I accidentally reset Firefox back to default, can my mistake be undone?

I was troubleshooting on how to fix a problem with Firefox running extremely slow and somehow accidentally clicked on the Reset Firefox to its default state button. I lost all my saved passwords, user ID's, addon extensions, etc. Can this be undone? I've even tried to reset my computer back prior to a date with no luck. I have Firefox version 32 and run Windows 7 professional.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your

In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild
your saved files individually into installable .xpi files.
It will also make backup of files that you choose.

Backing up and restoring your Profile should have included your bookmarks.

That looks like a JSON bookmarks backup file, from 11-01-2012. Did you try '''restoring''' that file?

Never messed with JSON files other than viewing them on a few occasions out of curiosity. There are no line breaks which make them very difficult to read.
As far as working with that file in {like} NotePad goes:
    A. use Find / Search for each indecent of a '''"uri"''' string, then "copy and paste" the uri into another text file, and then move on to the next "uri" string.
    B. use a text program where a filter can be set for the "uri" field in the JSON file for a line break or to "scrape out" the "uri"s only for display or export to a list of uri's.
Or try using an online JSON editor like this, to try to display only the "uri" field.

If you don't see the '''Reset Firefox''' button on the Troubleshooting Information page in Firefox, you may not be using the ''default=1'' Profile as listed in the profiles.ini file.

  • After uninstall, reinstall, and reset, I cannot get Firefox back to defaults. How can I?

I successfully uninstalled Firefox. Then I reinstalled it. All the presets and addons were STILL there. Then I tried a reset. That only cleared my homepage, but all the addons and plugins are there. I want this to be back to default. How can i do that?

I guess I'll have to repeat myself for the third time. I want firefox to be back to the default.

I completely understand your are not an employee. I'm not angry because the program doesn't work. I'm upset because contributors don't take the time to read my post before making suggestions that I've already tried.
To reiterate, I want Firefox to be back to defaults. Obviously there is a malware/spyware/virus problem. How do i get back to the defaults? I found and read all the Mozilla support posts about "resetting," and as I said, that does not work. So... (understanding my situation) how do I get back to the firefox defaults?

  • Will all of my downloads be deleted if In reset Firefox back to its original default?

Firefox is slow to start and when it does the system will lock up and I receive a message that "Firefox Mozilla is not responding" This is happening quiet frequently, everyday actually. I want to restart to see if this will fix the problem and I've read your articles and what will be deleted but I'm still not clear on a couple of issues.
    1. Will all my downloads, i.e., pictures, resumes, etc be deleted if I reset?
    2. I have just downloaded a new security system. Will this be deleted?
    3. I understand about the saved history and tool bar which I can re-install.
    4. Is there any way to speak to a technician by telephone?
Your prompt response is appreciated. Tony Morales

Files that you have downloaded will always be stored in the folder where you saved them an the actual files will never be removed when you reset Firefox.<br />
I don't know for sure if you keep the download history as part of the history that is imported when you reset Firefox.<br />
What kind of issues do you have with the current Firefox profile folder that you want to reset Firefox?

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

What kind of problems do you have that you want to reset Firefox?
When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.<br />
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover more data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

  • Not long ago I tried to reset Firefox and now I can't access it. How do I get back in?

Not long ago I rest Firefox and have not been able to access it since. It says "not accessible or missing" now. All troubleshooting tips require accessing Firefox but I can't do that. Is there a back-door way to get back in?

Download Firefox from www.getfirefox.com and try installing it over your current install.

  • Certain websites require IE, and accidentally setting Firefox as my default browser has completely messed up my desktop shortcuts.

When I changed my default back to IE, the icons changed back, but everything still opens in Firefox... How can I get the shortcuts to open in IE? I've tried deleting the original shortcuts and creating new ones, but they still open in Firefox...
    Thanks

    Hi,
I'm not 100% sure I understand your problem. From what you've said, I think you're saying you've changed your default browser to Firefox, and the desktop icons all changed from the internet explorer icon (the blue e) to the firefox icon. You've changed the default browser back to IE, but the icons haven't changed back, and when you click on them they open in Firefox.
If that's the case, the problem is with your default browser setup. From what you've said, you've already set it in the browser similiar to [[How to make web links open in Firefox by default|the support article]]; for some reason Windows hasn't changed the default browser.
You could try (in Win 7) opening the control panel, then Programs ->Set Default Programs, and click on Internet Explorer in there, then "Set this Program as Default".

  • WRT54GL randomly resets settings back to default

I've had my WRT54GL for a couple of months now, and it keeps wiping my saved settings and reverting back to the default. It works fine with all devices for a week or so after the initial set-up, then will only work on the system that is wired.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    1. The WRT is bad. Replace the router. Configuration is cleared if the contents of the NVRAM gets corrupted. That happens with age or a bad chip. Either way, it needs to be replaced.
    2. Try to make a small change to the configuration every week (or whatever time frame works). With each change the NVRAM is written again and it should refresh all cells. This may prevent the loss of configuration unless it's a bad chip...

  • Reset firefox button not showing

I run Fedora 18 KDE and Firefox 20
Some websites do not load at all, the icon just keeps loading and eventually it says failed. I have performed the following to troubleshoot.
Tried the same website in Chrome - With success in loading
Cleared all Firefox History to the beginning of time
Gone to Help-Troubshooting Information-But NO "Reset Button or Link" can be found on this page.
Scoured Google re the missing "Reset firefox button" - Nothing found
    Can you please help

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
