I.43 GHz eMac

I.43 GHz eMac came with 10.4 installed.
I need it to run in 10.3.6.
I installed 10.3.4 from a retail OS installer and while the installation went okay, my display output is only 800x 600... and that is the only choice in the Displays preferences pane.
I realize that I am probably missing the right driver for the video card (ATY, RV351) but I have no idea where I can find such that will work under 10.3.6.
I have also net-installed 10.3.6 a baseload which was created on a 1.25 GHz eMac but this had an ATY,RV280 card installed and clearly this driver doesn't do anything for the ATY, RV351.
I don't want to copy drivers from 10.4 to 10.3.6.
Can anyone advise what I need to do to get the full options, and a full display (I have a much reduced dispaly area at present - 1.5" of black space around the edges).
Thanks in advance.
And yes, we have a site license for OS X. This is is a school and our standard load is 10.3.6 so we cannot move to 10.4 yet.... otherwise we would.

  • Are 1.42 GHZ eMac scarce?

I was just wondering since I own a 1.42 GHZ eMac. I was looking on eBay to see if there were any extras I could buy from it and I did not see one 1.42 GHZ (with actual pictures) for sale anywhere. Also, I was wondering if the demand for eMacs on eBay is going up. I was wondering this because awhile ago, after the eMac was first discontinued from the retail market the prices they were demanding were way down low and now they seem to be going up and keeping their prices better then they use to. Is any of this information true? Sorry if I put it in the wrong eMac forum, I'm new to this forum.
    Thanks

I bought a 1.42 GHZ eMac which came with from the apple store -- 1 GIG RAM and 160 GB HD. I'm just wondering in some ways for my own curiosity what type of price it would command. The machine has barely been used and the original keyboard and mouse was only used to turn the machine on originally and install the wireless mouse and keyboard then put back away in the plastic wrapping. I have a 3 year apple care warranty, the internal speakers have never been used since I've always used external, and I have all the original packaging. Do you think anyone would be interested in this machine? It cost me a ton when I first bought it. I haven't even used any heavy-duty applications on it. This machine has been pampered and the 1 GIG ram and 160 GB HD were stock from the Apple store and installed by a genius since I would never touch a machine. I guess my question is would anyone have any interest in this machine and what type of price would this command on eBay?

  • 1 GHz eMac - slot over CD-Rom drive - is it a standard cardbus slot?

I own a 1 GHz eMac. When I purchased it, I also purchased an Airport Extreme card which is installed in the slot directly over the CD-Rom drive. See this quicktime movie to see where the slot is:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/html/emac/emac-airport.mov.html
Is this a standard cardbus slot?
I don't connect to my home network wirelessly so I don't use the airport card and since there will shortly be a new Video iPod in the family I'm wondering if I can remove the airport card and put a USB 2.0 cardbus card in there instead.
The CD-ROM door is removed easily enough and I don't care about the looks so much (maybe a sin in AppleLand so please forgive me).
Anyone know for sure? I even looked in the most recent MacTracker and it's not clear whether it's a standard cardbus slot or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sorry but no, it is not a standard slot of any type. The Airport and Airport Extreme slots are proprietary to Apple and only work with Airport/Airport Extreme cards.

  • Airport extreme for my 1 GHz eMac?

My eMac is a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 purchased November 2003. Can I put an airport extreme card in it? If I must use an airport card, is there a specific card and does anyone know a good vendor?

    Hello roam,
I just checked this thread because it's exactly what I'm working on now: getting my eMac (1 Ghz, ATi, combo drive, 10.3.9) connected using Airport Extreme.
I bought AE & a card for the eMac from the new Apple Store. But when I read the "Minimum Requirements" section of the instructions, it says that the eMac has to be running 10.4.x. Do you know if that's true?
BTW - I have installed the card which they gave me and it shows up on the eMac's System Profile. But when I checked using the "existing" Airport Utility, the app could not find the card. Could this be because of the need to upgrade to 10.4.x?
I should explain: I want the eMac on a wireless connection because I have it in one room and have my new Mac Pro connected (at the moment) directly to my DSL modem in the next room.
If I understand the setup directions, the Mac Pro can still be connected via Cat 5 Ethernet cable to the AE base station (which in turn is connected by Ethernet cable to the DSL modem). I just wanted to avoid the (possibly) unnecessary cost (of the OS upgrade) and will absorb the added cost of another Ethernet cable.
    Any advice? Thanks.

  • Upgadeability of a 1.42 GHz eMac

I was wondering if anyone knows what the largest hard drive is that i can put into my emac
    G4 1.42 GHz
    1 GB Ram
    160 GB HD
    Super Drive

Hi, you may be limited to what hard drive you can install internally according to this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
The eMac only supports Parallel IDE hard drives, and not SATA hard drives for internal drives, and the jumper configuration should match what is inside the machine. The installation should be left to an authorized repair center. If the above article 86178 article doesn't apply to you, yes a 500 GB Parallel ATA drive would work.

  • Retail Tiger Installer disk unrecognized by 1 Ghz Emac

Hi. I am trying to install a retail version of OSX Tiger onto a Emac 1 Ghz Power PC G4, osx version 10.3.9.
My problem is that while my superdrive reads other dvds and audio cds, it does not recognize the installer disk at all. Once injected, the computer slowly scans the disk and it appears that it reads little to nothing. The disk icon never appears on the screen. I have recently repaired disk permissions and used diskwarrior's manual diagnostics test on the hard drive.
    Any Ideas?

Are you refering to the Tiger Install disc in the singular? Tiger comes on a DVD, not CD, unless you can call Appl Store and talk them into letting you use the CD exchange program that expired a while back to exchange the DVD for a set of CDs. Are you sure you have a Combo or Super drive that can read DVDs? Some early Mac models (your profile shows 10.2.x) came with CD-RW drives that don't read DVDs. You can check in the Hardware section of Apple System Profiler if your optical drive will work with DVDs. Will you Mac recognize other DVDs?

  • 1.25 GHz eMac (ATI graphics)

How does Tiger run with the previous generations of eMac...the one with 32 MHz of video ram?

We have had no problems with the 800MHz, 1GHz & 1.25GHz models. Goes in great & runs great.
We have had problems with the old 700MHz model, however, the HD reports itself 'busy' and NetRestore aborts the image restore process. Have not found a workaround yet.

  • I think my CD drive is dead-can I hook up an external CD drive to my Emac?

when I insert a CD I hear a couple of clicking type sounds and then the disk ejects. DVD's are playing fine. I tried repairing the disk and booting from one of my install CD's and it didn't work.
    Thanks

DVDs and CSs operate at different wavelengths and all drives on the market use separate LED lasers for the DVD and CD functions. It's not uncommon for one LED to fail while the other still operates. Before replacing the drive, through, try running a CD lens cleaner through the drive for a few passes. DVD and CD LEDs in all cases I'm aware of run through different lenses, so it's possible your drive's CD lens has enough grime on it to prevent it from working while the DVD lens is still relatively clear.
If that doesn't fix the problem, then it's easy to attach an external optical drive and use that. Go with Firewire; while your 1.25 GHz eMac has USB 2.0, USB driver support is more problematic while Firewire support is pretty solid. A Firewire drive will also allow you to use the external drive as a boot device per Startup Manager: Select a Startup Volume.
OS X 10.3 and later will support disc burning to an external drive from the Finder, so you don't even need additional software such as Toast (although an optical drive bundled with Toast will give you more control over disc burning than what's built into the Finder).

  • Using an eMac as a kitchen TV?

I just bought a used 1.25 GHz eMac for the kitchen and I was wondering if it's reasonable to use it, with the appropriate peripheral solution, as a kitchen TV? We have DirecTV satellite and I've been looking at the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid device, but I wonder how usable is it as a TV, how responsive would the menus be etc and how good is the picture?
It'd be nice to have an all-in-one device in the kitchen like the eMac, that could do TV and movies, be rugged, with a nice picture and be a kitchen computer too!
    Thanks!

does anyone else have any views / experience with eyeTV and an eMac? I want to do pretty much the same as the original poster, except for a kids' playroom.
I need a version of the EyeTV software / hardware that will work with a 1GHZ PowerPC G4 running OS X 10.3.9. It has to receive Freeview...I'm not really bothered about all the iPod compatability functions because I don't have a video iPod. I'm imagining just putting it between an external ariel and the USB port.
So does anyone know whether this is possible with this operating system, and whether it will be just as good as watching a normal TV (or whether there are screen resolution issues etc)?

  • EMac - keeps freezing.

Hi, im new to this forum. im 15, and i have an eMac (MAC OSX 10.3.9.)
My computer, freezes every like 10 minutes, it seems to freeze alot when im in Adobe Photoshop CS2, and when im on Safari, or even in general, it just freezes so much. The funny thing is I just reformatted my computer with a hardrive, and my computer will NOT stop. I have to keep turning it off, then turning it on. Im about to break it, its frustrating me very much. When i go to software update, i try to download like security, and new versions of MAC OSX, and my computer starts to download it, then it just freezes. Should i bring it to the Apple Store? Please help me :[?

Jason's tip on the repiar extension for 1.25 GHz eMacs is the first thing to check, followed if indicated by contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to arrange the repair.
Should your eMac not fall into the range of those known to be affected by the bad capacitor problem, there are a few other things you can try.
Open Disk Utility and check the drive's SMART status at the bottom of the window. It should read "verified"; anything else indicates a drive problem. You can boot from the OS X Install disc to run Repair Disk as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck. If that reports making repairs, repeat Repair Disk until it delivers a clean bill of health.
Try disconnecting all third-party peripherals and then Start Up in Safe Mode and see if stability returns. If it does, that suggests a problem with a third-party kernel extension. Post back if that troubleshooting step works for you and we can give you suggestions on how to find the offending extension.
If you normally shut down an OS X Mac overnight or leave it in system sleep, the cron maintenance tasks cannot run in their nominal 3 am timeframe. (Display-only sleep allows the maintenance tasks to run). You can leave the Mac in display-only sleep a weekend or two a month; you can manually Force Background Maintenance; or you can use a third-party utility such as OnyX to run the maintenance. Note that any system utility you use must be compatible with the OS version (e.g., use the Panther version of OnyX with 10.3.x).
If you've updated to 10.3.9 via Software Update, it may help to download and run the stand-alone Mac OS X Combo Update 10.3.9, runnig Disk Utility> Repair Permissions as a precaution before and after.

  • EMac Freeze still

I find myself in the same boat as those using these 1.25 Ghz eMac's, and getting very frustrated.
I find this to be quite a puzzler, have tried all sensible propsects to bring this to a conclusion.Yes, it started with the appearence of "the unrepairable permissions". Even if it involves changing the logic board.... I'm in this for the distance. Everybody that I 've seen responding have reported that this trouble BEGAN approx. 1 month ago. Me too. The January sotware update seems to have instigated this trouble. My computing world was on quite an even keel until THAT update was made. NO freezing = smooth running OS X.3.9 right up to that point.
Have attempted MANY suggested "work-arounds". Ran Apps to isolate = to no avail!! (all is well) Ran applejack, ran memtest. Update ATI driver
Yes, it does appear to get better just after running the radeon ATI updater. But, it still froze while saving a edit to a 3 meg AIFF file with SoundStudio this morning.
I'll be watching the discussions for the days to come, it sure looks as if there are quite a few folks out there in this mess.........

I've noticed that some one has said the answer has been found....
in the "using your eMac" forum area, the star is applied to the posting about the freezing video display.... ???
So, what ? is it some kind of general consensus that the logic board replacement must be what the answer is?
I've read thru all the responses several times, I can only assume that this is what somebody figured is the reason and said "yep, there's the answer !"
I guess all I can do is , STILL, register my complaint with Apple and keep hoping.
The freezing up has improved dramatically after udating the ATI Radeon video (drivers?)....crap
Where as I would freeze several (20 to 30 times) daily, today I have had only 2 happen today. (so, far) I'll be checking the Olympics this evening, we'll see what happens then.

  • EMac having issues waking from sleep

I used to own a 1 gig eMac. I never had an issue with it, now that I have sold it however, it's having this issue waking from sleep. The only way to get it back is to power it down by holding the power button.
When I had it, I had Panther running on it's main drive and Tiger running on a firewire drive. Regardless though, I can't see that being the issue (well I guess I can ... I don't want to believe it, but I guess I can). Now it's running Tiger on the 80 gig main drive. When he goes to wake it, the drive spins up but the screen stays dark, but if he holds the power button down it works fine. Go figure?
Has anybody else had this issue. All of the software updates were and have been done since. Though I don't recall exactly which version of Tiger he's on but I know he's on the most recent. Any input will be greatly appreciated of course.
I don't know that the Apple Hardware Test would indicate if a hard drive was about to fail either would it?
    Regards
    Mike

I think what that post was trying to express is that there's often a lag between the release of new Mac hardware and the release of retail OS X Install discs that incorporate all the new drivers that go with the new hardware. That is, if you have a retail OS X disc that was pressed in January, it likely will give poor results if you use it to restore a Mac released in September. If you look at the Software section of System Profiler, after the OS X numerical version you'll find a build number in parentheses; "Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)", say. While you almost always hear the "don't use an earlier version of the OS on your new Mac" warning expressed in terms of the numerical OS X version, it's really the build number that matters. It's safe to say that you can use a retail OS X install disc on a Mac that predates the release of that OS X disc.
Since the 1.0 GHz eMac shipped with Panther 10.3, any retail 10.4 disc will work with it. So on one hand, good news: your buyer doesn't face the fun of doing a reinstall of the OS, but bad news, that leaves the question of why it isn't waking from sleep.
There could be a remote chance that the wireless mouse is involved, although it's unlikely and I've never had such problems with any of the Logitech mice I've used through the years. If you have the LCC (Logitech Control Center) software installed (it'll show up in System Preferences -> Other when using View by Categories) from the CD that came with the mice, you can compare it with the current version 2.6 and possibly upgrade. I'd also check that the mouse's battery is fresh.
You might get a better clue as to what's going on by opening Applications -> Utilities -> Console, select system.log, and look for events timestamped around the time the eMac was put to sleep and again at the it was attempted to wake it. You might find something like:
    AFPSleepWakeHandler: going to sleep
    System Sleep
Enabling XMM register save/restore and SSE/SSE2 opcodes
Followed, upon waking the computer, by:
    Started CPU 01
IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep
    System Wake
    USB caused wake event (EHCI)
AppleYukon2 - en0 link active, 100-Mbit, full duplex, flow control disabled port 0
    kernel[0]: AFPSleepWakeHandler: waking up
mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en0 (xxx.xxx.xxx.xx); delaying packets by 5 seconds
    configd[67]: posting notification com.apple.system.config.network_change
    lookupd[2678]: lookupd (version 369.6) starting - Wed Aug 20 08:06:57 2008
Some of the calls will depend on whether the Mac is on a network, managed remotely, etc. What you want to look for are any errors or suspicious messages close to the AFPSleepWakeHandler call, around either the System Sleep or System Wake lines.

  • Restoring OS 10.1.4, 9.2.2 onto an eMac.

Hi, I have recently bought an eMac to use as an office machine but I am having trouble getting it to take the restore disks. It seems to be working fine with the later OS (10.5.6) but I want to be able to use it with both classic and OSX systems. Is there any particular trick to get my machine to accept the restore CDs?
    Thanks, Pete.

Allan is correct. Mac OS X 10.5 dropped support for Classic. Your options are:
    A.1. Clone your data.
    A.2. Partition your drive.
A.3. Install 10.4.11 or earlier and install Classic from your restore discs, and recover from the clone your 10.5 data assuming it will fit in a smaller partition.
B.1. Buy a Firewire bootable hard drive.
B.2. Install 10.4.11 or earlier and install Classic from your restore discs on the external Firewire drive.
C.1. If you have an 800 or 700 Mhz eMac, or one of these 1 Ghz eMacs:
    M8950LL/A
C.2 Clone your internal hard drive.
C.3 Reformat your internal drive with Mac OS 9 drivers with these instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75275
    C.4 Recover from the clone.
C.5 Install Mac OS 9 from the restore discs with these directions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
C.6 Boot from Mac OS 9 on the machine with the Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk. When in Mac OS 9 and you are finished with it and want to go back to Mac OS X, select Apple menu -> Control Panels -> Startup Disk and select Mac OS X.
If your restore discs are damaged unfortunately you will be stuck without Mac OS 9 access at all until you can find the ones that definitively came with your model and vintage eMac.

  • IMovie '09 on an eMac!

Almost two weeks ago I got my 1.42 GHz eMac to replace my dead 1.0 GHz model, and one of the things I did with this new one was take advantage of the graphics card being able to support Core Image by following this iMovie '09 hack:
    http://broadcast.oreilly.com/2009/09...erbook-g4.html
So far, iMovie '09 is fully functional on my 1.42 Ghz G4 eMac. It does occasionally slow down a bit, but otherwise it works just like it's supposed to, almost as if I were running it on an Intel-based Mac!
I decided to give this a try, having used iMovie '09 at my college's TV studio on the new 24" iMacs we got last summer. I haven't used iMovie '08 that much (I've toyed around with it a bit at an Apple Store), but in some ways iMovie '09 is better than iMovie HD 6 in terms of editing and features (like the ability to select only parts of clips from the event browser to edit in the project, the YouTube uploader, the real-time transitions and effects, better color correction, picture-in-picture and greenscreen already included, etc.), and in a few ways it isn't (like the lack of some fancy video effects, the funky audio editing, not as good title control).
    Any comments?

YES!  Thanks for reminding me.  It's been a long time since I tried this and I'd forgotten I had to use Firewire.  Thank you very much!

  • Installing classic on 1.25 GHz

I just picked up a 1.25 GHz eMac yesterday to run classic but it came with no CD's and a fresh install of tiger. I thought that I could use the Mac OS 9 installation CD's that came with my friends Powermac 997 MHz quicksilver, but it isn't letting me boot off of that CD. So I was wondering how to install it with this disk, if possible?

    G'day Brannyth,
Unlike previous eMacs, the 1.25GHz could not boot from OS 9. It needs at least OS 10.3. So that's why you can't boot from the System 9 disk.
Looking around... the only way I can find to instal classic is using the original system discs that came with the computer...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2431?viewlocale=en_US
I believe you can "drag and drop" copy the classic OS (System Folder), if you had access to one that's already installed somewhere else, though it may not have the relevant machine-specific files for an eMac...
Sorry, not sure what else to suggest. Either hunt down the eMac system discs (there is 3 of them, I think Classic is part of Disc 2)... or grab a Mac that can boot from OS 9, and them try use firewire to mount the eMac on it and do the instal...
Tex beat me on the draw!
