Hyphenation issue in InCopy

We have a strange issue effecting one machine in our office — his layout mode in InCopy removes all hyphens from copy after he checks out copy and makes a change. It auto flows the words where any hyphenated word falls to the next line. As a result, his text flows over the end of the document and causes confusion.
We can't find a setting that will change this; not composer, etc. His settings, to our knowledge, match the rest of ours. Any ideas?

  • Can't run the indicPreferences.js in InDesign CS6 and hyphenation issues with Malayalam

I am not able to run the indicPreferences.js in InDesign CS6 in Mac OS X 10.10.2.
But all the apple script is working fine, Also there is a red cross mark is seen next to the script icon (image attached)
I am trying to use Malayalm Unicode fonts with InDesign and it is giving me lot of hyphenation issues, How can I make the text flow with proper spacing in between characters? is this normal when I use justify all?
Suggest me a quick fix please.

Which hyphenation dictionary are you using? I have found that in many languages, there is enough divergence in spelling that some words simply cannot be hyphenated, because the hyphenation dictionary expects one spelling and Every Single Speaker of X Language On The Planet expects another.
Also, sometimes InDesign has a hard time recognizing a term typed with combining marks as the same word with precomposed characters.
Lastly: Have you used the settings in the Hyphenation pane to try to force different breaks? I think that the default settings are not appropriate for Malayalam, and I would myself only hyphenate long words. So the default settings are, I think, to hyphenate no fewer than two letters away from a word boundary, in any word with more than five letters. I'd bump that up to words of no fewer than, perhaps, seven to nine letters? And increase the letters-from-word-boundary to 3 or 4. That way only long words get hyphenated.

  • Manual text hyphenation issue!

    Hi All,
I have an issue about text hyphenation. We actually work with different languages for foreign clients. So we keep the Illustrator language accordingly to get right text breakup. Sometimes default breakup doesn’t give right breakup. So in that case we do give manual breakup for text.
So after a while, if we get feedback from client, to do change where, the breakup runs to the next line and still the hyphenation exists. So I would like to know is there any way to solve this issue.
If you see above screen shot, the left side file is the one which we did with manual text breakup. And then client given some text corrections. So while doing text corrections hyphenation run to next line.
So this is what makes me crazy. Because it is quite difficult to trace the manual hyphenations after doing the changes. The reason to difficult is, we do multi files and multi text breakups. So i really want to know, if there is a way to solve this issue.
Thanks for the time to read this and appreciate for positive reply.

I've Got Bad News For You.
It is the exact option you were looking for, and it has been so since ... well, about 1986, as that's when I started typesetting, and this feature was already there in WordPerfect 4.2.
Not so in Illustrator CS4 (v14.0), March 2012. You can insert soft hyphens until you go blue in the face but Illustrator simply ignores them. See the soft hyphen in the middle of "hypothesis" in the right column:
Now I showed some initiative, and after finding out that it indeed does not work (as you did), I turned to Google (which you did not), and that led me to this discussion: http://forums.adobe.com/message/1258567
This crucial feature does not work, and there is no easy way to work around it either. Please complain to Adobe.
(I did not try CS5.5 -- perhaps it works for that version, perhaps it does not. Anyone else care to see?)

  • Hyphenation issues when copying from word document

    OS X Mavericks / Indesign CC2014
I'm having an issue copying & pasting text from Microsoft Word into an Indesign document. Mainly happens with copy in foreign language (in my case Spanish & Polish). If I copy a block of text with a hyphen in it, the hyphen comes over as a character (like a manually inserted hyphen) and stays with the copy, even in the middle of a paragraph. If I select all of the copy in Word, then turn off hyphenation, I don't have the issue as all of the automatic hyphenation is removed. But sometimes I forget...
Any thoughts on why this occurs - don't really notice it happening with English copy.

What happens when you place the same block of text instead of copying & pasting? Sometimes I have to do some pretty extensive file massage (conversion to other formats, opening those other formats in OpenOffice, etc.) to get multilingual stuff to work at all.
Word's handling of hyphenation is odd, and I don't trust the clipboard. If you're using Word files supplied by third parties (which seems likely) you could have files from a variety of platforms and versions in play. Maybe somebody inserted Optional Hyphens in these languages?
There's a preference for "Clipboard Handling" that will let you choose whether you're pasting raw text or rich text

  • Export Notes Script Issue for InCopy

    Hello,
I have a script for InCopy that is suppose to look for every note in an InCopy document and export it to a text file. It doesn't find notes that are in inline text frames, grouped text frames, or notes that are in anchored objects. I have attached the script and a sample InCopy document. Could anyone help me modify it so it can find every note?
    Thanks,

Because InLined/Anchored TFs or Grouped TFs etc. aren't on page - the Parent for it is Character in another TextFrame or Group - not Page.
So you need to convert your code to go through all InLined/Anchored TextFrames in TextFrames and in Groups.

  • Incopy link will not update in InDesign and XML Story files

So I have a couple of questions.
I work for a publisher and we have a standard InDesign to Incopy workflow. Recently we have started having issues with InCopy links. First some basic info would probably be helpful. We use Windows XP =(, and we are using InDesign and Incopy CS3. All of our files are on a server. When I or people on my team sometimes attempt to update Incopy links, they will simply not update. Then when we check the link it says that it is zero k in size and is pretty much fried, cannot open in Icopy or InDesign. Why this is so nasty is because if the file cannot be updated all the work in the story that was done in InCopy is lost. Then to make matters worse, if we unlink the incopy file sometimes when we go to save indesign completely crashes. Is this a permissions issue as our IT department is fairly ignorant about design workflows on servers and has been inconsistent about the permissions. Also these .xml files seem to be populating the folder where we keep our InDesign files, when we open them they have basic information on the story links. I have attempted to find out more info on these files but have had very little luck.
    Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks!

    I cannot import video files.

  • Incopy: Text Macros not working from machine to machine, same template

    Hello there - Merry Christmas!
This is my first post as I have exhausted my troubleshooting on an issue within Incopy CS4, version 6.06, Text Macro's.
I have a template that is shared by all users on similar windows XP machines. I could go into more detail if needed here but here's the problem in a nutshell:
I have a nested style, added as a text macro in Incopy, that goes something like this:
    USER NAME >>>> SHIFT+ENTER
    [email protected]
    Screenshots and further explanation below.
I add this as a text macros, keep text attributes, apply a key combo and I'm off. Or so I think.
When I apply the style in the same shared template on one machine - which for all intensive purposes looks the same as another machine (setup, application, fonts), applying the text macro gives the correct style (in layout mode), no missing fonts.
However, on another machine, the macro is applied, go into layout view and it shows the text with the "missing" font pink highlight indicator.
If I apply the style without the macro, the style works in layout mode - no missing font.
I have checked all the settings in Incopy and made sure they are the same on both machines, I have reinstalled the application (InCopy), and uninstalled and reinstalled all fonts on both machines to ensure they are identical.
I have no idea at this point why on one machine the text macros works and on another it does not.
Any insight would be so truly appreciated!
    Cheers & Thank you.

Since you have allowed all macros, the problem appears to be that the macros are not available.
I noticed in your screencast that the screentip for one of the macros read Normal.NewMacros.Indent. That indicates that the macro should be found in your default template Normal.dotm. For another, the screentip was Project.NewMacros.Bold or something like
that. That makes me suspect the macro is NOT in Normal.dotm
From Word, press Alt+F11 to activate the Visual Basic Editor.
You'll see the Project Explorer on the left hand side. In the screenshot above, you see that my Normal template has one module, named basCode. The macros in this module are globally available in Word.
Check whether you can find macros in your Normal template, under Modules. Double-click a module to see its contents.

  • How to use macros in InCopy

I am having an issue using InCopy and the macro section. I am a new user to InCopy, and I'm trying to figure out how to:
Use a code that means something. For example: AB = $5.00
On my document, I at all times want AB to be there until I tell it to input the macro. Is there a way?
Also, if at some point I need to update the macro (change of price), is there a way I can edit the price, and it will AUTOMATICALLY do the updating in my document?

You'll need to use find/change for what you're trying to do.

  • Hyphenation in Spanish

I have been working on a brochure in spanish and am running in to hyphenation issues where the lines are breaking 'improperly' for formal spanish. Is there a spanish language hyphenation plug in for Indesign CS3 that will adjust to a certain language?
Any direction would be gratefully appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Jessica Wyman

It is still common practice in Puerto Rico to not hyphenate at all, this is a holdover from the days of Quark's dominance, when the Passport edition was ridiculously overpriced and dongled to boot.
My Argentinian translator claims that there are still quite a few elderly academic folk who claim that capital letters do not require accents; she says that this is due to what those glyphs looked like in terminal fonts (squashed to fit the same height as an unaccented cap) that those academics used twenty years ago. So, I'm entirely unsurprised to hear that Quark's ludicrous prices for Passport still have consequences for typesetting conventions, many years later. Similar claims (not against Quark, of course) could be made about the movement of Chinese punctuation to the baseline, or having an ordinary word space before punctuation in French. It makes me wish I was enrolled in some sort of frivolous "Science, Technology and Society" program; I smell the beginnings of a good paper here.

  • Update on Mac : InDesign not installed ?

    Hello,
I purchased yesterday InDesign CS4 Middle-Eastern edition, for Macintosh. It installed fine, registered fine, works fine, but I am unable to update to version 6.0.2 (the latest version). Both the automatic update and the manual update fail.
The automatic update, through Adobe Updater, updates the minor components correctly, but gives the following error for the main component :
The manual update, through file AdobeInDesign6Patch-All.dmg downloaded from WinSoft's website, gives :
If someone has had this issue, please advise me how to complete the update. I already contacted official support, but I don't know when they will answer. Normally, I work on a PC, but I got myself a Mac a few days ago, and I'm finalizing a project, and this InDesign update addresses important hyphenation issues.
I installed InDesign CS4 in the /Applications folder (default folder) on my MacBook. I am using Snow Leopard. I don't understand why the updater does not detect my installation. Afterwards, I installed again, but the update still fails.

After two days of hardships, I figured it out. In the installation instructions of the upgrade, it is said than you must upgrade from version 6.0.0.421. I had read those instructions, but I didn't notice that, in fact, I have version 6.0.0.407. This was the problem. The update instructions give you a link to required 6.0.0.421 version, a link different from the one given when I purchased InDesign ME !
In summary, when you buy InDesign ME, you get a link to :
    Adobe_InDesign_CS4ME.dmg
    (version 6.0.0.407)
But, in the installation instructions of the update, you get a link to :
    AdobeInDesign6-Middle-Eastern.dmg
    (version 6.0.0.421)
Both files are over 1 GB, and you must uninstall one to install the other. So, what's the logic behind this ? I don't know and I don't care. I am just very happy that everything works and that I can move on with my project.

  • InDesign CS4 crash under Lion

    I migrated InDesign CS4 V. 6.0.6 to a newly purchased MacBookPro with Mac OS X V. 10.7.2.
On opening InDesign it crashes reliably. Found a discussion site that suggest that the SING folder
in System Library is the problem. That is true!
More specifically, within the SING folder is a Mark II folder
that contains 3 items. The offending item is the SINGCore.bundle.
When I move the SINGCore.bundle into the trash InDesign will load. Initially I got a message pointing to
    Hyphenation issues.
    My questions:
    (1) What am I missing by deleting the SINGCore.bundle and does it affect older saved documents upon opening them?
    (2) When can users expect Adobe to fix this apparently prevalent problem under the Lion operating system?

SeaWolf WD for you question about the SINGCore.bundle I would recommend posting in the InDesign forum.  Have you tried removing InDesign though and then trying a fresh install from the installation media?  Often times users who try to migrate the Adobe applications to a new computer end up facing all kinds of different difficulties.  A clean install of the application will typically resolve the issue.

  • Need advice on choosing programs for laying out and editing books

I've been editing books in Microsoft Word but my clients are asking me to help do the layout and prep to take their books to a printer.
I am looking to find out what the least expensive (for now) but necessary programs I would need to purchase in order to take a book from a Word manuscript to print-ready.
Please let me know what programs I need (at a minimum) - someone mentioned InDesign and InCopy, would I need anything else?
I will also need to purchase a new laptop and need to know what the minimum requirements would be to run such programs i.e. how much hard drive space, speed and ram.
I currently have a Gateway, but it is dying.
    Thank you.

As Daniel says, if you have InDesign and you're the only one working on the docuument, that's all you need. Think of InCopy as a hugely-stripped-down version with only the text editor in it, but you can do everything you need in InDesign (either writing the text directly into the document, or importing formatted text from Word). InDesign has great typography features and a basic spellchecker, Word has less-advanced typography but can check grammar.
The typical workflow in a newsroom will split copywriting from layout, as the journalists aren't allowed to format the page and the graphics dept can't write articles. So, the text is written in InCopy by a bunch of people, who then pass the content to someone with InDesign who imports it and lays out the issue. InCopy basically allows people to write a chunk of text that will fit in a certain space, but it doesn't care what the overall document looks like. It has some very powerful features for collaboration, but to put it bluntly, text is text - provided you get the styles mapping sorted, ID doesn't care where it comes from.
Unless you're working with this split-job-role system there's no reason you'd need to use InCopy.

  • Hyphenation loss (indesign CS 4 -- incopy CS4)

    Hi,
by creating an incopy file (.icma) out of indesign (.idd) in some incopy files the hyphenation marking gets lost --> in indesign the hyphenation is activated, but in incopy the hyphenation marking is gone.
This problem hasn't appeared in seven incopy files before but suddenly in the 8th incopy file the problem was there!
Has somebody any idea what could be the problem?
    Thank you.
P.S.: Is there a handbook only for InCopy CS4 available? (not for InDesign)

I'm having the same issue. I've been experimenting with a recent document that exhibited reflowing.
The text and the Paragraph Style attributed to the text in my InDesign document have hyphenation turned on. But the InCopy file shows that hyphenation is off.
I decided to create a clean test document, and I cut and pasted just one page of text from the old InDesign document. When I created the InCopy Assignment from the new clean document, the hyphenation was preserved.
So, wondering what to do, my hunch at the moment is that the issue may lie with the fact that I've been building on the same document for several years. It started as a CS3 document. I'm going to re-create my InDesign document from scratch.
There's another forum message on the subject. I think my experiment seems to reveal another facet to the puzzle.

  • CS5 ISSUE - STORIES NOT LOCKING ALL THE TIME IN INCOPY

I have an issue where sometimes we will have one user open a story and it will NOT show it as being locked (pencil with line through it).  The majority of the time it will, but seems to happen too often and I see it being a problem this coming weekend as they start the switch from Quark to CS5.  I just can't have users being able to check out the same story as one person will overwrite the other.  We work off a file server with ExtremeZip installed.  Has anyone else seen this?  Sometimes if the document is available to be refreshed, like on a different story, it will then put a lock on the file.   I am not doing anything cross platform, this testing is done on 2 macbook pro's with both IC and ID CS5 installed.  Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks, Bob

We have also had this problem. We started the Indesign/Incopy workflow in CS2 and did not see this happen until CS4. It's continuing in CS5. Apparently there is a delay in the lock file being created. If someone else checks the story out before that locked file is created, it appears both parties have the story checked out. However, only one of them actually has command of the file and only their edits will be saved. We reported this to Adobe last year when we began seeing it in CS4, and they were able to replicate the problem; however, they've not fixed it.
We haven't tried the "refresh" workaround. I'll give that a try. I've also wondered if checking out multiple stories at once causes the problem. Some of our editors have the habit of checking out all the stories in a layout at one time. Obviously, it takes a little time for the locked files to be created on as many as 100 stories. If someone else tries to check out one of those stories in the meanwhile, Incopy lets them. At that point, we have a problem.
