I am beginning to hate my Mac

Pllleeaasse help!
Since loading SL and Office 2008 I have had no end of problems with this iMAC. It crashes. wont empty pen drives, and Word closes its self so often its driving me nutts. Now I am not particularly techy but I have tried to look for any solutions but its a jungle of info, so if any one can help i would be eternally grateful.
If this carries on I will have to return to a MS PC. Before SL I loved my MAC

Hi, Sherriwillow & welcome to the forums
The general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also. Font Book will help you to identify which are which, along with errors & warnings to help you along. Get into it and come back if you need clarification.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
By all means be sure any 3rd party apps are Snow Leopard compatible.
If issues continue, you may consider walking that portable in to the nearest Apple store and asking for opinions from the staff.
Good luck in any case.

  • I'm Starting to hate my Mac!

A few months ago i noticed that my iMac was going really slow.. i sometimes was waiting 5 mins for things to load. I only usually have my internet and possibly iTunes open but i started to only run one thing at a time. I did a bunch of clean up and got rid of a lot of stuff that wasnt being used. Then one day it froze. 20 mins later it was still frozen and i couldnt force quit. So i had to restart using the power button. When it turned back on i got the apple for abut 3 seconds before a gray screen came down saying that i had to restart my computer.. well i'm pretty sure i had just done that... but i tried it again. same problem. i even unplugged the stupid thing and left it off and tried again.. thid went on for about 4 hours. So i had to reboot from disk which wouldnt let me archive and install. so i had to delete everything. and i had a lot of projects on garage band. after the reinstall it worked ok for about a week before it got super slow again. now its still slow and my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875 drive is making horrible sounds and disk are coming out scratched and glitchy or missing half the file. i have an appointment for a phonecall with apple tomorrow.. so hopefully there will be an easy solution. my main concern right now is how do i recover the files i lost during reinstall? The only ones i didnt have backed up were garage band which i need back. and what could be the problem with my dvd drive?

I am not sure how you lost everything if you only performed an Archive and Install.
If you have Apple Care, Apple will most likely deem the drive as bad and it may be replaced. In this case the drive will not be returned to you to get the data off. So it is in your best interest to try to get it off your self. Now Apple may give you an option to help recover the data, not sure, but make sure to ask them.
If they do not offer data recover as an option, then your best bet is to install OSX on an external drive in which you can boot from, then you can get your data off the internal drive and onto the external drive. The data should still be on the internal drive if you only performed an Archive and Install.
If you have access to another Intel Mac this will allow you to do the same thing using Target Disk Mode with a firewire cable.
As Far as the DVD drive, not sure... Could be the reason for the entire problem but I believe that to be unlikely. It's probably a problem of its own.

  • Why does Time Capsule hate older Macs running Tiger??

Time Capsule has ruined my network and my bloody Saturday!
I have never had this much trouble with an Apple product (at least since OS 8)...and I just waited on hold for over 64 minutes and then got disconnected. Sorry if this is jumbled, but it's been one lousy day!!
I got my Time Capsule, and I was looking forward to setting it up for backup once I got past the "easy" part of the router setup...uh huh...easy...for my new iMac (running 10.5.2) , no prob. For my 2002 Power Mac running 10.4.11 and an original AirPort card, another story. Just as well that my old PowerBook G4 is still at work.
After some struggles, I gave up setting up the more secure WPA password for the G4 and reverted to a far less secure WEP password. At least that way I could get the G4 connected wirelessly.
If I want to access drives connected to my G4 from the iMac, no problems; I can also see the Time Capsule drive from the G4; however I cannot for the life of me get the G4 to successfully mount the iMac (which was no problem before I switched routers).
I was using a dLink router (which I gave away because I thought I wouldn't need it anymore), and getting online wirelessly while connecting my iMac to the old Power Mac G4 via Gigabit Ethernet for file sharing on occasion. When I first set up the Time Capsule, I tried to keep the ethernet cable connected directly between the two machines (as I had successfully with the dlink). While the iMac could mount the G4 readily, the G4, despite seeing the iMac, couldn't. Even in iChat using Bonjour, the G4 could receive messages and send messages back to the iMac (in an established chatroom), but it would always fail if I tried to send a "private" message...
sigh I just tried again...I always just had 169.1.1.2 and 169.1.1.3 as manual IP's for my ethernet connection, while mainintaining wireless connections to router (and internet); never a problem...now, even with that &*?&! time Capsule completely out of the loop, the G4 refuses to connect to the iMac...simply won't do it (even when it sees it!)...now because of the snowstorm in Canada, can't even reach Apple...nice real nice...wish I never heard of Time Capsule...
Does anybody have any way to work around this crap??? This is ridiculous!

Well I hade so much trouble to change my AP Express and when it arrives, my TC... to put my macs in a subnet. And that's true, I had to create a new network profile. It seems there was a problem with the normal one, but I can't say from where.
The problem I still have is that it cannot memorize one time for all the device order. It's always changing and gives me troubles.

  • This is what I hate about Mac...

This is what bugs me about running mac!  I have sent various crash reports to this forum (A support forum hosted by APPLE).
No one has ever pointed me in the right direction.  I don't know who else to ask?  Is there anyone?
Lots of people seem to think their Mac is great.
    Mine keeps crashing!
If I want to run Logic 9 I have to spend $2500 because I would need a New Mac pro.
If my Mac didn't give me so much grief I would spend the money on a new one.
I am convinced that I should get a PC! It must be more stable!
    grrrr

I only see one post about crashing, and it got responses but you never followed up.
Like pancenter said, try reinstalling the latest version of 10.5 from the combo updater.  I would do whatever hardware tests you have available,  it's possible you have bad memory or a hard drive starting to fail.
If that doesn't help, I'd try running Logic with no hardware hooked up and no third party plugins.  If you still get crashes that points to a problem with Logic, if not start adding those back in a little at a time since one of those may be causing the crashes.
In your other post you mentioned switching to Cubase.  They don't support G5 any more with their latest versions, only intel.  I don't who if any of the audio devs is still supporting PPC, if you want the latest software you may need to get a new machine at some point.  The good news is that even an iMac or laptop will probably run circles around the machine you have now.

  • I am beginning to HATE Lion!

Today alone, I have had to hard quit in the middle of Word, and Excel and in Safari and Chrome. My computer freezes and I get the ball of death or nothing. It takes me two or three times to relog back in, it freezes after I enter my password! It is gosh awful slow on EVERYTHING, even geting on the internet. I touch the power button and walk away it is so slow.  I have NO log in items.
I have repaired permissions and allowed Spotlight to reconfigure.
I have content in the cloud and use face time but I am ready to give it up and go back to Snow Leopard. My husband will not go to LION because of all this. I sure wish I hadn't......
    Any suggestions????

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • I hate itunes!  I am beginning to hate my Ipad!

It freezes my PC, wont recognize my Ipad, wont sync with my Ipad...  I have reinstalled/uninstalled it but still wont fix the **** problem!
Itunes then just installed an update and now it wont even run with the update!  What is going on!!!!!!
What is wrong with apple?  Is this the kind of support they give their products?

it is extremely frustrating...  i just bought this around two weeks ago and i am thinking of returning it...
I have 4GB of ram and it doesnt use all of it... nevertheless, it still slows the PC to a crawl...  I even reformatted the whole PC just to ensure that it was clean....  and reinstalled everything...  I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled Itunes about 4 times now....  and by God i am ******! • I am beginning to hate my ipod

ok ive had my new 30GB 5th generation ipod since december of 2005 and i have loved it. but a few weeks ago, i plugged the ipod to my computer and it got frozen on the "do not disconnect" screen. now the computer recognizes that the drive is in use but it does not show up in my computer and it does not update in itunes. then everytime i unplug it, it stays frozen, so i reset it and everytime i reset i feel that it is getting worse and worse. now i would restore it to factory settings but its not recognizing it on the updater so i can not do that. somebody PLEASE HELP i have tryed everything!!!
    Northgate   Windows XP   year: 2001

This link works just fine, but I did two things differently. I didn't reinstall Itunes and the Ipod updater. First I wanted to reformat the ipod, then if that worked I saved myself some time re-installing stuff. WinXP pro also didn't come back when I right-clicked to reformat the drive. So...I brought up a command prompt and typed "format e:" e: was the drive my ipod nano was connected. It formatted just fine from the command prompt. Once Windows recognized the ipod (and could read it), Itunes popped up and started to download songs.
The only cause I can come up with is the automatic, "do you want to update your ipod message" came up. I clicked yes and probably should have clicked "no". Something got hosed in that update process.
    Thanks
**** you all, check out my thread on how to fix it!

  • OSX LION POOR PERFORMANCE MACBOOKPRO!!!!

SINCE UPGRADING TO LION IVE HAD REGRETS!
    HERES A FEW ISSUES!!
Sometimes hangs in Safari on full screen mode, and occationally not in full screen mode, sometimes have to force quit, wht the **** cant i get it to open on favourite sites?!!
iPhoto lags is slow, uploading to MobileMe soon to be iCloud uploads photos but then carrys on syncing and just sits!!
Mail sometimes doesnt update!!! Why!!! useless!!!
Overall running and efficiency of my Macbookpro is slower and lags, takes longer to start battery life down... etc etc..
Generally force quiting more apps than ever before!
I'm beginning to hate my Mac for the first time. Has anyone else had problems?
Are Apple going to release updates, can they fix this?
Where do we stand on refunds?
Is it possible to revert back to Snow Leopard without wiping the drive and all none backed up data?
Am I the only one with these issues! As its driving me NUTS!!!!

Lion likes 4GB, if you can't supply it, perhaps reverting back to Snow Leopard is best
My 2011 Machine with Snow Leopard just screams, I load these forum pages in a mere 2-3 seconds with Firefox, broadband tweaks and 20 Mb/s, it's faster than Lion and likely recent updates to Lion has slowed it down even more.
You can try cleaning everything, instructions below, else a backup, wipe and fresh install does wonders too.
If you do a fresh install, make sure you wipe (aka erase) with the security option > zero, map off as many failing sectors as you can.
Download and run ALL of the free OnyX initial checks, cleaning and maintainence aspects and reboot at the end (you can cancel the in between reboots)
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx
Scroll down of your OS X version is earlier. Please mention your OS X version, your Mac's model and if OnyX gives any warnings on the initial checks, it's important.
If you get a warning, please quit OnyX and backup your files off the computer as soon as possible and disconnect this drive.
You may have to hold c and boot off the 10.5 or 10.6 disks and run Disk Utility, or hold command r boot and run Disk Utility from the Lion Recovery Partition on the drive/OS X partition and Repair Disk, Repair Permisisons.
If Repair Disk gives any errors, please state so. Repair Permissions always gives a long list, it's ok.
After this is done, also run OnyX > Verify >Preferences and copy down any corrupt plist (preference) files.
Mention those here and I'll tell you where to find them to remove them.

  • Re-install quicktime manually

i need to re-install quicktime to make my itune work on my IMac G5. i re-installed my operating system recently and cant open itune (it's asking i update quicktime to 7.7,which i have done but still have the 7.2 version)
i'm beginning to hate my MAC as it's getting so frustrtaing for me now
    Sad Bukistate

    I found the answer, finally!
I reinstalled 10.4... and then manually upgraded quicktime... still didn't work.
Then when I tried using System Profiler to view my Firewire port and no camera appeared I realized something was up with the Firewire port (also I plugged the camera and cable into my G4 laptop and imovie and system profiler saw the camera... so I knew it wasn't the camera or cable).
I searched the support articles for imovie not seeing the camera... and found this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
which simply says to reset the firewire port... shut down and unplug all the cables from the computer including power for 3 to 5 minutes.
    IT WORKED.
Sometimes the most simple answer is staring you in the face.
Anyway. I'm glad it's working again.
Thanks for all the help everyone.

  • I have been using firefox since the beginning on my Mac G-5 until today when I was asked to upgrade my browser I did so and now I can't geet firefox as my browser anymore. I s there a way to reset to the old version? I really enjoyed using Firefox.

I can no longer get Firefox to work on my Mac G5 computer since I excepted the last suggested upgrade today. Now it says that it is not supported by this computer. I would like to know where to go to get the older version that I had been using 9.0.1 is not working for me.

  • How to make mac address gmail contacts overwrite the ones on my HTC Android phone - I don't want to sync - that makes the phone scramble and overwrite my computer.  I want to remove or correctly overwrite the phone information as I have done with iPad.

Please help - I am beginning to hate google, my android and gmail.  I have just wasted about 5 hours in a futile attempt to try and get my current Mac contacts list on my computer updated to my phone. I'm not that computer literate but I have looked up about google phone accounts, vCards, backing up contact lists, what SD on phones are, and God know what else.  I have searched the internet and tried all sorts of things and I still have a mac with a now correct contact list (after the iPad contacts scrambled it and I spent ages manually correcting them all) and a phone with an outdated contact list.  If you try and sync them the phone wants to overwrite the computer one just like the iPad did (would it be so **** hard to give you a choice on the phone as to which overwrites which!).  After all the  advice on the internet failed, I got the bright idea to completely delete all the ones on the phone and if it was empty of contacts the computer one could be exported to it.  Not as simple as it sounds.  First I backed up (I think) my computer contacts list. Numerous futile attempts to go through the phone options to globally delete all contacts did not work - they gave a warning message and you got to choose whether to continue or not, I did, and it looked like it might be working as it changed to zero data on the phone, but then they all popped back up again from God knows where from, but without their little added bits like pictures of the people.  So, I tried un- syncing the darn phone from  google and then deleting them globally.  That didn't work either.  I tried deleting them  all again and again and google would crash and not let me do it. It is absolutely ridiculous that this is so damned difficult to do (especially if you are not computer savvy) and that you cannot choose which device overwrites which when syncing. I gave up and ticked sync with Google again (not that it appears to do anything to the phone contact list at all).  So after 5 hours I am back to where I started from, with a phone showing all the same  incorrect contacts (but the pictures are back), which wants to overwrite the computer if I try any sort of sync, and no way to fix them except go into each one manually and try and do it - and how long would that take (and I've already wasted hours and hours fixing scrambled contact lists!).  I think I will do a print out of the computer contact list and just carry it around with me like an address book - so much bloody simpler.  So now I have a headache, am fighting an overwhelming urge to hurl the phone at the wall,  hoping for a heat wave to evaporate icloud things and am wishing I had bought an iPhone instead of the stupid HTC Android.  Can any one offer me any suggestions on how to get rid of the contacts on my phone and replace them with the ones in my mac address list - hopefully after that  they can sync to their hearts content and not stuff everything up again (which was why I unsynced google a while back - because the phone's list kept making stuff ups and scrambling and duplicating my computer contacts list).  Am I the only one on the planet having this problem or is there someone else out there who has had it and solved it.

Without "pretending" to be yourself on the other phone (change settings) there's nothing else you can do.
iOS devices are meant to be single user and can't view iCloud.com the same way a Mac or PC can do.
You need to find a desktop or laptop machine (Mac or PC) to log in at iCloud.

  • Someone tell me why is it so difficult to print from my Intel Mac Mini

I'm so frusrated at this Intel Mac Mini of mine. I wish honest to God that I never bought this evil little machine.
    I have the following printers:
    HP Photosmart 7550
    HP Laserjet 1012
    Canon MP830
I can't get anything to print! It so **** frustrating. I switched my wife from her WinXP to a Intel Mac Mini (10.4.6). She hates the Mac Mini because she can't print anything.
Why is it so difficult? Please someone enlighten me.
After months (not kidding) of searching on the web I was able to get the Photosmart 7550 to print using one of the gimp drivers, but I couldn't get it to change the paper type or quality. So that tells me I can't print any photos from my Mac. Need to use the WinXP box.
Then I was able to get the 1012 printing by selecting "open using rosetta" for the Printer Setup Utility, and selecting the "HP LaserJet 4 series - Gimp-Print v5.0.0-beta2". So now I could at least print BW docs. Great the Mac Mini is not a total waste. Then I updated software, which include the Mac mini SMC Firmware Update. I don't know what did it, but now I can't print to the 1012 anymore. ARGHH!
I tried deleting the Library/Printer/HP directory, Reseting the Printing System, Restarting the CUPs, Installing PDDs, Installing the gimp drivers. What the ****! Why do I need to do any of this? I thought the Mac was suppose to be so easy. With all those **** commercials talking about how the Mac can do anything a PC can do, you would think one of those things is being able to print.
Those people making those commericals should try using the "Printer Setup Utility" program. That will change their tune. First you have to search for your printer, then pick the Printer Model, and then pick the specific model. And God forbid you click to fast, oops you've now picked a generic printer, needs to start all over again. There's no back button. You've already committed to the generic printer type. Now you have to open the Printer Setup Utility again and delete the generic printer and go search for your printer again. Lame.
Don't get me started with the Canon MP 830. I thought, ok maybe its because the 1012 and 7550 are older printers. I'll go buy a new printer - they must have current drivers for that. Canon tells me that the MP 830 is only a single OS machine, meaning you can only connect it to a windows machine and only other windows machines can print from it, or connect it to a Mac, and only other Macs can use it - Again, Lame.
Really I wanted to love the Mac OS. When I first got it, I was loving it. But what good is it if I can't print. I searched the web and it seems I'm not the only person having issues with printing.
I hate this Intel Mac Mini with every fiber of my being. Ok, maybe my printing woes are only because it's a Intel chip, and the PPC macs are golden. But come on, if you can't print from a computer, what good is it?
Please, someone help me. Otherwise, anybody want to buy a Intel dual core Mac Mini?
mac mini duo core Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You have two different issues: HP and Canon.
I don't know if I believe the Canon people. Windows XP has lots of different print options. Try installing Bonjour on Windows and then setting up a networked, Color Apple Laserwriter PS printer using "http://macmini.local:631" (assuming macmini is the name of your Mac). I have done this before (though not on a Canon). I am sure Canon will only support a standard configuration and this is not quite standard. Give it a try. It doesn't sound like it can hurt anything in your current setup.
For the HP, you might have to just wait for an updated driver from HP. HP has always had this problem. They are a huge printer company and I'm sure they get Apple hardware and OS versions before anybody else in the world. And yet, it seems as if they don't even begin working on their drivers until Apple officially releases a new OS. HP drivers are always the last to show up for a new OS and the first to break. If you get it working under MacOS 10.4.6, and then upgrade to 10.4.7, it is very likely that the HP drivers will stop working.
Unlike some of the other big companies, HP seems to have made the transition from Classic MacOS to MacOS X seamlessly. Their printer driver software works just as well on MacOS X as it did under MacOS.

  • I have Mac OS 10.4.11 and had Firefox. It told me it wanted to update to newest I could use but instead erased my older version and said I can't run new one. How can I get old one back?

It downloaded and asked if I wanted to replace my current version, which I did. Then when I tried to open Firefox, it said I couldn't use this version. I guess my old version was overwritten. When I go to the Mozilla page, it doesn't say I can download anything that is compatible with my OS. Is there a way to get an older version?

  • Since I updated to Firefox 8 on Mac OSX 10.4.11, Firefox will not open anymore (not even previous versions downloaded via Safari). I get the error message 'You cannot use Firefox with this version of Mac OSX' (translated from Dutch).

I have tried creating a new profile, problem remains the same.
None of the 3 accounts on this desktop can use Firefox anymore. This has never been a problem. Today (14.11.11) I updated Firefox to 8, and nothing anymore. Via Safari I downloaded Firefox 7 to reinstall, same error message.

Beginning with Firefox 4, Macs must have an Intel x86 processor (which you do have) '''''and''''' OSX 10.5 or higher (your version is OSX 10.4).

The good news is that Firefox 3.6.24 still supports OSX 10.4 and Macs with the PPC Mac architecture. The bad news is that support for the Firefox 3.6.x series is likely to end in the first quarter of 2012.

  • Final cut studio 3 and my mac pro major and unnecessary issues

just a heads up, sorry for my grammar, I have been using final cut pro since it was 3.0 on my old g4 upgraded to every version since. ive edited on final cut pro ruffly 40 hours+ per week since. now i just upgraded to final cut studio 3 about 2 weeks ago and ive been having major issues with speed and freezing and rendering and the new sharing features and motion and everything.
    lets start from the beginning.
i have a mac pro 1,1 with dual core intel xeon 2.66 ghz
    7 gb of ram
osx 10.5.8 (cant upgrade to snow leopard just yet due to sxs problems and heard its even slower)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (thinking may be the culprit)
i have 2 monitors one 22" and my main 24" running both through a dvi cable
now the first hour i started working the computer froze up completely, mouse frozen and everything
(never happened before) after a day of unexpected quits and constant restarts i disconnected my second monitor.
im still having the speed problems sometimes even seeing scrambled images for icons on my os dock. i dont know what to do. ill leave something to render over night, wake up and check on it and the program quit. again. i have a deadline on a video coming very quick, and ive been searching this issue on all the discussion boards here and creative cow and haven't seen an answer yet. spoke to customer support early in the issue and tried everything they said ie: new user, different drive, yada yada yada. the only thing i havent done is reinstall osx and flush my whole computer. im definatly not prepared to do so and then still have the problem. anyway. if anyone can get through this runon of a post please please help im despreate. let me know if you need anymore info and ill be glad to provide it, and if anyone that helps lives in the ny area i would be honored to buy you a drink in return for your support.
    thanks for your time.

HOW did you upgrade? Install FCS 3 on top of FCS 2? That is not the best way to do it. Plus some of the issues you are having seem like OS issues. The best thing to do is the "scorched Earth" approach. Fresh install of the OS and fresh install of FCS 3. Always when upgrading this is the best method. And the make sure that you can go back if things don't work is to get a NEW hard drive, install the OS and FCS3 on that, and keep the old drive. Or clone your hard drive (carbon copy cloner), then erase and install. Or at least clone your drive before you update what you have (which is not the best way).
Too late now, I know, but file that away for the future. Now you should backup all your data, then erase and install Leopard again, then install your Apps. This will take a day, maybe a day and a half, and then you will be up and running. Better than trying to stuggle for days or weeks with a staggering OS.
