I am deciding whether to get the macbook pro retina (base model) or the fully customized macbook air. Opinions on which one I should get?

I am trading in my 2009 macbook pro so now I am trying to pick the one I want. I stream a lot of movies and tv shows off of netflix but otherwise I'm just an average computer user.

Cores and speed ...
Multiply cores by the speed to get "maximum therotical processing power".  Example:
2.8 dual = 5.6 max
2.2 quad = 8.8 max
Plus quad-core usually have hyper-threading which can double that maximum speed.  And quad-core systems have slightly faster internal caches and other memory buses.
In theory.  Usually even the heaviest programs will not max out, but it will have a higher maximum.
If you can afford the quad-core, it gives a bit longer usable life.

  • Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?

Is it possible to virtually bypass the battery on a macbook pro (retina 2014) and power the mac directly via AC power?
E.g. Dell allows you to plug the laptop into AC power but prevent battery charging.
Note: I do not want to physically remove the battery.
If there isn't an option on Mac OS, is there anything I can download to bypass the battery when I want?

Thanks for linking me! Wow I had no idea the clock speed would be cut so severely! What a bunch of rubbish, as if the AC won't provide enough power!
I guess the only solution to my question would be an app which virtually disconnects the battery but tricks the mac into thinking the battery is still connected. I'm just surprised Apple haven't yet started to build prisons for the government - considering how well they lock up their software and hardware!

  • I recently attempted to re-install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro late 2012 model and the internet recovery is failing.

I recently attempted to re-install Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro late 2012 model and the internet recovery is failing. I have absolutely no clue what to do here. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    - Currently if I boot it up there is a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I am assuming this means there is no OS because I wiped the SSD and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion
    - When I hold Command+R, it prompts me to Choose Network... the problem with this is the wifi constantly is disconnecting. The Retina 2012 does not have an ethernet port so i have considered buying the attachment then returning when done.
Once again Thank you in advance.
    Best.

There is nothing to do if you don't have a reliable Internet connection unless you have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer application from when you first installed it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

My brand new MacBook Pro retina display not charging the battery any more after 3 weeks...no green or red Led. Any one now about this problem? Thanks

Either the power brick is damaged, or the charging circuit is on the blink, or both. Either way, a trip to the Apple Store or the Apple Authorized Service Provider is in order, as this ain't no bargain basement toy.
In the meantime, can attempt an SMC Reset to see if it helps.

If you are seeing a Red LED, you may have a faulty MagSafe Adapter.
I remember reading that the orange light is produced by a combination of a Red and Green LED. If that's the case, It seems that the adapter isn't lighting the green LED properly at that time.
I would suggest you seek service with your nearest Genius Bar (Apple Retail Store) or Apple Authorised Service Provider as they have access to diagnostics which may assist in isolating any hardware issues you may be experiencing.

  • What aspect ratio is the 15'' macbook pro retina 2013 model?

Hello. Can someone please tell me what the aspect ratio of the 2013 Macbook Pro retina 15inch is? Is it 16:10 or 16:9

Glad to have helped in some way. I'm a college student that is on this website because I am a huge apple fan, have good knowledge of apple products, and enjoy helping others.
I'm sorry you had an encounter with a rude person. I promise you most people on here are not like that. These are support forums for getting help with your apple products. This is the right place for you to ask questions and get help concercing them. You will find that most on people are helpful and kind.
Your question was in no way stupid and deserved a nice response. I have a grandpa who is 90 years old and he tends to ask questions that can be considered stupid such as "how do i close this window" or "how do i find the internet browser" but none of us ever ridicule him on it we are all just happy he can use the computer at his age.

  • Is the Macbook Pro Retina display better than the LED display on the new iMac that is coming out?

I am thinking of either buying the Macbook Pro retina display (15") or waiting for the iMac 27" display. I am mainly focusing on the display, so what is better?

Is the MacBook Pro Retina display resolution of 2880-by-1800 a strain on the eyes as I understand the higher the resolution the more strainful the screen can be to the eyes?
Well there are two or three causes of eyestrain with displays different people seem to have.
    1: Small type/UI elements
    2: Glossy screens
    3: Flicker rate
    1:
The higher pixel rate combined with the display set at the higher resolution is going to cause UI and type to be smaller and harder to see. In fact it's advised to set OS X to a lower resolouton so it upscales better to match the pixel of the higher display.
Reports coming in say watching HD 1920 x 1080 trailers on the anti-glare 17" is best as the pixel content matches the display almost fullscreen, where on the MBP-R it's upscaled and thus looks blurry.
HD content makers are NOT going to change all their video cameras to support 2880 x 1800 full screen, so in order to get a clearer image playing HD 1080 content, one will have to do so in a smaller window.
    2:
The new MBP-R dispalys are 75% less glossy, but not 100% less glossy like the anti-glare models so this can still cause some people problems. This can be lowered to under 1%, however I'm suspecting to do so would be considered giving up a military advantage to China where Apple gets it products made.
    3:
I don't know about the flicker rate if it's better or not on the MBP-R's than the previous screens.

  • Looking to get a mac for fall semester, have a few questions on which one I should get.

Hello everyone, this is the first time im posting here and i hope i can get some help. Im in the need of a new computer; I have been wanting a mac for a long time and i figured since im a junior in college that i should get myself something decent to finish school with. Any who i have been thinking about getting a refurbished mac for a while now, to me saving a few bucks is always a plus. I was just wondering though, do you guys think i should get one of those older products or maybe get one of the newer models just announced at wwdc? I had my eye out on a macbook pro, but the air has also been looking really nice. Im really having a tough time trying to decide which one i want get. This will be my main computer btw, and i currently do have an iphone and ipad 2 to go along with it. Here are the notebooks i was considering and also i usually will not be carrying it around campus that much.
    macbook pro 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD313LL/A
    macbook air 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC965LL/A
    macbook air 11in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC969LL/A
Hopefully you guys can help me out, im really looking forward to owning a mac. If it wasnt for the os, i wouldnt be considering one, but i just fell in love with it when one of my high school teachers was showing some of the things he could do with his mac. Also if anyone has any other suggestions, please tell me, im all up for new ideas.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you... gonna be using it as my primary computer, graduating college soon, and my first mac. I'll be going with the 13 inch MacBook Air.
The Pro and the Air are nearly identical performance-wise and so that means the only advantage of the Pro is the storage space (unless you count the cd drive as an advantage). The Air is way more portable and has a better display, I don't know about you but my current cd drive rarely gets used so might as well get rid of it.
I have also compared them side-by-side in the store and that was really what won me over to the Air. The 11-inch Air was there too but the screen just seems too small, especially if you are doing work/writing essays etc.
    Hope that helped

  • Macbook pro retina battery won't charge fully

    Hello,
Im not sure why but my 1 year old macbook pro retina 15inch won't fully charge. It gets to a charge between 75% and 88% and it will at that point stop charging.
I have attached an image below that shows how the battery has stopped charging. I have taken very good care of this laptop and am very surprised to see such an issue.
    Thanks,

    Have you tried resetting SMC?

  • Space bar does not start or pause playback in iTunes on new MacBook Pro Retina display model

    Does anyone have a solution?

No computer is fault free but Apple MBPs have a good track record.  In those cases where problems do arise, Apple has the best support in the industry.
A MBP with 4 GB RAM with the SSD storage should be adequate for your needs.

P.s. On Apple's site I found a refurbished late 2013 model of the MacBook Pro Retina 13 with all of the same specs as listed above (4GB, not 8GB), running OS X (doesn't say which one) but for a bit less than a brand new one. Is this the same model as what they're currently selling new in their store or did they just upgrade everything to match what is being offered in the current "new" model?
The latest MBP models came out in October 2013, so it will be the same, with the same warranty and telephone support.  The difference will be that the price will be less and it will be delivered in a plain white box.
I have purchased three MBPs from the refurbished section.  I have never been able to detect any cosmetic differences and will go that route again.
    Ciao.

  • Canopus ADVC110 to 15" macbook pro retina 2013 Model

    Hai All,
How can i connect Canopus ADVC110 to 15" macbook pro retina 2013 Model

    Same doubt here,
Theoretically you could use a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter from Apple.
The remaining question is: will it provide enougth energy to power the ADVC110 unit?

  • I bought a macbook pro a month ago and didnt know there was a better/newer model (macbook pro retina) - can I upgrade/take back my macbook and get the new one?

When they told me about it I just thought it had a better display and decided it didn't bother me if the resolution was better, not knowing that it was thinner, has a HDMI connection, etc.
I bought my macbook pro 13 inch exactly a month ago tomorrow. If I go back and tell them this will I be able to upgrade my laptop? I paid more than $1300 or something for this one, I'd be willing to pay up to the price of the retina model, do you think I'd be able to do this?

If your non retina MBP has a dvd slot and a large capacity conventional hard drive, you might find the retina model would have been less convenient with lower capacity SSD and no DVD.
On the other hand, the MacBook Pro with Retina display has got a much faster drive and you can get an external DVD drive (not everybody needs a DVD drive)
Absolutely, like I say personal Choice.  I believe from remarks in here that the SSD boots up on Mavericks in something like 10 seconds whereas mine takes even longer to boot than in Mountain Lion. But then we are advised to use sleep over boot as much as possible.  My problem is I have 300GB of stuff and getting bigger, and when I bought mine the biggest SSD was 250 I think. For me the choice of replaceable RAM vs soldered-in RAM was a clincher.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 15" Models - which is the latest?

My rMBP model number is MC975X/A. There is a model on Amazon advertised as being the 'newest' which has the serial of MC975LL/A.
I can't find a list of rMBP models - thought I might see if anyone in the community knew more about this. I will probably ask to see a new model in store and decide if I want bother swapping.
I just it and I'm happy with it, even though I have detected slight ghosting (which I might never have noticed unless prompted by forum threads) and the bottom plate is slightly sqeaky (why I got on the forum to take a look in the first place). I can live with those things although I'd prefer
When I bought it, I checked with the Apple store person if it was the latest. He said yes - probably not realising I was asking about the occasional silent upgrades models get. I wanted to know because the retina was a groundbreaking new product with a new interior design, and I thought that after six or so months this might ahve been improved.

The MC975 is the most recent model. The letters at the end indicate the country or region where the MBP is marketed.
