I accidentally deleted my hard drive icon from finder.

I don't know how I did it exactly. I was clicking around there and then I saw it go 'poof' and disappear. I don't think I did any harm but how can I get it back in finder?

Drag it from the desktop to the Finder's sidebar.

  • My Mac Tower missing 2nd built in hard drive icon from the top right corner of my monitor?

Not sure why but my second built in hard drive icon is no longer there. Anybody know how to get it back.
MAC OS X 10.6.8 Mac tower with two built in hard drive.

First launch disk utility, then see if both drives are showing up in the left column area of the screen if you see your second hard drive try clicking on it then click repair.  Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Accidentally deleted the photos app icon from my iPhone 4s.

I've read the previous threads on this topic but none quite fit the bill. I need to re-install the Photos icon, which has disappeared.
This happened while I was holding my phone but not paying attention; when I looked again the icons were all shaking. I don't know how the icon disappeared because the factory defaults don't offer a delete option, but the icon definately disappeared at that time.
The app itself is still there and, because it was running when I deleted the icon, I can currently still access it by double clicking the main button, where app (and icon) is still accessible there at the bottom of the screen. But this is not convenient for general usage, and if I hard close the app from there then I will have no way to open the Photos app.
I can't re-download the app because it is a factory default app and not available anywhere (and as such shouldnt be deletable!).
The icon isnt hiding anywhere amongst my subfolders, and I've checked for restrictions but there arent any.
Restetting the home screen layout to factory defaults presumably means I  will lose all the other app icons I have, and their sub folders etc,  which I dont want to do either.
I have now backed up my phone and all my photos etc, but if I restore my phone from a previous backup, I will lose the data and messages I've acquired isince then.
All I want to do is re-install the icon and make sure it links to the photos app that is still installed - surley that can't be so hard?
    All help appreciated.
I don't have a Mac and run Windows 7 on a Sony VAIO. All versions of iTunes and IoS are up to date.

    PROBLEM SOLVED
ANSWER The exact same thing happened to me today.  I accidently deleted my Photo app (with over a 1000 photos in it) but I could still access it by pressing the home button twice.  This is because it was with the background running apps (when you press the home button twice it shows all the apps running in the background) but it would not let me drag it to the Home screen.
Well so I was anxiously reading this thread at church to see what to do (I did a search for, 'I accidently deleted my Photo app' and how I came across this thread).  Anyway, I searched all my subfolders and everywhere IT WAS NOT IN ANOTHER FOLDER AND THE PHOTO ICON WAS COMPLETELY GONE FROM ANY OF THE DESKTOPS.
Anyway, my phone was dying and no way to charge it so it died at church and so I connected it to my car charger in my car when leaving church and after the iphone came on again, there was the Photo App on my desktop!
So my advice is to let it completely run out of it's charge then later plug into a charger.  I have the iPhone 4S going on almost 2yrs now and this is the first time this has happened to me!   I was in a hurry getting ready for church and pressed it accidently so I know exactly when it happened (when all the apps have x's and you can delete them ...).
I always delete the backgound running apps to save battery power but I thought now I can never delete the Photo background running app or will lose everything!  Hope this works for you all.  I know I can connect it to my desktop and all but try this first - much easier...

  • Accidentally deleted Applications (Rocket Ship) Icon from Dock

Somehow I accidentally deleted the Applications Icon (with the Rocket Ship symbol) form my dock, and I would like to get it back.  I have tried dragging my Applications folder from within Finder to the Dock, but it doesn't remain there.  I'd really like to have the Rocket Ship icon back.  Does anyone know how I can get it back?  Thanks for your help!
Nevermind.  I found the answer.  Open the Applications folder, find the "Launchpad" icon, and drag it to the dock.

Found the answer in another thread, sorry!
    And, what a great forum!

  • I accidentally deleted my hard drive

    Short:
I deleted my OS X hard drive under the Windows install/format menu. Computer won't boot and no hard drives are recognized. What can I do? Any possible way to recover the drive with a recovery program that I could burn to a DVD?
    Full:
My Windows partition failed and iMac won't boot up properly. Without holding the option key it would boot saying "No bootable devices found." OS X ran if I pressed option and selected the partition. However, only one partition showed up which was OS X.  When I have OSX running I could see bootcamp. So, I took my Windows install disc and inserted it into my mac and restarted the computer. The CD booted and I was in the install menu for Windows. There was an option where to delete hard drives and partitions. I deleted the main hard drive. Now, OS X won't boot and Windows doesn't boot as well. I deleted all the partitions and I've had no luck. I took my Snow Leopard recovery installation disc that came with my 27" iMac i7 3.4GHz 2011. I tried using the disc and pressed option. The CD is detected, but it freezes at the Apple Logo. I don't want to take it to for a genius appointment because it will take a long time and last time they damaged the housing and I had to wait for them to replace that as well. I didn't have a computer for 2 months.
    Thanks.

You would have to use Internet Recovery, however if you were creating a bootable clone of your OS X data then you could simply restore, however my guess is you never backed up. Please click About OS X Internet Recovery for more information.

  • I accidentally deleted the address book icon from my home screen

And I want it back. I'm not sure how to go about this.
    Thanks.

You can't delete it.  You probably moved it into a folder or to another screen.  If you recently updated your software, the Contacts app is now located in a Utilities folder on your first home screen.
If you still can't find it, you can reset your home screen layout (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout).  This will reset all the original apps to their original positios and your purchased apps will follow in alphabetical order.

  • How can I find the Mac Hard Drive Icon in Finder?

Why don't I see an Icon for my Mac HD in Finder? Also, should there be a file "Printer Setup Utility" in the Utility file?

To show Macintosh HD in the Finder sidebar, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Sidebar, and tick "Hard disks". It will show in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices".
If you want to show it in Desktop, open Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "Hard disks".
Respecting to Printer Setup Utility, it doesn't come by default in OS X Mountain Lion. After adding a printer, it's possible that some printer utilities get added, and one of them may be Printer Setup Utility

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

  • My hard drive icon is gone from desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches!

    Hi there
recently my hard drive icon has disappeared from my Macbook Pro (10.7.4) desk top and does not show up in spotlight or finder searches! I have tried several fixes posted online for earlier operating systems with no luck.
Also, when I connect my external hard drive the icon does not appear on the desl top nor in the finder either, making looking for documents impossible.
    Help!!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Marni

In "finder" click "finder" then "preferences" and navigate to the "general" tab.
Select which items you would like to have show on your desktop.

  • What are all the hard drive icons on my desktop from app installations?

Most of the apps I have installed leave a new hard drive icon on my desktop, like these. Obviously the Macintosh HD is an good one to keep, but the others just keep accumulating and I find that to be a problem.
    What are these?
    What purpose do they serve?
    Can I delete them?
If no delete, can I hide them?
    Thanks

    1. Mounted disk images.
    2. They contain the software or its installer. The dmg format doesn't require separately storing the decompressed version of the data on the computer.
    3. Yes.

  • I accidentally made my hard drive an image of Mac OS X 10.6.3

I accidentally made my hard drive an image of Mac OS X 10.6.3, and I cant erase the hard drive anymore. Please tell me there is a way to be able to erase the image on the hard drive and put it back to the original settings?

    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You will have to restore your deleted files from a backup. If you don't have a backup, then they are lost.

  • What happens when the external icon jumps on top on the hard drive icon on the desktop?

The external drive icon jumped to the hard drive icon on the desktop and after that happen the iMAC started running slow. Not sure how that happen or what is happening to the iMAC after it happen. All my applications are running and launching slow.  Also, when I tried moving files to the external drive I'll get a "error code -36". When I looked up the error message it says that the file is corrupted even though I could still open them. How can I fix this problem and not lose any files?  Thanks for any help.

RRFS has probably got the answer basically - but the combined contents of the two drives has probably maxed out the drive space on Macintosh HD, meaning the OS can't use virtual memory properly.
Open a Finder window and read the available space at the bottom.
If you have copied the drive, it should show as a folder under Macintosh HD in the Finder.
I hesitate to tell you to delete the whole folder as that may be too much for Finder to cope with. Open the folder and delete files and folders in small chunks, emptying the trash each time before doing the next..
Meanwhile, if you go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the item for Hard Disks in the desktop list, then move the icon for the external away from that corner before re-enabling the Hard disk option.
You may need to go to View options from the right-click menu on desktop and set 'arrange by' to 'none' in order to get the icon to stay where you want it.

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.
