Hyperlinks in pdf don't work

Hi.
I create pdfs with hyperlinks in adobe indesign 5.5.
The created Hyperlinks refer to other pdf documents and still work,
but if I open the same pdf Files with another computer,
the links don't work.
I don't know why hyperlinks don't work on the other computer.
Any ideas?
Both Acrobat Versions have the ability to use and open linked documents.
It seems to be a general problem from acrobat.
Thanks!

If you create a link in Acrobat to another PDF file in the same folder or in a subfolder of the source PDF's location, the link destination will always specify only the filename (and optional subfolder), not the absolute path. Provided those two files/folders are moved together, the link will always work.
EG:
"Index.pdf" in folder  "C:\Writing\Novels\MyBook"
"chapter.pdf" in "C:\Writing\Novels\MyBook\Chapters"
Linking from "index.pdf" to "chapter.pdf", the filespec attribute of the link will be "Chapters/chapter.pdf".
Copying the entire "MyBook" or "Novels" folder and subfolders to another computer, CD, etc. the link will work as normal.

  • Hyperlinks to PDF files only work in Preview

I cannot get any of my hyperlinks to PDF files to work in my
ouput WebHelp file. The links work fine in Preview, but not in the
actual output. And the files have been added to the baggage folder,
and can be seen in the Baggage folder. Any help would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Hi Retso
Sorry for not replying earlier. I've been conducting a
    RoboHelp HTML class all day.
Are you using RoboHelp HTML 6? If so, there is a new option
labeled "Mark of the web" that could be nailing you. When you
generate your WebHelp by double-clicking the layout, see if this
option is enabled. If so, disable it and your PDF links should
begin working. Note, however, that by DE-selecting this option, you
could start seeing the Yellow Information bar as Internet Explorer
ever so helpfully deems this as a security threat and blocks your
WebHelp until you click it and allow the content to be shown.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Hyperlinks to pdf files not working when project is exported out as SWF and uploaded to server

    hI all
I'm using CS5 and i have hyperlinks to pdf files in my indesign project. However when i export to SWF, although the links work locally, they do not work when i upload all the relevant folders and files and test it from a server the links to the pdfs can not be found, the error messages indicates its looking for the files on my hard drive. I have also noticed that if i copy all the relevant folders and files and exported swf to a different directory and then launch swf from there the links do not work there either.
Other than seperately uploading each pdf indvidually on to the server and then creating a hyperlink to it from the local indesign project i don't know what else to do.
    Any advice much appreciated.

I have your same problem, but didn't consider uploading the PDFs and then linking to them. I'm willing to try it. Let me know if you ever found a better way, ok?
    Thanks.

  • I am having problems getting my hyperlinks to PDF files to work

It seems that since this recent update, the links to my PDF files don't work. You can only highlight the files but the PDF does not download. Can anyone help me fix this or should I reload iWeb and not update it until they fix it? The website is arlingtonwomensclub.com if anyone wants to try the links.

I do see your problem, and I have a possible solution for you...
Here is the (working) link to your PDF file...
    http://arlingtonwomensclub.com/Town-Wide%20Garage%20Sale_files/Arlington%20Women %25d5s%20Club%20Garage%20Sale.pdf
And here is the (non-working) hyperlink that is on your page...
    http://arlingtonwomensclub.com/Town-Wide%20Garage%20Sale_files/Arlington%20Women %E2%80%99s%20Club%20Garage%20Sale.pdf
And this is the name of your PDF file...
    "Arlington Women's Club Garage Sale.pdf"
The problem here is that the name of your PDF file includes an apostrophe and it is being coded by iWeb and interpreted by your server in different ways, which is leading to the "File not found" error message when you click on the link.
I would encourage you to simplify your filenames and pagenames and sitenames, because long names with spaces and other special non-alphanumeric characters will get converted into their character codes and may not be interpreted correctly by browsers or other servers.
Change the name of your PDF file, maybe to a simple "application.pdf". Relink it to your text link. Republish and I think you will see an improvement.
Let me know if you have any questions or run into any other roadblocks.

  • Custom URL links in PDF don't work.

I have registered custom xyz: protocol handler in Windows.
Creating a hyperlink in MS Word and clicking it works OK – my handler app gets invoked.
Saving Word document as PDF used to work (somewhat – by passing URL to the default browser).
    Recently it stopped working altogether.
Questions: where should I look for recent changes? In registry? Some configuration / setting in Adobe Reader UI?
And most importantly – can I create a hyperlink  to my custom protocol that will NOT involve the default browser (as Chrome, for example, gets lost)?

    Here is what I do.
    1. Register txt: protocol with Windows to open Notepad.exe, with this txt.reg file:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\txt]
    @="URL:txt Protocol"
    "URL Protocol"=""
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\txt\shell]
    @="open"
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\txt\shell\open]
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\txt\shell\open\command]
    @="\"C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe\" \"%1\""
    2. Create MS Word document with two hyperlinks:
    yahoo – linked to http://www.yahoo.com/
    txt – linked to txt://test
    3. “Save as…” this document as PDF, default options.
After that, open saved PDF in Adobe Reader, click on each link.
Clicking “yahoo” opens your default browser and navigates to yahoo.com.
Clicking “txt” has no visible effect.
Expected: open Notebook.exe and attempt to open specified file.
Note: that txt link works OK if clicked in the Word.
Also, the custom links used to work in the past in Adobe Reader as well.
I am looking for two things:
    1. What could I change in the process of saving PDF or in Adobe settings to make this work again?
    2. Is there a way to specify hyperlink in PDF to a custom protocol handler and NOT have it go through the default browser?
    Thank you,
    Vlad

  • Hyperlinks within .pdf documents not working IMac Safari

I am working with a website that displays several .pdf documents. The documents contain hyperlinks to urls. Everything works fine in other browsers, but in Safari, these hyperlinks do not work. The cursor does not change when it enters the hyperlink space, and nothing happens if the link is clicked. I am using an IMac running OS 10.6. 8 and Safari 5.1.10. I have tried both the native (Preview) option and a plug-in. Neither makes any difference. Can anyone suggest a fix other than abandoning Safari?

  • When I convert a doc with hyperlinks into a PDF on a Mac links in the PDF don't work

Hey guys, please advise how to make a PDF on a Mac so that hyperlinks from the original file remain active and working in the PDF document? The links which look like a web address (http://www....) are converted correctly and open fine, but when a hyperlink is tied up to some piece of text (e.g., Watch on Youtube - and you can click on this phrase and the video opens) this link in a PDF file does not work, although it does in the original Word/PPT document.
When I make a PDF on a PC everything's fine: I can click on a link in the PDF and the website opens. But when I make the same operation on a Mac the links do not work...

There have been some methods posted by MAC users to address this issue. The MAC does not have the PDF Maker option that is available for the PC and so extra steps are needed. Sorry, but I do not know the process but would just suggest that you search the forum.

  • Hyperlinks in PDF doc stop working when emailed out in Mac Mail. Why?

I have created a Pages document with hyperlinks and then saved it as a PDF.
The PDF document retains the hyperlinks (they still work).
When I attach the PDF to Mail and email it out the hyperlinks stop working unless I double click on the PDF document (which "opens it").
Why? Help please as I want the hyperlinks to work when the email is received - ie. without double clicking on it. Thanks.

First off, Word should show you the version on a splash screen when you launch it.
Also, what happens to the links if you just open the document in Word and save it as a PDF?

  • Links in PDFs don't work on mobile device

A text linked to a page in the same document works fine when clicked on in the PC. But when tapped on in an Android device, the link does not work. Any ideas why this is so, and a workaround?
    Thanks!

If you use the MS add on for saving to PDF you might get the links. I use a PC, but as I understand it the PDF Maker that adds the links does not work on the MAC and never has. One MAC user (Phillip Jones) typically drops by and provides some insight into methods for getting the links, but I don't remember the solution (probably because I did not totally understand the solution as a PC user).

  • Links in PDF don't work on Mac conversion?

I am working with Word 2011 on a Mac.
My document has linked TOC and many internal links and cross references.
When I convert to PDF, NONE of the work, whether I use "Save As PDF," Distiller, or Acrobat XI Pro...
    Is this a known limitation?
    Is there ANY workaround?
Or is Windows my only option to make the links in my PDF work the same as in my Word document?

  • Hyperlinks to pdf file not working

I hope someone will be able to help me. I have been using PDF
converter online for awhile now and on some of my websites. I know
how to use hyperlinks (I am a webdesiger). All of a sudden, my
hyperlinks are not working on any NEW ones I create. I click on the
link on the website and it comes up with Error 404, Page not found.
I am using regular word documents.
The support team keeps instructing me on how to set up
hyperlinks - I know how to do that.
Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Hyperlinks on pictures don't work

I wanted to put some hyperlinks on pictures that would lead to other pages on my site. When I tried clicking the Insert menu and choosing Hyperlink, the choices were greyed out. Then I tried selecting the picture, and I opened the Inspector and checked "Enable as a hyperlink." Clicking on the picture to get to the page works in iWeb, but not when you load the page to the site.
Is it possible to make pictures hyperlinks, or should I just put captions under the pictures and make them hyperlinks?

Your second method is the correct method. Use the page name as the link destination instead of First, Second, etc. Then check "Make hyperlinks active" checkbox and try the link. It should take you to the linked page right in iWeb.
To check the links without publishing to the server just publish to a folder on the Desktop and run the site locally with your browser.

    Hi NVSteve,
Please check to see what your default pdf reader is. You can check this in Tools > Options > applications. Look for the pdf extension and see if it is pdf.js or another pdf reader. If it is pdf.js, please file a bug with an example pdf. They can make changes with an example. The site to file a bug is [http://www.bugzilla.mozilla.org]

  • Endnote Links in My PDF Don't Work Appropriately

I have a PDF with endnotes (at the end of chapters/sections rather than at the end of the document). When I click on the endnote superscripts, I am taken to the very end of the document rather than the correct page at the end of the section.
The links work fine in the Word file the PDF is based on.
    What could be wrong?

Did you have the Adobe PDF printer attached when editing the WORD file? Did you do the conversion with PDF Maker or some other way? You left a bit of information out.
