Hyphen Character missing

I imported a docx and upon editing the para style from Calibri I see that my Times New Roman doesn't have available the Hyphen/Minus character.
Is this just a case of having too old a version of Times New Roman and I need to find something more current? FWIW, my Times font loses the character also, but shows as a pink space wheras the shot shown shows a pink space with a box.

Daniel, are you sure the Times version should be translated into a normal hyphen? The name "Hyphen-minus" comes from the Unicode consortium, but the character code -- U+002D -- is that of what everyone else simply calls 'hyphen': the character that gets inserted when you hit the '-' key, no modifiers.
If you select the pink box, does the Info Panel tell you it should be a code U+002D?
It's far more likely, given the locations in your screen shots, that Word silently (!) converted what the user entered into an en-dash (U+2013) in the Windows character set, not as Unicode. Due to ID's wonky import of certain Word documents, sometimes these characters don't get translated into the proper UC codes, so they are left as "unknowns". That may happen with en- and em-dashes, as well as with single and double curly quotes.
A simple search-and-replace ought to fix that.
Back to my original question, do I need a newer version of Times New Roman?
Peter touched on it, and it's new to me - Case Sensative Hyphen, Unicode 002D - I grabbed the shot as clearly, with as much info as I could. Would this lack of Case Sensative glyphs be Microsofts current fault coding or a limitation of ID to recognize it because as I look back at my shot, the selected character is GID:882 HYPHEN/MINUS not case sensative and probably should be the glyph immediatly to the right  GID:883 Case-Sensative Forms HYPHEN/MINUS

  • PS to PDF generation character missing

    Hi
    We have used 3b2 centralized server, each and every user will access the server and generating the ps files. While doing this ps to pdf generation, some time the character missing. Again we do make the same ps to pdf the text is there.
    Because of this we are facing lot of problems. Could you please look into this matter as a matter of urgency.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Subbu

    If you are having them print a PS file to the server and using Acrobat (or Distiller) for the conversion, you should read the EULA. Acrobat is not licensed for use on a server (including Distiller). For server use you should be looking at the Distiller Server.
    In terms of the problems, they should probably be embedded the fonts in their PS files if the server does not have the fonts they are using.

  • First character missing sometimes when i type

    it doesn't happen all the time but when i type something the first letter is missing iv'e noticed it mainly happening in safari
    any suggestions? thanks

    hmm, mine seems to be fixed
    history: ever since 10.4.3 the first character typed after an idle period doesn't register, tried combo updater, 10.4.4, blah blah, problem got more/less frequent but still hit several times a day
    three days ago by chance i ran disk utility and selected "verify disk", it said i had an "illegal name" and bailed, booting the tiger dvd and running disk utility could not fix it, nor could booting single user und using fsck
    some surfing turned up an issue linked to vietnamese characters in filenames that are installed as part of adobe creative suite 2 (and also in some standalone cs2 apps)
    this causes problems that once present can eventually result in serious damage to the disk structure, disk warrior was cited as being able to detect/fix the damage (apparently several other similar apps will not do it)
    two days ago i got dw, it showed several of the adobe-linked issues as well as a few other (imho minor) things, it fixed the disk
    since then the missing keystroke problem seems to be fixed too
    maybe this is just chance, maybe the zillion reboots did it, maybe starting single user did it, could be anything really
    so i decided to carry out the ultimate test and tempt fate by posting that mine seems ok now
    i'm not suggesting dw fixes the missing keystroke, but if you have any adobe cs2 apps it might be worth seeing if disk utility shows any issues when you choose the "verify disk" option

  • Character missing when embedding font

    I have a movie in wich text is loaded dynamically. I load the
    fonts from an use a swf in wich the font is embedded and import
    that into the main movie. The text is loaded based on language
    choice.
    But now i come to the hungary this one character: "ő"
    doesn't show up.
    So i recreated the font swf to include this character but it
    still doesn't work. This character is still missing. It's driving
    me crazy...
    I found out that it might have to do with the loaded language
    and settings from the OS. But i am not shure what to do exactly.
    Can anyone help me out please...
    YOur help is very much appreciated

    Sorry respondplease , thanks for you response but that was
    not my problem.
    I already had the font embedded and linked. It was just that
    i couldn't get this one character into the flash movie.
    Finally i succeeded by installing support for certain
    languages, and then setting the language of my machine to this
    language and reboot(!)
    Then after the reboot launch flash and publish the font movie
    again. That did the trick. I have the font loaded in a sepperate
    fontfile/movie (swfmovie).
    It has to do with the system only loading the first 250
    characters or so from a font The character i needed was out of this
    range

It's not that big an effort after all. Of course if you're not familiar with character encoding and unicode, I recommend you read this:

  • Simplified Chinese character missing...

    I have a Word doc that I was sent with translations of some text I need for a photoshop file...
    the text displays fine in Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 (on a Macbook Pro 2012 model) but when I copy it into photoshop CC one of the characters is replaced with a box... any way to fix that?

    You have a font selected that does not include that particular glyph.
    Word tends to auto substitute fonts to get all the glyphs, even if it means mixing several fonts -- but Photoshop does not automatically substitute fonts that you did not specify.

  • Automatic hyphens missing in print

    I design a quarterly newsletter using InDesign CS4 6.0.6, output to press quality PDFs. My client informed me that in the last two newsletters, hyphens are missing randomly in some of the stories. Even on the same page, one column has them and the next doesn’t.
    The prepress guy says that indeed they are missing on his internal proof via a production laser printer and of course on his plate maker, but they do appear in the PDF. He paginates by bringing my PDF into ID CS2 and outputs from there (seems convoluted).
    We’ve been doing this newsletter and many other projects without a problem for many years.
    Any idea where to look?
    Thanks.

    I think somebody needs to move into this century. If he can't RIP the PDF you send to him, find out why.

  • Use of hyphen (-) in hostname/machine name

    Hi there.
    One of our architects is proposing a new server naming policy that would allow the use of hyphens (-) in the hostname or machine name of new servers.
    I've pointed out to him that this might not be a very good idea as I've heard of a few problems with Oracle that can be caused by using hyphens in the hostname.
    Do any of you know if underscores (_) are allowed instead? Is Oracle happy with underscores in the hostname?
    Thanks in anticipation !

    Thanks for that Sybrand. I've checked out what you pointed me and it does say that hyphens are allowed.
    However, I've just found a conflicting document on Metalink (sorry, MyOracleSupport) Doc Id 477993.1 whereby it causes problems with Siebel environments. It says the following:-
    "The hyphen (-) or dash characters are not permitted as valid characters within the Siebel server name. The only valid characters that can be used in the Siebel server name are alphanumeric and underscore characters. Configuring a machine hostname that contains a hyphen character can also cause certain behaviors when running the Siebel Server Configuration Wizard"
    So, it's still a bit unclear. I think what I'll do is raise an SR to double-check.
    Many thanks.

  • Problem indexings hyphenized words in PDFs

    Hello everyone on this forum
    In the new site we are building, I am using Oracle Text to implement the search functionality.
    I have problems indexings hyphenized words in PDFs.
    The code I used to create the content table and the Oracle Text index, is like follows
    CREATE TABLE JMMC_TST_OracleText( article_id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY
    , desc VARCHAR2(30)
    , doc BLOB DEFAULT empty_blob()
    COMMIT ;
    I populated the doc column from a database column in our CMS, containing a PDF document. Just for testing, also populated it from a PDF file, using TOAD for Oracle 8.6.
    EXEC CTX_DDL.create_preference( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'BASIC_LEXER' );
    EXEC CTX_DDL.SET_ATTRIBUTE( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'SKIPJOINS', '-' );
    EXEC CTX_DDL.SET_ATTRIBUTE( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'CONTINUATION', '-' );
    CREATE INDEX JMMC_TST_INDEX
    ON JMMC_TST_OracleText( doc )
    INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT
    PARAMETERS ( 'LEXER jmmc_BSJC_lexer2
    STOPLIST CTXSYS.EMPTY_STOPLIST' );
    COMMIT ;
    The following sql
    select ctx_report.describe_index('JMMC_TST_INDEX') from dual ;
    SELECT err_timestamp, err_text
    FROM ctx_user_index_errors
    ORDER BY err_timestamp DESC;
    shows that indexing went without errors, and index was correctly created.
    The word: processo
    (that in the PDF is hyphenized visually as
    ........... pro-
    cesso .....
    ) is indexed as 2 tokens instead of just one token, as the following sql shows
    select token_text
    from dr$JMMC_TST_INDEX$i
    where UPPER(token_text) = UPPER('CESSO')
    or UPPER(token_text) = UPPER('PRO') ;
    The following query returns 1 result
    SELECT SCORE(1), article_id , doc
    FROM JMMC_TST_OracleText
    WHERE CONTAINS( doc, 'pro cesso', 1) > 0 ;
    The following query returns 0 results
    SELECT SCORE(1), article_id , doc
    FROM JMMC_TST_OracleText
    WHERE CONTAINS( doc, 'processo', 1) > 0 ;
    Strange thing is, several months ago I tried this test with the same PDF, and everything went by without any problem.
    The tests were done on different machines, and on both occasions I used Oracle 10.1.0.5.0.
    Looks like I'm overlooking something or maybe some obscure setting (of DB, server or system) is causing the problem.
    Suddenly hyphenized words in PDFs, stopped being indexed correctly.
    Searched in the manuals and in this forum, and could not find a solution. Any help from anyone in this forum ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello everybody on this forum
    As the initiator of this thread, I am glad that after some months, someone else is looking at this issue.
    To add/clear to the confusion, I have followed Roger Ford suggestion.
    Here’s the test I ran
    1) Created a minimal test file (using Windows Notepad) with the following content:
    ABC-
    DEF
    Hex view of above file is:
    41 42 43 2D 0D 0A 44 45 46 00
    A B C - . . D E F .
    2) Created test table
    CREATE TABLE JMMC_TST_OracleText(
    article_id NUMBER PRIMARY KEY
    , fmt VARCHAR2(30)
    , doc BLOB DEFAULT empty_blob()
    The main difference to Roger Ford test case is: my content column is a BLOB instead of a VARCHAR2.
    The reason why my doc column is a BLOB, is because the site I’m building, content come from our CMS, and has different types both text and binary (eg Word, PDFs, etc), that I need to index together.
    So I use a mixed-content column in a materialized view, to prepare/consolidate/hold all contents I index.
    3) I inserted 1 row in above table (using TOAD for Oracle 8.6.), putting my minimal test file in the doc column.
    4) Create Preferences and Index
    EXEC CTX_DDL.create_preference( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'BASIC_LEXER' );
    EXEC CTX_DDL.SET_ATTRIBUTE( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'SKIPJOINS', chr(45) );
    EXEC CTX_DDL.SET_ATTRIBUTE( 'jmmc_BSJC_lexer2', 'CONTINUATION', chr(45) );
    COMMIT;
    CREATE INDEX JMMC_TST_INDEX
    ON JMMC_TST_OracleText( doc )
    INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT
    PARAMETERS ( 'LEXER jmmc_BSJC_lexer2
    FILTER CTXSYS.AUTO_FILTER
    STOPLIST CTXSYS.EMPTY_STOPLIST
    FORMAT COLUMN fmt' );
    COMMIT;
    Note: the basic lexer SKIPJOINS and CONTINUATION characters, were set the same as the hyphen character used in test file.
    5) Tokens indexed:
    select token_text from dr$JMMC_TST_INDEX$i
    Shows:
    ABC
    DEF
    6) Filter indexed content and generate a plaintext version:
    create table JMMC_filtertab (
    query_id number
    , document clob
    commit ;
    begin
    ctx_doc.filter( 'JMMC_TST_INDEX', '1', 'JMMC_filtertab', '11', TRUE);
    end;
    Hex view of plaintext version is:
    41 42 43 2D 20 20 44 45 46 00
    A B C - D E F .
    Note that the original end-of-line chars (0D 0A) were replaced by 2 SPACES.
    It looks like the filter replaces end-of-line chars by SPACES, and feeds the lexer, with something like:
    ABC- DEF (instead of: ABC-DEF) ;
    So the poor lexer, sees 2 tokens and has no clue they originally were only one hyphenised token.
    This is consistent with what Meta Link Note 124624.1 - Intermedia Text & Continuation Character ('-') in PDF says.
    7) Just for comparison the result of Roger Ford test (using a VARCHAR column instead of a BLOB) is:
    Hex view of the filtered plaintext version is:
    61 62 63 2D 0D 0A 64 65 66 00
    a b c - . . d e f .
    So the main difference seems to be different filtering behaviour for BLOB or VARCHAR columns, in dealing with end-of-line chars.
    I have also tried other combinations of INDEX/LEXER preferences (i.e. SKIPJOINS/CONTINUATION/FILTER/NEWLINE,etc), and different file types (WORD,PDF) which means I also tested with “true binary content” and different end-of-line chars.
    No matter what I tried, results were all the same: if I index a BLOB column, I’m not able to index hyphenized lines correctly.
    According to the manuals, the CTXSYS.AUTO_FILTER were supposed to deal correctly with mixed-content columns if given the correct information (ie FORMAT COLUMN)
    Hope this triggers a response from someone.
    Thanks to all the people that took time to look at this problem.

  • Alerts missing characters

    Hi,
    In SharePoint, we have an announcements list with an alert for all the users (when a new item is added).
    Sometimes in the alert (the mail that we receive), there is 1 random character missing.
    The announcements we place contains all alphabetic letters (no symbols or special characters)...
    What could be the cause of this issue?
    Thanks.

    Hi Alexander,
    Based on your description, my understanding is that the characters are missing in the alert emails.
    Was there any customization on the default alert template or did you use custom alert template instead?
    I recommend to check the outgoing email setting for the web application where the announcement list exists to see if the Character set is 65001 (Unicode UTF-8).
    Please go to Central Administration > Application Management > Manage web applications > highlight the corresponding web application and then click General Setting and select Outgoing E-mail.
    To narrow the issue scope, please create a new list and then test the alert to see if the issue still occurs.
    Best regards.
    Thanks

    I’m having a problem exporting a Japanese character in my PDF proof of my book. I’m using this character ( 間 ) in a number of different places and it looks fine in the Blurb book layout tool but it’s missing in the PDF when I export. Not only is the character missing but all of the text that follows it in the text box is gone too. Is there some special type of language pack I need to install for Acrobat to export correctlly?
