I.3d False start point happening again !

i.3d,
Since the fix we worked on last week:
Excellent. That should be it. Here one from Apple:
"If Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server is restarted unexpectedly, the current mount point listed in /Volumes may not be deleted and a new ("false") mount point with a " 1" appended to the name may appear (such as "My Volume 1"). "
So, this is not a CCC issue at all.
Doing a fresh clone is probably a good idea, although, you could just boot from the existing clone and repeat the procedure to delete the "leftovers".
As to the genius bit - I am faltered, but I'd rather put down to being a nerd with no life
Seriously it's just a coincidence that I read this article a while ago, and while moving a clone to my new laptop, a two weeks ago, ended up with 11GB free on a 320GB disc... jumped to volumes, deleted stuff and a'voila!
The problem happened again. This time it seemed to create a Seagate , Seagate 1 and even Seagate 2,
although the hard drive space did not fill this time. My daughter had plugged in the external drive (I had left it unplugged) and then today (Wednesday evening) she said her Safari would not stay connected. So I did the Go to menu thing as we discussed,i.e., /volumes/ and saw duplicate copies of the external. I am currently deleting these now. As you suggested this is a Apple problem, not a CCC problem. The problem seems to have something to do with restarting OSX or OSX server, so I can't imagine why this is happening. We have six Mac's in the house and the others are fine.
In this case I could not eject the external drive, had to press option key & empty trash because there were locked items that could not be deleted. So this is at best puzzling.
It seems that this computer needs to be refreshed at the Apple store, so I'll make an appointment and bring it it in. Do you have any additional info on why this is happening ? We discussed and solved this

If you have Mail set to "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message, it could be they have been deleted from the server.

  • It's happened again! Problem with replacement screen (mysterious dark O ring in the centre)

I had my screen replaced for a dark O ring appearing in the centre about half a year ago. It must be caused by the apple logo on the reverse.
It's now starting to happen again and my 3 year applecare has run out
What can I do? Does a new screen come with a guarantee of any kind?

    Welcome to the forum!
This has been a fairly common problem with Z series units, and the cure is LCD replacement.
Brand new LCDs change hands for under $200 on eBay. If you are handy and careful enough, replacing the LCD isn't that much of a problem.
Hope this helps and good luck.

It is a known issue and un-conventional remedy.
It is Hardware failure. I would get the iPhone changed for a good one.

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

The proper way to close Firefox is through the File menu "Exit" or the equivalent with the Firefox button.

Firefox already running, to properly shutdown Firefox when closing the last window use File → Exit/Quit (or Firefox button → Exit). Closing Firefox with the [X] in the upper right corner closes the window ("Ctrl+W") but that does not necessarily close Firefox if it has subtasks running. If you want to close and reopen Firefox use the "Restart" within Add-ons if you made a change requiring a restart, or install "[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/ Restartless Restart]" ("Ctrl+Alt+R") which will allow you to take Firefox down and restart without having to check the Windows Task Manager to see if Firefox first actually ended. • Hi, my iPad 2 keeps dropping out and going back to blank screen, I then have to enter my password again, start downloading or reading and it happens again. I have reset the iPad but it is still the same.

Hi, my iPad 2 keeps dropping out and going back to a blank screen. I have to again enter my password and go back to what I was doing and then it happens again, I have tried resetting and nothing has changed.
    Thanks
    Ron

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • TS3276 Well it happened again. Why does my apple me account stop sending mail for no apparent reason. One minute it is working find and 10 seconds latter you get error messages that it does not recognize your password. I am really fed up with the mail sof

Things were going well. Mail was working fine and then the following error message appears out of nowhere. I had not changed any settings. From that point on all efforts to send mail failed, and the error message appeared even thought I used the password to log back in after I quit. Now, an hour after the problem started it takes my password (on the second try after the error message appears) once and sends a test message. Then, one minute later it gives the error message again and refuses to send anything. Why is mail so inconsistent? What can I do in the future to address the problem?
Error message reads "The SMTP server "xxxxx" rejected the password for user "xxx" Please re-enter your password or cancel.
When mail does work again. Should I click the remember this password in keychain or am I just asking for more trouble?
I'm writing this using my IMac computer in a different room. The error also occurs on my powerbook running my new MacBook Pro 12 inch.
    Fed up Mac user.

I"m no expert but this used to happen to me all the time (stop downloading, asking for my password, nothing downloading, walking away- 24 hours or more later, all is fine, only to later start all over again)
Well, i gave up for a long time and stopped using that account with mac mail and only accessed it online..recently went and changed the pop3 to only pop and now it works beautifully and seamlessly. Don't ask me why or how, but it does so thought I'd share.

  • GROWL! It happened again, random reboots.

Well I happened again three times last night so now I'm wondering if its the power supply or not. I posted earlier, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=33776&sid=&hilight=Railven and Danny helped me out, by the way thanks Danny, so I ended up buying a new power supply but last night for the first time since I installed my new power supply it happened again. It has been a week since I installed my new power supply.
Well I'm not sure what the cause is but here are the the things I was doing while it happened:
first time: using winamp, had Nero open, had CMD open, had Alcohol 120% open, CPU IDLE, and usual Windows Services, but it happened when I copied a file from folder d:\ to folder d:\storage, file was roughly 680MBs and it rebooted at 10seconds left till completetion.
second time: just rebooted computer, so I attempted to burn my DVD and it rebooted when DVD was around 89% complete. Nothing else running aside usual Windows Services and CPU IDLE.
third time: Just rebooted, opened up Nero and computer reboot during Identifiying SCI/IDE drives.
So I'm starting to point the finger at Nero on this thing. Or at least some where in the direction of IMAPI or my IDE setup. I have the following:
    2x80gb Maxtor RAID0 on ICH5R (drive C:)
160gb Maxtor SATA on PROMISE serial3 (drive D:)
    Lite-On CD-RW and DVD+RW on IDE0
I just updated my firmware for the DVD drive, thank god it didn't reboot during that process, and went ahead and updated all my other drivers for my hardware.
I have the following options set in the BIOS:
    NATIVE
    SATA ONLY
    PATA ON
    PATA BOTH
    SATA AS RAID
    PROMISE AS SATA
I honestly can't figure out why it would do that. And after I got my new power supply I thought I rid myself of that problem since sometimes it would reboot while I played Call of Duty but yesterday, during the day, I played Call of Duty for at least 3 hours. Someone once mentioned IRQ Sharing as a conflict, but I'm not a genuis at that stuff so here are my IRQs curtesouy of SiSandra:

Wow talk about the vast responses. You guys are AWESOME! Now to answer those questions and toss in some of the stuff I just noticed.
As far USB devices I have the following connected and I haven't experienced any video related problems yet:
    Logitech Elite Keyboard
    Logitech MX500
    Logitech Cam4000
    Lexmark Z705
    Radioshack DualShock2 USB
    Iomega Zip 750
and on occasions USB to Sony digi cam cable.
I don't think this is the problem and I'll explain why in a second. I've had a few more reboots but this time it happened specifically during a few things.
Since I built my system I've disabled the COM and LPT ports seeing as how I never used them. I'm confident I disabled them since I accidently disabled the FDD option not knowing it was in there once and kept getting errors on POST. But I'm 100% sure they are disabled, but I'll double check just to be sure.
As far as my RAM it has always passed MEMTEST86 even when I ran my system at DOT/MAT General/Ultra-Turbo. I haven't had any issues with my RAM after the first set I got I had to RMA. With this set I can run Ultra-Turbo with v2.7 at 2-3-2-6 8 and pass MEMTEST86 no problem. Even once I get to OS no unstabilities I've noticed and no hiccups in video or any other category. I was very pleased with the way the RAM took to my system. Oh just to note, I read on the board various places where they say to have SPD on when you use MAT but doing that I can't get out of FAST, so I set SPD off and set to Ultra-Turbo and works fine.
Hmmm I didn't know if, least this is what I'm thinking, that if you had MAT on that the AGP/PCI slots would increase in FSB too. I actually don't have CoreCenter installed I have my FSB at 201MHz since I read that helps a lot, my RAM at 402MHz, my AGP/PCI at 66mhz/33mhz and AGP at 1.5v. My system is basically stock except for the FSB 201 and MAT Ultra-Turbo. I didn't bother OC'ing since I was happy with its preformance.
And to M.W. I'm running my RAM as the website for it, the day I purchased, stated. I'm using the timings 2-3-2-6 like their website advertised, and as it is written on my packaging, with out a hitch. So I feel I'm getting what I paid for.
As for some of the new things I noticed. I'm starting to guess it really is Nero or a software conflict. Again yesterday and half of today was flawless use. My girlfriend plaid Final Fantasy XI Online for 5 hours, I listened to Winamp while playing CoD and then NFS: Underground for a few hours, and all was good. Temps where in the usual range, no slow down, no nothing that I wouldn't expect. But today my brother wanted me to show him how to back-up his DVDs since I just recently got a DVD+RW drive. So I started to show him. I have the following software installed:
    DVD X Copy Platinum
    Nero 5.5.10.134
    Alcohol 120% 1.4
Well I noticed these things. I read the DVD flawlessly using ATi DVD Player 8.7, I ripped the DVD Flawlessly using DVD X Copy, and I played the DVD files flawlessly using ATi File Player 8.7. However once I loaded Nero to burn the DVD I got an unsual start up. Nero usually starts up with my Lite-On CD-RW as the main drive, this time it prompted me to choose between my burners. I noticed it was odd since when ever I want to burn a DVD I'd have load Nero then manually choose my recorder. ANyways as the prompt appeared I double clicked my DVD+RW and boom PC rebooted.
After reboot I went back to Nero and the prompt appeared again so I selected my DVD+RW thinking it would happen again and it went fine. I burned the DVD and it works fine. I loaded the DVD back into my drive and clicked ATi DVD Player 8.7 to test it and boom system reboot again.

~ They all had Nero involved.
So is it possible my DVD+RW is causing a conflict? Maybe it is IMAPI? Or is it that say Nero locks the DVD+RW once it is activated and another program trying to access it causes a conflict. Think that could be possible? I'm going to see if I can RMA the drive just to be sure.
Although this is my current theory I am very much open for any advice.

  • Loop Particles to starting point.

    Hello All,
I am trying to put together a small 2 second clip that will loop forever - WITH LOOKING LIKE IT'S STARTING OVER. I am wondering if there is anyway to Loop the particle generators so that the end point on the clip is the same one that the starting point is, I just can't stand that JARRING JUMP at the end of the clip when it loops - it's totally obvious that it's starting over and I'd like it to look like a never ending background! Thanks to anyone who's got a solution!
    Been at this for hours...
I've already tried reversing the clip in FCP and while the start and endpoints do match up - the direction changes, AGAIN making that jarring thing happen!
    Thanks again!

I looped a simple particle system like this- cloned the emitter, then changed the timing to variable speed of the clone, and used Ease in and out on the keyframes.

  • P965 Platinum False Start: Help...

I searched the boards and found a few threads dealing with the topic of false starts, but none really seemed to really address the situation completely.
    First, my system specs:
    MSI P965 Platinum
    v1.4 bios
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
    RAM: CFD W2U800CQ-1GLZJ (DDR2-800 / 2GB)
    VIDEO: RX1950-E512H (Radeon 1950GT 512MB)
    DVD1: ASUS DRW-1814BLT SATA
DVD2: Pioneer DVR-A07-J-BK PATA (currently not connected)
    HDD1: Hitachi HDT725032VLA360 320GB SATA
HDD2: Maxtor 7L250R0 250GB PATA (currently not connected)
Internal memory card reader: Owltech FA405MX3(B)
     - connected directly to USB header on motherboard
I also have a USB mouse, PS/2 keyboard, Wacom tablet, and a USB external hard drive all currently attached to the system.  I have 2 case fans (80mm and a 120mm) to go along with a stock Intel CPU fan and a small 45mm fan for the Northbridge.
    No overclocking on the system
    Now, the story:
I've been having false start ever since I put the system together.  After reading a few of the threads, I tried a variety of different things like re-seating the CPU, re-seating the motherboard, re-seating the video card (the only card currently in the system), unplugging / plugging the power connectors on the board...  But not seemed to stop the false starts.  I did, however, find out that the false starts only occurred when completely switching the power off on the PSU.  I have a power strip and I usually shut my system down completely and then turn the main switch off on the strip.  One day I happened to forget turning the power strip off and when I went to start the system up, no false start.
Now, fast forward to this morning.  I had (yes, had) an Enermax Liberty 620 Watt PSU in the system.  I had turned off the main switch on the power strip so I turned that on, then hit the power switch on the case.
    POP
I saw a bright flash near the PSU and the system went dead.  I immediately switched off the switch on the power strip and opened up the case.  I could smell burned metal.  I removed the PSU and took a peak through the grating and I could see that something inside blew-up.  The system was running fine (outside of the false starts) for three weeks.
Fortunately, I had an old Antec True430 PSU lying around so I just plugged that in and everything seems to be working (again, except for the false starts).  I did remove DVD2 and HDD2 to lower the power load just in case.
    My questions:
    - Are the false start a common occurrence with this motherboard?
    - Has there been an official explanation from MSI as to why they happen?
    - Could the false starts have been a cause for the PSU to finally blow after two weeks?
    - Is it not good to turn off the main switch on the power strip?  In other words, is it best to keep the PSU powered?
    - Is there an actual fix to stop false start altogether?
I would really appreciate any and all feedback.  I'm really stumped (and bitter) about the PSU blowing.  I'm going to try and see if the warranty covers this incident.

Quote from: Quadrifoglio Verde on 29-April-07, 00:38:06
(I'm not convinced however that any Liberty could be rated as a good PSU)
Hmm...  Before forking over the money, I did read a handful of reviews.  I think these are the ones I read:
    ExtremeOverclocking.com
    ViperLair.com
    Bjorn3d.com
    Phoronix.com
    XSReviews.co.uk
    SilentPCReview.com
    guru3d.com
    TweakTown.com
    HotHardware.com
    ThinkComputers.org
The guy at the store I bought it from also assured me that it was a solid PSU.  Maybe not the best on the market, but enough for what my system required.  In any case, I don't really want to turn this thread into a PSU discussion (even though I probably do need a refresher course).  We can save that one for another day.
Back to the original subject (my apologies for digressing)...
I'm guessing there hasn't been any sort of official word from MSI regarding this false restart problem?

  • My macbook shuts off randomly, how do I know what's causing this and prevent it from happening again?

My macbook shuts off and I kept a journal for it because mine's got complications.
    July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
    July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
    July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
    July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
    July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
    However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
    July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
    July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
    July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
    Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
    Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore.
Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice.

  • When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

I got my ipad2 replaced yesterday. And this new ipad started giving me problem by crashing aps. Then I restored the ipad twice but the problem was still there. I called apple and they fixed it by doing Reset All Settings. But now I have this weird problem. When I open Mail the screen flickers random blue and gray appeared on the screen. I took a video too. Will that happen again? Is it hardware problem? This ipad2 32GB was replaced yesterday and I think it is refurbished. Are replace product refurbished?

There is no way for anyone here to know if your replacement iPad is a refurbished unit.  Per Apple's replacement policy, replacements can be refurbished units.  If you feel the unit is not working correctly, take it back, let them check it out and if found defective, they will replace that unit.

  • LR 5.7 "encountered an error when reading from its preview cache". Happened the other day, I went to a day old backup and continued working. But now it happened again. LR renamed the catalog "Lightroom 5_ANDERS-OFFICE8_Mar-15-230042-2015_Conflict".

I installed 5.7, ran ok for a while. Then it gave the error message that the preview cache was bad. A few times I have gotten this message and it restarts and repairs it. But now it couldn't. Renamed the Lightroom 5 catalog with the name "Lightroom 5_ANDERS-OFFICE8_Mar-15-230042-2015_Conflict". I got a backup and ran with that, and after a few days it happened again. It cannot repair and read the cache and shuts down.
What should I do? I can probably go to a backup again, but I keep losing work. I now backup every day.
But I need the system to be stable.
This is Windows 8.1. Lots of RAM and disk space.

The catalog isn't the problem, but rather that preview file. Use Windows Explorer or Finder (depending on your operating system) to browse to the folder that contains your catalog. Locate and delete the folder that has the extension .lrdata. Then you should be able to start Lightroom normally and it will begin generating a new cache file.
