I added an SSD and I have 2 drives

I just added a SSD drive to my MBP and I moved the original drive to the optical bay. I am interested in having the SSD only handle the startup and the OS. I want place app icons on the SSD desktop, I want the apps to be kept on the original drive. How do I do this?

Partitioning an SSD!!! Normally users make raid 0 out of several SSD to have a one large partition striped across the SSDs.  Can not think of a good reason to partition an SSD. Perhaps there may be???

My midi/audio interface ( Edirol PCR1) will not interface with Yosemite 10.10 and Roland have no driver update, is there any fix for the problem or is the end of the line for this device.

Same problem here, what a shame as this has been my favorite portable keyboard for ages. Whenever I see one in a store(very rarely) I'll grab it.

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Installed SSD and 8GB ram, Now Drive wont read Cds

I have a late 09 15" Macbook Pro.  Today I installed an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and 8gb of Crucial ram, I also disabled SMS and made it so the drives wouldnt go to sleep.  Everything works REALLY fast and great except for some reason now when I put a CD in, the computer thinks its blank.  Dvds work fine.
Any ideas?  Maybe I bumped the connector on the drive?

I booted off of my old drive just to see if its a SSD issue.  It does the exact same thing booting form the original hard drive.  Also I took the optical drive out and gave it a visual, double checked the connections too.  I also tried to reenable SMS and that didnt make any difference.  It all seems OK, but it still doesnt like CDs.
Seems odd that my drive would stop working at the exact same time that I change to an SSD.

  • WDS: Can an image captured from a HDD be deployed to a SSD (and still have all the benefits of an SSD...)?

WDS Server is Windows Server 2012.  All captured images are Windows 7 x64 Enterprise.  I'm capturing images from a virtual machine (VMware Workstation) on a HDD and hoping to deploy to SSDs.  Will this cause any issues?  Will certain
SSD advantages be disabled?  Are there any steps I need to take to make it work/optimize it?

I would say it wouldn't change anything in terms of performance. If you do a capture and sysprep it would be just like you install from scratch from a DVD, since sysprep removes all hardware-related information. The advantage of SSD is usually only dependent
on the controller and driver. As you say if you have SATA mode AHCI or RAID, this usually releases the controllers full capabilities as 6Gbps port, aswell all native querying etc.
However, since you are running IRST, I want to mention that the IRST driver makes a BIG difference, e.g. if you are having Dell systems and running either RAID0 or RAID5, the performance increase can be up to +50% using the latest drivers from Intel instead
of the built in ones. I haven't tested the difference for single disks though, but it shouldn't differ as much.

  • Message comes up on startup: You are unable to log in to the user account "terry" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.  This is a late 2012 mac mini with a 64g SSD and 1 Gig hard drive installed.  Help please!

As in title.  I have tried resetting the password. Nothing works to get me past this problem.  The computer was working fine before this happened.

I have just purchased this mini and it was wiped to a virtual new unit.  I have done an install of the OS up to 10.9.5 and then installed my purchased software that is stored on iTunes through wifi.  The computer was working fine although sometimes a bit slow.  I have it set up with the SSD as the program drive and the 1T drive for data which I have no files on it yet.  I am the only account on the computer so cannot log in on another account.  I booted up holding the Alt key and then used the restore drive which brought up the Utilities window.  I then opened Terminal and typed in "resetpassword" and then closed out and restarted the computer.  It seems to recognize my new password but still gives me the same message as above.
I do have an Apple OS system 10.7 on USB if that needs to be used to reinstall the OS to fix the problem. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.

  • Optimal use of SSD and Rotational Drives?

I have a brand new iMac with 2TB rotational drive and 256GB SSD. What is the best way to optimally use these in combination?

Boot from the SSD and use the rotational drive for storage of big files.
You could also partition it and have a Time Machine backup on there.

  • Can I partition 256gb ssd and 1tb hard drive to be split 50 / 50 for Mac OS and windows?

I am going to buy a new iMac. The question is which storage option? If I get the 256GB ssd and the 1TB option, it appears the mac OS is pre installed on the ssd which is great.  I would then like to install windows 7 on the ssd using bootcamp, and partitioning the ssd to be half for mac and half windows.  I think this is the best thing to do... Correct? My main concern is then can I also split the 1 TB hard drive as well? Ideally I would like to split both drives 50 / 50, install the operating systems and software on the ssd and use the hard drive as general storage.  I have read mixed reports on the possibilities of this and would really appreciate your help and advice.  I am not that technical and would like to avoid using third party software, and stick to bootcamp if possible.
    Thanks all!

I suggest you open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the button to print the documentation. Read it carefully before using BCA. BCA only creates the partition. It does not format it. That is done with the Windows installer at the beginning of the Windows installation.
Although Windows can r/w NTFS volumes OS X can only read them. That means you can copy files from the Windows boot volume but not write files to it. If you need to move files to and from the Windows system you would use the data volume you will set up on the HDD. If you don't need to use files larger than 4 GBs in Windows then FAT32 is fine. Using ExFAT would only be advisable if you anticipate the need to handle files larger than the 4 GB limit of FAT32.

  • Migration data from old iMac to new iMac w SSD and internal HD

Looking for the best approach for data Migration from older iMac with 500GB of data to new iMac with 256GB SSD and 2TB internal hard drive. What's the best way to split OS and Apps to SSD and then all User data to the internal hard drive?

  • Download / Installation - Want to download and install on different drives. How?

    Hi,
About to install the CS6 Production Premium trial via download assistant before making a purchase and I would like to know if it is possible to download and install to one drive and then move installation to a completely seperate drive without messing it all up?
The main reason for this is that I do not download straight to SSD unless it is just some quick updates etc and instead have other drives that get write hammered and looking at the installation process I dont see a way to download to a diff drive other than the one you want the program on as an end result?
    Thanks.

Assuming that you are on Windows...
I installed the CS6 Master Collection yesterday, and the initial installer panel gave me an option to specify the install location.  See the image in this post forums.adobe.com/message/4631926#4631926

  • Yosemite crashed and my default boot drive is not visible

I installed Yosemite with no problems, but while playing a game my 2009 Mac Pro crashed, which has never happened before. On reboot, it now seems to be booting from a secondary internal drive, which is essentially a clean 10.9 install. My SSD, which was my main drive, is no longer visible. It can't be seen from Disk Warrior 4.4, Disk Utility, or under the About this Mac system report.
I have a Time Machine backup, on an external drive, from this afternoon, but it is not configure for the "new" boot drive. I am not sure how to use it to overwrite this drive. Maybe I should have posted this in the Time Machine forum, but I thought the Yosemite crash was the important point.
Any Ideas on how I can recover my old drive or restore my backup on my secondary drive?

I am up and running again. I removed my SSD and replaced it with an older drive that I had removed when I put the SSD in. The old drive could not be seen on reboot, but the SSD could be seen through a USB port. I assumed this meant my SATA controller had a problem. I decided to reinstall the SSD in the empty optical drive bay. Int he process I had to remove the 2 OS X hard drives, the one that booted in bay 2, and the one that could not be seen in bay 1. I also reinstalled those 2 drives. Bay 3 and 4 have windows drives.
Upon booting all three OS X drives could be seen. After giving them all unique names, I was able to boot back into Yosemite. I have no idea what was wrong. Was it the OS, the drive, the SATA controller? All seem to be working now.
Lets see what happens when I try to play my game again!

Then I installed Yosemite. There was a bit of hang during the install, but Yosemite came up no issue when I rebooted. Here is the problem:
Every other time I boot the MacBook it hangs at a grey screen with the prohibitory sign. Verbose reveals a "still waiting for root device" error. Now if I reboot from that hang, it boots fine, but then will hang again the next time. It keeps alternating like this. Any ideas??
I am not running any third party trim software, so that's not the issue.

  • Can I have iTunes music on my SSD and an external drive? How will this affect syncing to iOS devices?

I don't have space to keep my entire iTunes library on my SSD. Currently I have my iTunes library split as follows:
SSD: Contains a subset of music, apps, books, etc. New items usually get added here.
External HD: Contains all of my music and iTunes media (including apps... so many apps). It's usually missing the most recent items added, due to the fact I don't plug it in so often.
I ran into a problem maintaining these two libraries earlier while syncing my iPhone. When I tried to sync the iPhone with the SSD library, it would delete apps off of my phone because they weren't contained in the iTunes library there, even though I had the same base .itl file for both the SSD and the external libraries.
What I want to do is set it up so that I maintain a core of music on my SSD and the stuff I don't listen to as often on my external hard drive. I also want to keep all the space hogs (movies, apps, etc) on the external as well. However, I want this to appear as one seamless iTunes library and I DON'T EVER WANT ANYTHING DELETED FROM MY PHONE WHEN I SYNC IT. I want to be able to sync my phone without worrying that apps will be deleted and I'll have to restore them from iCloud and reset all the settings, sign in, etc. Right now I am backing up to iCloud, but my understanding is that iTunes will still delete things from my phone if they are not available in the library.
My question: How do I accomplish this? I have a lot of metadata in my iTunes library that I don't want to lose (playcounts, ratings, etc).
I currently have this:   SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD, a mixture of iTunes media (some that I want easily accessible, some I don't)
External drive: .itl file pointing to music on the external drive, all of my iTunes media (except for anything I may have added to the SSD)
I think I need this:       SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD and the external, music that I listen to often
External drive: music that I don't listen to often, things that take up a lot of space
My thought process is that I will need to somehow move music from the external to the SSD while maintaining the pointers so that iTunes knows where they are. For this I have unchecked "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding To Library," and to maintain the pointers and move the songs, I'm thinking of using Doug's Applescripts for "Relocate Selected:" http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected
Once I have the songs split across these drives, I'm going to copy the .itl file from the external to the SSD and boot it up to see if it works.
Two things: 1.) Will this approach work? Can I maintain my library across separate drives this way and have it be seamless? I understand I won't be able to access the media on my external hard drive when it is not plugged in (duh), but...
2.) Will it affect syncing? When my external isn't plugged in, will iTunes try and delete things from my iPhone? It should still be able to "see" them, it just won't be able to access them. Will I have to turn off syncing apps while syncing with my external device unplugged?
Thanks very much for any help and insight! It is greatly appreciated as I deal with limited storage space and an expanding iTunes library.

This is all just a partial answer since details will depend upon how you want to do it.

You'll need to get it all onto one iTunes collection on your Mac Pro, then sync the devices to that.  iTunes only lets you transfer purchases from a device, otherwise you have to use third party software.
I guess you could also look into getting iTunes Match.
