I am confused by how the photos are stored in the iphoto folders

I peeked into the iPhoto library to see how the photos are organized in the file system. I found that most of my photos are placed in date folders. But some folders are named after the events. In some cases, the folder names match some of the older events that I used, but since then, I have merged some events into one. e.g. iPhoto created one event for each day of my week long vacation. But after I came home, I merged all daily events into one big vacation event. So some of the daily event names no longer apply. However, I found that my photos are still in those folders. How can I tell iPhoto to organize these photos into date folder like the other photos?
I am trying to draw an analogy with iTunes. In iTunes, if I check the option to keep all the songs organized, all the songs will be relocated into a nice folder structure. I'd like to do something similar in iPhoto.

You can't. This changed with iPhoto 09 and no one knows why.

Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
The analogy with iTunes will always be limited for the simple reason that iTunes has no editing, no version control and no thumbnails. In fact the two libraries have pretty much nothing in common.

  • My photos are in pieces in iphoto folders. Will I see them again?

I am trying to recover rolls 107-113 taken in March 2007. There is alot I don't know about iphoto and at the time, I was trying to arrange them. Frustrated with opening a photo and finding it open again into many "pieces", i.e. an icon with 795 next to it, and another with 795.attr next to it, I began deleting, etc. I have all those deletes in folders, but I cannot get them with other "pieces" of those photos (that probably have not been deleted), to make a whole picture. When I can restore those pix I think the "rolls" of film will fall in line. I also lost about 5 short movies (10-30 secs. each) and cannot find a trace of them.
Thinking I had put those "pieces" in the trash, I spent the weekend with Data Rescue and found no traces in deleted items.
Does anyone know how to put the pieces together to make a photo whole again?
    Thanks.

    Hi Terence-
I think I am sol. I found none of my pix or rolls in the finder, but was glad to check that.
    Many questions follow:
    1) Can you explain what support docs. make up a jpg? Since I have two support docs per pix for some of the missing ones, why can't I find the other missing support docs., throw them in a blender and come out with my pictures again?
    2) If I "trashed" some iphoto support docs, what would I look for in Data Recovery? What label? With all the messing around I did w/iphoto library last March, there is a chance it crashed/errored and obliterated (some of) those docs.
    3) I am grasping for anything to recover them. These are pix of our barn fire from 3/10/07. My hopes of taking the tragedy on the road to prevent other barns from the fate of fire, may have to proceed without them. I inadvertently took about 4, 15-20 sec. movies also. I didn't know my camera took movies. They downloaded into iphoto and had the tiny movie camera icon with them. I have tried to 'finder' them as well, no luck. Any ideas?
    4) I have tried to open the support docs still in iphoto. The reply: "this is not a movie", "file could not be imported (The file is in an unrecognized format)." I don't get this. It was all done on this computer....well, that reminds me of this...
    5) I got this imac on July 10, 2007. Many of the iphoto 'modified dates' are 7/10/07. I had my old computer info transferred professionally. Does this mean anything?
Thank you for your time and persistence.
    Regards-
    Jane

  • How to explain.  OK 1st all photos are visible in my iPhoto library; however, some are stored on hard drive and some are stored on external.  All can be viewed in itunes, but none on the external will sync to my iPad.  What's up with that.

How to explain.  OK 1st all photos are visible in my iPhoto library; however, some are stored on hard drive and some are stored on external.  All can be marked or unmarked in itunes, but none of the photos stored on the external drive will sync to my iPad.  Anybody know what's up with that?

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • My latest import photos are missing from my iphoto library but still on my ipad, how do I get them back into iphotos. I very frustrated because i just imported them from my camera and have not been able to go thru and edit the ones I want. Help please

I recently imported pictures from my camera to iphoto. I also synced my ipad. In less than 24 hours my photos are now missing from iphoto even after trying to sync my ipad again. These pictures are from a very special occasion and I did not even get time to edit. Someone help please

    -Background-
My issue, which I resolved and may help you was the following:
I have an IPAD 3. I took over 5 GB of pictures on a third party camera. The car was full so I imported those pictures to my IPAD 3 and deleted them from the SD card. While on IOS 5.x, the photos on the IPAD were there under last imported.
Over the last few days, I upgraded to IOS 6. No issues.
Then, my family wanted to see the pictures from the trip. I went to the IPAD and could not find the photos. It listed 40 photos only. The last imported was there, but listed as empty. When I went into the settings>usage, it listed 5GB + of photos in the photos area. I was confused. I plugged my IPAD into ITUNES, first thinking I would get a backup asap (icloud was full after importing the photos). Then I though I would downgrade to IOS 5.
Also, itunes listed that I had 40 photos only, but 5GB of OTHER data. I was convinced the data was not lost. When I tried to browse the IPAD 3 using windows browser, the photos where NOT in the DCIM folder, so I was not able to simply "FIND" the photos and copy them to my PC.
    -SOLUTION-
I downloaded third party software onto my PC called "http://www.i-funbox.com/" I fun box. I had no idea if this would work, but other forums with other issues called out similar products for iphone issues.
When I installed the program, which was free, and so far free of malware, I started  to explore my IPAD file system.I found my photos, under IPAD>RAW file system>DCIM>100IMPRT.
    -ROOT CAUSE-
I suspect when I upgraded to IOS 6, apple fails to register the IMPORT folder of photos as such, photos. So the file system in IOS looses sight of what is inside the last imported folder. Essentially removing them from applications such as "Photos". Why windows does not seem them, is beyond me. But the program I found did see them in raw format, and I was able to COPY them to my PC. Then I deleted them from the IPAD, because I had no other way of managing this folder in IPAD, and it was using a lot of space.

    Good day AMELIASARAH,
One resolution to your issue would be to update your iPhone using iTunes on your computer rather than over the air. This requires much less space on the iPhone as most of the work is done by the computer. See this article for how to do it -

  • How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to upgrade to Aperture?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

How can I see what photos are stored on iCloud? I haven't used Photo Stream before so there are no photos on there that I can see.
    Help needed ASAP.
    Thanks

If you haven't used Photostream there won't be any photos "actually on iCloud".
Any photos stored as part of an iOS device backup can be viewed on the iOS device after restoring the backup to the iOS device. They can't be viewed online.

  • How many photos are in Organizer Catalog

How many photos are in my Organizer Catalog?

Sorry if you already know this but I feel it is worth repeating. There are no photos "in" the organizer - the photos are where you put them or have told the organizer/editor to put them.
The organizer database only contains links to your photos which is why you should NOT rename, delete or move a photo by external applications like Windows Explorer of Finder. The organizer does hold a small preview image of very low quality which it uses in the grid view.
If you want to know how many photos have been cataloged, then try going into the thumbnail grid view and ensure that all images are being viewed - i.e. no Back button or Show All button at the top of the grid. There is usually a status line at the bottom of the window which contains a count of images.
If you tell us which operating system you are running on and which version of Photoshop Elements you have, we may be able to help you more.

    Dear Sir/Madam
I want to tell you that I am very disappointed because I just read that in photo stream my photos are stored only for (30) thirty days.I didn't know that and I didn't have the time to save them on a device.
I was robbed of mobile before (3) three days and I lost 2.000 photos!
Is there any possibility to retrieve them?
If it was possible that would be great as I would save them immediately to my computer instead of losing them again.
    Thank you for understanding

  • I have lightroom.  My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk.  With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud?  Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?

I am an amateur photographer and have lightroom.  My photos are stored on an external disk drive with a backup disk.  With iCloud, will all of my photos go to the cloud?  Will I still need the external drives? Is the $9.99 per month for just one year or for always?

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

Thank you for your reply.  I have been backing up my entire computer and when I follow anything having to do with Lightroom I am not finding actual photos.  I hope to find the photos that have been backed up along with updates to them that my wife has been performing during her edits.  Found Lightroom 2 catalog Previews/Lrdata.  Could that be it?

  • My photos are stored on ext. hard drive, and now I can't see them

I recently moved all of my photos over to an external hard drive, and have been quite happy with the freed up space on my ibook. I have been able to view them flawlessly until a few nights ago. Our power went out, and then came back on (yes, I know I should have a battery back up), so of course the ext. harddrive turned off with unmounting, and since then, I cannot view my photos in iphoto. There is still the correct picture count registering, however in place of all of my photo thumbnails in IPhoto, now I am only seeing grey boxes in the same shapes as the thumbnails. I have tried everything, including unmounting the ext. hard drive. I am at my wits end and have been working too much to go into the genius bar.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jerrod

    Hi Jerrod,
A couple of things for you to try:
-Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and choose to open another library. Navigate to the one on the external and choose it.
    -Delete your iPhoto Preference file
    Preference file
    -rebuild your library
    Try this:
Before doing a rebuild make sure iPhoto's trash bin is emptied. You can do this by control clicking on the trash bin, or from the menu bar under iPhoto.
    Close iPhoto
    Duplicate the iPhoto Library folder
Drag the duplicate to the desktop (hopefully you have enough room on your hard drive for the duplicate.)
Launch iPhoto holding down the Command and Option keys until you see the rebuild options screen.
Choose the first three options. If you were missing photos in your library, also choose the last option. Be advised that you will get a roll of orphaned photos and it might be quite huge. Most of them will already be in your iPhoto library, but use caution when deleting anything from this roll until you are sure the photos are still in your library in another place. It might be a good idea to share/export this roll of photos just in case you need to import them again.
Back to the rebuild, depending on the size of your library it might take some time. When it is done, hopefully your photos will be there.
You might see some unexpected results as I did when I did a rebuild. Photos had been moved to wrong dates, video clips had lost their duration info and some were even orphaned from the jpg pointer file. It took me some time to straighten it out again.
This is the reason to make a duplicate before you rebuild, in case you do not like the result. If you don't like the result, close iPhoto, then delete the rebuilt library and drag the duplicate back into the Pictures folder making sure the name is iPhoto Library. Launch iPhoto and it should open the library in the Pictures folder.
iPhoto 4 or later: Rebuilding the iPhoto Library
-Navigate through the iPhoto Library folder and make sure your images are still there and open when double clicked.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
Please get back with the steps you tried and the results.
If none of these suggestions work, you can create a new library and import from the old.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • How to find that how many mailboxes are stored in each database

    Hi every one.
    Good evening
My question is, i have two databases in exchange 2010 server and i have around 150 mailboxes in both databases.
mdb01 & mdb02. I need to now how many mailboxes are stored in each database like
pls see example.. this is just a example..i dont no how many are stored in each datbase :-(
    mdb01----20 mailbox
    mdb02----130 mailboxes
and also i would like to know about the below details also
available mailboxsize in each database----DBsize---DB white space--
    Thanks for your kind help
    Karan

To see how many mailboxes you have in each database, run:
    Get-Mailbox -Server <ServerName> | group database | ft Name,count -AutoSize
...and to get a hunch of how much free space you have available, run
    Get-MailboxDatabase -Server <ServerName> -Status| ft Name,databasesize,available* -AutoSize
...but to get the exact amount of free space, you need to dismount the database and run
    eseutil /ms

  • Photos are stored on external disk

Hi there! A number of my photos are stored on an external disk; is there a way to transfer/incorporate these photos into my library to avoid carrying the external drive around whenever using iPhoto? Thanks

Do you have a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) or a (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended.
If you have a default managed library then simply import the photos into iphoto and they are thee - the source is not needed
If you have a referenced Library then you can use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to rebuild it as a managed library (projects, slideshows and other items that are not sharable will not be in the new library)

There are only a few images that I want to delete, not entire albums. I want to avoid syncing the iPad with the new computer, but it's looking like that may be my only option...to delete all of the iTunes synced photos then start from scratch since I still have the original images on my backup drive. Maybe send them to myself in email/through dropbox and save that way so in the future I can delete at will.
I just want to avoid all of that, save myself some time, so I figured I'd do as much asking as possible first.
