I ack only type special characters, so I'm locked out. Help?

My cat stepped on my keyboard and some buttons on a wacom tablet. I thought the keyboard might be acting up when I could only type special characters, but I took out the batteries and plugged in another keyboard.

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • Only one logon attempt to ACS before locked out

    We are setting up a wireless network, and using ACS v3.3. We have found that wired users get 3 attempts to get their passwords correct, but wireless users only get one before their account is locked out. Being somewhat new to ACS and wireless, does anybody know why this may be happening?
    Thanks in advance.

    It may just be a function of the wireless client you are using. I run into the same problem ocassionally, but it is typically user profiles which have user names and passwords stored. When they are required to change their windows password, they forget to change the stored password and end up locking their account. You should be able to see how many times the client automatically retries by using a bad password and using the command "debug radius authentication" on your AP. The Intel client has a setting in one of its .ini files stating the number of authentication retries (default=0), but I can't say about other clients without testing it.

  • ITunes will only display special characters/foreign languages when it is started while not connected to the internet

    This problem started right after upgrading to iTunes 10.5.
    I opened iTunes and all of the songs with special characters, japanese text, etc. showed up as boxes (the fallback unicode rectangle or whatever the proper name is). The result is that I have a ton of songs that just look like this - [][][][][][][][]
    The only thing I have found to fix it is if I disconnect the internet, restart the computer, open itunes and then I can reconnect the internet. When I open itunes while not online, the song titles all go back to normal.
    I can't figure out why being online makes any difference. Yes, I have the correct language packs installed and the characters display correctly in all programs besides itunes.
    Thanks for any help. Let me know if there is any additional info you need.

    I don't have the bit-rot or router issue, but I'm frequently experiencing dropped connections with my ISP (a satellite service). Disabling / reabling the Ethernet port, or closing my laptop lid for a few seconds, usually fixes the problem, abiet temporarily.
    I've noticed during these dropped connections that over 90% of the time, the ethernet port continues to show as active and with a valid IP. The problem seems to have something to do with OS X requesting a new IP when it already has one. The longer I'm online, the more frequently this happens.
    I've installed Apples Broadband Tuner, and am going through my providers Web proxy.
    However, when I VPN into work with the companies PC laptop, the connection seldom drops and is likely due to VPN server overload, which leads me to believe this is an OS X thing.
    Thanks for your help.
    BTW, I removed my router because, even though the setting were correct and both laptops where getting an IP, the MAC dropped more frequently, and I had a much harder time getting a VPN connection on the PC.

  • Mail, can't send, can't type special characters

    I can't send mail but I can recieve mail. I can't reply to email. When opening a new mail I can add the address and subject line but when I type in the body of the email I start typing and as soon as I hit the space bar or any special characters it freezes up and I can't do anything. I've rebuilt the the mailbox, I've checked my quotas and they are fine. I can also get on the internet. This happened to me before but forgot what the problem was. The other day I updated to the latest OS X but everything was ok till yesterday when I took my laptop to our other location where I'm wireless through a cable modem. I have the same connection at both locations. I am using Mac Mail version 2.0.5 This is driving me crazy that I can't find an answer. Please, can anyone out there help me, I sure would appreciate it.

  • How can I type special characters on bootcamp?

    Hello,
    I try to find a way to type specials caracters on windows that I used to type on my PC with the combination ALT+XXXX where X are numbers. I have search here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/17571606#17571606 https://discussions.apple.com/message/12157759#12157759) and on the net but I'm still not able to type them.
    Does anyone has found a solution to this?
    I know that I can use the caracter table embedded in windows but that's not very convenient when you need to regularly type special caracters.
    I have a MBP retina with Win7 x64 on bootcamp.
    Thank you

    For Wondows, see THIS web page for the ALT codes.
    For Mac, see THIS web page for the character pallette.
    I hope this helps.

  • Understanding how to type special characters

    We're running Frame 7.2p158 on Windows XP and experiencing unexpected results using keyboard sequences to insert special characters.
    1. Out of my group of 7, 2 writers say that Ctrl+q zero does not insert the multiplication sign in the default font. It works for the rest of us. I didn't believe this until I personally experiment with other combinations listed in the help that do not work on my machine.
    2. On the help page entitled Symbols Page for Windows, there is a list of Alt+Ctrl combinations that are supposed to insert Greek letters. None of these work for me. I have tried pressing Ctrol and alt simultaneously then the letter, as I do with the multiplication sign that does work for me. I have tried pressing Ctrl, then Alt then a letter, I have tried pressing all three at the same time. None of these work.
    This makes me think I am missing some simple point, or omitting some step.
    Does anyone out there have any idea what?
    TIA.
    Stan Stansbury

    If you want to do the same, but also including the possibility to use Unicode do this (FM8!!!):
    Hold down the Alt key and hit the + (PLUS) key on the numeric keypad followed by the hex code for the unicode character you want. For letters use the normal keys on the keyboard.
    For example, to get permille, enter
    Alt + PLUS + 2030
    If you are working on a laptop this becomes extremely ackward since the numeric keypad is often 'hidden' with the use of a function key of some sorts.

  • The arrows for my type tool controlling the size are locked out.

    This occurred all of a sudden. How can I fix this? I can work around it, but would like to know why this happened and if it can be fixed.

    It's anyone's guess why it happened, seeing as you didn't provide any details as to ID version, OS, etc.
    If there's a fix, it's likely you'll eventually hit it via the usual sequence; replace preferences, reboot, re-install...

  • Preview typing special characters only

    I'm having troubling typing text w/ Preview.
    When I try to type, it only types special characters. I'm thinking if I accidently used some shortcut combination to type special characters.
    It is not letting me type normal language at all now. Does anyone have any idea?
    If there is a way to uninstall preview and reinstall, would anyone let me know? Thanks!!!

    Why is everyone going on about the Character Pallette when most of the required symbols are available from the keyboard?
    Using the option key, these are the standard symbols for US and UK keyboards (lower case followed by upper case with the addition of the shift key) Starting with the numeric row;
    ¡€#¢∞§¶•ªº–≠
    ⁄™‹›fifl‡°·‚—±
    œ∑´®†¥¨^øπ“‘
    Œ„‰ÂÊÁËÈØ∏”’
    åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æ«
    ÅÍÎÏÌÓÔÒÚÆ»
    `Ω≈ç√∫~µ≤≥÷
    ŸÛÙÇ◊ıˆ˜¯˘¿
    Enable the Keyboard viewer by checking 'show keyboard and character viewer in the menu bar' in System Preferences > Keyboard > keyboard tab.
    Open the keyboard viewer from the flag menu and press the opt key - you'll see all the available symbols and accents. Some of them are highlighted in orange - these can be used with multiple letter combinations.
    For instance, opt+e followed by e = é, opt+e followed by a = á, opt+u followed by o = ö.

  • Dialog box type showing up as special characters

    I am not sure what I did but almost all of my dialog boxes in osx show up as special characters and therefore unreadable. Any help in fixing this would be awesome.
    heres a screen shot.

    Back up all data.
    Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them, then boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • Special characters in Fireworks 8

    In Fireworks MX, I can type special characters via Alt+nnnn.
    I can input a large portion of the full Unicode range this way,
    including General Puncuation (8192-8303) and Geometric Shapes
    (9632-9727).
    In Fireworks 8, the Alt method only seems to work for decimal
    values up to 0255, regardless of the font. Why, and how can I get
    the full range back? It is a PITA to have to type other characters
    in a word processor or from the Character Map, then paste into
    Fireworks. That's a huge step backwards, for sure.

    I guess the ideal path would be the ability to add new
    characters to
    that Panel ... alex

  • Using XML with special characters - not rendering

    Hello,
    I am using xml to populate the content of a Flash file, but
    we have localized content for different global regions. So, when
    the content contains special characters like "é" they do not
    show up at all in the flash. I tried using é but that
    just renders the actual code...
    Is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks

    Hi Rothrock, thanks for your reply...
    Flash Version: 8, but the swf was published to be 7+
    compatible.
    The font is Meta Normal, it is embedded, and it does include
    the character.
    I am retrieving the xml by using this script in the html
    page:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    // <![CDATA[
    var fo = new FlashObject("/templates/flash/index.swf" +
    cKiller, "ad-flash", "710", "351", "7", "#FFFFFF");
    fo.addVariable("xmlURL", "/flash_content/products.xml");
    fo.write("ad");
    // ]]>
    </script>
    I am creating the XML using Macromedia Homesite, with the
    encoding declaration <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    The XML is being read fine, only the special characters don't
    show up... so it will cut off the word, or just have an empty space
    where the character should be.
    I am not sure how to specifiy Extended Latin charset in the
    document... could you tell me how to do that?
    Thanks

  • Transfer/Reply to emails with french special characters - BB 9360

    Hi,
    I've got a problem when I reply/transfer to mails with french special characters (such as "é" "è" "ç" etc..) => all the special characters are replaced with strange characters such as chinese letters or others.
    No problem when I send an email with those same characters, it appears only when transfer or reply and only on special characters contained in the original mail I transfer/reply to.
    is there a way to solve this issue?
    thanks

    while pressing the 'e' key, scroll your trackball side to side, you will find the various e variations.
    You can do that with most keys to get special characters.

  • Searching special characters

    In SES, is it possible to do a exact search for string with special characters ? For ex: "/dev/"
    The help doc says, special characters are treated as separators.

    Is this the best and / or the only way to accomplish this?Yes, as far as I know it is the only way. Ordinarily, you could enclose the entire string in {}, but you can't since those are also characters in your string.
