Hyper-V | Windows 7 VM

I'm attempting to build a Windows7 Ultimate 64-bit VM within one of my Hyper-V hosts to add to my cluster. My result when attempting to start the VM is a black screen stating "Starting Windows" and goes no farther. I have several 2012R2 VM's running
without issue within these hosts on my cluster.
Steps taken:
1 - Verified my .ISO file is valid and not corrupted.
2 - Tried a verified second .ISO image
3 - Made sure of my RAM and HDD settings.
4 - The VM will hit the ISO and act like its going to load successfully but hangs on "Starting Windows."
5 - Deleted VM and started over (numerous times.)
One thing that I have noticed that is different on this WIndows7 VM is under the Firmware settings as it's set to "No boot entries." where my other vm's a set to boot from a file.
I have a limited knowledge base on Hyper-V and leaning to my fellow IT colleagues for professional advice. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you. What can you suggest?

Resolved -
Even though the recommended method is the "secure boot" it's not the way to go if you want your VM's to actually boot and run. When I UN-check that feature, and start the vm the install progresses as normal.

  • Installing Hyper-v Windows Server 2008 R2 on to Windows 8.1 Pro

I downloaded a 180 day trial hyper-v Windows 2008 R2 version to my Windows 8.1 Pro system.  I have 16 GB of Ram, and my system is an i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40Ghz.  Hyper-v manager is running, and I can click action, new virtual machine, and I can
give it a name.  I have chosen to install the virtual machine on my D: drive.  It is an empty 400GB basic partition, except the swap file is located here (system managed).  I used Generation1 for the virtual machine, and gave it a startup memory
of 2000MB, which was suggested on another website.  On configuring the network connection, I left it as Not Connected - plan to change later.  On connecting the virtual hard disk, I was not certain what to do between the 3 selections.  Default,
Create a virtual hard disk, Use an existing virtual hard disk, or Attach a virtual hard disk later.  I chose the default, "Create a virtual hard disk" because it is a new virtual machine.  On Installation Options, I tried the "Install
an operating system from a bootable  CD/DVD-ROM.  The 180 day trial was copied to this CD.  When starting the virtual machine, I received boot failed message, so I deleted the virtual machine in Hyper-v manager and associated folders on D.
I don't know what to do next?  Should I try to import a virtual machine from a configuration file somehow?

You cannot install Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8.1  (it sounds like that is what you are trying to do).

You can install Server 2008 R2 in a VM.  Attaching the ISO to the VM and booting should work just fine - or download an evaluation VHD and then attach the evaluation VHD to your VM and boot.

  • Problem Intalling hyper-v Windows 2012 R2 on a Windows 8.1 Pro machine

    First Try:
I am trying to install hyper-v Windows server 2012 from the Microsoft site below on to a Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V Manager.
The Windows 2012 R2 ISO I downloaded from the link at the bottom of the screen.
I am downloading and copying this ISO to CD.  In hyper-v manager, right pane, I am clicking New, Virtual Machine, Next, Name (2012 R2), check the box “Store the virtual machine in a different location (F:\Windows 2012 R2), which is
a partition that will used for all my hyper-v OSs.  Click Next, select Generation 2, Next, Startup memory 512 with box checked “Use Dynamic Memory for this virtual machine, Next, Configure Network connection (chose my virtual switch I setup
in Virtual Switch Manager, Next.  For Connect Hard Disk, I chose “Create virtual hard disk, and went with the defaults. Clicked Next, and in Installation Options, I chose “Install an operating system from a bootable image file (media Image
file (iso) – browsed to my DVD device and chose the saved iso), and then clicked Finish button.
The virtual machine “2012 R2” appeared in the off state.  I double clicked it to open the virtual machine, and clicked the start button.
Received Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    PXE Network using IPv4 ……..
    PXE-E18: Server response Timeout.
    Boot Failed.  EFI Network
    Boot Failed.  EFI SCSI Device.
    No Operating System was Loaded.
Press a key to retry the boot sequence…..

    Second Try:
I did the same process but changed select Generation 2 to Generation 1, and browsed to the ISO saved on my HDD rather than from a CD.
This time the Windows 2012 installed, but came up with a blue screen with the time showing in big numbers, and the words “Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in.
When I clicked Ctrl-Alt-Del:  the PC screen cleared and showed selections (Lock, Switch User, Sign Out, Task Manager).
I tried to switch user to my Microsoft Account, but it only redisplayed the previous blue screen with time ect…

You mount the ISO file directly to the VM, stored on the local disk.
If you mount the ISO and boot into a VM you should not get a logon prompt - you should get the ISO boot prompt to install and if you fail to respond the VHD is booted.
I am suspecting you have a  corrupt download of the ISO.

You are using Hyper-V server and not Hyper-V on Windows Sever.
Hyper-V server is free, but it only includes the Hypervisor and no GUI (Only for managing Hyper-V)
what's your physical machine OS ?
If it's Windows 8 or 8.1 then you can enable the Hyper-V management tools (Programs and features, Turn On/off Windows Features, Hyper-V, Hyper-V management tools). Then open the Hyper-V console and connect to your Hyper-V server.

    Hi
    thanks to you both
but when we install windows server as host there is not our windows in the
Internet\Network and sharing center\ ....... and in the file explorer > network
I found it when I add server host in server manager in guest server and manage it as host server user and then share files and folders from computer management and then create a shortcut from the share folder to desktop
and the did same for guest ... add guest server in server manager in the host server and manage it as guest server user and then share it's files and folders from the computer management and create a shortcut of share folder to desktop
if host windows be a client windows so this is so easy because after we install hyper-v win-server and go to file explorer > network > so we able to see both windows and all files and folders there but if host windows be a win-server we can't see them
    in file explorer > network
    thanks you both again

  • The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual hard disk sharing. (Hyper-v / Windows 10 Enterprise Tech. Preview)

I am attempting to create new virtual machines in Hyper-V on Windows 10 Enterprise Tech. Preview and I am continually getting the error "The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual hard disk sharing.". I am not trying
to setup a shared VM or VHD, just a basic VHD.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

This issue is listed in the release notes and currently there is no fix on our side. Have to wait for the next build.
    "Known issues in Build 10049
If you have Virtual Machines hosted on your PC running Windows 10, you will want to move to the Slow ring and wait for the next build as this build breaks the ability to run VMs. "
The statement is miss-quoted. It was about Hyper -V. An update KB3053898
    was released to fix that
    See the blog
    Here :
excerpt........notice the statement has been crossed off in the blog.

  • Installed windows 10 hyper-v windows will not start

I went into the control panel on Windows 10 and enabled Hyper-V,  Now the machine will not boot.  Any ideas?

    1. Which build you have installed ? 10041 or 10049.
    2. If it is 10049.................
Hyper-V won't work if you try to install Hyper-V
    AFTER 10049 was installed.
Hyper-V will continue to work if you already have Hyper-V
    BEFORE 10049 was installed.

    A workaround:
If you were on 10041 before, revert back to 10041. Install Hyper-V , then upgrade back to 10049.

I cant do anything theres no no active network adapters found and my wairless is fin and now is there anyyyyy why to go back to windows 10 please
    Hi,
So the network connection is fine or broken? Could you please describe the issue in more details? Do you have an issue in Windows server 2008r2 or Windows 10 Technical Preview? Any Problems with Hyper-V?
"now is there anyyyyy why to go back to windows 10 please"
Do you mean that you want to restore back to previous OS? In preview build 9926, there's a roll back option during startup which can be used to roll back to the previous OS installed.

  • Data Protection Manager 2012 on Hyper-V Windows 2008 R2 and NAS connectivity

Hi, we currently use Symantec Backup Exec 2010/2012 on Windows 2008 R2 servers storing the data on two LAN-connected NAS servers. As part of our MS licensing package, we have obtained System Center 2012. I'm seeing if DPM can replace our BE software, but
I'm running into a major hurdle, I can't connect (Add) either of the NAS machines. I see on DPM posts where you need to have a physical connection to the NAS (iSCSi or fiber channel) not an option on the NAS (Thecus N8800 & N8900 (no ability to add cards)
and SMB 3.0 (appears to be a Windows 2012-only option ... I dread 2012 and don't want to move to it right now). Can my virtualized (hyper-v) W2008 R2 server see a non-connected NAS and if so, how do I pull this off.
    Thanks

    Hi
DPM needs local storage to connect to. you cannot use a NAS or USB device to backup to like with other backup software.

  • Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1. Hyper-V Windows 2012 R2 Preview

    Hello,
I am new to Hyper-V. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2  Preview on a physical server and installed Hyper-V role on it.
I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V as a guest OS.
From Hyper-V manager, I created a VM and supplied 2008 R2 ISO as a boot device.
Windows 2008 R2 ISO is bootable. I have used the same ISO on VMware and it works.
I connected the VM and powered on, but OS instalaltion doesn't start.
I get error " Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1." Below is th screen capture.
How to fix this problem ?
How do I go to Hyper-v VM BIOS settings ?
How do I change the boot sequence for Hyper-V VM ?
    Thanks ! Jayawardhane

I was getting the same error but with WINDOWS 2012 STD Edition.
My case: I was trying to use the existing WINDOWS 2012 VHDX with Generation 2 Virtual Machine, as I wanted to make use of 'Virtual Hard Disk Sharing' feature which is only supported on SCSI Controller. But during boot, it looked for UEFI code, whereas
I had created VHDX using BIOS boot partition. So I guess, In order to use 'VHD Sharing' feature, I have to convert boot partition to GPT which supports UEFI.
If I use the Generation 1 virtual machine, and then change the VHDX Controller from IDE to SCSI from settings, I see the option 'VHD Sharing' getting enabled, but unfortunately the Generation 1 BIOS does not have support for SCSI only IDE.

The Configuring Windows feature fails at 98% and "Failure configuring windows update "

  • Hyper-V Windows 2012 r2 Poor network performance

    Hi,
Since that I installed Windows 2012 R2 and Hyper-v, I notice that is very slow performing copy operations from the VMs to the physical machine (appears to be lock to 10MB). Firs I though that this issue was only between the VMs and the parent OS, now I realized
that when copying between this Hyper-v physical host and another physical host in the same subnet I also get only 10MB of speed.
How do I unlock this 10MB limit??
The switch and all NICs are GIGABIT capable and before using Windows 2012 r2, using the same hardware boxes I was doing 400MB of transfers between physical hosts and VMs??!!
    Thank you.

I had the exact same issue with the same AR8151 NIC on my Alienware, only I'm running Windows 8.1.
I have a VM with both an external (to the AR8151) and an internal NIC which serves as both a domain controller and router (RRAS) for my other VMs (which only have Internal interfaces).  There is no VMQ setting on the adapter, and I messed around with
the offload/RSS settings, but performance would drop whenever this VM would be running.  (Internet speed test would go from 95Mbps downstream to about 24Mbps.).  When I paused or shut down the VM, performance would return to normal.
I found the issue to be an errant entry in my route table which I have no idea how it happened.  A second default route was created which used the internal IP of the VM with a lower metric.  Simply deleting the route corrected the performance issue.

  • Error creating VM on Hyper-V Windows server 2012 R2 (0x80070569).

I recently installed in my domain a member server 2012 r2 with Hyper-V Role, and got the following error when creating a new vm:
Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.(0x80070569).
The user is momber of Domain Admins group and is logged on the server. I noted that the domain admins group has not the right "log on as a batch Job". Is this right required to create vm ? What are the others requirements to install and admin virtual
    machines in Hyper-V?

    Hi Claudio,
"As Microsoft recommended 'best practice' for Hyper-V servers is to not install any additional Roles or Features that do not specifically support virtualization. As an example, in a Hyper-V Cluster, the Hyper-V Role and the Failover Clustering feature are
installed to support highly available virtualized workloads. Hyper-V hosts play a critical role in an organizations' virtualization strategy. Microsoft recommends that the Hyper-V servers be managed in a separate OU in Active Directory (if they are domain-joined).
Only group policies that apply specifically to Hyper-V host machines should be applied to this OU. This minimizes the risk of a policy conflict affecting the proper functioning in a Hyper-V host. "

  • Hyper-V Windows local backup reports offline state

    Hi
Why is my hyper v not backing up please? How can I make it backup? Please find the image attached.
    the image attached. Thanks

The VMs show as 0kb because you included their container volume in the backup. From your screenshot, I presume that's volume D:. If you want to see if they were backed up, go through the Recover wizard until you find the available selections. If you can
choose the "Hyper-V" option, and then on the next page choose an individual VM, then it was backed up.
Offline means it was off when the backup was taken.
It's mostly a trivia piece these days, but since it was brought up: Any time a file is changed, the OS turns on the Archive bit. A full backup backs up every file and clears any archive bits. An incremental backup backs up all files that have the Archive
bit set and clears the archive bit. A differential backup backs up all files with the Archive bit set but leaves it set.

  • Configure Virtual Switch - hyper V - Windows Server 2012R2

On my laptop i have windows server 2012 R2 data center edition installed connected to Wifi. I was able to install and configure to VM's on it. However i am little lost on how to configure the virtual switch for these two VM's. Below are the details:
    IP Address : 192.168.1.155
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: (Blank)
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
I do not have any ethernet port, i only have wifi. I did create a virtual switch linked to the NIC (Wifi), and same virtual switch is used by the two VM's. I want few things out of this:
    i) I should be able to RDC into both the VM's from other computer when on the same network.
ii) I also want the host and two VM's to be accessible from outside the network.
I need to know what IP addresses should i assign to the virtual switch and each of the VM's. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Sqlunlimitedgeek,
The two VMs will need IP addresses on the same range as the host.
Essentially, the switch is like a normal switch and anything connected to it should be able to access each other and the switch itself wont need an IP address.
Just make sure the vSwitch has been configured as an external switch and the "allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is checked. This will create a vEthernet that can be configured on the host with the relevant
IP address and save you exporting out your own via powershell.
The clients all need to be on the same subnet as does the hosts vEthernet.
If your using a team and want to carve that up then powershell is the best way. Especially if configuring a cluster and using a single NIC or Team to created a converged network. In this instance, this doesn't appear necessary as your just using a single WIFI
    adapter.
To RDP, just makes sure that is enabled in both VM guests as per normal.
    Kind Regards
