Hyphenating words at the right margin of a sentence

How do I stop iBooks Author from automatically breaking words that do not fit at the right margin of a line of text into a hyphenated word with the left part at the end of one line and the right part moved to the front of the next line?
Many words are awkwardly broken up, such as "ges-ture", etc.  Is there a global setting to stop all automatic hyphenations (while keeping the ones I had originally set in my manuscript)?
Thanks for any guidance.

Hello reidjenner,
This can be adjusted in the Document Inspector, as detailed below.
Turn hyphenation on or off
By default, words are automatically hyphenated if they need to break at the end of a line.
Do any of the following:
Turn hyphenation on or off for the entire document: Open the Document inspector, and select or deselect Hyphenate (in the Document pane).
iBooks Author: Correct and hyphenate text automatically

  • I'm using Acrobat Pro 11. When printing an email to PDF most of the time it cuts off the text on the right margin. Setting look OK and I've moved things around on the email, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. Is there an Adobe setting I'm missi

    Like I said above, print to Adobe pdf and it wants to cut off the text on the right margin. I can't see to find a setting that changes this. Any ideas??

    OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
    So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
    Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.

  • Why can't I change the right margin in Pages?

    I am using Pages 5.5.2 under OS Yosemite 10.10.2 on an iMac. I chose "Informal Letter" as the style, because I am trying to write a SIMPLE letter. It says the right margin is set to 0.5 inches, but the program WILL NOT allow the text to go beyond 6.5 inches. I have turned on the ruler and when I click in the paragraphs there is a blue upside down triangle in the upper ruler showing the limit of the text. If I click on that I can move it to the left, but it WILL NOT let me move it to the right. It forces the text to end at 6.5 inches from the left margin leaving a huge blank area on the right side of the page. This is ridiculous! In WORD it is extremely easy to move the right margin to the limits of the printer. Why won't Pages allow me to move the text limit of the line past the 6.5 inch mark?
    HELP!

    Hi Bush,
    what you suggested does not work. I set the right margin to 0 in the Documents settings, but still can only move the blue triangle to the left.
    Yes, I agree that there is a bug in the Informal Letter template.
    Peter wrote:
    Better to create your own template from the Blank template or use one of the other templates.
    A hint that might help you (in templates other than Informal Letter)
    My advice is the same as Peter's. Give up on the Informal Letter template and create your own template from Blank in Template Chooser:
    You will find that Document Margins and Insets on the Ruler actually work!

    Ian.

  • Why won't InDesign break hyphenated words at the hyphen?

    Why does InDesign not break hyphenated words at the hyphen?
    For example: "empty-handed".
    InDesign will break either "empty" or "handed" on either side of the hyphen. But not right at the hyphen, even if "empty" and "handed" are each set to No Break.
    Anyone know why?
    The hypen is typed in normally using the hyphen key on the keyboard.
    If I type a space after the hyphen, InDesign will break there, of course: "empty- handed"
    InDesign will break at an en-space: "empty–handed".
    But I prefer not to have to type a space or insert an en-space or other characters because I also need to export text to ePUB and want only the actual text.
    Correct break (if needed) at end of a line should be:
    . . . empty-
    handed . . .

    There is no reason why InDesign should avoid breaking hyphenated words at the hyphen. That's the preferred break location.
    This must be a bug.
    Evidence:
    When I turn Hyphenation OFF for a paragraph that contains a hyphenated word (such as my example, "empty-handed"), the hyphenated word is correctly broken at the hyphen (if needed at the end of a line). But when I turn hyphenation back ON, the word will not break at the hyphen.
    See the two screenshots below.
    1) Hyphenation is ON. "Empty-handed" is unbrokenat start of Line 3, yet line 2 is very loose, with room to fit "Empty-":
    2) Hyphenation is OFF. "Empty-handed" is broken at the end of line two, at the hyphen (resulting in better word spacing).
    By the way, the other settings in this Hyphenation dialog don't affect this issue. I tried changing them all, with no different result relating to the break at the hyphen.

    The HUD Inspector in Full Screen View seems to position at the right margin of the image as a default(?)  If I toggle the button in the top right of the HUD it 'unlocks' and I can drag it to where I prefer -- at the left margin; (for over a decade) my dock has resided at the right margin so all my slider manipulation over countless editing sessions in Aperture has been ingrained to work at the left margin -- but, the vast majority of the time, the HUD overlaps the image I am editing in this 'unlocked' mode.
    Every occasionally I enter Full Screen View and it positions on the left margin *without* superimposition...(!) My great joy is modulated into aggravation, however, should my tracking cursor drift all the way 'out of bounds' -- to call in the hidden pane of adjacent images sequenced in the library... This dramatically shrinks the Full Screen display and re-locks the HUD; if I toggle the switch to re-xpand the image it re-positions at the right margin!!!!  I SOOoooooo wish I knew how to control the default 'locked' margin of the HUD in Full Screen View...

    Drag it over to the Left. Then lock it there.

  • When I compose an email, I can't see what I'm typing near the right margin. Other browsers have an arrow to click to widen the view. youdon't.

    When I compose an email, the composition window is not wide enough, so as I get near the right margin my cursor suddenly disappears behind the right edge of the window for like 10 characters or so and then it reappears on the Left Margin and I can see it again. So if I type something incorrectly out there on the right where I can't see it, I'm screwed. And there's no mechanism to widen the window. In Explorer, there was an arrow halfway down the window that I could click on to widen the window. So I'm gathering this is a browser/Firefox issue. Please advise.

    Can't you resize that text area when you move the mouse pointer to the bottom right corner?
    Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
    *<b>View > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
    Also make sure to use full page zoom ("View > Zoom Text Only" should not be checked)
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Zoom_text_of_web_pages
    If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" in case the current setting is causing problems.
    *Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
    Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.
    *Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
    It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with overlapping text.

  • Why does my image get clipped at the right margin?

    Using Pages 5.2 and Preview 7.0 with my iMac running OS 10.9.3, my brochure has an image that gets clipped at the right margin using Pages, but not with Preview (when I print a pdf of the same file). I'm using an HP Deskjet 6980 printer.  Both Pages and Preview are set for borderless 8.5 x 11, in landscape orientation, and the "thumbnail" shown in the printer dialog window is correct for both.  Preview does print the full image but ignores the "fast draft" settings and takes forever to print the page.  Pages is fast, but clips the image by about 7/16" at the right margin (trailing side of the printed page).  I need to print about sixty 2-sided sheets, so can't stand the slowness from Preview.  Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    If you had Pages ’09 v4.3 installed prior to Pages v5+, test if the image clipping issue occurs with the earlier Pages application. Export your current Pages v5+ work as Pages ’09 first, and explicitly open that document with the earlier Pages. Double-clicking will use Pages v5+ if both are installed.

  • How can I print comments in the right margin with Ver X?

    First time with this discussion area.  I'm attempting to print messages in the right margin of the page on which they appear.  This was possible in Ver IX.

    I checked my copy of Acrobat 9, and the only way I could find to print comments on the right side of the page was one of the four versions of comment summary.
    You can do the same thing in Acrobat X. On the Comments panel, select the Options menu (circled) and choose Create Comment Summary.
    Then select the 2nd option in the Create Comment Summary dialog:

  • My Oracle Support documents print with text cut off on the right margin

    Just a question to check if more people have this issue. When I try to print a document from the knowledge base on My Oracle Support (MOS) it always prints with a lot of text being cut off on the right margin of the page. I tried this with different workstations, OS'es (XP Pro, W7), browsers (IE6, IE8), printers, etc. but it's always the same result. My only workaround is to copy all text and paste it into a text editor. I've logged a service request for this, but Oracle doesn't really seem to care about it and after pointing me to setting margins in Microsoft Publisher (???) and an article on how to export tables on MOS, they pointed to the HTML version of MOS (which has exactly the same issue by the way) and our local IS department for printing preferences. Apparently they cannot replicate this on their workstations, whereas I can replicate at will on a load of different workstations. I know that it's best not to print on paper and read on the screen, but even printing to a PDF writer will cut off text. Does anyone have the same issue with printing documents from MOS?

  • The boxes in the right margin of the source editor

    I want to know how can I disable the code check that is displayed in the right margin of the source editor (red, brown or green boxes).
    This is really annoying when you are writing bulk code with 10000 lines.

    Don't get me wrong here Frank, I really like it and I think it is very useful.
    But in my case such as checking the 10000-line-code, it is really annoying due to the delay in checking such bulky code.

  • I have an email thread that has become unprintable (and in some cases unreadable) because each email in the thread is indented and eventually the text is very far to the right margin and even beyond.  How do I correct this?

    I have an extremely long and important email thread that has become unprintable (and in some cases unreadable) because each preceding email in the thread is indented and eventually the text is very far to the right margin and even beyond.  Some of the text is even showing up as only 1 letter per line.  I tried selecting all and then left justifying it, thinking that that would shift everything to the left, but it didn't work.   When I go to print the thread, it shows as 344 pages, which although long, I can't believe it's that long.  What do you think happened to cause this and can it be corrected?

    Ick. So it can't just work sensibly? Sensible would be either autosave overwrites previously autosaved versions or all autosaved versions would be deleted when the message is finally sent. Allowing previous message versions to accumulate endlessly might be beneficial to someone, but does not seem like sensible default behavior.

  • How to align/flush completely to the right margin or text frame?

    Is this possible? I'm trying to align the Standing Head to the edge of the frame.

    Is the colored background simply the color of your text frame? If so, no, you cannot move text out at the right hand side (on the left side, inserting a thin space before the first character and using a negative kern value works -- but not on the right side). Optical Margin Alignment does something, but it appears to move the right-aligned text to the left instead ...
    If you want to be able to apply a paragraph style and forget about it, you will have to separate the background color and the text frame itself. Then you can make the text frame just a bit wider, and set the right margin of the "regular" text to that same bit.
    You can also put the header into a separate frame and make it an anchored object. More work, harder to adjust, same effect -- but you don't need to resize your text frame.

  • Epub doesn't have the words in the right place

    I am using indesign cs6 on windows and this is a fxed epub.  In Dreamweaver I changed css to reflect where I wanted the words to go on page 4. When I go back to epub the words are not in the correct place. this is a children's book and needs to have the words ontop of the image.  Here is the code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">

              </div>
              </body>
    </html>
    In indesign the words are in the paragraph syle mainbody.  When I first epub this the words are on different pages. So I moved them onto the correct page and put in the css. here is part of the code
    p.page04a {
              position: absolute; font-size: 20px;          font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
              top: 47px; left: 60px; height: 33px; width: 165px;

    Hello William,
    Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you would like to delete some songs off of your iPad.  I have a couple of suggestions.
    First, I recommend swiping the individual songs on the album to get the delete option:
    Remove a song that’s been downloaded. Swipe left, then tap Delete.
    If the you are not getting a delete option and song has a cloud icon to the right of it, this indicates the song is being streamed from iTunes in the Cloud.
    You can choose to hide all songs that are not downloaded on to your iPad in Settings:
    Just show music that’s been downloaded from iCloud. Go to Settings > Music, then turn off Show All Music.
    iPad User Guide - iTunes Match
    http://help.apple.com/ipad/7/#/iPad99f373c1
    Alternatively, if the song was purchased from iTunes, you can hide the song by accessing the iTunes Store on the computer:
    To hide your purchases
    Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
    From the Store menu, choose Store > Sign In, and then enter your Apple ID and password.
    Go to the iTunes Store.
    Click Purchased from the Quick Links section on the right side of the iTunes Store.
    Choose a content type by clicking on Music, TV Shows, Apps, or Books from top.
    Hover your cursor over the item you want to hide.
    You will see an "X" either to the right or left top corner of the item.
    Click the "X" to hide that item. A confirmation dialog will appear once you click the "X."
    iTunes Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
    You will need to quit and relaunch the Music app on your iPad after hiding the purchase on your computer before seeing the changes.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Printing to .pdf from Word, right margin is cut off or truncated. Is there a fix for this?

    I often have to print Word (2011) documents to a PDF. I never noticed a problem before. But I noticed that recently (can't say when it started), the right margin is cut off or truncated. And I cannot figure out a way to stop it!
    What has changed in Mountain Lion PDF creation via the Print function is causing this!
    Any help would be appreciated!

    I did find a solution, but it does not resolve the problem.
    I have several printers installed on my MacBook Pro. The truncation problem happens whenever the printer selected is my new HP PhotoSmart 7515.
    But, if I change the printer in the dialog box to my Brother HL-4070cdw before I try to print to a PDF, then the document contents are NOT truncated!
    So I found a solution, but it is not a perfect one.
    Hopefully this helps!
