I accidently pluged a mini usb to firewire and **** happened! how do i test

hi. i did a stupid thing lastnight.
i thought i had a firewire 800 cable and tried to plug my Motu Ultralite in to my NEW Macbook Pro.... but in fact it was a mini usb!!!
when they touched i got some sparks and my MBP shut off.
however it did turn on again and i think is ok. but im wondering if it has done any internal damage or could affect it in some way in the future.
is there any way of doing some tests???
many thanks

Insert your Install DVD (that came with your MBP) and reboot with the d key pressed, which will run the Apple Hardware Test:

  • Mini USB or Firewire for connecting a ext. HDD

    Morning.
What's better and why: To connect an ext. HDD via mini USB or via Firewire with a Mac Book Pro?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

There's mini USB port on the MBP?
The advantages of the USB is the flexibility, but FireWire is less resource heavy for backups. There HDD enclosures that incorporate both USB and FW.

  • Mac mini usb 3.0 and external drive with Sleep issue

I have now a new mini with USB3.0.
I attached an external sharkoon sata quickport h3.
If i use an USB 2 cable everything is fine.
When i use USB 3 cable then after sleep, OSX says that the external drive was not properly dismounted....

So, i tried an external USB3 2,5" harddrive and it works directly on the mini.
When i plug this drive to the sharkoon, it doesn't work.
So it seems that the USB3 Hub of sharkoon isn't working properly with the power managament of osx.

  • Firewire Dead? how do you test it?

none of our firewire drives are mounting. occasionally in system profiler it says "unknown device" but more recently we get this:
    "FireWire Bus:
Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices.
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec"
i ran both TTP and the hardware test from the original restore disks, TTP doesn't have a firewire test, and apple hardware test turned up no errors after multiple detailed checks.
is there a hardware test that can be done to test the firewire bus? or should TTP and apple hardware test find it?

Have you tried plugging in just one firewire device at a time? A lot of people have found that a single device can prevent the system from recognizing all the other firewire devices that are also connected. Unplug any USB devices (other than keyboard and mouse) too, in case a storage device is the problem.

  • TS3116 After updating, apple TV does not work. A picture is one TV screen which ask to use mini USB.

Hi... I am not sure what generation I have
After updating, I does not start at all, no light signal.
Just picture show to me to use mini USB for Song logo.
    How can I do?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
        1.    Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
        2.    Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
        3.    Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
        4.    Open iTunes.
        5.    Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • Appletv mini usb port not working

Plugged in mini usb into Macbook and its not reading the appletv. Any thoughts?

only reason one connects it by usb is if the appletv have 100% crashed and need to have it's firmware restored
not sure what you mean by "does not read on my bacbook" but if you mean it does not access the macbooks shared itune lib then thats a feature that needs to be turned on in itunes on the computer
not be block by the firewall in the computer
and not be blocked by the wifi router
most wifi router blocking can be ruled out if you try to connect it by ethernet cable rather then wifi
then all you have which could be blocking you would be your computers firewall which you can turn off to test
or if you did not set your itunes lib to be shared which you can then do in your itunes on your computer

  • Charging iPhone 5 Lightning with Mini USB

In my car is a built in charger with a Mini USB (not Micro) adapter. How can I connect it with my iPhone 5 Lightning? Apple offers an adapter Lightning to Micro USB, but no Mini USB adapter.

If you have the micro to lightning and the mini usb is a socket
then a Micro usb male to mini usb male should fix it
    Google it
I found many ,it just depends on your Counrty
or a lightning cable with  a normal USB socket to micro plug adapter

  • Dual Display Issues, Mini Display Cable, Firewire, USB, Nothing Works

I am working on a project for my supervisor, the specifics of each machine are listed below to the best of my ability:
    Machine 1:
    iMac9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo
    Version: 10.6.8
    Build: 10K549
    Machine 2:
    iMac10,1 Intel Core 2 Duo
    Version: 10.6.8
    Build:10K549
I have a iLuv Mini DisplayPort Cable, a 9-Pin to 9-Pin Firewire Cable, a M/M USB Cable and an ethernet cable.  What I have been trying to do is link these two computers together so that each can be used as a seperate processor but their screens can be shared.  Before anyone tells me this is impossible, these two monitors have in the past been connected together so there was the ability to dual use the computer monitors.  I do not remember if I actually had the processing power of both available.  When I plug the minidisplay port cable from one computer to the other the screen on Machine 2 will blink black to blue and then go back to an independent screen.  The displays tab on neither computer shows two displays and none of the command f2 or f3 prompts are causing either computer to respond.  I have tried connecting them with firewire and USB and can only get disk transfer mode from the Firewire.  I know these computers used to be able to support being connected to one another and now I have no idea what is going on.  I don't personally remember having a minidisplay port cable in the beginning so its possible I am going about this all wrong.  I have called Apple Support many times and they suggested an OSX reinstall.  I found the reinstallation software for 10.6.3 for a macbook 13 inch and each computer recognized the disc but said that the operating system could not be installed.  At this point I have done everything I can think of including running a hardware test through the diagnostic tool at startup and on both computers the test came up with no error codes.  Please please help me get these computers working again for my boss!

Both the 9,1 (Early 2009) and 10,1 (Late 2009) iMac's only support Target Disk Mode using FireWire.
see > Target Disk Mode vs. FireWire networking | Macworld
or > Apple Tips Using Target Disk Mode
Adding that if the Late 2009 is a 27" then it supports Mini DisplayPort input for use as a monitor from another Mini DisplayPort Mac.
see > iMac: How to use your iMac as a Target Display Mode display
An Ethernet cable can be used for Networking and File Sharing the two iMac's.
see > Mac Basics: File Sharing
Plus connecting two iMac's together with a USB cable, will do nothing except trip the USB port overloads or something worse.

  • Old firewire/mini USB Iomega Drive, power & connectivity

Hi Sorry I don't come here often and don't know where to post this. So if it's in the wrong place apologies in advance.
We plan to do a lot of travelling now and I've ordered a Mac Book Air, my preference to using an iPad and the Cloud for managing photos.
I've got a couple of older portable hard drives inc a 1TB Iomega which is/was excellent but has firewire and mini usb connection. I understand the Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor is useless for providing power to portables.
Does anyone know if it is possible to double connect the drive i.e. using both the one mini USB and the Tb/Fw adaptor to boost the power and performance?
    Many thanks guys

Well, it turns out that somehow the enclosure was making my drive unreadable. I borrowed my brother's Pismo and installed the drive in it, and it wasn't readable the same as with the enclosure—but it let me format it, and it worked fine after that. But when I put the drive back in the enclosure, it popped up with 'unreadable' again - and it was still unreadable when I put it back in the Pismo again. For some reason using that enclosure totally scrambled the drive's directory.

  • USB or Firewire for ipod mini

    Hi all!
I'm anxiously awaiting my new iBook, but am sweating the fact that i didn't get a Firewire cable for my ipod mini dock. My iBook has version OSX 10.4, and didn't realize the dock came with nil connector cables. My Ipod was formatted on a friend's PC (couldn't wait to try it out, and my laptop wouldn't support it!), and was purchased with a USB connector. Does anyone know of a work around (should i need one) so that i'll be able to sync/reformat my ipod when the ibook gets here (hopefully tomorrow...can't stand it anymore!!), since we'll be leaving for vacation shortly after. No Apple stores in my area, so it would have to be a mail order!....any ideas?
p.s. any mac users in the Montreal Canada area? where do you get accessories?

There's mini USB port on the MBP?
The advantages of the USB is the flexibility, but FireWire is less resource heavy for backups. There HDD enclosures that incorporate both USB and FW.

  • Daisy Chain USB To FireWire?

    Hi all.
I'm not really sure where to post this, so any suggestions about a better place would be great. Anyway, here's my question.
I do a lot of work with photos, and they take up a lot of hard drive space, so what I'm planning to do is this: I'll buy a big external hard drive with lots of connections (1 USB, 2 FireWire 800, 1 FireWire 400). I'll also buy a smaller external hard drive with much less in the way of connections (1 USB only). The big drive will act as my main storage drive, with all the files for each image included on it. The smaller drive will act as the bakcup drive, with the top 20% or so of my best photos in only a compressed format on it. I want the smaller (backup) drive to be as cheap as possible, as I don't have much of a budget at all. Here are the two drive selections I've made: big drive:
    LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple
    Small drive:
    WD Elements
    Desktop
So, here's the question: I know that you can daisy chain FireWire drives that have more than one port together, like this:
A cable from FireWire port on Drive A to FireWire port on Drive B, then a cable from another FireWire port on Drive B to the FireWire port on computer. I know this works (right?).
But I don't want to have to spend more money on Drive A (the backup drive) so that it has a FireWire port. Since Drive B (the main drive) has a USB port, I thought I would run a USB cable from Drive A to Drive B like this:
*Setup 1*:A cable from the USB port on Drive A to the USB port on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on the computer.
Will setup 2 work? Will the data from Drive A make the crossover from USB to FireWire? If not, I suppose I could also use this setup:
*Setup 2:* A cable from the USB port on Drive A to one of the FireWire 800 ports on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on my computer. Will this work better? Do USB to FireWire 800 adapters really work?
So, basically, all I really need to know is whether or not Setup 1 will work, and if it doesn't, whether or not Setup 2 will. Also, if anyone has any info/reviews/stories about the two drives I've selected, I'd love to hear that as well.
Thanks so much in advance for any help I get. Sorry about the long post; I hope it made sense.
    Thanks again.
    Nate

What about Setup 2, though? Does someone sell a USB to FireWire Converter?
Nobody has heard of a USB to FireWire converter that works.
The first example you gave would require a USB B to USB B cable or perhaps a "gender bender". Both of the drives you're looking at seem to still use the original full-sized USB B port, while many have gone to the mini-B. It wouldn't work anyways since both are USB slave devices. USB was never designed to daisy-chain.
Why can't you just connect the USB-only device to the USB port. If you're strapped for ports, then maybe a USB hub. You wouldn't even need a powered hub if you have a few low-powered devices and this external drive which doesn't use bus power.

  • Ipod Mini - USB Port

I am thinking of getting an Ipod Mini but my laptop only has a USB 1 Port and I was wondering if the Ipod Mini will work with a USB 1 port as all of the literature about it only mentions using it with a USB 2.0 port. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

As Jeff said, you will be much better off if you get a good Firewire PCI card such as the Adaptec Fireconnect 4300. Firewire is normally faster and more reliable than USB (1 or 2). Note that a Firewire iPod cable is also needed if you take this route.

  • USB vs Firewire results

I was recently given a 60 gb ipod that was not working, it would not power up so I plugged in with usb cable itunes says it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored and the battery will not recharge. I though since I have a pc that maybe it was mac formated so I swapped hard drives and it said the same thing. The next day I went to try again, but this time by accident I used the firewire cable and just like that it went straight to the ipod menu screen and I could see all the files, but still no charge on the battery.
I tried the usb cable again and once again itunes says its in recovery mode and must be restored.
What is happening? And what must I do?

  • USB or Firewire Audio Mixer?

If I'm going to record in real-time (not just copy audio files to the HD), would it be better to get a mixer that has USB or firewire outputs?
Or should I just use analog RCA outs on the mixer to the analog mini-in on the Mac?

Either will work - sufficient RAM and speedier hard drives are more "weighted" in your equation than the interface.
