Hyperion Planning Classic vs. BPMA 9.3

Hi,
We are on Hyperion Planning 9.3 (including all latest patches). We are in the process of building a new Planning application. Currently we donot have an ETL tool and it doesnt seem we will get one for the next few months until our new Planning application is deployed into production. So in a nutshell we wont have an ETL to solve the below problem.
I have used Planning Classic along with an ETL tool to build my meta-data in past implementations, and havent had a chance to use BPMA. Lately I have started getting aquinted with BPMA and understand some of its advantages. However, I still have a few specific questions;
1. I know Planning Classic allows manual creation of members, does BPMA allow the same? Or does BPMA have to have flat file or interface table to create or add members? Our business users would be manually creating some members, or for instance change the start or end month of a 'Scenario'. So, does BPMA allow manual editing and pushing of meta-data?
2. If an application is created via BPMA, they would have to interface via BPMA and not Planning Classic anymore. Is that true?
3. I understand it is possible to convert a Planning Classic application into BPMA but "NOT" vice versa. Is this true?
4. Finally, a more difficult question, a more specific question which kinda of dictates the choice for us.
My client would like individual departments do their respective budgeting (noting unusual there). However, most of these departments budget per 'Project' and more specifically like to budget based on 'Project Name' (which are unique and not generic) as opposed to 'Project Numbers' (there isnt a Project number standardization as such yet). The challenge is getting the 'Project Names' into Hyperion Planning (sadly it doesnt exist in ERP/GL yet because these are new projects).
So, though the Finance Team ultimately approves each department's budget, they would like each department be able to create their respective 'Project Names' in Hyperion Planning. And Planning capabilities like supporting detail, etc wouldnt work as they would like variance based on 'Project Names' and be able to slice-n-dice based on 'Project Names'.
Now if we had an ETL tool the above would have been simple, I would have just created an automation to say pick-up a file with 'Project Names' from a pre-determined folder location. However, because we donot have an ETL, I was wondering if BPMA could do the same, i.e., automatically pick-up a file from a folder and create members and refresh Hyperion Planning? Could the 'Batch Processing' in BPMA handle this?

First of all I wouldn't recommend using EPMA until version 11, 9.3.1 was riddled with issues.
To try and answer some of your questions
1. You can manually maintain members in EPMA if you choose to do so, you need to push it down to planning/essbase if you do make changes.
2. If the planning app is in EPMA mode then you can't edit/add/delete member information through the classic route, you can view. You still can design forms, task lists etc through planning web.
3. It is possible but no you are not meant to.
Sounds like you could do with ODI it would make your life easier, are you sure you are not licensed to use it, you may be entitled to use it.

    EPMA. We are already using Calculation Manager, but not Dimension and Application Library. Currently, we have DRM installed and we bring all Metadata
    from DRM into Oracle tables. We are using ODI to load data/Metadata from Oracle tables to Hyperion Planning / Essbase. I heard that Hyperion Planning Classic may go way in near future. I'm not aware of any ODI KM for EPMA but I know that EPMA has improved a lot recently. Any advice or comments on either way will be great appreciated.

    It is definitely not going away, if you take 11.1.2.3 there was lots of new functionality introduced for classic and not so much for EPMA, if you look at Oracle's cloud solution it is classic only as it runs on Linux and no windows which EPMA still requires.
    If you are already using DRM and ODI ask yourself what benefit you will get from EPMA, if you feel you will gain from EPMA then try it out, it is long old debate classic vs EPMA which everybody has there owns views on so there is no definite right or wrong but I know from experience which one I prefer

    We are trying to update metadata into classic planning application using outlineload utility, but we are facing error as given below::

    Nested Excetpion: java.sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: ORA-00942: table or view doe

    Please suggest a way to solve this issue.

    Looks like its sequence issue. Can you check if HSP_ACTION_ID_SEQ sequence is available for this planning application.

  • Planning Classic Admin not available in EPM 11.1.1.3

    Hello everybody,
    I had on my laptop System 9.3 (Shared Services, Essbase).
    I recently moved to EPM version 11.1.1.3, that is:
    - upgrade for Shared Services, Essbase;
    - new install for Workspace, Planning.
    My Operating System: Windows XP -Service Pack 2
    Planning is creating me some issues. The install went OK and I had no problems with System Configurator.
    After configuring Planning I reconfigured Hyperion Foundation -> Workspace -> Configure Web Server.
    EPM System Diagnostic shows everything ok.
    I can connect to planning using http://server:8300/HyperionPlanning/ but I don't have any applications so I can't log in.
    The only menus I can see are Exit and Help.
    Workspace doesn't help me either.
    I don't understand how to create a new datasource and a new application. In workspace there is no link (as I was used to in version 9.3) to Classic Planning Administration.
    The only menus I see in workspace are : Workspace Pages, Explore, Administer, Impact Manager.
    I am using the default 'admin' user.
    I checked in Shared Services and I have the Create Planning Application and Dimension Editor roles.
    I don't know what else to try. Any help will be extremely appreciated.

    Thanks for the answer. I just tried this way and created the first application.
    What I would like to understand is if it is normal - in 11.1.1.3 - not to see from Workspace the Planning Classic Admin and the list of planning applications.
    My users have to connect to Planning from workspace.
    Should I also install Performance Management Architect ? I wonder, are the two in any way connected ... ?

  • Planning classical application Migration from version 9.3.1 to 11.1.1.3.

    Hyperion Version 11.1.1.3
    Database: SQL Server 2005
    Windows Server 2003 R2
    Old Version
    Hyperion Version 9.3.1
    Database: SQL Server 2000
    Windows Server 2000 R2
    1.I have created classical planning applicationin(CPLAN) in the 11.1.1.3 which similar to 9.31 application, interms of application name, database names and dimensions.
    2.I took backup of CPLAN of 11, and CPLAN of 931.
    3.stopped planning, Essbase , RMI Registry, Shared services.
    4.Restored the 931 CPLAN Backup( of SQLServer 2000) into 11113 CPLAN(SQL Server 2005)
    5.HSP_OBJECT table - in this table object id  column and objectname column is password, Here tried with both old password hypadmin and new password admin.
    6.HSP_USERS table - USER _ID =50001 and SID= (I given 11 version details)
    7. HSP_SYSTEMCFG Table- I tried with changing the VERSION from 9 to 11 and cleared the verion - tried with both the ways
    and EIE_SERVER changed- this is shared service path with port number and server name changed.
    I mean http://mycurrent server:28080/interop.
    8. Above These3 Tables columns changed and started the services all planning etc.
    9. tried to open planning web, i got the application CPLAN name, once enter the username and password and CPLAN , its giving error. the error message , error while processing this current page, check the log for details. I got this error message.
    10. I checked the logs, Access.log, and Hyperion Planning.log these two logs verified i didnot find any error.
    --please help meon this who has done this kind of migration. ASAP.

  • Tracking load on Hyperion Planning

    We need to come up with a management level report showing the usage of Hyperion Planning in the company.<BR><BR>We need metrics like :<BR>Peak number of users<BR>Average number of users (polling every 30 minutes)<BR><BR>Is there anything within Hyperion Planning for this.     Have you ever valued the Evaluation Order?
    I'll bet you haven't. Assuming that the dimension in question is Accounts, move that dimesion to be first in Evaluation Order.
    You can find Evaluation Order in the classic administrator dimension editor. It's the third tab on the right. Dimensions, Performance Settings, Evaluation Order.

    So far I have done the following 3 steps:
    1. I have successfully installed and configured Hyperion Planning 11.1.2.2 in a new Server. (Windows Server 2008 R2).
    2. I have created a blank classic Planning Application in 11.1.2.2.
    3. I have copied the relational database from 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.2
    Could you please let me know the next steps to perform the upgrade?
    Should I use the Migrate Button in the Hyperion Planning Webpage or use the option in the EPM System Configurator "Upgrade existing database to the current release from 11.1.1.3". Please advise.
    Note : A native User is the owner of the Planning Application in 11.1.1.3 and hence I made the same in 11.1.2.2 also.
    Also, please let me know if I need to migrate the shared services security and convert the HBRs to Calc Manger rules first before upgrading the Planning Application.

    Yes, I have performed a clean install and then going for upgrading the existing Planning Application.
    The Application owner in both the source and target Applications is a native user named hypadmin (not the default admin user). Do you want me to change the owner to default admin user, or the user hypadmin is ok to go with?
    Please advise.
    Also, is there any specific order I need to follow for migrating the below components?
    1. Shared Services Security
    2. HBRs to Calc Manger Rules
    3. Existing Planning Application Upgrade

    1. What dimension building techniques available for Hyperion Planning 11 other than DRM, FDM and manual techniques?
    2. I have read in a blog that Outline load Utility doesnot work with Hyperion 11x for dimesion building and "Hyperion Dimesion Library " is available in its place. Is it true ?
        But we are using Outline load utility for loading exchange rates in our 11 version application.
    3. I have worked on ODI 10g and 11g with Hyperion 9x
       Is Hyperion planning 11x compatible in building dimensions using ODI from scratch and also adding members to existing hierarchy as per changing business?

    outlineload utility is for classic applications only for loading metadata.

  • Hyperion Planning Fusion Edition, what components are required?

    Hello,
    Currently we're planning to install Hyperion Planning Fusion Edition, but we're not certain what components are required if we want to use Planning with EPMA/BPMA. Can someone post a list of components/applications required?
    Additionally, where from can we download Oracle Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management Architect, Fusion Edition, v11.1.1.1.1? The documentation states that such a version exists, however we're unable to locate it on Oracle's web pages.

    I configured classic planning; I can access Application directly from Planning URL but when i open workspace and
    Navigate>administer>Classic Planning administration>Planning administration
    I get error:

  • Create Filter in Hyperion Planning

    I have created a Data Form using Classic Hyperion Planning Application. I want to have few cells in this data form having Read only access while others have Write access. How can I do this?
    For ex: I have 10 users, some of them will have write access to some of the "Accounts" and "Period(Q1, Q2)" Dimension members while they will have read access to all the other members.
    I have externalised my Essbase Server to Shared Services. I don't know how to assign filters to users using User Management Console.

    I cant find the Assign Access option in my Accounts or Time Period dimension which were created by default.
    Is there any way to enable the security for the built-in dimension?
    Open Question:
    While i was trying RahulS's suggestion i came across an error which i cant resolve myself. Requesting you to help me out in this regard........when i try to open the data form i come across this message "Unable to obtain a connection to Hyperion Essbase. If this problem persists, please contact your administrator".
    I checked the hspsys_properties table in the database and the info are correct but when i try to query the table it says "The table or view does not exist"
    When i check the Essbase log it says "Database Plan1 does not exist" though i have changed the name of the Plan1 database.
    Please help....I am badly stuck.

  • Error WHile creating a User in Hyperion Planning

    Please someone guide since im facing this problem for a longtime.
    I created a user in Planning webpage and refreshed the security filters.
    When i tried to login using planning webinterface, it showed an error "User priscila_monsanto does not exist in the domain or the password is incorrect"
    And i could able to find an exception in the file"Hyperion Planning-err.log" present in Jrun path of the planning server.
    And when i logged into the admin console for the plannng cube, i found user anme in the security-->users field and there is no filters assigned to the user.
    Please help me.

    This is definitely a Custom Adapter because OOTB Adapter name is adpADCSADDUSERTOGROUP and NOT adpADDUSERTOADGROUP
    So, it is your custom code and in the code you are passing incorrect value of the Active Directory Child process form...
    The correct name is UD_ADUSRC and the Group Name column name is UD_ADUSRC_GROUPNAME.
    While you are passing UD_AD_CHILD as the child process form and UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME as Group Name column name..
    Use OOTB Adapter... Correct these discrepancies... Your addition of group will work
    And since you are creating custom adapter, you need to be more careful and remain consistent throughout..
    Then if you want to use UD_AD_CHILD_GRP_NAME, use it everywhere consistently... Pass only this value in the adapter...
    And even in lookups, if any... Search everywhere... Keep things consistent... They will work... Because good news is that you are able to create user in AD via Java Code...
    And if any post is even slightly helpful, it is a good habit to mark it with helpful or correct ... And also mark the entire question as answered so that other people also are benefited.

    Here there are 2 things, once your epma heirarchy is ready did you deploy it against your planning App ? and incase if you haven't deployed your planning application, then old outline would be existing in Essbase and if you load data for old outline it will still take into but when you deploy the database gets restructured and older data gets restructured/removed.
    Before going onto that level first check if your load data to essbase completed successfully. and did you load data for the combinations on dataform ? ? Try manually inputting a number through data form and submit and do a refresh to see if value comes up. ? Check your data form settings , if you have enables suppress missing rows/blocks.
