Hyphenation

Please, how to tell Pages where words can been hyphenated in other languages, say german, arbitrary/fix? Its dictionary is so silly.

You could try installing the openoffice German dictionaries

If that doesn't help, switch to more professional apps like Word or LibreOffice.

  • Text breaks / hyphenations – no break?

    Hey, I am curious if there is a way that InDesign can format text boxes so there are no hyphenated words at all. I understand that i can manually select words and format "no break" in the text formatting options, but is there a way to do this for every word in the text box? I'm asking because I have a very large document and any changes to the size of text boxes, for instance, neccessitates me to go to every word that's breaking with a hyphen and choose "no break." It seems like there has got to be a less tedious way to do this…
    Thanks so much,
    Quin

    Hey Peter (and Willi)
    I've tried to figure out how to do this but somehow I can't get the style to work. I've tried playing around with a paragraph style I've created called "variety/species listing" to set the first line as Garamond, Bold 16 and the second line as Garamond, Italic, 16 – and I'm enclosing images to illustrate how no matter how I set the styles, it continues to display the text as Garamond, Bold, 16.
    I've also tried breaking links to the style and then reapplying it. Images enclosed (how the "variety/species listing" style is being applied is illustrated in the first two lines of the final image).
    Any advice?

  • Where is the hyphen (-) on the apple TV?  I am trying to set up my network and there is a hyphen in the password for the network

    Where is the hyphen on the apple TV?  I am trying to set up my network and there is a hyphen in the password for the network

    A few options to try:
    They hyphen should be next to the + on the character map.
    If you are still having issues, provided your ATV software is up to date, you can now connect an Apple Wireless Keyboard through bluetooth connections.
    Change your network password so it does not use a hyphen
    Good luck!

  • How can I get ExportPDF to not add hyphens when converting to Word?

    I am using the online service ExportPDF, at https://cloud.acrobat.com/exportpdf .It automatically adds hyphens in the resulting Word document for all words that were auto-hyphenated at line ends in the original PDF. How can I get it to convert these as whole words?
    I know that for example in InDesign there is a setting in the Preferences menu and changing it from Retain Flowing Text to Retain Page Layout should remove such extra hyphens upon exporting. But I don't find any such settings for the ExportPDF service online.
    It matters because I frequently need to cut and paste converted text from the Word documents into other documents with different formatting, and the hyphens, which are now hard characters, come out all wrong.
    Can anyone help with this?

    Hi liquidandrew,
    There is no setting in ExportPDF to change the output, other than choosing a language for OCR. ExportPDF does it's best to keep the converted document true to the original, so it sounds like it's maintaining the hyphens where they appear in the PDF. Could you do a quick find/replace in Word to remove the hyphens? However, you would run the risk of removing hyphens where you want them, such as in compound words.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Is it possible to remove hyphens at the end of a line separating parts of a word? Thank you

    Hi there,
    I was wondering, Indesign automatically adds hyphens at the end of a line to join one part of the word with the next part (on the next line). Is there any way to get rid of this in my entire document so that indesign automatically puts the word on the next line rather than separating it with a hyphen? I've been going through it manually and correcting it but it's taking many hours.
    Let me know if it's not clear what I'm saying
    Many thanks

    Ouch!  What you need to do is turn "hyphenating" off.  Select all your text and do it in the control panel like this:
    You can also turn it off before you start in the paragraph panel, or by turning it off with no documents open make it off by default.

  • Append hyphen automatically after the wrapping of text in the dimension field

    I want to Append hyphen automatically after the wrapping of text in the dimension field.
    e.g the text reads "I want to wrap this text". then if cell width exceeds after "I want to wrap" then it should be displayed like this "I want to wrap-" "this text".
    Thanks in advance,

    Thanks for your input.
    Let me tell you what I have understood. I will create a variable having the formula (which i have earlier written) in universe. Whenever i need to use the formula in infoview, I will call the variable instead. That's fine. But again, I will have the same problem. If I do any change in infoview level, the cell width is bound to change as it is not the free standing cell, its a column among othe one. e.g.
    A  B  C
    1  2  3
    4  5  6
    (you can think B as the column). Any change(addition, deletion of columns) will certainly change the cell width of B. So, again I need to calculate the things, which i dont want.
    Nita_here: I manually calculated that after 12 characters, the cell wraps the text.
    I wonder if there would be a way to do the things dynamically.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nita

  • Wrong hyphenation on Pages 5.2 (dutch)

    In dutch, the word 'vrijwilliger' (volunteer) is hyphenated as 'vri-jwilliger'. Thats not correct: should be 'vrij-williger'.
    How can this be corrected?

    right click on the word and choose an option.
    Also give Apple feedback:

  • In "save as"-dialogues, : (colon) turns into - (hyphen)?

    ahoi.
    in all "save as"-dialogues in os x 10.8, i cant use a : (colon) as character in the filename; instead it turns into a - (hyphen). is this wanted by apple? or am i the only one with this "problem"? i changed nothing in the settings...

    The colon is an illegal character in Mac filenames. This is a historical carry-over from the pre-Mac OS X days when the colon character was used as a delimiter in paths, instead of the slash ('/') that is used by the current Unix-based system.

  • A space is sometimes added before hyphenation when creating a pdf

    In using Acrobat 9.5 I have found that sometimes when a pdf is created from Quark 8, the new pdf has a space right before the soft hyphen at the end of a line of text that was not there in the original file. This space does not get inserted before all soft hyphens, just randomly, and there seems to be no way of knowing where it will show up. The space does not always occur in the same word with the same soft hyphen. Is there a setting I am missing that will eliminate this glitch?

    Use the below code..It will solve your problem..
    Data: c_space type c value space.
    SHIFT v_text RIGHT DELETING TRAILING C_SPACE.
    SHIFT v_text LEFT DELETING LEADING C_SPACE.
    <b>OR</b>
    Use CONDENSE statement.

  • Hyphenation & text-align:justify in PDF's with CFDOCUMENT

    Hello everybody!
    We are using CF8.1 and are having problems of generating well designed PDF outputs with CFDOCUMENT. We would like to print out reports, which are hyphenated and have the text aligned. Example:
    This works fine:
    <html lang="en">
    <STYLE>p { width:260px;background-color:blue;-moz-hyphens: auto; -o-hyphens: auto; -webkit-hyphens: auto; -ms-hyphens: auto;  -hyphens: auto;text-align:justify}</STYLE>
    <P>Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer</P>
    </html>
    This won't:
    <CFDOCUMENT FORMAT="PDF">
    <html lang="en">
          <STYLE>p { width:260px;background-color:blue;-moz-hyphens: auto; -o-hyphens: auto; -webkit-hyphens: auto; -ms-hyphens: auto;  -hyphens: auto;text-align:justify}</STYLE>
          <P>Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer Haematodynamometer</P>
    </html>
    </CFDOCUMENT>
    Do you have any solutions on this topics? Are do I have to wait until CF11.
    Thanks in advance

    Now, the problem is that, while the client likes this, they don't like that the headers and footers are grayed out and the colors are not as vibrant in Word as the program part I created and saved as a PDF.
    They're being a bit impractical in their complaints, in fact they remind me of my Dad!  The final product is still fine.
    4tun8mom wrote:
    They also don't like that if we keep this as a Word document, all the text is editable.
    That's fair enough, the solution would be to make the text in the header and footer an image instead.
    4tun8mom wrote:
    So my question is, can I create a PDF that has the same features with the expandable text control boxes.  If I can, would you recommend InDesign to do this?
    No you can't.  I'm pretty sure you can't create a PDF with expandable boxes and I'm very sure that you can't create a PDF that will add pages with headers and footrs.  However you can create a PDF with basic fillable text boxes, they're called forms and you need Acrobat as well to do it, google it and you'll find plenty of info.

  • Message mapping for checking hyphens (-) in material number

    Hi All,
    I have an interface in PI 7.1 for product change and product create coming from ORACLE to SAP
    Now, the reqmt is to take the ORACLE product which could have hyphens or without hyphens
    In SAP, the product can have upto 40 characters and if something without hyphens come in, then it adds leading zeros while creating and while changing, SAP expects a product with leading zeros
    So, how do I handle this? How do I check in message mapping, the product with hyphens or without and write a condition to it.
    Here is my idea
    Take the product, use a message mapping function to check for products without hyphens and if YES, add leading zeros upto 40 characters
    Can anyone let me know how this could be achieved using message mapping function
    I am sure this kind of reqmt especially leading zeros for products is very common in PI interface circle
    So, please let me know the details
    Thx
    mike

    Hi Mike,
                  your requirement can be solved without UDF too
    inputfield ---------------->
                                                 indexOf() ------------>
    Constant(-)---------->                                                  less---->if ----->target field
    constant(0)---------->
    inputfield  and contant (hyphen) are inputs to standard text function indexOf. Output of IndexOF and constant(zero) are inputs to standard arithmetic function less. Out put of less goes to boolean function if. The IF has two inputs then and else .
    For then part write this logic
    inputfield----> formatNumber()---->then
    in standard arithmetic function Formatnumber  specify number format with 40 zeroes, leave decimal separetor blank.
    Now for the else part of "IF" write this
    inputfield----->else
    Finally
    output of "IF" goes to target field
    IF------>target

  • In "Notes", typing a hyphen deletes the entire line of text

    Has anybody encounterd goofiness in Notes?  I am frequently experiencing problems where Notes is deletes my typing.  This happens often at random times but if I switch to a different line on the page it will let me type.  Typing a hyphen will ALWAYS delete the entire line of text.
    Perplexed... has been going on for months.  Did not used to happen....

    Excellent suggestion, Peter.
    Tabbing proved to be a little dodgy, simply because my paragraphs are set to Justify with Last Line Aligned Left, and so depending on where I am in a line of text, I'd have to get really deep into tinkering with my tab settings. But just using the space bar and tweaking the character styles yielded fine results.
    Thanks!

  • Consolas hyphen problem in PDFs

    Here's the setup: FrameMaker 7.2, Windows XP, Acrobat Pro 8.1.3, although I think all versions are actually irrelevant to the issue.
    I recently switched to Consolas font for my code listings.  But when Acrobat/Distiller converts the FrameMaker file to PDF, the hyphens end up with the wrong encoding.
    It's definitely an Acrobat issue.  When I copy-paste from my FrameMaker source file to a text file, the consolas hyphen correctly shows as unicode 2D (decimal 45, the "hyphen minus" character).  But copy-pasting from the PDF ends up with the unicode 2010 character (the "hyphen" instead of the "hyphen minus" char).  And while they "look" the same, engineering readers need to be able to copy-paste from the PDF.
    So, is there a patch or a way to tell Distiller to map this character as needed?
    TIA,
    -Monique

    Exactly how are you converting to PDF. You say Acrobat/Distiller, but what are the steps you are taking. There are too many options not to isolate your process first. Are you printing to the Adobe PDF printer, exporting, or something else?

  • Semicolon overstriking soft hyphen in InDesign CS5.5 ME

    Hi
    I'm experiencing a weird problem with a client project. I'm setting a book in New Caledonia LT Std version 1.040 using InDesign CS5.5 ME. In one line, InDesign is hyphenating the word "Littérature" between the "t"s. It looks fine on screen, but when I PDF it, a semicolon overstrikes the hyphen. The hyphen prints correctly out of InDesign. When I change the font to the Type 1 version of New Caledonia, it PDFs and prints correctly.
    My best guess is that it's a problem with the font, but I don't know. It's only happening in this one case right now, but in an earlier draft of the pages, it happened elsewhere.
    Has anyone experienced this? Got any thoughts on what might be causing it?
    I don't know if there's a way to debug the font, but does anyone know if Adobe would supply the updated version of the font if it's a bug in the old version?
    Thanks.

    Save as IDML. Don’t expect it to work perfectly.
