I have just purchased an Ipad 2 but cannot seem to find a useful manual. Also, it shuts down after a few minutes - is there some setting to keep it open.

You can download a copy of the manual from here : http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/ - there should also be a shortcut for it in Safari.
And by turning off, do you mean that it goes into sleep mode and you have to press a button ? If so, then you can extend the time via Settings > General > Auto-Lock

I want to be able to sync my iPad with both iCal on the iMac and Outlook 2010 in Microsoft Office 2010, installed in Parallels 7. What happens is that when I connect the iPad to the iMac (USB) it syncs directly with iCal via iTunes. How can I get the iPad to sync Outlook 2010 in Parallels via iTunes as well? Do I have to download and install another copy of iTunes in Windows 7 in Parallels?

Don't think that's possible as iOS devices can only be synced to one iTunes library at a time.
Is there a specific reason you're using Outlook?

You should be able to control the function that the side switch isn't controlling via the left-hand end of the taskbar : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085 - is the icon that appears there (notification mute or rotation lock) indicating that that function is 'off' ?

Is the kit fully inserted, and which part of the kit are you using, the SD reader or the cable to camera ? If the SD reader, then how did the photos get on the card - if you copied them on from your computer then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.

A reset should help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off button for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo reappears. When the logo appears, release both buttons and await restart.
