I am about to move my Time Capsule - is there anything I need to do before I power it down?  I have a recent backup.

I'm out of time - gonna unplug it.  I searched the manual for "power, hutdown, oving, etc" and found no warnings.  I'll let you know how it goes in a few days.

Your files are unaffected by a reset.. no reset via the reset button on the TC harms, deletes or does anything to your files.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Here is how to do a fully manual setup for TC which is sometimes necessary with Mavericks in particular.
Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule

What about when using the "Time Capsule" HD as the external disk, especially when it is connected by ethernet cable? I'm having trouble getting it to work at all. Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine backup. Already have a wireless network that works fine so no need to mess with it. We get the internet via cable company and their modem is upstairs and the Time Capsule is downstairs in the basement. The latest error message was about it could not backup as it was already in use (should have written it down before clicking OK and moving on.

    See if this helps...

  • How to I access a sparsebundle on my time capsule? There is no matching profile

    Hi,
Sadly I had my iMac and MBP stolen. I've replaced the MBP and successfully restored from Time Capsule but there is no profile showing for the imac.  There is however a sparsebundle for the imac but no idea how I can access it. Any help or advice would be great...!

    See Q17 here.

You can also migrate the info from the iMac backup to the new computer or a USB drive plugged into it.
    See. http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
There is setup assistant and migration assistant and info for older and newer versions of Mac OS.
Sorry about you getting your stuff stolen.. it is report here a couple of times a week I guess. People trying to recover their files from stolen computers.

  • How can I copy programs (iWorks) and files from Time Capsule to my HD manually? The problem is that the migration assistant does not recognize my backup file and the user on the TC. (If I open the TC on finder, it it there though)

I have 2 MacBooks (1 Air and 1 Pro) at home that back-up to a Time Capsule.  I'd like to buy an external Thunderbolt drive at work to have as an additional back-up (so that were there to be a fire/water damage/etc) I would not lose both the computer and the backup.
Will Time-Machine support autobackups to 2 different devices?
I'd like for it to be able to backup to an external Thunderbolt drive attached to my thunderbolt display when I dock the MacBook Air to it.
Does anyone know if this will occur automatically, or if I will have to manually select backup disk?
    thanks

Yes, with Mountain Lion you can do this, but I will leave the explanation to Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini:

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • Time Capsule disappears from Airport Utility, need to restart to find it.

I got a new Time Capsule for Christmas. Our household was using a D-Link router. The network was working fine for a Macbook, iMac, 2 x iPhones, PC Laptop and desktop. The two laptops are upstairs and connect wirelessly to the Time Capsule and an airport Express connected to stereo is set to extend the network.
Since Christmas the laptops are losing contact with the Time Capsule. At first I'd physically disconnect the modem and TC and the TC would reappear. Finding this annoying I rang Apple. I was told to edit locations in networks, add a location and basically reselect my network. I was told to monitor this, but that it should help. The TC went off airport utility again (the green light was still on), so i went through the process of edit location again and it worked. I posted the problem in macbook internet, thinking it was a macbook issue as my iPhone could still connect to the network and have internet. People suggested i do a power cycle. The next time the network crashed I performed a power cycle on every item connected to the network and turned on in correct order.
Tonight my macbook and pc laptop lost connection with the internet again. I had to physically take the TC and modem of power to get the network back again.
This is happening every couple of days, and I'm now sure it's a Time Capsule issue, this issue didn't happen with my D-Link router. I have my Macbook completing Time Machine Backups wirelessly, and when we lose connection with the TC, backups are delayed. Could the Time Machine backups be causing this loss of connection?
I'm going to call Apple and see if they have another solution, but was checking to see if others have had this problem and maybe a solution?

    I just purchased a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB (ME 182 AM/A)
I broke my own rules.. as I saw one going really cheap and our currency is dropping like crazy so i thought I better get one .. stupid idea.. it lasted less than week and then refused to even power on.. It has gone back for replacement.
For your situation I think the problem is not the TC as much as it is yosemite.. but it is the combo.
Try the things I have suggested in this thread.. they have worked or helped other people.
    Time Capsule keeps losing connectivity

  • The Time Capsule is sold in the US with a 120 V power cable!!

I purchased a Time Capsule in the United States. I'm taking the machine overseas where we have 220V power. The machine will autoswitch from 100V to 240V but unfortunately the power cord provided is rated at 120V.
Apple won't sell me a 220V power cable. *I'm assuming that they exist because Apple sells these things worldwide.*
What's scary is that both an Apple Store Expert and a 1800MYAPPLE salesman told me that using the cable wouldn't be a problem. I just needed to buy a World Traveler Kit.
Does anyone have a source for a third party 220V replacement cable for the Time Capsule?

The time capsule appears to use a standard "figure 8" cable. They are commonly used for razors and other low power devices. Take the cable that came with it to an electronics store and you will likely find one that matches.
There are a couple small variations. Some are more square, and others don't have the indent in the center.
Here is a cable at Amazon.com that will likely fit:
    http://www.amazon.com/Power-European-Notebook-Figure-Conn/dp/B000V6Y6AI/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1205290832&sr=8-1
(but I would rather hold it next to the TC original cable to make sure it fits)
FWIW: The Macbook power supplies can run with the same type of cable if needed. not as pretty as the cord that comes with it, but it works.

  • Do I need Time Capsule for my back up needs?

In my office, I have an iMac 24" 10.5.5. My secretary uses a PC and the server is a PC. At home, I use my Macbook, and my wife and kids each have laptops (4 of them total).
I want to make sure I 'back up' everything properly at the office and at home. Is there a way to backup both onto a single deal like Time Capsule? Or do I have to have two separate units? Is Time Capsule a wireless backup, or does it have to be connected to the computer you want to backup?
    Help!
    Bob

The Time Capsule is not really meant to used as a portable device, so it would have to be kept in a single location. Presumably this single location would be at your office where your iMac is. The only problem with one location is that your MacBook would only backed up when (or if) it's at your office. And I don't know if that happens and/or if you're away from your office for extended periods would that be acceptable (to not have a backup during that time).
Both computers could backup to one Time Capsule assuming there is enough disk space to do so and I'm unaware of how large the hard drives are that you have in each computer. And the Time Capsule can backup devices over both wired and wireless connections.

You could try Events -> Autosplit Selected Event
And you always need a back up. Always.

worksafe's link with the KeyChain fix is good.
This usually happens when KeyChain has two entries for the same WiFi network.
If repair did not work you can follow the manual steps:
    Disconnect WiFi
Open KeyChain from Applications / Utilities and find your WiFi network entry(ies) and delete all of them.
    Connect to your WiFi again.

  • Problems playing movies from Time Capsule

I am having a problem playing movies from my Time Capsule to my Apple TV. I can make them work but have to go through the following process: I have to play the movie through iTunes and then stop it, and then go play the movie on apple TV. I have to do this each time I want to watch one of the movies. Any thoughts on this issue?

Hopefully this information will help. I have an aiport extreme connected directly to my Cable Modem. I then setup the Time Capsule to extend the network updstairs. I have everything running on 802.11n. Wireless connection is great and I get about 13-14mb download speeds when I do a speedtest.
I must say though, copying data to the Timecapsue via wireless is slow...
I checked my apple TV this morning, and the first movie I clicked on worked great, so did the second one, then I tried a third and got the following error: "The Selected Video could not be played. The Format was not recognized"
Then I went back to play the original two that worked, and they now gave me the same error... it almost looks like it is looking connection to them, or synching or something..

  • Playing movies from time capsule

I was looking for a new hard drive to back up my macbook ... the time capsule seems expensive.  I had some questions about it.
If i have the 3TB time capsule, thats more then enough to use time machine and keep it backed up.
    1.  Can I also use it as an external HD that i want to keep files on to save room on my laptop?
    2.  If I have a selection of movies that I keep on the time capsule, can I access them right through the time capsule, and have my macbook turned off?  or do I have to keep my macbook open for use of iTunes?
    Thanks for your help!

    1.  Can I also use it as an external HD that i want to keep files on to save room on my laptop?
Yes, but let's say that you move some important files from your laptop to the Time Capsule....and to save room on the laptop, you delete the files from the laptop. Now, you have only one version of those important files...and they are on the Time Capsule.
Would you really consider keeping only one version of your important files.....with no backup? In other words, what will happen to your important files when.....not if....the Time Capsule drive has a problem?
    2.  If I have a selection of movies that I keep on the time capsule, can I access them right through the time capsule, and have my macbook turned off?
    No
or do I have to keep my macbook open for use of iTunes?
    Yes
You might want to consider something like this.........add an external hard drive to your Mac and  move all of your media files over to that drive.  Then, the Time Capsule can back up both your Mac and the external hard drive......so you have backups of everything on your Mac and the external hard drive.
