I accidentally deleted the systems file on my macbook.

In preparation for upgrading from Leopard 5.8 to Snow Leopard I backed up my entire macbook system to an external hard drive.  Then I deleted some files prior to installing Snow Leopard but I accidentally deleted the systems files.  I can't boot the system now.  How do I resolve the situation?

Thanks for the reply.
The backup was via Time Machine.
No, I have not tried booting from the SL 6.0 disc using the c key or Option/alt key.  When do I push the option/alt key?

What OS version are you on? You're not running iOS 6.1.2 on it.
If you're on 10.7 or 10.8, try the recovery option:

  • I've accidentally deleted the System Administrator entry in Directory Utility. How do I recreate it?

How do I recreate the "System Administrator" entry in Directory Utility. It was accidentally deleted.

If you see this article: http://www.stupidlittleblog.com/2011/technology/apple/mac-os-x-lion/mac-os-x-lio n-root-user-sigin-error/#.To_DWOsb6jV
I was having the same root user password login problem.
So I followed the instructions in it, but instead of deleting "AuthenticationAuthority" setting for System Administrator, I accidentally deleted the whole "System Administrator".
Therefore, I'll need to recreate the "System Administrator" entry in the Directory Utility. Maybe you can send me a screen capture of the System Administrator settings so I can try to recreate it. Or else if you know how I can recreate is (maybe from Terminal command line), it will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • I accidentally deleted hidden system files! Please help!

    Hi guys.
Well after purchasing a mint MBP today running Mountain Lion, I wanted to "tidy up" the desktop and Finder. I saw many hidden files and thought it was very peculiar as my iMac hasn't got anything of the kind. I thought it could have been some files from a USB that were left there from previous usage. Anyway, I've ended up deleting key system files which now causes the MacBook to fail boot and keep restarting.
I've attempted the highly recommended "Command R" function which gave me a choice of Time Machine Restore (system comes up with no backups), re-installation of Lion (which won't work because the system is running Mountain Lion) and a Disk Utility repair (which does its job but makes no difference on start up). I feel really upset and annoyed. The system had great installations of key apps I needed. I'd be sad to loose them but would be happy to just get the system rebooted and running from scratch.
The system is a late 15" 2011 MACBOOK PRO with an i7 Quad 2.44 (or 2.66) processor, 4GB memory and a 750GB hard drive.
What can I do? Is it just a case of take it to Apple so they can reboot it for you? And if that's the case will I be charged?
    Many thanks for the advice.
Apologies if this is something you have heard before, it's a horrible feeling and I just want it fixed.
    Thanks.
    Hal.

To install Lion that belongs to you will require you to repartition the drive first. You cannot do a simple reinstall of Lion over a Mountain Lion system. You will need to follow this guide instead:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This is the procedure you must go through because your hard drive does not have a Lion version of the Recovery HD.

  • HT1449 Now that i have my iTunes backed up on iCloud and iCloud Match running, can I delete the music files from my MacBook Pro?  It is running out of hard drive space.

When I started this request in the Support section, I did not realize I was typing a subject into a header.  Sorry.
My MacBook Pro is nearly full and I would like to rely on iCloud for my music with the hope of freeing up space by deleting the music files I have accumulated on this machine.  Can I just delete the files in the iTunes folder or is there some special procedure?
Thanks in advance for your help on this.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

The Creative Cloud application becomes inoperable continually on both my Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems. I'm tired of re installing the application after deleting the OOBE file to get updates and syn settings between computers for Photoshop. Is this an endemic problem with others? I'm using Google Chrome as my browser. Is this an issue with the problem?

Similar problem just happened to me with the Creative Cloud Update 1.7.1.418—slightly different so I thought I'd share. I have multiple Adobe Creative Cloud programs installed on my computer, all working just fine. I updated the Cloud App to the latest version and then it shows me that I have only one program installed! All my previously installed programs (Photoshop and the like) still work but show as "install" instead of "Up to date". Initially I thought I'd have to re-install the Cloud app or recreate the OPM data base but then I noticed that some of the Cloud app preferences (Apps > Settings > App Language) were different to what I had set previously. I use English (International) language, the update had reverted the app back to English (North American). I flicked back to my previous language and bam, all my apps now show as being installed correctly.

I accidentally deleted my media files from iTunes and Trash when I was trying to move the files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to restore the media files from a Time Machine backup or from iTunes Match? What are the steps to do this?

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

  • I may have deleted some system files from my computer due to my antivirus and now my imac won't start. Actually it does, and then there is a blank screeen with the apple logo and it shuts down right away. is tehre a possibility of recovering my files?

    Hello
I was having some problems with my Imac, for a while it was slow and often disconneceted from my wifi, while this one worked perfectly (tested with other devices)
I thoug i might have a virus, so i downloaded an antivirus (mac keeper) and started checking.
I also did a scan of my computer using Console or something from the utilities, and then a folder popped witha  file I had canceled a while ago. I canceled the file and then my Imac continued to be slow.
i then restarted my Imac, but when it started, the usual grey logo of Apple appeared, and then it shut down suddently.
I tried to reboot it holding the command key and R but nothing, and then i tried holding the shift key and a bar appeared, and at half of the bar it sut itself down again.
I think it is probably a preoblem because I may have cancelled some of the system files from a folder called "private" in the "documents" folder.
Is there any way I can recover some of my files? maybe all of them? I hope so because I have some important files there
Is this a thing I can do myself or do Ineed to go to a MacStore to repair it? Will I need to change HD or just to format it and reinstall? also if there is any way i can recover some of my files that would be great.
    Thanks
    Ludo
P.S. problems appeared when i installed the Mavericks version.

If MacKeeper corrupted the Recovery partition then even I underestimated its potential for damage. Garbage "cleaning" apps will cause misery but I have not found that the Recovery partition to have been affected by using MacKeeper or anything like it. I doubt that it did so, but I have learned not to underestimate the potential for such things to result in system corruption.
Before concluding your Mac has a hardware failure, try booting OS X Internet Recovery by holding command option r on startup (three fingers). That will force your iMac to bypass the Recovery partition altogether, and convey the ability to create a new one.
An Internet connection will be required (wired or wireless).
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
Assuming the HD remains usable you can then use Disk Utility to erase it. Reinstall OS X, restore your essential software and other files, and don't reinstall the junk.

  • I accidentally deleted the documents folder from my hard drive. can I recover it?

I accidentally deleted the documents folder (and its contents) from my ibook hard drive. Can I recover it?

It takes a really expensive data recovery service to get back things that have been deleted.
You could try Data Rescue 3, if you're desperate to get the documents back.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    System Requirements:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_sysreq.php
If you want to try this, stop using the iBook immediately, and wait until you get the recovery software because every time you save something to your hard drive (even if it's only a link in your browser history), you risk overwriting the files you deleted.

I have accidentally deleted the trash bin in my mailbox and can no longer move any deleted mail into the trash.  I thought I was removing all the emails from the trash bin but somehow managed to delete the bin instead.  Does anyone know who to reinstate the bin?

You are running 10.6.8? If yes, I assume you have your install disks? As the trash bin is part of Mail app and that is an integral part of the OS, the only way I know to get it back is to reinstall the OS. You won't lose any files, just reinstall the OS over the top of the current system.
