Hyper-V snapshots sometimes comes without mounted ISO

Hello, all.
We are running an automated tests with Microsoft Test Manager and SCVMM virtual environments. Recently we started to mount ISO images with file collections on VMs (we used to copy them to VMs from a network share, but it was too slow and caused timeouts and
network share access problems).
ISO images is being mounted via WMI Hyper-V Provider. The images are located in host's local folders (C:\ISO), which are also network shares being synced with "primary" share with DFS.
The problem is: sometimes (I'd say in 1 case from 100) a virtual machine doesn't "see" mounted drive like it's ejected. But Hyper-V Manager shows correct "image file" in the VM's settings. Changing it to "None" and back to the
same image file fixes the problem.
Is it a bug in Hyper-V? We even inserted an additional check: after calling WMI we also run dir D:\ to ensure the image is mounted. And it's there. And then it doesn't...
Any suggestions other than re-mount an image every time it's needed :-) ?

  • Can I mount .iso images directly into my file system ?

    Hello,
    I would like to install new Solaris releases as they are released, but I would rather not burn a set of 5 CDs for every new release just to update my system.
    I heard there is an 'upgrade install' in the Solaris installer, that will try to preserve my existing system, while installing a new Solaris release. Is it working ?
    I would like to download the .iso images, mount them during install, and use them like this to upgrade my system. Is it possible ?
    Thank you,
    Timothy Madden

    Oh, I meant I have looked on the man pages and on docs.sun.com and I found both tools as you said. But I did not upgraded already, that's going to take a while.
    First I need to make more room and I am still waiting answers on some other topic I started about physical disc slices.
    Live Upgrade looks like a lot of work, there are many search results about it and I would simply go for mounting .iso images after booting the miniroot with GRUB and then starting the installer. I am not 100% sure I can start the installer without booting with a real CD-ROM, but I think it should work.

  • Hyper V Snapshot Issue

    Hello All,
    I had one Hyper-V VM in that i took 5-6 snapshot's (Weekly). Due to this my physical HDD space is increased. So, i have deleted 2 snapshots and deleted some .avhd's.
    After this process i have logged into the VM and found one drive was missing. Did checked the snapshot settings->IDE Controller-> Inspect-> "The differencing chain is broken." I lost all the files, but i have rebuilt the server from backup
    data's.
    Now i have 3 snapshots and one running vm, suppose if i delete the snapshot's it will merge to parent disk ?
    Also please find below, in my 1st snapshot(12/14/2013) i have 3 .vhd's , in my 2nd snapshot (4/17/2014) i have 3 .avhd's , in my 3rd snapshot (4/18/2014) i have 2 .avhd's and in my running vm i have 3 .avhd's.

    Hyper-V 6.1 = 2008 R2 (if I recall my versions properly)
    When a snapshot is taken all virtual disks attached to the VM end up with a new AVHD attached to them.
    You should only manually merge in a panic, no other way, situation.
    The problem that you now have is, you manually deleted a snapshot disk instead of allowing Hyper-V to manage it for you (by shutting down the VM).
    Thus you describe another snapshot disk that is now an orphan, because you deleted its parent.
    You have not answered if you have powered off the VM to allow Hyper-V to perform the merge that it can.
    You have not stated if there is a backup where you can recover the deleted AVHD.
    If you have deleted all snapshots from the VM - power it off an let Hyper-V merge what it can and recover space.  There will be events in the event logs that identify the missing AVHD and corresponding failures.
    You can manually merge -

    Read the entire article, all comments too.
    Please be aware, that you have lost data.  How that impacts your VM is unknown, what change has been lost is unknown.

  • In browser editing: Can my client add new images with hyper-links to their websites without having to replace images already there?

    My client would like to be able to add new images to their site themselves and use them as hyper-links to external sites without having to replace an old image with the new one (or blank place holding images - far from ideal). Is there ANY way that this is possible? They do not wish to update and add new images/links regularly and it is certanly not intended to be used as a blog or way of being able to constantly keep content new and fresh otherwise I would set them up with a blog account and add that to the site. It is merely a way of adding links to other local businesses every once in a while.
    Please see the page they wish to update... Friends. (Please excuse the layout... the customer will not be able to resize or edit the images themselves and wishes to add them as-is!)
    Thanks in advance for any help. If anybody knows how I can ask an Adobe official mod, that would be great... that, or make a request for a future addition in an update?
    Warm regards,
    Ben Gathercole

    Hi Andria,
    Changing links is currently not possible with in-browser editing.

  • Does SharePoint/Exchange/SQL/AD Support Hyper-V Snapshots?

    Hi,
    Help, please.
    Does SharePoint/Exchange/SQL/Active Directory Support Hyper-V Snapshots?
    Thanks in advanced.

    The short answer is NO.
    Snapshot/Checkpoint is a point-in-time VM state including its disks, memory, CPU, system state. It does nothing to quiescence the data prior to taking a snapshot. So, SQL/Exchange/AD may not be consistent.
    VSS (volume shadow copy) on the other hand does just that.
    See this post for more details.

  • Boot from FireWire External Drive WITHOUT mounting internal Hard Drive

    Is it possible too boot a PowerBook G4 over FireWire (this part works) WITHOUT mounting the internal hard drive at boot time - i.e. never mount the internal hard drive when booting from FireWire?
    There is an Oreilly article at http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/h/341 which discusses using "niutil" but it is not clear how to indicate the internal hard drive should not be mounted.
    The boot from FireWire works fine but how do you tell Mac OS X to ignore and never mount the internal hard drive? There used to be an /etc/fstab file where you could specify drives to mount. The /etc/fstab.hd file comments now say "IGNORE THIS FILE.
    This file does nothing, contains no useful data, and might go away in
    future releases. Do not depend on this file or its contents."
    Thanks,

    That is not the problem - I have been using the startup manager by holding down the option key during boot-up. I am having no problem getting the PowerBook to boot from the FireWire Drive.
    *The Problem* is that after the PowerBook has booted from the exernal FireWire drive, I still see the internal hard drive of the PowerBook on the desktop. I do not want this. Some key points to note:
    [1] I can unmount the interal hard drive and remove from the desktop only by using the Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder. There is a button there to "unmount selected volume"
    [2] The finder does not have an icon next to the internal hard drive icon to allow the internal hard drive to be unmounted when booted from a FireWire drive
    [3] I want the MacOS X kernel to be configured to not automount any hard drive volumes at bootup - this used to be possible by editing the /etc/fstab.hd file but that file does not appear to be used any more per the commennts in the file.
    **Remaining Question** How do you configure the MacOS X kernel to prevent it from mounting any other hard drive at boot time? I do not want to use methods [1] or [2]
    Thanks

  • Mac OSX 10.6.8 Garage Band '11. This error happens occasionally : I am forced to power-off-on.  Pop-up states that error info will be sent to apple. I never hear back from apple. Second prob: Fan sometimes comes on, runs high speed, then slowly stops.

    Garage Band '11: pop-up error forces me to power off-on. Message states that info will be sent to Apple.
    I never hear back from anyone about this.
    Second prob: Fan sometimes comes on, runs high speed, then slowly runs down and stops running.

    First thing to do is a SMC Reset, you can find instructions at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!!
    Then try Repairing Disk Permissions, do this at least 2x. You will find this in Disk Utility which is located in Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility.
    Finally you may need to uninstall Garage Band and reinstall. You may have to use Pacifist to do this, you can find it at:

  • In CVI !!!! How to dynamic change BaudRate of RS232 Serial COM Without closing the Port !!!

    Dear all:
    I want to change the buadrate of serial com without closing the serial com, but it failed when I use the function "SetCommConfig(m_hCom, &Com_cfg, Com_cfg_S) " to reset the buadrate ,baudrate is no change when use GetCommConfig to read back the value.
    Appreciated all of your advice . TKS!
    Code with WINAPI as beloow:
    CreateFile(..) ;
    GetCommState(..);
    dcb.BaudRate= 1000000 ;
    SetCommState(..);
    //......do other things
    //change baudrate to normal without closing port .
    GetCommConfig(m_hCom, &Com_cfg, &Com_cfg_S);
    Com_cfg.wVersion = 0X100;
    Com_cfg.dwProviderSubType = 1;
    Com_cfg.dcb.BaudRate =9600  ;
    Com_cfg.dcb.StopBits =1 ;
    SetCommConfig(m_hCom, &Com_cfg, Com_cfg_S);
    GetCommConfig(m_hCom, &Com_cfg, &Com_cfg_S);
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    This topic has been discussed some years ago: see here. Please note that even if I made that sample program which changes the baud rate without closing the port, I never used it in a real situation: you'll need to made your tests and check if this solution can satisfy your needs in the short and long term.

  • Reading an SMB Share Without Mounting

    I'm sure hte answer to this must be incredibly simple, but when I Google, almost every link is about mounting SMB shares.
    I want to be able to read an SMB share on another system from the command line WITHOUT mounting the share.
    For example, in Windows, I can type "dir \\servername\directory" and get a listing of the files on an SMB mount without having to mount it.
    Can I do anything like that from the command line in OS X?  (I tried variations, like "ls //servername/directory" and did not get anything that worked.)

    There's no support for the Microsoft \\ syntax within the various tools of the command line environment.
    You're using a CIFS/SMB/Samba remote access path and particularly attempting to use a feature and syntax that is specific to Microsoft Windows (that \\ stuff) and its MS-DOS command mode.
    It's probably easier (and likely best) to use Filezilla or another similar tool to remotely access the share via ftp or sftp transport or another path when the GUI is required, or to use the command-level tools scp or sftp (which can be configured for a no-password login), or to use ftp (wildly insecure, and largely incompatible with firewalls), or to simply mount (or automount) the share.
    Alternatively and if the other system involved here is remote and you're being blocked by a gateway firewall, then you might look to use a VPN into the remote network gateway or (less desirably) a VPN that's been port-forwarded into the remote server.  That can allow the volume to be mounted, and also avoids exposing CIFS/SMB/Samba to the Internet.
    The most direct command-line analog to what you're trying here is the smbclient command-line tool.  For details and features and limitations of that, issue the smbclient --help command, or see the available Samba smbclient documentation.  Though it can do what you want, I"d still look to use scp or sftp (directly at the command line, or via a GUI client) or a VPN here.

  • Hard Drive In 2nd Internal Bay Sometimes won't mount

    I recently installed a second internal drive in my computer. My main problem is sometimes the drive won't mount. If I turn off the computer for a while it will finally mount but that's not good enough. One day it may not mount at all. What I want to know is; does anybody else have this problem and if so, how did you fix it?
    Or better yet, is there a command I can use in Terminal to mount the drive?
    G5 Dual 2.5 GHz; 4.5 Gig Ram; Logic Pro 7.1.1   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2nd internal 160 gig hard drive installed

    Barry, make sure all of your connections are seated properly. I had this same problem with a SP 1.8 PowerMac, and the problem was that the cable was not seated well which disrupts the signals from getting to the drive. This caused the drive to mount sometimes, and not mount others. Check connections at the drive and motherboard.

  • Mount iso image

    Hi,
    I wonder how to mount iso image on arch. mount -o loop image.iso /mnt/loop works perfect on slack, but not on arch. i tried  mount -o loop=image.iso /mnt/loop, but it asks /mnt/loop to be on fstab. I entered /dev/loop/0           /mnt/loop iso9660   ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0 line on fstab, but there error "ioctl: LOOP_SET_FD: Inappropriate ioctl for device".

    # mount -o loop MapleSoft Maple 9.01.iso /mnt/loop
    mount: Not a directory
    # mount -o loop=MapleSoft Maple 9.01.iso /mnt/loop
    mount: can't find /mnt/loop in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
    After adding "/dev/loop/0           /mnt/loop iso9660   ro,user,noauto       0      0" to fstab:
    # mount -o loop=MapleSoft Maple 9.01.iso /mnt/loop
    ioctl: LOOP_SET_FD: Inappropriate ioctl for device
    It is very strange because mount -o loop MapleSoft Maple 9.01.iso /mnt/loop always worked perfect on other distros...

  • Self-service users can mount iso but cannot unmount

    I have 3 tenant groups that can mount iso files to vms located in their clouds (via App Controller 2012 SP1) from a library share but cannot unmount them.  Actions granted to them are:  Deploy, Deploy (from template only), local administrator,
    remote connection, shut down, start, and stop.
    The library share was originally shared on the server to everyone as read, adminstrators as full control.

    Ok this is not a great solution IMHO.  I believe this functionality needs to be split out.
    The solution for me was granting Deploy (from template), local admin, remote connection, remove, shut down, start, and stop.  Deploy allows mounting of the iso and remove allows unmounting.  Remove also allows vms to be deleted if they are off!!!
    I can see the thinking here...self-service tenants with the capability to deploy new vms should also be able to remove them (within their tenant group and fabric space).  However, one size does NOT fit all.  These functions need to be split out for
    additional fine grain control.
    ex:  I would love to allow certain application personnel to mount ISOs but NOT to delete vms.
