i accidentally deleted all the content on messages. how do i get it back without getting it from a backed up hard drive?

OK, the Mac OSX install menu came up. I'll let you know how it turns out. If it works you just saved me $50.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Is there some way for me to post kudos for you?
Please let me know.   :- )

    Can somebody try and replicate?
Reimporting by deleting the Envelope Index seems to not import everything correctly either...

This happened to me recently, deleting 8,000 messages stored on the local Inbox for one of my POP accounts. I posted a help query and nobody rose to the occasion. Is it really true that Rebuild, without so much as a warning, will permanently eradicate stored emails, essentially doing something as radical as emptying the trash, with its warning that it's not undoable? If you have to rely upon Time Machine to recover those emails, surely this is a serious action? Did you get any help further on your query?

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

If I have to format an external hard drive to make it Mac compatible, will it delete all the content in the external hard drive?

As others have said, the answer to your question is a big YES.  Formatting a drive will delete everything!
To keep your data, yet reformat the drive for optimal Mac compatibility, you will need to:
    1) copy your files to a different hard drive (I would recommend two different locations if you value your data)
    2) repartition/format the external drive
    3) then copy the files back to the external.
You haven't given details but if you need the external to ONLY be compatible with the Mac (and no longer care if if can be read by Windows), then you will want to partition the drive using the GUID partition scheme, and format as the (HFS+) "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" filesystem.  You can do so using the built-in "Disk Utility" application on your Mac (in the Applications/Utilities directory).  Here are instructions:

If you need the drive to be compatible with both Mac and Windows computers then please post that so someone can recommend a solution for your specific needs.

  • My 160 g ipod classic wont synk past 4 gigs and when it gets to 4 gigs it erasis all the content a message unknown error occurd (13011)

my 160 g ipod classic will not sync past 4 gigs and when it gets to 4 gigs it erasis all the content a message unknown error occurd (13011) i have formated it with windows and restored it several times nothing works should i toss it and buy a new one or is it me doing somthing wrong

Thanks everyone, lots of good suggestions here.
I did briefly consider trying the idea of grouping smaller loads of playlists to upload, but I also noticed that each time I ejected then re-synched the iPod a few more gigs of music would upload.
So I just kept at it until most (nearly all) of my music made it onto the thing.
This seems like a really rudimentary thing for Apple to fix - but more fundamentally, this shouldn't happen at ALL. When they market a new product, having such a basic issue plague it seems very Microsoft-like.
Up to this point I've never been disappointed with anything Apple has ever done.
This issue is purely and simply bad design and slipshod programming. I hope they fix it in the extremely near future.
Thanks again for all your help and suggestions guys!
    Cheers

  • I accidentally deleted all the files inside Quicktime, and now when I try to import to iMovie it won't let me...how do I fix this?

What installer software package files? Could you tell me how to get there?
Afraid I'm not a mind reader. You have to download the installer packages from whatever source provides those installer packages. For instance, you would download the DivX installer package file from DivX. The Perian codec installer package would found at the Perian web site. QT "Pro" codec components installers may be include with older Motion or FCP Suite software or from the Apple site, etc., etc., etc. At this point all I know for sure is that that you have part of the DivX package installed and should reinstall the entire package if you plan to use it for anything.
Everyone's codec component configuration may be different depending on what codecs the need to use. Perhaps it would be easier if I provide an image showing the codec components installed on my Snow Leopard configured laptop:
This is a very basic set-up since I do most of my video work on my iMac which has FCP installed on it. In this case you can see:
    a) AC3MovieImport.component (Apple)
    b) AppleIntermediaCodec.component (Apple)
    c) AppleMPEG2Codec.component (Apple)
    d) Elgato Turbo.component (Elgato)
    e) EyeTV MPEG Support.component (Elgato)
    f) Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component (Telestream)
    g) Flip4Mac WMV Export.component (Telestream)
    h) Flip4Mac WMV Import.component (Telestream)
    i) Perian.component (Perian)
    j) x264Encoder.component (MacUpdate)
The first three codecs were installed by my System Installer w/iMovie package (i.e., pre-installed on system when purchased or added afterwards by iMovie). The Elgato codec installers came with with my Turbo H.264 and EyeTV hardware devices. (I you don't have such devices, then you don't needcan't use these codecs.) The WMV codecs were purchased from Telestream. The Perian codec was a free download from the Perian web site and is used for DivX, XviD, 3ivX, DTS, AC3, MKV, FLV, and other audio/video/file type support. (I.e., I don't use the DivX package.) The X.264 codec is a leftover from my old Leopard system and not really used much anymore since I now prefer using HandBrake GUI for most X.264 custom encodes.
At this point, would assume you need to rerun the Snow Leopard/iMovie Installer if you purchased the system with system pre-installed or purchased the it as a system upgrade. Another alternative would be to find another Snow Leopard OS platform and simply copy the missing Apple iMovie codecs from a working system to your non-working system. All other codecs are up to you. Only you know what third-party codecs were installed on your system. And if you don't remember, you will probably find out what you are missing every time you try to play a video containing an unsupported codec.
Since you seem to be very inexperienced here, you may wish to consider joining a local user group or seeking some one-on-one assistance from someone in your local area.

  • Deleted all the 2217 songs from itunes...

I, ofcourse, HAD to play with the music folder in my finder, and had to ACCIDENTLY delete all the songs.
So, i go into itunes and, as ever, hit 'play'...
    when, SUDDENLY..
Thank you thank you, no need for comments
itunes can' locate any of my songs. pathetic.
it happened few minutes ago, btw.
i never stood this calm after such a enourmous collapse..
However, i got them all BACKUPED on my ipod!!! THNX god such a thing was invented!!
But, what i thought that would be the smallest problemo, now is smth i can't figure out.
HOW to switch off the automatical update of my ipod, when i can't change any of my ipod settings if ipod isn't connected to the comp. and if i connect it, ipod will, ofcourse delete all the songs cause its on automaticly updating..
i was able to do that once..

    Hello,
You can't directly sync or drag music from your iPod to iTunes library.
If your iTunes is set for "Automatic" in "Preferences -> iPod" (the default setting), connecting your iPod to iTunes now would automatically delete all the content off your iPod. This action cannot be reversed.
Instead, connect your iPod to your computer. Get ready, and as soon as the iPod displays "do Not Disconnect" on the screen, begin to press and hold the Option and Command keys for 20-30 seconds, as iTunes loads up. This will prevent any auto-syncing from clearing the songs off your iPod.
    Now, onto the transferring.
You can have a third-party program do this copying for you; see a selection of them here:
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    I hope this helps you,
    -Kylene

I accidentally deleted all my husband's Mac mail and now it is also gone from his gmail account. How can I retrieve the deletd messages?

Did you also empty the trash can?   If you did not empty the trash, then likely mail moved the messages to the trash folder on GMAIL.
