I am considering eating my computer

ok, i've been trying to put cds onto my itunes all flipping day, but for some reason, the Gracenote CDDB will not identify any of the cds i put in there. yes, they are all commercial cds, many of them are cds i have loaded on other computers in the past so i know that they should work. i checked my firewall but don't know what to look for, i'm not having any problems burning cds (that i know of) but i cannot cannot cannot for the life of me get itunes to recognize my commercial cds anymore, i will sell my soul if i have to to fix this problem...i tried going to preferences>advanced> and having it automatically read the cds but that setting was already on. did i mention that this is making me insane? oh yeah, and i tried to manually highlight the songs and get the gracenote cddb to read the cd but it said the network connection timed out. now this is fine and dandy, but i have perfect access to the internet, and so does everyone else in the house i live in (we are all on a network) so what the pickles is going on!?!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?!?!??!??!?!?!?!?!??!??!?!?!??!?!

I wish I had an answer but I have only the same problem you have. I cannot import any of my music files-folders??? to itunes. Gracenotes tries??? but just disappears. I am ready to take the ipod back to the store. I need answers such as: How do you "drag" files or whatever to itunes? I'm not even sure I know what the difference is between a file and a folder in itunes. How do "playlists" figure in? How do you find out if it is a firewall problem? I am so lost I can't even find myself but I think I can find the store for the return. Please... I hope somebody can help!

    Hello TchrDi,
    I suggest this article named Archived - iDVD: Troubleshooting issues with burning discs found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1583.
    It is pretty lengthy, but also pretty thorough.

  • Why is the Mac Pro considered a business computer

    I am finally ready to replace my old G5. However, when I look at the Mac Pros, they seem to be considered a business box. Why?
    thanks,
    Danuke

    The whole point of a MacPro is:
    - processor's raw power (more cores) for software that actually uses it;
    - GPU power;
    - ability to upgrade and expand easily HD/SSD - GPU - RAM and/or other internal hardware;
    - reliability under heavy load.
    I'm the Chief engineer for a TV station in Oregon - These Mac Pro's get used and used and used. They are not very "green" - the power consumption on them are pretty bad, but they can handle just about anything you can thow at them ... especially when it comes to needing to use your GPU like crazy!! The case is built like a brick and the cooling is awesome.
    They are a expensive computer, but they fill a notch that is hard to fill with just any old computer on the market today.
    My 2 cents worth,
    Bill

  • This is bizarre. Something appears to be eating my computer.

    Yesterday I went to my computer and found some kind of dust all around the base of the machine. It looks like dandruff. I wiped it down only to find that today it is back. See the photo below:
    If you look closely you can see that there is lots of the detritus on the stand itself, though the bit that has landed on top of the brown cabinet surface is the easiest to see.  The "dandruff" seems to be heaviest just below the vent holes on the back of the computer.  Are there batteries there that could be leaking acid? The machine is almost never turned off -- is  that part of the issue somehow? Are there some kind of blue meanies that will eat the equipment from the inside???? There has been no work going on with the adjacent walls or ceiling, so it's not construction related.  It's just this one area that seems to have this.  This is too weird.  Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    steve

    No, nor have I ever seen anything that suggested it need be cleaned.  While I can (and did) vacuum the vent holes to the point that it appears they are clean, there is no way that I can see to clear out the insides or to know if anything other than the vent holes themselves are clean.  In any event, thanks.

  • ITunes eats my computer

    Whenever I access the iTunes store, the homepage loads without a problem. If I try to browse for music, I do not have any problems either. Once I click a link from the browse menu or the homepage, iTunes immediately starts using 100% of my processor (which is a 1.4 gHz Pentium). The page that I tried to click on will not load. It sits there and says "Accessing iTunes Music Store", but never loads the page. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

    Which view are you using to view your music in iTunes For Windows?
    If using the Cover Flow view, it uses more memory than other views.

    i want to update my phone, but i purchased many apps and music on the phone. it won't let me authorize my computer so i cannot update. i don't want to deauthorize all my computers. how can i find out which 5 computers i have authorized? also how can i update the software?

    This is a tedious solution, which is stupid!  And some users report an inability to reauthorize a computer after an "en masse” deauthorization.  I can’t believe Apple doesn’t provide a list or menu to find out which computers you’ve authorized! Obviously, APPLE knows (or else they couldn’t tell us how many computers we have authorized)--so why can’t they give us access to that information about our own computers??!!!
    And for an already-authorized computer with a hard drive that’s since been replaced and upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, would it be recognized as a “new computer” and require authorization? Would its previous incarnation (i.e., with the old hard drive and OS) be considered a separate computer? Some users report they can’t authorize a computer after an OS upgrade because of that. Can’t believe we have to do such a bass-ackwards kludge!

  • Custom Install for Production Computer

    Hello, I have a few rather simple questions that I am hoping someone can help me with...
    1. I am adding a new MacPro to the mix for production work (photoshop, Indesign, Lightroom etc..) and I would like to drastically dumb down the machine to just run a few graphic/image programs. I don't want it to have anything else installed (garageband, mail, ICal etc....)
    I will have it connected to the internet so I am able to update the software but I don't want it to have any browsers installed for internet access.
    It has been a few years since I installed my OS and I can't remember exactly what the options are....So what I am wondering is what is the best way to do this? Can I choose not to install them when the system arrives "preinstalled" or should I just uninstall everything that I do not want?
    I know this seems like a simple question but I do not consider myself a computer wizard.
    2. On my current machine I have a lot of customization such as keyboard shortcuts, photoshop actions, program settings etc.... is there a way to transfer that information easily over to the new machine, since it will be configured very similar
    3. I plan on getting the machine with the 640Gb drive but I have considered putting my 250gb SATA2 drive in slot one to keep the OS and software separate and then moving the new 640Gb to slot 2 just for file storage. My reasoning for this is I am currently not using that 250Gb drive and it would give me a little more space...and probably keep my system a little cleaner. is there any advantage/disadvantage to this?
    4. I don't know a whole lot about disk images but could I essentially create an image of the 250Gb main OS drive and then if I ran into any sort of hard drive failure I could replace the drive, restore it and that way I wouldn't loose all of my custom settings? The 640Gb would be copied daily to an external drive (I have a RAID setup in my current machine with 2 1Tb drives but I do not want to RAID this machine).
    Basically I want to try and have this system set up in the most optimal way to protect my data, keep everything clean and run my programs smoothly.... so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated...
    Hope that makes sense... Thanks!

    Thanks so much for the responses they are very helpful.

    I do already have Chronosynch and it appears that is very similar to Super Duper?
    From what I gather is Time machine requires a drive approx 3x larger?
    Thanks I will look into Diskwarrior... I have never heard of it.
    The Hatter
    1. I do have other computers with internet access, this one I am just trying to isolate because in all honesty the internet can be a huge time waster for the bored or undisciplined...
    Am I missing something I may require a browser for other than surfing the internet? I can do all software updates within the program.. But I would sure hate to remove it and then need it... although I can always reinstall.
    2. thanks
    3. Thanks.. makes sense
    "I'd pull the 250GB as backup external off line, and fill the machine with 3 new drives for media, libraries, projects, scratch, editing."
    Could you please explain more about the above?
    No, I am not using Lacie drives. My RAID drives are Seagate Barracudas and it is configured in Disk Utility... and I am obsessed with backups.. I run a Chronosynch backup every few days of my whole 1tb drive... it is kept off site and I also have dvds of source files kept off site as well... I have even been known to carry a set of dvd's in my car or memory cards in my pocket so I have a duplicate off site copy just to run to the store in case the house burns down... lol. But I appreciate the concern.

    The computer I use for Itunes (my laptop) only has XP so I can't use ICloud:(
    I have a desktop that operates using with Vista.
    I downloaded 10.5 and sought to sync my two iphones and two ipads with the desktop in order to use ICloud. However I got warning messages that if I synced with this computer that had none of my extensive library of apps, music, podcasts, etc. would be on it, I would lose it all.
    I did authorize the computer. I knew enough to do that but am terrified that I will lose everything that I have accumulated and still won't be able to use ICloud.
    Isn't there a way to do this? Shift my library FROM my devices to the desktop?

  • Dropped the computer, charger doesn't fit right. Help?

    I recently dropped my MacBook :'( and I didn't think it would have any lasting effects. HOWEVER, now the charger doesn't fit into the socket. I examined it and I THINK that the socket has been distorted by the fall. Help?
    p.s. I'm actually a middle school student, so if you answer this question, PLEASE write in regular English

    What model of Mac do you have? (Open 'System Profiler' and look at line 2. My computer says 'MacBook4.1')
    Once you know your model you can locate the appropriate repair guide on ifixit.com. It sounds like your "magsafe board" may have gotten damaged or knocked loose.
    You may want to consider taking the computer to a professional repair shop. You don't want to accidentally turn a minor repair job into a major repair job (and get your parents mad in the process).

  • Fortran library for computation? or should I learn C instead?

    I think Fortran is a good choice for computation. It works as its name suggests: just translating the formulas and no need to consider how your computer actually works.
    The problem is: I can not find free libraries like GSL to do random number generating, minimization, etc. Some professors in our department are using sort of routines from Numberical Recipe, but many people say its performance is not good and it even has some errors. The MKL library from Intel looks complicated and it also lacks some minimization rountines I am looking for.
    In C, GSL seems a very popular library for computation. I checked its manual and it contains all the things I need, but unfortunately there is no good interface for Fortran to use it.
    So one solution is to switch to C. In fact C is my first language(almost 10 years ago), and every time I see some C code it just reminds me some good memories. I also appreciate the protability of C. So I would like to pick up C again if I have enough time to play around. However, pointers seem a lot of distraction and for now I just want to get things done quickly..
    What's your opinion on this? Any idea will be appreciated and I particularly want to hear people from some computation backgrounds. (PS, I am in econ)

    Second for Numpy.  The concern with looping seems unwarranted.  If anything, you will need much less looping.  Case in point, the 1D Haar transform.  The first inner for loop has been replaced with a pair of list slices, [0::2] and [1::2].  (Those give the even and odd elements, respectively.)
    side note:  All the heavy lifting is done with Blas and Lapack, both very fast C math libs.  It should not be that much slower than straight C.  I really need to do some benchmarking.
    Numpy:
    def haar1D(vec):
    "[(-0.5 to 0.5)] -> [(-0.5 to 0.5)]"
    w = len(vec)
    while w > 1:
    s = (vec[0:w:2] + vec[1:w:2]) / 2.0
    d = (vec[0:w:2] - vec[1:w:2]) / 2.0
    vec = n.concatenate((s, d, vec[w:]))
    w = w / 2
    return vec
    Compared to the original C code (from http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~mali/haar/):
    void haar1d(float *vec, int n)
    int i=0;
    int w=n;
    float *vecp = new float[n];
    for(i=0;i<n;i++)
    vecp[i] = 0;
    while(w>1)
    w/=2;
    for(i=0;i<w;i++)
    vecp[i] = (vec[2*i] + vec[2*i+1])/sqrt(2.0);
    vecp[i+w] = (vec[2*i] - vec[2*i+1])/sqrt(2.0);
    for(i=0;i<(w*2);i++)
    vec[i] = vecp[i];
    delete [] vecp;
    (I am reasonably certain the whole sqrt(2) thing was a bug.  Have not found it in any other literature.)

  • Help with Computer Purchase

    Im not even sure I am in the right community but here it goes I am looking at getting new computers for my wife and me we are looking at getting 2 MBA's and one 27" iMac. I have searched the internet high and low and cannot come up with a definitive line of answers. My questions are what size would be best for the MBA's we both love the 11' but I don't know if its worth the sacrifice of 3 hours battery life and the size/ footprint secondly is the flash storage 128/256/512 I will be getting 8gb ram on either. Taking into consideration the 27" we are looking at will be nearly maxed graphics card/i7/8gb ram I will be upgrading to 32gb after we get it dont want to pay apple prices but the drive is killing me I have no idea what to get I was really only considering ssd not sure what size 256/512/1tb but then there the fusion. We will also be getting a 2tb time capsule so i thought I would be able to get away with 512 but the 1tb keeps coming up in my mind any advice on these questions would be very helpful I have been racking my brain trying to decide. Also my usage will be a large shared iTunes library music,vids whatever else probably lots of pics and a bit of documents we are both in school lastly I was wondering about futureproofing and the expected life of the computers Thank You for all advice

    For the iMac 27" a fusion drive (3TB) may be suitable, and because these handle stored files differently than a two HDD computer, with automatic file movement, there is quite a bit to know about them. There are some Support articles on a variety of topics including the airport Time Capsule, and Time machine software; also migration assistant and other things. And user accounts, permissions, privileges, sharing, etc.
    Not sure about 'futureproofing' computers, unless you happen to need sturdy workhorse machines you can personally swap out parts, troubleshoot, and repair yourselves. The design is going away from that standard.
    Some people with a more mobile lifestyle may consider a Mini computer and an iPad that could act as a display and also a keyboard to the Mini; plus have a regular keyboard and display for the Mini Mac. But that's probably an acquired taste. The MacBook/Air models with 256GB SSD would be plenty fast, not sure about the actual battery life between the 11" and 13" models. The only MacBook model left with an optical drive built-in is the low-end MacBook/Pro 13", so if you don't mind a non-Retina display, a little more weight, it is an OK choice at less cost. I'd probably get that, because I archive digital images to DVD media and also to external HDD. The Apple USB external superdrive may be a necessity, but other brands are said to be OK.
    Learning how to use the Recovery and backup systems in these newer computers and whatever OS X version they have installed (Mavericks may be a free download, not included inside some) so there is a ton of stuff to consider. Each device that can see the airport Time capsule may want to use it as a backup, so that would not suffice for three Macs to have one, but you could backup and even clone complete system copies to other fast USB3.0 or FireWire800 externally enclosed self-powered hard disk drives, as these could boot and run their original host computer. A timemachine backup can't.
    I fear that I could write a few hours and really say nothing; however I have read about most problems and issues, support related and service, at least online; and see there are some items I would avoid. In fact my hardware is not new and the OS X is a bit dated. I have other interests nowadays and no longer do the 'cutting edge' or retail thing. But then, I'm not sold on a smart phone yet either. I prefer to be by myself to think, and research more directly.
    However, as I age my photographic memory has faded some...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Connecting computer directly to Airport

    Hello,
    I am considering buying a computer, but it doesn't have an Airport card. Since this computer would need an original card, and I can get a graphite/snow base station for less than the card, would it be possible to connect my computer directly to the Airport base station, and then the base would relay to the Airport base connected to the internet? Here is a picture showing the situation (sorry for the quick drawings... just replace the Express with a Snow/Graphite):

    Yes, your proposed network configuration should work. You will need to set up the AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), with the one your connecting your computer to, via Ethernet, as the remote base station in that WDS.

  • Suggestions for new computer

    I'm asking about a new computer for my mother-in-law. Shes in her 80ties and has been on the internet for approx. 10 years. She surfs the net a little. She uses it for email and windows games mostly. She wants to buy a new computer and asked me to take her to best buy to purchase a new one. Any suggestions and what should I ask the sales person and what would you recomment? Of course it should be probably in the $400.00 range. Thanks

    What kind of games does she play? 0_o
    I would try to focus on getting one with something such as an i3, A6, A8, A10 processor if you can if you can get a FX4300 for that price even better.
    Unfortunately at this time there aren't many computers that meets those cpu levels however this one would be sufficient for her needs and within your budget.

    Couple of tips:
    -Stay away from Asus/Dell they have a lot of freeware/bloatware unless you don't mind having to remove all the free stuff on there for the next two hours.
    -One thing to always consider is the computer warranty, Asus/Dell both have very...delicate warranties. If you even touch the back of that computer seal you might as well say bye bye to the warranty.
    -I like HP products they are reliable and are a well respected brand.
    -Just because the unit is smaller doesn't mean it's better keep that in mind though also this particular slimline just happened to fit the price.
    -I think one thing you need to consider though before you even consider this HP is do you feel your relative would be able to use and get adjusted to Windows 8.1? 8.1 is great and I use it daily at work and at home but I admit it just isn't for everybody. I spent literally 30+ hours with one client on just trying to get the basics down to her once and it wasn't a good experience and it does make you start thinking.
    -Remember the return policy if you don't like it, if she can't use it just return it within your mybestbuy tier date (15, 30, 45)
    I am not affiliated with Best Buy nor have I ever been employed by Best Buy. All of my thoughts and posts are of my own opinion and personal experience.
    I may not always know the right answer, but I will always tell you what I do know. I also do free computer analysis and consultation via private message.

  • I just got a used computer with iTunes already on it.

    I had an iTunes library that stayed on the computer my ex kept after the break up.  I got a used laptop that has iTunes already on it.  I want to sync new music, but it tells me my iPod can only sync with one library at a time.  Since I have no idea who had this computer, or what the password for their apple account might be, I'm hesitant to sync.  I want to be able to purchase aps and music with MY apple account, but I'd still like to get the music from the CDs I uploaded to this iTunes library.  Does anyone have any tips?  Thanks much!!!
    ~Nikki~

    Am I correct that what you're saying is you want to download items from the iPod to the laptop you purchased?
    Apple only provides for this to be done for items purchased from iTunes Store.  This is to prevent people from transferring music they do not own that would in normal conditions be present on their computer already.
    As already suggested, you should really consider wiping the computer and starting fresh.  Re-rip your CDs you have and build you iTunes library that way.  There are third party utilities (commerical software) that let you transfer items from an iPod to a computer, but you'd be better off starting fresh.
