I accidentally deleted a file

HELP!!!! is there really no way to recover a folder after i emptied the trash.

Hi, Betsy. Welcome to the Discussions.
See my "Data Recovery" FAQ for comprehensive advice that may help you with this problem.
To minimize the possibility of this happening in the future, it is critically important that you consider implementing a comprehensive "Backup and Recovery" solution. Computing without a backup and recovery solution is like driving without auto insurance. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
Good luck!

  • I accidentally deleted some files from iCloud, how do I recover the files if I do not have other backup or in time machine

I accidentally deleted some files from iCloud, how do I recover the files if I do not have other backup or in time machine

    You don't.

  • Are there any apps that I can purchase that will recover accidentally deleted prproj files on a Mac?

What app do I use to recover accidentally deleted prproj files on a Mac?

Umm... unless you can find an app that will rebuild data off of your hard disc by identifying sectors and re-writing document headers, you're out of luck... There is no app that I'm aware of for recovering deleted Project files. If it was on a RAID that failed, I've got a recommendation for you... otherwise, I think you're headed for some long, hard work rebuilding your project.

  • AAUGHH!!! Accidentally deleted archive files on external hard drive!!

In trying to back up important archive files from one external hard drive to another, I accidentally deleted them!! Here's how it happened: A folder in XHD1 contained archive files from the past four years. I wanted to copy them to XHD2. But instead of dragging the Archive folder from XHD1 to XHD2, I accidentally dragged the Archive folder (which only contained 1 file) from XHD2 to XHD1. So, I now have two Archive folders on each XHD, both containing only 1 file instead of hundreds of important archive files. So far I've tried Time Machine (no luck, it's only set up for my computer), and I've tried "Undo Copy of Archive" under Edit in the Finder menu. Is there any other way to retrieve those files? I haven't emptied Trash, if that means anything. Please, HELP

situations like this are why you should back up all your data, not just the main drive. the only way you can maybe recover those files now is by using data recovery software like [Data rescue II|http://www.searchbling.net/?c=91&q=datarescueII] or [FileSalvage|http://www.searchbling.net/?c=91&q=filesalvage]. you should do it asap to maximize the chance of successful recovery.

  • Accidentally deleted domain files trying to create a second site...

This is my first post so please be merciful
I used the freeware iWebsites (that some of you know) and I was attempting to create another website with a different domain name for our church. I accidentally deleted the domain files BUT not before I published a backup to my desktop.
Now when you type the address:
    http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/
You get the template for the church site:
    http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/New%20Site/Welcome.html
But this is the one I want to keep for my business:
    http://web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/iWeb/Site/Welcome.html
    So how do:
    1. I get the first address to go back to my third address.
    2. Create a new web.mac.com address for my church
    3. I guess also to delete that second address?
Thank you very much for taking the time to help.

    So how do:
    1. I get the first address to go back to my third address.
Modify the index.html file on the .Mac server. First, navigate to your iDisk files using the Go menu in Finder, and drag the index.html file to your desktop so that it is copied there.
    Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Web/Sites/index.html
Make a folder and place this copy inside for safekeeping. If anything goes wrong you can put it back on the iDisk.
Launch your Text Edit.app, and under preferences, in Text Edit, check the box for Ignore rich text commands in HTML files.
Now choose File/Open/iDisk/Web/Sites/index.html. You should see this (or something very close to it) in a Text Edit window:
You will change it to this:
Note that not very much changed here...just the name of the site in the url. Your old site is simply named, Site, in your iWeb application. You are just changing the index.html file to point to that site versus the New Site. So really, all you will do here is delete the word New in the index.html file. Now, File/Save. Not Save As...; just File/Save. Now your short .Mac url (web.mac.com/elementpicturesmaui/) should point to the correct site.
    2. Create a new web.mac.com address for my church
You will need to buy a Domain name and forward it to your web.mac.com address; you could also use the .Mac hosting via a cname alias if you want. Purchase your Domain name from a registrar like Yahoo or GoDaddy.
    3. I guess also to delete that second address?
You can delete these files from your iDisk by simply dragging them to the trash.

  • I have accidentally deleted a file in IPhoto and now it doesn't work.  I have tried doing a restore and that quits unexpectedly...HELP!

At my wits end.  I have tried to do two restores from recent back ups and neither work.  I can't even remember what I was trying to do now originally.  I wanted to get all my photos off my mac onto a external hard drive.  In trying to locate where the photos were being stored not the computer, Ive inadvertently deleted a file, or that I think Ive done because iPhoto isn't working now. Please help! Thank you in anticipation.

Although iPhoto 9.5.1 will work with Yosemite you should go to the App Store and upgrade to 9.6.
When opening IPHOTO I get the question "Which photo library do you want to use"
How many libraries do you see in that window?
I am guessing that I am running out of hard drive now which is why my restore didn't work????
It's recommended that one should maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space to help assure optimum system and application performance. Control (right) - click on your boot drive icon and select Get Info from the contextual menu.
The Info window will tell you how much free space you have on your drive.
As for the external HD you're going to purchase be sure you format it OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored.
An excellent source for EHDs is otherworldcomputing.com. Great quality hardware and excellent customer support.

  • I accidentally deleted some files in my Notes on my Iphone 4s, is there a way to retrieve them?

I was trying to copy and paste in my Notes and accidentally deleted them after highlighting. Is there a way to retrieve them???? I assume that once you delete them on one device, it deletes them in the cloud and other devices because they are not there.

If you use iCloud then use the restore feature. If you backed up to your computer then restore from there. However if   you did not backup prior to erasing the notes, then they're gone.

  • Accidentally deleted some files.

I was installing a program and managed to accidentally delete everything in my /usr/local/bin directory. Is it possible somehow to restore all the default programs that were in there?

You could always run your installer DVD, do an "archive and install" preserving your user settings, then apply the 10.5.6 combo update. If you had any customizations in the unix part of the previous system (other than in /usr/local/bin) you can just copy or move them over from the Previous Systems folder.

  • Deleting Playlist accidentally deleted physical files

Recently, I deleted a playlist that contained about 30 albums of music (all the songs on each album).  At the time I thought I had said to keep the files, but evidently I messed up because the files are all gone.  Since then I have purchased additional music so my iTunes library is different and I don't think I should just restore from a backup that I made at the end of September.  However when I look at the total number of files in the end of September backup, there are several hundred more files than my most recent backup on 10/26.  So my question is, how can I selectively restore only the Albums that were inadvertently deleted?  Can I just go to the backup and copy the subdirectories of the Artists that were deleted into my current library???  If I do that, how does the indexing get updated?

At the time I thought I had said to keep the files, but evidently I messed up because the files are all gone.
Cliff - You were really playing with fire!  For future reference, if you want to delete a playlist, right click the playlist name and choose Delete.  That will remove the playlist, but all its tracks will remain in your library (and in any other playlist they are in). It will not even ask you about deleting the files.
Anyway, glad it had a happy ending.

why you had these ? because of deletion of datafile, oracle can not open database properly. to open a database oracle must be sure that everything is ok!

Thank you very much for the reply.
I've executed above commands and got below error.

  • Accidentally deleted old files

I deleted my old song files because I moved them all to Itunes and now they are mpeg 4's which won't play. How do I convert them back to mp3's without right-clicking each song?

"and now they are mpeg 4's which won't play."
Won't play where? Mp4 is AAC format which is both iTunes and iPod compatible.
If you want to convert them, see this.
How to convert a song to a different format using iTunes.
You can highlight all your library at once by using the edit/select all option in iTunes.

I accidently delete my backup file of my iphone in my mac with Lion OS. It includes very important contact info. Please kindly provide me the solution to recover my backup. Very very appreciate.

Well if you manually deleted it from the file system, it might be in the trash? Otherwise, I don't know if there is a way to recover one.

  • As I was cleaning up my mac, I accidentally deleted some files obviously vital for iPhoto. I want to download the new version, but am not sure I can access my photos. Should I download the new version or restore the old one somehow?

I know the files were vital to iPhoto because I can't open it now. Can you restore these files?

Probablhy not unless you know exactly what needs to be restored
You need to restore the entire library from your backup before these files were deleted - it is not adviseable to upgrade the iPhoto application until you resolve your iphoto library problem
In the future always remember the number one rule of iPhoto - NEVER make and changes of any sort to the structrue or content of the iPhoto library

  • What files are in the "All My Files" folder in an iMAC? I accidentally deleted all files in this folder. Any way to recover them?

Please help. I need to recover some important files.

    Matt Clifton wrote:
I've had good luck with Prosoft's Data Rescue. You can download a trial to see what files are recoverable, and then purchase the software to recover. You will need an external drive to recover the files to.
    Matt
And what ever you do don't use that hard drive AT ALL until you get your files back, if that's even possible. Even though the files may still be there on your hard drive the file system sees the space they occupy as availble to write to. And OS X WILL overwrite those files if you use the drive in any way.

  • Accidentally deleted Quicktime files now quicktime, or imovie won't open

    Hi,
My quicktime was not working properly so I thought I could remove all the quicktime files to trash and try to download another one from the apple website. But, when I do so it says I have Quicktime X already installed. But, when I try to open programs with Quicktime it just gives me an error message and closes. I also, cannot open other programs that use QuickTime such as iMovie. It says " The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install. " Where do I get these components to download again?

" Where do I get these components to download again?
From your install disc. You will need to custom install Quicktime which should be included either inside the bundled software folder or the Applications folder.
If you cannot locate, you will need to use Pacifist.
Just launch the installer and click the Continue buttons until you reach the _Custom Install_ screen. Click the triangle next to Applications, click the box next to the application you want to custom install, and click the Install button to install the application.
If you’d like to reinstall applications that aren’t offered in the Custom Install screen—applications in the Utilities folder or in the Bundled Software folder for example—you can use Pacifist - http://www.charlessoft.com/
    *To use Pacifist:*
Insert your Mac OS X Installer disc. Download Pacifist and launch it. In the window that appears click the Open Apple Install Discs button. A window will appear offering you the single choice to look at the OSInstall package. Click OK.
Pacifist will churn away for a bit and then you’ll see a window titled OSInstall.mpkg. In this window you can dig down through the hierarchy of folders to find what you seek or you can enter the name of what you’re after in the Find field and press Return. A drawer appears that lists the names of matching files.
To install an item click the Install button in the upper-left corner of the window. You’ll be prompted for your administrator’s password. Enter it, click OK, and the item will be installed into its proper location on your Mac’s hard drive.
