I accidentally deleted both of my catalogs!

In my New Years' organizing spree today, I decided to split my Lightroom catalog into two separate catalogs. I didn't see an efficient way of doing this, so what I did was copy my entire catalog into a new catalog, and then I deleted (from disk) the ones that didn't belong in the respective catalog. After I deleted a few "catalog A" photos from catalog B, I double-checked catalog A to make sure I wasn't totally deleting them. . .only to later find out that I was only looking at a thumbnail. So now ALL of my photos are deleted, and I can't figure out how to restore them.
I used Time Machine to restore yesterday's version of Lightroom 4 lrcat. I created a new catalog--trying to start fresh--tried to import the photos from LR 4 lrcat. I have thumbnails, but on each it says "the file named x is offline or missing."
I also have a LR 3 catalog which houses the bulk of my years of photos since I just upgraded to LR4 a month or so ago. I tried restoring that from Time Machine as well but was unsuccessful in getting anything more than a picture that says "the file named x is offline or missing."
Although I am hopeful because I do use Time Machine, I do have a foreboding feeling because at some point when I deleted over 1000 images, I got a message that said that this action could not be undone because I was doing it to 1000+ images.
I am using LR 4.3. Using OS X 10.8.2.
I am using some RAW files, others from earlier years are JPGs.
Thanks, and I promise to learn how to do things the right way if only I can get my years of photos of my kids back!!!

I am just sitting down for another evening at trying to solve this problem.
The good news is I now have probably 90% of my images back in my catalog.
The bad news is a few seem to be missing--they happen to be newborn photos--and it will take some detective work to find them. The other bad news is I don't have any of my edits, and I only have some of my keywords. The other bad news is that yesterday while I was repeatedly trying to import catalogs into my new catalog where I was going to start fresh, that made my 500 gb external hard drive (where my Time Machine backs up) fill up. I bought a new one and plugged it in, but it told me that it deleted all backups prior to Jan. 2.
I was not aware of the "right click" put back option. Actually what I did was drag and drop the images from the Trash into a folder. Then I imported the images from the folder. If anyone can help me get my edits and keywords back, that would be great. Thanks.

In preferences turn on iTunes sharing in iTunes preferences and keep iTunes turned on in both accounts. Or better yet put the iTunes library on the main HD rather than in an account and set the location of the library to that location in iTunes preferences.

if you have a backup of your catalog you can do the following:
1. Backup your catalog first
2. Restore your backup catalog to some location
3. Open your current catalog and select "files->import from another catalog".
4. Select your backup catalog and your lost images. LR ask you if you want to overwrite the current settings or save them as a virtual copy.
As an alternativ you can open your backup catalog, select the "lost" images and save the development settings as xmp sidecar fiels (using ctrl-s). Then open your current catalog, seletct the images and use "Metadata->Read Metadata from files".

HELP! I Accidentally deleted the iTunes folder in the My Music folder so I lost the two files

iTunes Music Library.xml
As I understand it, these files contain all the play counts, ratings, etc. and I've spent weeks getting this info the way I want it and don't want to lose it.
I have all my mp3 files on my desktop computer HD under a seperate directories, so I'm not worried about loosig origninal music files. I don't have iTunes copying the files when I add them to the library and I do have "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checked. I have not relocated any of the original music files.
I have not auto synced my iPod, and I can open the iPod in iTunes and all my songs, with play counts, ratings, etc. are there. I just want to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. back to my PC.
Is there any way to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. from the data on the iPod and recreate the .itl & .xml files on my PC? I see there are many files on the iPod two of which look promising "iTunesDB" & "iTunesPlaylists".
Can someone please tell my how to recreate just the .itl & .xml files by using the info on the iPod itself? Again, I have not relocated or lost any of the original music files, I just want to get the playlists, play counts. ratings, catagories, etc. back that are stored in the .itl file.
I really don't want to have a software utility copy the info over as then I will have two copies of my music files and I've spent a lot of time organizing and naming the mp3 files just the way I want (not the way iTunes wants).
I've read many posts and it seems many have screwed up recovery by trying things without clear direction.

Try some of the more robust recovery/trnsfer programs. Several can recover the playlists, and metadata of the songs on the iPod. Do some reading on the respective websites.
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…

After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

Use Referenced Masters To Avoid Accidentally Deleting A Master Image File

If you use Managed images it is possible to delete the master file accidentally. If you delete versions of an image using File -> Delete Version and the version you are deleting is the last remaining version for that image, Aperture 3 will delete both the version and the master image. If you subsequently empty Aperture Trash and then System Trash that master image file is gone forever. In Aperture 3 there is no warning that you are about to delete a master image.
A workaround (although a weak workaround) is to use Referenced Image Masters. Then when you delete the last version which includes the master image from Aperture, you can uncheck the box "Move referenced file to system trash." and no master image file will be deleted. The downside to this workaround is that when you really want to delete a master image file, it must be done via Finder.
The best solution would be for Apple to fix this bug so that when you select "Delete Version" it only deletes the version image and reverts to the master image. That way the master image can only be delete via the command "Delete Master Image and All Versions."

There is no bug there.
I had some trouble wrapping my mind around the file-Master-Version-Image-(Preview) complex that flows, sand-like, through the entire working of Aperture. (I like a thing to be represented by itself and itself alone, and to exist in one place and one place alone. I was comfortable with the seeming precision of the location-based "file+path" metaphor for the existence of these virtual things. Aperture quite cleverly moves beyond that.) Two things helped me move forward:
- understanding the difference between Projects and Albums, and
- separating my Library into a storage area and an output area.
Projects are, for me, storage containers. (I have said elsewhere that the mis-naming of "Projects" is the single worst interface decision made in Aperture.) They have a privileged relationship with your Images: every Image must "live" in a Project, and "lives" in only one Project. It may help you to think of "Image+Project{Path}" as functionaly equivalent, within the Aperture Library, to the file directory "file+path" mentioned above.
Albums are, for me, output containers. I create Albums every time I know I will output a set of Images.
In practice, I work on Images in each. In general, I develop my digital captures in the Project that holds them (and I rigorously stick to "One Project = One shoot"), I create Versions and add them to Albums as needed for output (they are automatically made the Album Pick), and I tweak them for output and then output them from Albums.
You may be wondering (if you've read this far) -- "What has this got to do with deleting Masters?" A lot. Note the difference in the context-menu between a Version in a Project and a Version in an Album. The menu for the Album contains two delete commands: "Delete Version", and "Remove from Album". The Versions live in Projects, and only visit Albums. As Terence correctly points out, if you delete the last Version, your expectation should be that you are deleting that Image from your Library. My suggestion is that you adopt something similar to what I've set up, and delete Versions from ONLY Projects (never from Albums). This way you will never unknowingly delete the last Version (because Images can be in only one Project, and if you delete the last Version from that Project you know you are expunging that Image from your Library).

Accidentally deleting all my emails

I was deleting emails on my iPhone, I don't know what happened, it seems that I accidentally deleted every emails on my inbox. All my emails in the past couple of years are gone.
Even when I come home to my Mac, they are also deleted from the inbox on my Mac.
What can I do to recover them? I have set up Mail on both my iPhone and Mac to only delete deleted emails after 1 month, is there a way to recover them?

Have you checked, on your Mac. the trash folders (email program first, the mac one then) ?
If mail deletes on iPhone are synced with your home mac, without the need of any sync on your side, it means your email account is most likely IMAP. To recover them, ask your email provider helpdesk, it may happen they keep a daily backup and can restore your mailbox status.

Geotagged a folder of ~200 photos then accidentally deleted folder. How to recover geotagging data?

I had a folder of around 200 photos that I imported into Lightroom (Version 3.6) and manually geotagged using Lightroom with Jeffrey Friedl's Geoencoding Support Plug-in. This took several hours of work in Google Maps, determining where each photo was taken then individually labeling each photo with the exact GPS coordinates in Lightroom, so it was pretty annoying when I realized that I accidentally deleted that folder earlier this week in an attempt to free up some space on an external hard drive.
I *do* have two back-ups of the same photos that were in that folder, however -- one on another external hard drive and one on a laptop -- but the photos in those folders are untagged and don't have any of the geotagging data that I manually applied to the ones in the other (now deleted) folder in Lightroom.
When I go into Lightroom now and look at Previous Import it shows thumbnails of all the deleted images along with the text "The file named (imagename.jpg) is offline or missing." However, in the Metadata panel on the right under "Geoencoding" I can still see the GPS coordinates I applied to each of the photos. I could individually write down each of those sets of coordinates along with the numbers of the images they belonged to and then manually type in all those coordinates for the 200+ photos in the folder with the untagged photos but it seems like there has to be an easier, faster way to do this. Is there?
Let me reiterate what I'm asking. I have 200 photos in Folder A on one external hard drive and the same exact 200 photos in Folder B on another external hard drive. I manually geotagged all of the photos in Folder A using Lightroom but then accidentally deleted Folder A. I still have all the same photos in Folder B but without the geotagging data. I can still view the geotagging data of the pictures that were in the now-deleted Folder A in Lightroom. Is there any way to transfer that data to the same pictures in Folder B, using Lightroom or any other program?

Outside LR, just copy Folder B back to the same place as Folder A was, and make sure it has the same name as Folder A. That's it. You haven't lost the metadata, including the geotagging info....that's all still in the catalog. But because you've deleted the folder outside Lightroom, you get the "File is offline or missing" messages (in fact if you look in the Folders Panel you should see Folder A listed also with a '?' mark).....so just putting the folder back in place should fix the issue.

If you haven't backed up to either your computer or iCloud, you can't get the message back. Let this be a lesson to either back your phone up to your computer or to iCloud (or both) regularly.

Accidentally deleted SQL Cert "ConfigMgr SQL Server Identification Certificate"

Hi,
a customer accidentally deleted the SQL Cert which is created automatically during the SCCM setup and now SCCM is not working.
Infrastructure:
SCCM 2012, CU1
SQL 2008 R2 SP1, CU7
Both Components are on the same box.
Is the certificate stored somewhere locally or what steps are necessary, that SCCM is working fine again.

I had the same problem (tried to copy the certificate from the server to my workstation to edit the reports, ended up moving it, loosing the private key in the process)
I was able to restore the private key using this article http://www.entrust.net/knowledge-base/technote.cfm?tn=7905
and the tool certutil –repairstore my <serial number>
just in case it happens to someone else.

Try deleting the mediadatabase.db3 file. You may also need to delete the thumbsdatabase.db3 file.

Note: Just renaming the mediadatabase.db3 file will not work. You must remove it. It will rebuild during relaunch.
Be patient on waiting for the effects palette to rebuild after restarting Elements. It may take around 10 minutes for the effects palette to rebuild and you should leave Elements to it's own devices during that time...no peeking.
If on Vista...most likely Windows 7 also...the file path goes through some hidden folder starting with "application data". You need to "Show hidden files and folders".

AAUGHH!!! Accidentally deleted archive files on external hard drive!!

In trying to back up important archive files from one external hard drive to another, I accidentally deleted them!! Here's how it happened: A folder in XHD1 contained archive files from the past four years. I wanted to copy them to XHD2. But instead of dragging the Archive folder from XHD1 to XHD2, I accidentally dragged the Archive folder (which only contained 1 file) from XHD2 to XHD1. So, I now have two Archive folders on each XHD, both containing only 1 file instead of hundreds of important archive files. So far I've tried Time Machine (no luck, it's only set up for my computer), and I've tried "Undo Copy of Archive" under Edit in the Finder menu. Is there any other way to retrieve those files? I haven't emptied Trash, if that means anything. Please, HELP

situations like this are why you should back up all your data, not just the main drive. the only way you can maybe recover those files now is by using data recovery software like [Data rescue II|http://www.searchbling.net/?c=91&q=datarescueII] or [FileSalvage|http://www.searchbling.net/?c=91&q=filesalvage]. you should do it asap to maximize the chance of successful recovery.

Protect object from accidental deletion

When I first tested this, I noticed that protect object from accidental deletion adds and explicit deny for everyone to delete and delete subtree for that object only. However, after testing a bit further, I noticed that if you create a protected OU inside
another protected OU, the parent OU will also gain the ACE deny Delete All Child Objects for the everyone group.
Now, why on earth would that be a good thing?? I know most of you will answer "because of accidental deletion" but if that's the case then the child OU should also have the same rights (and all the problems that are inherited with the having of
these rights).
A move of an object is a create on the target OU and a delete on the parent OU. This basically means that if you have:
An OU named "Groups" that is protected from deletion, with a child OU called "Specific Groups" also protected from deletion, with a Group called "My Test Group" under "Groups" OU and another group called "My Specific
Test Group" under "Specific Groups" OU then "My Test Group" cannot be moved, deleted, etc whilst "My Specific Test Group" can, despite the fact that both OUs are protected from deletion. Even if you then delegate rights to
Create, Move and Delete groups because the deny takes precedence the delegation would be useless...
Unless you are an organization where you never have an OU inside an OU containing other objects, how would you possibly benefit from this, and is there a way (without doing it manually) protect ONLY OU's from deletion without protecting child objects?

It does facilitate OU protection, but by default in 2008 R2 when you create an OU it is set to be protected. Ensuring people untick the box and then manually protect that OU (by assigning rights directly to it rather than ticking the box) every time an OU
is created for something as futile as preventing an OU from being deleted is almost a complete waste of time and the effort vs utility almost dictates that we'd be better off not having the prevent accidental deletions there at all. After all, we've survived
Windows 2000 and 2003 without this functionality...
As for the scenario, I'll give you a very simple example:
You have Workstations under Workstations>Department Name>Desktops. You obviously have several GPOs linked at either one of those 3 places. All of a sudden, as part of testing a new deployment, you are required to add another GPO to the existing ones.
As part of the testing phase, you create a Dev OU under Desktops and link the new GPO to the new Dev OU. At the same time that you do this, do you really go and create a new OU under Desktops to hold all the already existing objects under desktops and therefore
prevent having any leaf-level objects and an child OU under the same parent OU? You could claim that a better way of doing it would be to create a Test OU at the top level of Workstations, but then you'd have to work out the effective permissions and GPOs
at the other OU level and replicate it on the newly created one...

Click the icon for your phone in iSync, then choose Reset Device from the Devices menu.
It's also advisable to make a backup of your Contacts and Calendars first using the relevant command on the File menu in both Address Book and iCal.

ACCIDENTALLY DELETED PHOTOBOOTH

I was not aware that i accidentally deleted my photobooth app. when my macboook pro had a software update, my photobooth was move into my apps folder and i did not liked it so i moved it to my desktop. It's no problem really, PhotoBooth is one of those programs that only get reinstalled when OS X gets reinstalled.
But don't panick, it's easier than it sounds.
Follow these simple directions.
1: Copy your user file folders (Music, Pictures, Documents etc) to a external self powered USB drive you can pick up anywhere, office or computer store. It needs to be at least 1.5x larger than your boot drive.
2: When you hook up this drive OS X is going to ask you to make it a TimeMachine drive, you want to cancel that. You'll do it later. When the copying is finished, unmount (drag icon to Trash can) and disconnect the drive.
3: Get out the 10.6 grey install disks that come with your computer, use Disk #1 and insert it, reboot and hold down the c key, you'll boot from the disk.
4: Second screen is is a option to simply install OS X onto your boot drive, go ahead and do that. It will overwrite OS X and bundled programs only, not your third party programs or files (but you backup files regardless as you might have issues) Some root level installed third party programs will have to be reinstalled. You'll know because they won't work.
5: When the computer reboots and you log back in, immediatly use Software Update, your PhotoBooth will be returned where it belongs.
If something goes wrong, at least you have a copy of your files on the external drive.
If your grey disks are 10.5 then the above methods will not work, if you installed 10.6 from the Snow Leoaprd retail (white) install disks it's possible PhotoBooth is not included. (i'll have to check)
Making backups of your entire system.
When your ready to make that external drive a TimeMachine drive, it needs to be formatted HFS+ journaled in Disk Utility (this erases your files so make sure first!) then use the TimeMachine software.
Another better option would be to use Carbon Copy Cloner, as this makes the drive "hold the option key bootable" as TimeMachines drives are not bootable.
