I am about to buy an iPad 3rd gen. Do I get a Smart Cover?

I was planning on buying a polyurethane Smart Cover at the same time as the iPad, and this would be the only protection I would have for it.
That being said, I own an iPhone 4S, and have never used a screen protector or case for it.  It goes in my pocket basically whenever I am not using it.  I have some light scratches on the back glass that you can see only in the right light, and nothing on the screen.
Based on that, would you say that this will be enough protection for me?  Also, for those of you who own an iPad and a Smart Cover, do you recommend the cover?  I have read on this forum from time to time that the Smart Cover can scratch the iPad where it hinges to it, and that sometimes the screen gets scratches from dirt that is being held there by the cover itself.
I am not really paranoid, but I don't want to be on this forum in 2 or 3 weeks asking what I can do about the scratches on the screen of my iPad.

The Smart Cover only protects the front screen. You'll get scratches on the back plus it provides no protection for a small drop.
I added a screen protector as it was cheap insurance protection.
For my iPad 2, I bought an Adesso case/keyboard model WKB-2000CD http://www.adesso.com/en/component/content/article/49-coming-soon/455-wkb-2000cd .html Works great & looks good. The keyboard is easier to use than Apple's on-screen keyboard. Do a Google search using the model number to get the best price. About the same price as Apple's covers & it covers the whole iPad. Although the new iPad  is slightly thicker, it should fit this case.

  • IPad (4th gen) screen scrambled (static) with smart cover.

    Hello-
The screen on my iPad becomes scrambled when connecting/disconnecting smart cover.  (image attached) I am afraid that something has been damaged by the magnets.  Is there a solution to fix this?  I could not find much help doing various searches.
    Thank you

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • IPad (3rd Gen) - iTunes Library larger than storage amount

    Hi all.
I'm looking into buying an iPad (3rd Gen) from amazon. I currently have a 12GB iTunes library. I would prefer to have buy a 16GB iPad for the price, but that leaves me with less than 4GB. How do you use the iCloud to only down load some parts of my music library so I can still have pictures and apps and movies?
    Thanks!

    Hi Josh,
I have exactly the same issue.  I also have many songs I purchased on iTunes that will not download.  It seems random.  I have 3 recently purchased albums that only half the tracks on one album will download, most on another, but only 2 on another.  It's annoying!  I keep tapping download and they just give up saying Cant connect to iTunes'. Even though it is.
Regardless, I have too exactly the symptoms you described, but had them periodically before today.  Again, not sure if its related, but have you recently got an Apple TV?

  • Would you buy a 64gb iPad 3rd Gen or an iPad Mini 16 gb if you could purchase either for $320?  Thank you

Would you buy a 64gb iPad 3rd Gen or an iPad Mini 16 gb if you could purchase either for $320?  Thank you

I know your question has been answered by Demo and agree. And I agree that I would stay away from the ipad 3 that was discontinued after only months on the market.
That said, I'm not sure where you were getting an ipad 3 for that cost - a friend, a store, an official reseller? I would be very careful of that.
If you decide to buy a used ipad or even a new 16 gb mini, I strongly suggest you only buy it through Apple's online only certified refurbished store. They come and go as they are refurbished by Apple, so if you see what you want, buy it. An ipad mini 32 gb is now $339 in the refurb store. That's only $20.00 more than you're willing to pay.
Personally, I'd go for the regular sized ipad with more space, but I would pay more if necessary and only buy it at the Apple online refurb store. If you buy an outside ipad, you usually only get the rest of the warranty if any time is still on it. Some resellers do not give any warranty. You might not know if it's been dropped and is working now but might quit soon, etc. You could end up with a demo version from a store, the battery could be on its way out, etc. There have been such stories on here.
Each refurbished ipad and mini comes with a brand new front and back cover, a brand new battery, and a full one year warranty , including 90 days of phone support. It will come in the white box with the charger just as a new one does, with free and fast shipping.
We have had two 64 gb refurbed ipad 2's from the Apple store for almost a year and a half. They have been great!
(As others have and almost always suggest, get as much space as you can because you cannot increase that. Many end up wanting to do more than they planned as they learn about new apps and all they can do with their ipad. Also, updating apps also will take up more space.)
And you don't get 16gb or 32 gb, etc. Some space is used to run the ios and apps that come with the ipad that are not removable.
Oh. I needed to add that through the refurb store, you'll get it with ios 6 still installed.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have an app called cartoon HD on my iphone and this app is no longer available I am about to buy an ipad, if I back this up with the same Apple ID will it share the app to the iPad?

I have an app called cartoon HD on my iphone and this app is no longer available I am about to buy an ipad, if I back this up with the same Apple ID will it share the app to the iPad?

You can copy the app to your computer's iTunes library by connecting the phone to it and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases - an actual backup (either on your computer's iTunes or to the cloud) doesn't contain the actual apps, just their content and settings, for a restore to work the app needs to be either in your computer's iTunes library (for and iTunes backup/restore) or still in the store (for an iCloud backup/restore). Or you could just sync the app from your computer's iTunes (which will only install the app, not any previous content)

  • IPad 3rd gen 32GB or 4th gen 16GB?

    I'm in a dilemma.
My budget gives me a choice between the iPad 3rd gen 32GB or the  4th gen 16GB model. Both are Wi-Fi only, which is fine for me.
What would people recommend? Should I go for the faster CPU or the bigger storage?
Until it was recently stolen I had a 16GB iPad 2, and while I wouldn't say I had loads of space, I got by with it just fine. But I'm guessing these newer models will need more storage.
    Any thoughts/suggestions/opinions welcome.

Where are you going to buy an iPad 3? Apple doesn't sell them anymore. Buy a refurbished 32GB iPad 4 at Apple's on-line store. A refurb is cheaper than the new one, but has a new screen, back and battery and the same 1 year warranty.

  • IPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes

iPad 3rd gen no longer charges unless shut off and not recognized by iTunes.  Done 2 resets, used original charger and cable and bought brand new charger and cable from Apple store.  Nothing works.  This started yapping after the iOS 7.1.1 update.

Common troubleshooting is to try a different USB port and to give your ipad a reset. (hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot)
You can also try on a different computer to see if it's the ipad or the computer.
When you charge, do you try to charge plugged into the wall? that's the best way to charge.
If you go through all that and it's still not working hten it may be time to make an appointment at your local apple store and have them check it out

Following ultimately helped me : Make sure that you are logged in at the App Store App or iTunes App with your apple ID and password with a US account. Turn your iPad off and on and than you should see the Radio button again. It won't work if you are logged on with a foreign account. If you are not logged in at all, it worked, too.

  • My Ipad 3rd Gen isn't being recognized by my computer...

My Ipad 3rd Gen isn't being recognized by my computer / (doesn't show up in itunes)...
I have tried to use it with the following:
    Windows 8 64
    Windows 7 64
    Windows 7 32
    Mac OS (newest)
    All tried with Itunes 10.7.
I bought it about 3 weeks ago and activated it through WiFi.
It has never been recognized on any computer I have tired it with.
I also tried to connect in DFU mode(didnt work)
Do I have a defective Ipad?

make sure you have itunes installed on that computer. itunes comes with the essential ios drivers which are needed in order for your computer to recognize your iphone.

Do you clean your iPad screen?  Do not use standard window cleaners, with ammonia or alcohol, like Windex, but a damp towel, followed by a micro-fibre cloth is recommended.  There are also cleaners you can buy which are specifically designed for iPad/iPhone devices, such as iClean from Monster.

  • Ipad (3rd gen) wont sync

    Hello,
Well, i just bought an Ipad 3rd gen (my first Apple product) and i'm trying to sync it with itunes (USB).
I have Windows 7 64 bits with the lastest Itunes available. When i plug the Ipad, it shows correctly in Itunes.
However, when i'm trying to sync pictures or music, Itunes says everything is ok but there's nothing on my Ipad afterall.
When i'm trying to sync apps downloaded with Itunes, it says that this app cannot be synchronized
Tried USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ... same problem
Does anybody knows anything about issues with USB ? (maybe somekind of controlers are not well supported)
    FYI :
    Ipad 3rd gen
    OS : Windows 7 64bits
    Mobo : Gigabyte X58 UD7 (ICH10R)
    Lastest drivers available
    Lastest Itunes available
    USB cable provided with Ipad
    Thansk in advance

Might want to try and restore the device and see what happens. Also are you connected to iCloud which backs up all your files? If so might want to try and toggle with that. As for the music n stuff, is iTunes actually showing anything being synced on the top bar (Where is shows the syncing status of your device)?. If nothing seems to be done, or the process is completed very quickly, you might not have selected anything in the toption of iTunes.
Not sure how much i helped, but hope you can get it up and running!

  • Unable to use iCloud Backup on iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.0.1

Hi, I have been unable to use iCloud Backup for several weeks on both my iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 6.0.1 & my iPhone 4, iOS 6.0.1
iCloud Backup is set to On on both devices. It did backup once or twice, since I installed the iOS 6.0.1, then it stopped working altogether.
I hope someone can help me.

I know. In my post I said ....
"remove the all day event or change the event from all day - in whatever application on your computer that you sync the calendar from and them sync again to remove the event from the iPad calendar."
You will need to do this from your computer. If you do not use your computer to sync with iTunes, you will not be able to get around this.
However, I should have asked of this only happens when you are trying to view events in March, so maybe I misled you. I apologize. Try this now. Quit the calendar app completely in the recents tray and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Charging iPad One vs iPad 3rd gen via USB...

just got an iPad 3rd gen.  As I've read here, apparently, the PC's USB port doesn't supply enough power to make the 3rd gen battery charging icon say "charging".  Instead, it reads "not charging".  However, it initially DOES say 'charging', before changing to 'not charging' a couple of minutes later.
Question:  my iPad 1st gen ALWAYS charges via PC USB port.  Why?  Both AC chargers are 10 watts I believe, so why would the 1st gen charge while the third gen doesn't?  Does the 3rd gen require more charging watts than the 1st gen unit does?

Using the 10W charger, an iPad 1 will charge in about 3-4 hours, however, the iPad 3 requires about double the time. How long does it take to charge your iPad 1 using the PC's USB port?
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • IPad 3rd gen not charging via wall socket

Ok I'm really annoyed right now, my iPad 3rd gen has suddenly decided not to charge when plugged via adapter to the wall socket. I thought it was the cables fault so I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger, came home and I have the same problem. When I plug my iPad to the wire to charge the battery sign flashes between between charging and not charging and then I get a message saying maybe this device is not compatible with the iPad and now I just keep getting the message saying "not charging". So I plugged the wire to my MacBook and yay the iPad charges, but its a little bit inconvinient for me and I prefer charging via the wall socket. I've tried everything resetting etc I've even done the software update (ios7.1). Can someone please tell me what's going on, am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated! Oh I've also ordered the apple 12w adaptor charger, do you think this will solve the problem? Thank you

You, say, " I thought it was the cables fault", but then you say, "I went into the currys store and bought an apple charger". Did you buy a charger or a cable?
The problem could be the charger. If so, the new 12W charger should solve the problem.
