be setting it up (Mode was set to Switch Independent when apparently it needed to be LACP). Not exactly sure why Switch Independent mode just refused to work at all with hyper-v...but oh well.
So, to everyone else, double check NIC Team settings instead of wasting several hours like I foolishly did.
But thanks again to Udo and Brian for their suggestions.

But i see SESCrawlerExport_Tracing defined in both MergeRules and ResourceDefinition in the conponent HDA file.
So I suspect the aboting issue could be because of this issue
Did any one get this kind of exception ???
Can this is because of my SESCrawlerExport zip file(downloaded) that used for installation???

  • Hyper-V Networking Issue

I have a Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center Computer - The computer works perfectly fine/normal until I install Hyper-V.
Once I install Hyper-V the Windows Store and any of the apps do not detect an internet connection; in desktop mode the internet is working normally and in the Network Connections I can see the virtual network adapters as connected to my wireless network
and I can see a virtual switch that is connected to it. The Windows Phone adapter is stuck on identifying.
The internet works fine in the Windows Phone Emulator despite being stuck on identifying in Network Connections but it does not work inside a Windows 10 virtual machine even though I am using the same virtual adapter as my computer, in Windows 10 the adapter
shows as identifying, If I try troubleshooting it cannot find any problems, I cannot ping to anything except 127.0.0.1.
I have tried every type of Windows Store troubleshooting you could possibly imagine, from wsreset.exe to running the AppsDiagnostic.diagcab file.
The only reason I am posting here is because of the VM for Windows 10 didn't work I thought I'd try removing and re-adding Hyper-V; I realised that once I had removed Hyper-V the Windows Store started working again.
After reinstalling Hyper-V I fiddled around with the virtual adapters such as ticking every box but this did not make a difference.
I have also tried deleting the virtual adapters from Network Connections but the Windows Store still did not work. I have then tried re-adding the virtual adapters but still the Windows Store/apps and VM don't detect an internet connection.
I have tried searching online for a solution for this problem but I cannot seem to find a way to troubleshoot this I do not know what the connection between Hyper-V and the Windows Store/apps could be to cause this fault. I think this must be some kind of
networking issue but I don't know where else I can look besides Network and Sharing Center.
I have also tried updating the networking adapter on my computer but it does not find any updates.
I would like to just not use Hyper-V and use a different program but Visual Studio 2013 Professional tells me that I need Hyper-V installed for the Windows Phone Emulator to work, so I need to find a way to fix this problem.
I hope that I have been descriptive enough for someone to know what the issue is, hopefully it is something really simple.
    Pepsi-Josh

    This resolved my problem
This issue might occur if the network connection services and the connection hierarchy permissions are not set appropriately.
I would suggest you to change the network connection type to private and check if it fixes the issue. Follow the methods listed below:
    Method 1:
Follow the steps below to change the connection type to private network and check if it resolves the issue:
Press Windows+C keys and click on Settings.
Right click or press and hold on your network connection and click/tap on Turn sharing on or off.
Select the option “Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices: For home and work networks”.
If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
Sign-out and sign-in again to the user account. Verify the results. If the issue still persists, proceed to the next method.
    Method 2:
Let’s check if the network service are running and there is proper permission given to the network hierarchy. Follow the steps given below:
    Step 1:
To check for the network services:
Press Windows+R keys and type “services.msc”. Hit Enter.
Locate Network Location Awareness service and right click on it. Choose Properties.
Set Startup type to Automatic and service status to Start. Go to Dependencies tab on the same window and take a note of the services listed.
Click on Apply and then go to Service.msc window. Locate all the dependency service and ensure that they are running in Automatic mode.
Follow the same steps for Network List Service and ensure that it’s dependent services are running as well.
    Proceed to step 2.
    Step 2:
Follow the steps listed below to set appropriate permission for Network List hierarchy under Registry:
Note: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps
carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, you can refer to the following steps to back the registry
    files on the computer:
Press Windows and R keys to open the run box.
Type ‘regedit’ and press Enter from the keyboard.
Open the file option on the menu bar.
Click on Export and save the file with a name on the desktop.
If you want to restore the file, you can do so by double clicking the file that you have saved on the desktop.
Press Windows+R keys and type “regedit”. Hit Enter.
    Navigate to the following location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList
Right Click on NetworkList and choose Permission. Ensure that Full permission is allowed for the users other than that of the administrator.
Now, click on “Advanced” option. Check the box that says “replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object”.
Click on Apply and then on OK. Click on OK again.
    Close regedit window.
Re-check the status of the service (as suggested in step 1).
Restart the computer if needed. Check if it resolves the issue.

  • Hyper-V snapshots sometimes comes without mounted ISO

    Hello, all.
We are running an automated tests with Microsoft Test Manager and SCVMM virtual environments. Recently we started to mount ISO images with file collections on VMs (we used to copy them to VMs from a network share, but it was too slow and caused timeouts and
    network share access problems).
ISO images is being mounted via WMI Hyper-V Provider. The images are located in host's local folders (C:\ISO), which are also network shares being synced with "primary" share with DFS.
The problem is: sometimes (I'd say in 1 case from 100) a virtual machine doesn't "see" mounted drive like it's ejected. But Hyper-V Manager shows correct "image file" in the VM's settings. Changing it to "None" and back to the
same image file fixes the problem.
Is it a bug in Hyper-V? We even inserted an additional check: after calling WMI we also run dir D:\ to ensure the image is mounted. And it's there. And then it doesn't...
Any suggestions other than re-mount an image every time it's needed :-) ?

  • Snapshot issue

    Hi all,
I am quite new to oracle an I have a problem. I am trying to import a database wich I exported from our production DB to our test DB.
So I have from production schema X. Also on my DB I have schema X with exactly the same. But I want to add this db to a different schema.
    I did this:
    imp db_new/db_new@adora file=dv_new.dmp fromuser=X touser=db_new (already created the user)
All work ok, until I get to materialized view, where I get this:
IMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists:
"CREATE SNAPSHOT LOG ON "X"."FACT_ACCT" WITH ROWID INCLUDING NEW VAL" .....
So why happens this? Above should be:
"CREATE SNAPSHOT LOG ON "db_new"."FACT_ACCT" WITH ROWID INCLUDING NEW VAL"...
Until here, all tables are created in the schema db_new.
I hope that you understood my problem.
    Thank you very much!

    imp db_new/db_new@adora file=dv_new.dmp fromuser=X touser=db_new (already created the user)
IMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists:
"CREATE SNAPSHOT LOG ON "X"."FACT_ACCT" WITH ROWID INCLUDING NEW VAL" .....
So why happens this? Above should be:
"CREATE SNAPSHOT LOG ON "db_new"."FACT_ACCT" WITH ROWID INCLUDING NEW VAL"...I agree with Robert that it looks like a bug. You are telling it what new user to use and it is using the old user in the create statement. If you have a metalink, uh, that's My Oracle Support now, account go there and see if this is a recognized bug. My Oracle Support is a subscription ($$$) site that provides detailed techinal information about the Oracle database.

  • Hyper-V snapshot for package management?

    Greetings,
I have created a Hyper-V Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 PC to use for installing Flexera AdminStudio. The idea is to use this VM to create msi packages. AdminStudio will monitor the install of an application and then create a package based on the system
changes. It is suggested to create a VM to do this so you can always revert back to a fresh image after the package has been created.
I am interested in how to revert back a VM in Hyper-V? I see that there is something called Checkpoint. Will Checkpoint allow me to always revert my VM back to a specific point? (IE after the package has been completed)
    Cheers,

    Yes.
A checkpoint is a moment in time that you can return to.
For instance: build your VM os and patch it up.  Take a checkpoint.  Name this checkpoint 'clean os'.  Do all kinds of stupid stuff.  Get rid of the stupid stuff by select the Checkpoint 'clean os' and apply it.
At this point the system tosses away all of your 'stupid stuff' and puts you right back to the state of 'clean os'.
    Now, you can repeat.
If you delete a checkpoint that means that you don't want to return to that point in time any longer.  Under the hood all of your stupid stuff would be merged in and committed for life.  There would be no turning back.
Yes, think of checkpoints as a timeline.

It would have been interesting to see whats the tRFC seted up auto in BIOS.You can use AMD Overdrive to look for that value ,switch to Advanced Mode ,Performance Control ,Memory tab ->  Row Refresh Cycle Time .
Anyway you can buy some cheap Kingmax modules ,they might work just fine even if they are not sold as pairs.
Here value tRFC using  AMD Overdrive running at 800MHz,
Row Refresh Cycle Time 0 = 127.5 ns
Row Refresh Cycle Time 2 = 75 ns

    Your CPU only supports DDR2-800!!
There is NO guarantee it will ever do 1066 with DDR2.
Sorry this is overclocking so I move it to the proper section of the forum.
I think site you provide is old review and give false report about Types of Memory Supported because at official AMD site say that,
    Quote
AMD Athlon™ II Processor Model Numbers and Comparisons
Type of Memory Supported - X2 - Support for unregistered DIMMs up to PC2-8500
                                             (DDR2-1066MHz) -AND- PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066MHz)
    http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/athlon-ii-x2/Pages/AMD-athlon-ii-x2-processor-model-numbers-feature-comparison.aspx
Or you would say that AMD site giving false product information?
