I always have to render video?

I recently digitized video and when I edit with the video, I have to render each shot that I place on the timeline? Is there a setting I need to change on my computer?
Thanks

#28 Having to render every clip in the timeline
Shane's Stock Answer #28: When I put a clip in the timline, I have to render it before it will play. Why?
Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

  • Do I always have to Render?

    I'm new!
I noticed every time I insert a clip into the timeline it wants me to Render it before I can play it back. Is there anyway around this or do I have to render for all new clips and crossfades/Effects?
I think it's because of the file format I have which is not common for FCP. The format is .TOD coming from a JVC HD Camcorder. The source window playsback jerky, then I need to render it always after inserting.
Does this mean I need to convert all my HD camera files to a different format such as mov. or AVI.?
    Thanks in advance.

When working with HDV you most likely will need to render because of GOP structure. You should encode to pro res to avoid rendering of footage. HDV is GOP (group of pictures) meaning it has one frame with all the pixel information on it, the iframe, with subsequent frames only showing the changes to pixels between it and the iframe. This causes need for render when editing but allows HDV to be captured in smaller file sizes.
In basic terms when you encode your footage to pro res during transfer you make the file all iframe so every frame has all the pixel information in it. This makes for larger file sizes but there's no need to render. I'd get a RAID setup and convert to pro res for editing to avoid render.
Of course you'd still want to confirm that your sequence settings match your source footage and also turn real time to dynamic. Also, FWIW FCS2 already comes with the Quicktime Pro MPEG-2 video encoder plug-in so yeah you blew $20 for nothing on that one.

  • Should NOT have to render video but I do...

    Hi All.
I am having a strange issue. We're running Final Cut Pro HD at work and I just had a PA pull a LOT of footage from digibeta for me on a different machine. The capture settings are all the same on all our machines. I copied all footage from that machine to my faster one. Both machines have a Blackmagic card (NTSC 10 Bit) that is used for capture setting and sequence setting. All settings are the same on both machines. The Capture and Sequence settings match...So does anyone have any idea why when I bring all this footage into my FC project it's telling me that the footage compressor is "Uncompressed 10 Bit 4:2:2"? It should be Blackmagic. It's problematic because as it is now, I will now need to render all 3 hours of video instead of having it come in native. Please remember that I will need to lay this off using the Blackmagic card to digi. Please help if you can.
    Thanks!

G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Blackmagic Decklink Video card

Hmm...you guys might have something with the whole Apple Codec Vs. Blackmagic codec. I didn't know blackmagic had stopped using their own codec. Does that mean the codec you download off Decklinks site is actually the Apple codec? What the...?
Anyways, I just checked to see if the footage is coming in native on the other machine where it was pulled...and it is. No rendering needed. That might be a good example of a different codec. I'll get my IT guy on it now, since I don't have the time. I'll just work on that other machine, but I'll let you all know what the solution is.
    thanks everyone!

  • Hi.  I have Mac os x 10.4.11 with Safari 3.0.4.  I always have problems watching video clips due to buffering and I am trying to upgrade my system (unsuccessfully!!). Does anyone know which I should upgrade to as I tried downloading version 10.7. thanks!!

    http://www.macsales.com/macpro
OWC makes it easier to see what upgrades, not a real endorsement or that you need to but that would be one stop shop for components and get ideas.
    4 x 1GB RAM or above
10.6.8 preferably - run that for a month
dual boot and put Lion on another drive once you are satisfied
Lion does not have the support or drivers for the OEM 7300GT or do you want the X1900 Radeon, get ATI 5770
A backup drive or three, and start fresh on new system drives. Put the data on its own drive too.
Use Setup Assistant and/or Migration Assistant after the OS is up to date and you are satisfied (and make a disk image or clone the system for backup too).

  • Why do i always have to render even if only move the footage in the timelin

I just edited something in fcp and this wasn't happening, how come it is now.. must be a setting? Thanks!

Rendering is required usually when applying effects or when the timeline codec / dimension differs from the clip settings. What are yours?
See Shane's tip on how to handle non-standard codecs...

  • Why do I have to render every video clip?

Every clip I put in FCE has to be rendered, why? Is there a setting I have to change? I have a canon hv-20 and I'm using the 1080i setting in the easy setup menu. Thanks for any help!

If they are identical then I can't help you. There is no reason why you would have to render. Which is that you have to render, video or audio or both? The render line is divided is divided into two thin stripes, upper for video, lower for audio.

  • Do I always have to explicitly render?

    Hi all -
I'm new to FCE (using FCE 3.5.1 on MacBook Pro) and have found that I often have to render imported files when i move them to the timeline. For instance ... i have taken an AVI file, converted it to a .mov file with ffmpegx and imported it into FCE. I grab a sample section and move it from the viewer to the canvas so I can see it in the timelines at the bottom. However, with this type of file i find I always have to render. Is this normal? Seems a little tedious if i have to do this every time. Is there a way to have it "automatically render?"
I've played with FCE 2 and iMovie so I'm pretty ignorant so my apologies in advance if this is obvious or I'm not being clear.
    Thanks!

FCE is a DV / HDV application. It's best if you convert your material to DV prior to importing it into FCE. In ffmpegx make sure you select the DV codec when you do your conversion. By selecting MOV in ffmpegx you are probably getting MPEG4 in a MOV container, which is why you have to render in FCE.
MPEG Streamclip is an alternative converter that seems more popular with FCE users in this forum.

  • Why do I have to render all of my HDV 1080i60 MultiCam Sequence

I have two HDV camra angle's in my multicam sequence.
I did realtime cuts between them but why do i need to render the whole sequence. I have half an hour of HDV, that takes along time. It also take's hours to render a portion of the video that i sent to motion for titling. This is really slowing me down.
Do you always have to render a multicam sequence?

No it wouldn't have to render except for effects that aren't real time.
The problem with HDV is it's not an all "i" frame format. Only 1 in 15 frames is a whole frame, the rest of the frames only contain the difference between the frames before and after (sort of)... but if you don't edit on an i frame, the video has to be rewritten in effect, creating a new GOP structure. (Group of pictures with an i frame every 15... in long gop anyway... there's short gop too.)
Most all other codecs are all i frame codecs.. every frame's information is there... so it's easier for the computer to deal with it.
DVCPROHD will create files about 4 times larger than HDV, but they're still small enough to play from a firewire drive... no need for a fast array.

  • Now I have to render everything - never had to before

When I first started my video I could add text on top of a clip in the sequence and I never had to render anything. Now towards the end anytime I add text on top of a clip, I always have to render. All I'm doing is adding a Lower 3rd text box.
The only thing that has changed that I can think of is that the video is now almost two hours long. I'm curious to know why now all text added in has to be rendered when in the beginning it did not. Thanks.

Well as your project gets more complicated you are adding to the things fcp and the mac have to keep track of so you are adding to system overhead. If you take a bunch of stills and edit them into a new timeline, you'll see the first stills will be real time and the later stills will require a render. Seems to be the way things are.

  • Should I have to render P2 imported video

    I have a powermac G5 with 3gb ram.
When I import P2 video it comes in needing to render the video.
I have used easy set-up to set it at 1080p25 (which is what the original footage is set to).
Do you normally have to render or is there a setting I have wrong?

disregard - just figured out - now I just have to figure out how to delete topics

    2) I can not get playback faster than 1 fps if there are any filters applied - the pre-render / buffering isn't working at all.
    3) I can not "Render Video" by choosing either "Render Video from the menus or the Export Arrow button in the GUI.

Dilip: Do you have any other questions for me today other than this?
Tesselator Tess: Which department would be relevant to my issue?
Dilip: We do not have Support for Trial version, Support for Trial is only available in Support Portal.
Tesselator Tess: I'm not asking for support for the trial version at this point. I am asking for a department name.
Dilip: I am sorry, there is no Team that supports for Trial.
Tesselator Tess: How about for the purchased product?
Dilip: The Support for the Issue is available with our Photoshop Team but they can only help you with a valid Photoshop Serial Number.
Tesselator Tess: Is there a list of known issues on-line somewhere?
Tesselator Tess: there isn't at the two URLs you already provided BTW.
Dilip: I am sorry we do not have more information on that.
Tesselator Tess: OK, thanks. Do you realize that in the time it took to tell me "Sorry Charlie” 5 times you could have told me of a fix or looked in your DB for related issues?
    Tesselator Tess:
Dilip: I am sorry for the inconvenience.
    Tesselator Tess: Me too.
Dilip: Do you have any other questions for me?
Tesselator Tess: No, just those two.
Dilip: Thank you for contacting Adobe. Good Bye.
    This chat session has ended.
    2:48 PM
Is the trial version of Photoshop CC a function-limited (cripled) eddition or is it the full-featured version same as the purchased product? I had always thought they were the full versions but I thought I might check to make sure.

  • Problem creating/maintaining a browser surface where gstreamer can render video

I have developed a Mozilla plug-in to render video in a browser page. In an HTML page, the area reserved for video is marked with <object> tag.
On every encounter of "<object id="customvideoplugin" width="640" height="480" type="application/x-custommedia">Custom Media Plugin failed to load..</object>" statement in the .html file, Firefox browser loads my custom plug-in and calls NPP_SetWindow(NPP instance, NPWindow* window).
Inside, NPP_SetWindow(), I create a window through XCreateSimpleWindow API, using parent Window ID parameter received from the browser.
I further use this X11 video ID return by XCreateSimpleWindow to pass to GStreamer to start rendering the video on it.
I am able to see the video playing in the browser.
The problem happens when I move away from the page and come back to the video page. Expectation is, I should be able to see the video playing. Playback is never stopped even when we move away from the page, audio is always heard.
When we come back to video page, I see call to NPP_SetWindow again, but with a different Parent Window ID, which I cannot assign to the existing window. Creating a new window is not an option, because then I would have to stop existing playback and restart it from the same position in a new window, which would cause flicker.

FLOUNDERING....that is SUCH an appropriate word. Seems to be a lot of that going on in this forum! NESTING is what I want to do...but I think I'll try exporting each segment as a QT .mov first....that way, when I start playing with the nest....I'll have something to back me up.
THANKS GUYS! Seriously, there is NOTHING about this in the manual that I can see so far...but the manuals jump around so much, who knows.
    Much appreciated!

  • Importing leaves me with audio a few seconds off and I still have to render

When I import the last few times, I have to render the sequence after wards. this means that I cannot edit from the sequence in the file. Frustrating! Also, my sound is always a few seconds off after I import. So I have to shift the sound or the video over to match.
Anyone know why is this happening?
    FCP 5.0.4

That is all the details that I can think of putting up. Oh and I have 400gigs available on my drive if that makes any difference.
Also, i just digitized again, but only for one minute of footage and it was fine. So I cheered and said yahhhh! So then I went to digitize the entire one hour tape again, and the sound is still off.
so I though maybe it drifted because for some reason it didn't record at the same rate. But the beginning is off by the same amount as the end and middle. I just don't get why this is happening. I export and save the sequence, I can then edit from the browser, but it is my understanding that I will lose some quality that way.
So, until I can figure this out, I'm stuck with editing by browsing the footage in the actual timeine instead of the browser. eeeeeek!
