Hyperlink to a file on a public drive for shared users?

It is common for us to email files (mostly Excel, Work, and PDF documents) back and forth between users on our home network.  Our setup is one iMac that has a public folder that two macbook pros add, remove, and edit files on.  Rather than emailing the document and saving another copy, is there a way to hyperlink to the file on the drive and just send a link?
Thank you

Pages doesn't support hyperlinks to local files. If you can make your server appear to have a URL address, your problem is solved.
Send Feedback to Apple from the Pages menu and tell them that you would like to be able to link to local files.

  • Hi, I'm an eBay seller and save old eBay auction files to my hard drive for future refence. Firefox no longer opens these files correctly (see below).

Hi, I'm an eBay seller and save old eBay auction files to my hard drive for future refence. These files which all use the same name but are saved in a different folder for each eBay auction no longer open correctly -- much of the eBay auction text information shows up for a split second and then disappears -- the area at the top of the saved eBay auction file then collapses -- the original eBay auction photo of the product shows up as well during that split second but disappears when the other auction text disappears. These eBay auction files open correctly when opened using Internet Explorer. In Firefox, Firefox adds some strange information at the end of the file name when it is opened which is not a part of the actual file name itself (i.e. here is the original file name which is the same for whatever ended eBay auction I open: eBayISAPI.dll.htm -- here is the altered file name after Firefox opens it: eBayISAPI.dll_files/eBayISAPI_data/eBayISAPI_002.htm#ht_658wt_1349 -- yes, it is that long -- the last part is slightly different for each separate auction file that I open). None of this happened until recently. The files open this way whether using Firefox 4.0, Firefox 3.6.16, Firefox Safe Mode 3.6.16, and Firefox Safe Mode 4.0.

    Here is what I did:
    1) In Firefox 4.0, I opened the Bookmarks on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. I clicked on the Import and Backup menu. I then exported all my bookmarks to the PC's desktop using the default file name BOOKMARKS.HTML.
    2) In Firefox, I opened the Add-ons menu under Tools on the Menu Bar. I clicked on the Prnt Scrn key on the top right of the PC's keyboard in order to obtain a screen shot of all the Firefox add-ons. I then opened Microsoft Word and pasted the screen shot using the Control V command (Ctrl V). I then saved the Microsoft Word file on the PC's desktop for future reference.
    3) I then opened the Control Panel in the Start menu (accessed from the little Windows world globe on the bottom left of the screen -- the operating system is Windows 7).
    4) In the Control Panel, I opened Uninstall A Program in the Programs section.
    5) I uninstalled Firefox 4.0 clicking on the box "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" in order to remove whatever bug in my Firefox customizations was causing the two errors above (this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART of this whole process which is why I saved all my bookmarks as an HTML file and saved a screen shot of all the Firefox add-ons).
    6) I then reinstalled my old Firefox 3.6.16 version obtained from the following link: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html (I am not yet in favor of using Firefox 4.0 -- you suppose you can reinstall Firefox 4.0 on your system if you want).
    7) After Firefox 3.6.16 was reinstalled, I had to import all my old bookmarks. Under Bookmarks on the Firefox Menu Bar at the top of the screen, I clicked on Organize Bookmarks. I then clicked on the Import and Backup menu and then the Import HTML command in order the BOOKMARKS.HTML file saved on the PC's desktop.
    8) I then re-added all my favorite Firefox add-ons by clicking on Add-ons under the Firefox Tools menu and then clicking on the Get Add-ons command. I then searched for all the old add-ons I wanted to re-add to Firefox using the Microsoft Word document on the PC's desktop saved with the screen shot of all the old Firefox add-ons on my system by I uninstalled Firefox 4.0.
    9) I then opened one of the old eBay auction page files saved on my hard drive under the eBay default file name "eBayISAPI.dll.htm". The file opened perfectly with NO missing sections and no missing original eBay auction listing photo! the file looked exactly like it did as if I was logged into eBay and looking at the original ended auction.
    10) I then opened Hotmail in Firefox and received NO "update your browser" message! I was able to open all my old emails and write and send new emails (with all my Contacts being automatically detected when I went to type in the email address of the person I was sending the new email to)!
In summary, you need to uninstall Firefox 4.0 being sure to click on the "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" box during the uninstall process. Be sure to save/export all your old bookmarks before the uninstall process and make a note of all your old add-ons. Then reinstall whatever version of Firefox you are comfortable with. Apparently, my Firefox customizations had become corrupted at some point; removing the Firefox customizations during the uninstall process allowed any future Firefox version installed on my PC to start over with a clean slate (these corrupted settings would show up in whatever version of Firefox I had installed on my PC so removing them during the uninstall process was the key to solving all my Firefox bugs). I hope my suggestions help to solve your problem and good luck!

  • Error.  Cannot install public key for specified user

I'm getting "Error. Cannot install public key for specified user" when trying to add a public ssh key for a service processor user on a V20z. I've tried it for different users and still get the error. The same operation works fine on a V40z. Any help would be appreciated.

That would be great if the resolution was that simple.  I am using a public key I generated using the putty key generator.  Below is the key I would use if I got that far.  However I get an error on the "ssh authentication publickey" attribute so I never get the chance to enter a public key.  What code version and hardware version are you running that this worked on?

  • HT3728 do i have to do separate backup to hard drive for each user?

Do i have to do separate backup to hard drive for each user?

Sorry, I am not understanding what you are trying to say.
Time Machine is software on your Mac that allows it to back up to another hard drive.
A Time Capsule is an Apple wireless router with a built in hard drive that can be used to store Time Machine backups from one or more Mac computers.

  • List mapped drives for all users

Is there a way to list all mapped drives for every user  in the domain? I'd like to export it out to csv.

    Hi Ctrl,
We can use "net use" or Wmi query "Get-WmiObject Win32_MappedLogicalDisk " in powershell, however,  these methods has some limitations, whether the current user which is used to remote access has Administrative privileges
to their computer can determine whether that returns anything or not.
For example, we can use Powershell Remoting to query the mapped drive from remote computers, beacause the mapped drive is to a specified user, so we also need to provide the computername and the relevant credential.
If you deployed the GPP Drive maps, you can refer to this script:
Get all GPP Drive maps in a Domain
If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.

  • Can not copy files to another hard drive for backup

    30May07
    Apple Support:
I need to copy files from my home to an external hard drive because I need to do a complete re-install, and erase the laptop's hard drive.
When I try to either move the home folder the icon is a house, I get an question stating that some of my files do not have permssions, do I want to continue anyway (Yes, I do!)
A bit into the move, I get this message (dealing with permissions):
    Can not copy 1528.emix . Error code -36 .
I have no such file or any .emix files either. I was able to copy to whole hard disk, not just the home to the same external drive two weeks ago.
How can I copy my HOME to my external drive so I can reinstall the OS?
    Thank you for your help

    07Jun07
I believe the problem was my computer's internal drive. It corrupted several files. I had a very hard time copying the files. The -36 error stopped any transfer cold.
I did a complete install of the OS.
I need a way to determine what files are corrupt so I can delete them. It took 24 hours to constantly keep trying to copy the files to the external drive. I ended up deleting a lot of un-corrupt files. How can I determine which ones are bad so I don't delete good data?
Thank you for your help. I am also grateful to the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ.
You are having a hardware problem - there's a problem
on one of the drives in this story.
This can be caused by extra hardware connected to the
computer, so if you have anything extra connected to
the computer (external iSight, iPod, USB hub,
    anything) disconnect it.
If that doesn't help, try reformatting the external
    drive and try again.
If that doesn't help, just rescue what you can,
because the next step is that you're going to be
    reformatting the internal drive.

  • Transferring hard drive files to external hard drive for backup  have old tiger osx 10.4

how do I copy and transfer hard drive to external hard drive for backup of everything?

You can clone the entire drive to the external, provided you have more space available on the external drive than the total of your used filespace on the main drive.
Carbon Copy Cloner will perform the clone for you.

  • Using an "iTunes Server" on a NAS drive for several users

Like many others I'm trying to make a single drive containing my iTunes media serve different iTunes users round the house.
Will the following work? Comments welcomed.
Currently my iTunes Media Folder and media live on my main PC. About 130Gb in total.
I'd like to get a NAS drive that has "iTunes Server" functionality and put this NAS drive on our home network. Then I'd like to move my iTunes media folder location into the 'iTunes Server' folder on the NAS drive. I'd also like to transfer all the data files associated with iTunes to the NAS drive. I believe with iTunes 10 that shouldn't be a problem and that I can contunue to use iTunes on my main PC as I ever did....it's just the media and data files will now all reside on the networked NAS.
Now I'd like to point all the iTunes on the other PCs in the house to the networked iTunes Media folder and the networked data files. Then presumably they will boot up and be able to access everything just like my main PC.
I understand that if more than one PC tries to edit the data files and iTunes media folder then corruption will inevitably result. I wondered if this could be prevented by using access rights management to all the networked iTunes files so that only my main PC can actually edit anything, add music, etc.
That way I hoped that I may manage the library successfully, create playlists as required and have all the other PC users enjoy my work but without screwing it up!
Maybe an iTunes data file can't be read by two instances of iTunes at the same time? Perhaps a second PC reading the data files can cause a corruption, if my main PC happens to be editing those files at the same time?
In essence I want all iTunes related files on the NAS drive. I want all PCs(with iTunes) in the house to have full read-only access to the music, playlists etc. However I would like my main PC to remain as the sole machine that administers the iTunes library and related files.
Looking forward to any help. Like others I've spent many hours trying to ascertain the best way to share a single iTunes media store around the house.
I know I could leave my main PC on and have the other PCs get at the content that way. However the power consumption of my desktop setup is not insignifcant and we will have a NAS drive running 24/7 anyway for other duties.
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Cheers
    Geoff

I now realise that if what I propose will work then "iTunes server" is not required on the NAS. However if the iTunes Media Folder was placed in the "iTunes Server" on the NAS then other media players like the ROKU could access the files?

  • File permissions, inherit for shared user directory

im trying to create a public share where users can read each others files, but not write to them.  thats no problem, but im also trying to create a public directory as well, where the users can create a folder inside another users directory.
    for example
a new group is created called localnet(name is reflecting a workgroup tied to windows computers), two users (user1 and user2) are assigned part of this group, so that only the group 'localnet' can cross access each others shares inside the /public folder only.
a directory is created to reflect the new group, the two users dirs are added, and also a public dir is added
    mkdir /usr/share/localnet
    mkdir /usr/share/localnet/user1
    mkdir /usr/share/localnet/user2
    mkdir /usr/share/localnet/public
now to set the permissions, the users dir is chowned to themselves, and the public dir is chowned to root, all of which are attached to the localnet group
    /usr/share/localnet/user1 user1:localnet drwxr-x---- (chmod 750)
    /usr/share/localnet/user2 user2:localnet drwxr-x---- (chmod 750)
    /usr/share/localnet/public root:localnet drwxrwx---(chmod 770)
all is fine, but when user1 creates a dir in public, say for example /public/pictures it now inherits a different set of permissions outside of the boundaries of this setup, it inherited (drwxr-wr-w user1:users ), this looks familiar, its the way linux adreses users files. So now user 2 tries to place pictures inside to say /public/pictures/roll1 but this user is denied permissions because user1 owns the dir.  the permissions i need it to inherit is what i set in the parent, and that is (drwxrwx--- anyuser:localnet)
what im trying to figure out, is what command can i run to allow the sub directories of the /public to inherit its permissions i guess is what im trying to accomplish
EDIT: another though, should i be doing this inside the "home" directory instead? (/home/public)  makes more sense to me, would it act any differently there?
Last edited by wolfdogg (2011-12-06 10:35:12)

    i ran
    chmod -R g+w,g-t,o+t /usr/share/localnet/public
    the directory /usr/share/localnet/public/random_by_user1 now reads
    drwxrwsr-t user1:localnet
(user2 was able to make a dir inside of this one)
although that worked, and user2 is now able to make a directory inside of a directory that user1 has made, its not inheriting like this. so even though the recursive set them correctly, the new ones are coming up liek this
    drwxr-sr-x user1:localnet
(user2 was NOT able to make a dir inside of this one obviously)
    without this elevated permission set.
so we have it right when i chmod the files, but how do i get them to inherit this natively? thats a sticky right?  how to i make the 'rws' in group sticky, but no delete permission for a non owner?  i think thats the question that shoudl have been stated int eh beginning of the post now that im figuring this out.
Edit: (i just realized something, my poor choice for an example might lead you to believe that the users personal directories are inside the /public, they are actually not, so in my examples such as the one above where i reference a new test directory like this " /usr/share/localnet/public/user1" let me rephrase that so as not to confuse " /usr/share/localnet/public/random_by_user1"
the user directories are actually outside of the public eg.. /usr/share/localnet/someuser, where the public shares are inside  /usr/share/localnet/public.  im sure i made that clear, but at this point, confusion might lead to chaos. lol.
also, i dont want everyone else to have permission, only owner and group, so no need to o+t correct?  remember, its only public for the group, not for everyone.

  • How to unlock internal Hard drive for other user

i have fast user switching set, and i can log on to that user's desktop.  however, when i try to start iTunes, i get a message that says the hard disk is locked.  So iTunes won't open.  I had set a whole bunch of songs for this user, but now can't seem to open itunes.  It's a power PC (not intel), and software is all up to date (it was after the last upgrade that this may have happened.
BTW, onthe get info pop up, i unlocked the drive and set the priveledges for the HD  to read and write, but still get the locked HD message when opeing iTunes.
    Any suggestions?

Well i appreciate your help.  Two followups to report.
    1.  i just made a new account and imported the old itunes music. This worked, so i deleted the old account.
    2.  now for the bad news.  When i tried to restart the computer, it just freezes after lighting up the screen.  then after about 3 min, the fan starts blowing full steam.  Sounds bad based on past experience.   So i'm off to the genius bar tonite and hope the HD and backup HD are still OK.
    Thanks again.

  • Mapping Network Drive for external user does not work

I want to map a beehiveonline.oracle.com network drive. I am using https://beehiveonline.oracle.com/content/dav/# as mentioned in the FAQ.
Using https://beehiveonline.oracle.com/content/dav/ (without the #) does not work either.
I am able to map this network drive when using [email protected] as user.
However when trying to do this for the user [email protected] I am not able to map the drive.
I am testing this in order to simulate the client to map the network drive.
Logging on the beehiveonline with the user id [email protected] works fine.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Ah, We have had one other case of this where an account can access BeehiveOnline OK but cannot get the webDAV to work.
I did notice a few login failuers stating your account did not exist on the system. This can sometimes happen if there is a conflict between username and loginid - I have set them to be the same and this may help.
Try again and let me know how it goes.
