Yep, a whole folder! How do I get it back? MBP OSX 10.4.10.
Is there an easy way or do I need some data recovery software, and if so , what's the free-est?

They don't go into the Trash. Unless you have a backup prior to the deletion time it's gone.

  • I accidentally deleted my bookmarks.

I accidentally deleted my bookmarks and I have no backup. Can I recover them?

    If it happens again:
If you have accidentally removed bookmarks then use "Organize > Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) to get them back.<br />
The Organize button is the first of the three buttons next to the Back and Forward buttons on the toolbar in the Library (Bookmarks Manager).<br />
That only works if you haven't closed Firefox.<br />
If it didn't work then you can restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
*Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore
This will replace all current bookmarks and you lose bookmarks that were added since that backup was created.

I accidentally deleted the documents folder (and its contents) from my ibook hard drive. Can I recover it?

It takes a really expensive data recovery service to get back things that have been deleted.
You could try Data Rescue 3, if you're desperate to get the documents back.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    System Requirements:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_sysreq.php
If you want to try this, stop using the iBook immediately, and wait until you get the recovery software because every time you save something to your hard drive (even if it's only a link in your browser history), you risk overwriting the files you deleted.

  • HELP! I Accidentally deleted the iTunes folder in the My Music folder

HELP! I Accidentally deleted the iTunes folder in the My Music folder so I lost the two files
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
As I understand it, these files contain all the play counts, ratings, etc. and I've spent weeks getting this info the way I want it and don't want to lose it.
I have all my mp3 files on my desktop computer HD under a seperate directories, so I'm not worried about loosig origninal music files. I don't have iTunes copying the files when I add them to the library and I do have "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checked. I have not relocated any of the original music files.
I have not auto synced my iPod, and I can open the iPod in iTunes and all my songs, with play counts, ratings, etc. are there. I just want to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. back to my PC.
Is there any way to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. from the data on the iPod and recreate the .itl & .xml files on my PC? I see there are many files on the iPod two of which look promising "iTunesDB" & "iTunesPlaylists".
Can someone please tell my how to recreate just the .itl & .xml files by using the info on the iPod itself? Again, I have not relocated or lost any of the original music files, I just want to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. back that are stored in the .itl file.
I really don't want to have a software utility copy the info over as then I will have two copies of my music files and I've spent a lot of time organizing and naming the mp3 files just the way I want (not the way iTunes wants).
I've read many posts and it seems many have screwed up recovery by trying things without clear direction.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Try some of the more robust recovery/trnsfer programs. Several can recover the playlists, and metadata of the songs on the iPod. Do some reading on the respective websites.
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…

    PodUtil Software
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

  • System won't boot after accidentally deleting /private/var/folder

My Macbook Air is running OS 10.9 Mavericks, and I accidentally deleted the /var folder after seeing it taking lots of GB's from my storage.
Safari, Mail and a lot of applications f'ed up itself, like safari saying it couldn't connect to the folder.
I tried to put those folders back, and it gave me an Unauthorized Caller alert. I tried doing it again, and the folders froze, but I can still move my mouse. I restarted my computer by holding power 7 seconds, and tried to restart.
Somehow, I saw the grey Apple logo startup screen, heard that startup chime, and 10 seconds later, it shut down. I tried doing it again many times, but to no avail.

So here's my problem. I'm using intel iMac and yesterday my Mac didn't boot( grey screen etc). I thought that it was because I used force shutdown. I used (option-cmd-r-p) to reset and after that, Mac booted up into some kind of "first time startup screen"... So I used installation DVD and restored my previous backup of the system by using the TM. After that the Mac booted and now all I get is folder with a question mark? Now what....?
your profile suggests that you are running Tiger. if that is so, you shouldn't even be able to use time machine (introduced with Leo).
    can you please clarify ...

Help I have accidentally deleted the var folder on my mac and now it won't start up what should I do?

/var is a hidden folder, so you mustn't remove the folder.
The only solution is to reinstall OS X. If you have OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, use OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Hold Command and R keys while your MacBook is starting and reinstall OS X. You won't lose anything. If you have a backup, you can restore it after starting in OS X Recovery instead of reinstalling Mac OS X, so you will save a lot of time

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How to delete mobile bookmarks folder?

I have tried sync, but don't want it. First I unchecked all the boxes so nothing syncs, then I deactivated my computer, and then I deleted my sync account. But there is STILL a mobile bookmarks folder in my Firefox which I can't delete. How to get rid of this?

  • Need to delete unsorted bookmarks folder

FF3 brought us the "unsorted bookmarks" and associated star in the bar fail. I got rid of the start using userchrome.css file. I need to DELETE the "unsorted bookmarks" folder permanently and forever. If this cannot be done it should be added to FF4 ASAP. When xmarks syncs with ie8 etc this stupid "unsorted bookmarks" folder keeps replicating and I NEVER use it!!!!!!!

    I have the same problem.
I would like to completely eliminate the 'Unsorted Bookmarks' folder in all instances and cases.
I would also like for my "bookmarks menu" folder to be my default folder when I double-click the yellow star.
gareasy's solution removes the folder from the bookmarks menu only, and does not effect the default folder that bookmarks are saved into.
cor-el's solution had no effect at all.
I know there is some genius out there that has a solution.
    Heeeeeeelp!
(I see many people have this same problem too.)
    Thanks in advance.

  • I accidentally deleted a Photostream folder on my mac, but it still appears on my iPad. Is there anyway I can restore in on my mac?

I have a Photostream folder of my son, that has 3 other members, where I share photos with my family. Recently I have not been able to add any pictures to it and whilst trying to sort the problem I accidentally deleted it from iPhoto on my mac. It still appears on my iPad and I can add new pictures but they don'y show up in any of the the 3 other members photo stream. So does anyone know how I can a, restore the folder to iPhoto on my Mac and b, add pictures so that they appear in all members photosteams?
    Thanks

  • I accidentally deleted user template folder

Soooo, I accidentally deleted the locked User Template folder in the Mac Library. Yes, I am an idiot. Not sure why. I unlocked it thinking it was something for my Adobe Photoshop that I recently got rid of and I'm trying to free up space on my computer.
It hasn't effected my computer YET, but I am a little afraid to turn the computer off.
What do I need to do?
    I have a 10.7 Mac OS X Lion. It's a Macbook Air, 11', Mid-2011.

Since applications are much smaller generally then the data is their deletion is usually not very productive. A far more productive way is to delete data files such as movies, videos, music and photos.
How much free space do you currently have on your disk drive?
