i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing.  For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work.  It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly.  I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before.  I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......

This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too.  I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously.  About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working.  However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances?  The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution.  Does anyone have any solutions?  Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues...

Assuming you registered your older version, you can retrieve the serial number by going to Adobe's site and go into your account. On this page, click the My products link in the right hand column of the first three. You'll be asked to enter your user account name and password. Once in, a list of all software you've purchased will be shown, along with their serial numbers.
That said, it really won't help you much. A PowerPC only version of InDesign means it's no newer than the original CS version, and won't be worth a cent towards an upgrade discount. To get CS6, you'd have to pay full price again.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Trying to delete files from my finder on my MacBook Pro

    Hi guys,
I had some video files that I downloaded and transferred them to my external hard drive which is connected via wireless network. I then deleted the files from my computers hard drive and then emptied my recycle bin/trash.
As you can see from the picture below, the files have changed in look as they now look like some kind of ghost file. I can not drag the files to the recycle bin or to any other folder. These files are taking up the full space of the original files e.g. if I downloaded a 3 GB file, then these so called "ghost" files will also be 3 GB. As you can see so far these files are taking up about 50 GB on my internal hard drive, which is a problem as if I continue to download movies or other files, and move them to my external hard drive then I can't delete the files from my MacBook.
I am getting frustrated and worried as I cannot get rid of these files. I have tried restarting my computer, and double clicking the file however when I double click the file the following message appears in a box "The alias “Big Blue [0000].tmp-635723058.m4v” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found." It then gives me a choice to delete alias, fix alias or okay. If I go to delete the alias then the following message appears "can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."
If I go to fix the alias then I am able to point the file to its original in my external hard drive. When I point the file to its original the following message appears "operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -43)."
Has anyone else ever had this problem? If so then how did you fix the problem? If not then do you have any other ideas or can you suggest how to fix the alias so I can delete the file again? If you need any other information than I can provide information and pictures on a reply message.

Open Disk Utility select First Aid select your hard drive then click Repair Disk Permissions.  This operation may take some time to complete!
    Do one of the following:
Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
Disk Utility repairs the permissions for files installed by the OS X Installer, Software Update, or an Apple software installer. It doesn’t repair permissions for your documents, your home folder, or third-party apps.

  • I have a MacBook Pro.  I am told that I can install AppleWorks on this Intel Machine. True or False? If true do I need to have Rosetta on the compuer?

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I have been told I can install AppleWorks 6.2.9 on this machine. Is this correct? I read somewhere I would also need Rosetta but do not know if this is correct. If so how can i get Rosetta? I can presently open my old Appl;eWorks documents with Pages but my wife insist I try to get her AppleWorks back?
I had a copy of AppleWorks 6.0 from the old days but it would not install on my MacBook. A message came up saying Apple no longer supports OS9. I can purchase a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 but if it want install then I would be wasting my money.
    Thanks,  john

To install Rosetta you insert your initial Snow Leopard installation disk and double click optional install then double click the optional install package which will lead you through installing Rosetta. It is on the  install disk but is not installed by default.
Once you get Appleworks 6 working, assuming it then does, you can download the 6.2.9 update

  • If I enter a new contact in Address Book on my MacBook Pro it copies onto my iPhone via iCloud but editing an existing contact does not copy to the iPhone

I have set up my new iPhone 4 to sync with my MacBook Pro using iCloud as default.  This works fine with Calendars on iCal in both directions.  However, I am struggling with Contacts because new entries on the iPhone appear on my Mac's Address Book fine but erratically the other way.  New entries on the Mac seem to appear OK on the iPhone but edits to existing accounts do not appear.  Also, many entries were missing when I imported the main list from Mac to iPhone but that was done by cable through iTunes before setting up iCloud.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • QT Pro 7 Export to web is not the same with Snow Leopard?

Before updating to Snow Leopard, I would use the "Export to Web" feature in Quicktime Pro 7.  The desktop option would give me a small file size with a resolution of 853x496.  Why does it now give me a much larger file size at 1280x720?  This is slowing down my workflow, please advise.

  • How can I create hard disk space without emptying the Trash?

I moved everything in my Pictures folder into Trash, not realising the folder also had the iPhoto library.
So now all my photos have gone from iPhoto, though they are still in the Trash folder, which has not been emptied.
I have attempted to restore in two ways:
    1)  Through Time Machine (which has most but not all of the iPhoto library backed up, and
    2)  By dragging the iPhoto library from Trash into Pictures.
In both cases the restore action fails because during the process I get the message that the start up disk is running out of space.
One way to create space would be to empty the Trash, but I can't do that because I would lose the photos not backed up on Time Machine.
I was not aware of any space problems previously, so I wonder if something I have done in this process has filled up my hard disk?  But in any case, the immediate problem remains - how to create space (which will hopefully allow me to restore the photo library), without clearing out the Trash folder.
Thanks for reading this, and any advice will be much appreciated.

The following comments are really off topic because unfortunately they come too late to help you in your particular case.  They may even amount to venting.
The way iPhoto hides your photos in packages that are not readily accessible in the Finder—because you have to Control-Click and open the package to show its contents first—is the main reason I immediately delete iPhoto from my hard drive whenever it gets installed by an OS installation or upgrade.  I hate the "Libraries" paradigm in Apple's Apperture and in Adobe's Lightroom.
I much prefer the Adobe Bridge paradigm which is totally transparent and instantly reflected in the Finder, just as any changes you make in the Finder is instantly reflected in Bridge.
After years of trying, I've given up trying to find somene's ear at Apple to let them know how unacceptable iPhoto is (on so many levels).
Similarly, I have disabled Time Machine on my Leopard boot drive, preferring to rely on SuperDuper, although my main working boot drive is a Tiger volume.  Because of their intrusiveness, I've also permanently disabled Spotblight and the Dashboard on all my OS installs.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion and my 2004 Microsoft Office no longer functions.  So all of my word docs are unreadable with the Lion system.  If I buy pages, will they be converted?  Also, I used Microsoft Word for editing docs, making comments and tracking

I need help.  All of my word docs from Microsoft word 2004 cannot be read in Lion.  I can't believe I'll have to pay for a Word upgrade.  Is it worth it?  Is pages as good?  Will all of my docs be recognized once I upgrade to the current word or Pages?  I tried Open Office, but that doesn't synch all of the previous Word docs, it needs to be done one doc at a time.

It would have been nice to know this before buying a $29 upgrade to Lion. Which now will add a necessary $150 upgrade. Some people may have waited to upgrade to Lion had they known this.
The fact that Lion is unable to run PowerPC only applications is publicized for months.

  • What is the best way to add hard disk space to macbook pro?

I'm running out of disk space on my macbook pro. What is the best way to add disk space?

another way of doing it is to replace your hard drive with a larger one.
if you're technically capable, it takes 10 minutes for the swap and an hour minimum to clone your hard drive or do a data transfer.  all depends on how much data there is to trandfer or to clone.
    good luck.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion and am using the current version.  I cannot remove the guest account from the startup screen.  I disabled it in the system pref but it still appears.

I downloaded and installed the most recent verison of Lion for my iMac.  After doing so I noticed that my start up screen now has a "guest" account.  I went into settings and disabled the "guest" account.  Still, the startup sceen displays a "guest" account and allows one to start the computer in a "safari" only mode.
How do I removed the "guest" account from the start up screen and disable access via the "guest" account?

Have a read here OS X 10.7.2 with iCloud showing Guest user account at log-in
To get rid of it, uncheck "Find my Mac" in System Peferences -> iCloud

  • Yahoo Finance - Interactive Charts problems with Snow Leopard - help?

    Hi,
I'm used to using Yahoo Finance and chart tracking of multiple stocks with their interactive chart. Now it seems stuck: thus, I can't add multipe indexes or other stocks to compare it too. (firefox and safari)
Less of an issue, the cursor when the "Compare to:" box pops up is under each stock/index you want to compare to; say appl to palm or rimm (no comparison of course though!!) (firefox and safari same problem)
any ideas? I feel like the top issue was only one when I installed snow leopard
    many thanks

I have the same problem. I thought upgrading to Snow Leopard might help, but no. I've now seen the problem on various Macs, with Firefox and Safari. Several months ago, or longer, it stopped working. Once in a while it works once or twice. I had used it extensively for several years. Some sort of change was made, at Yahoo and/or Apple, and now it's broken. I also have the issue with the cursor hidden underneath the box.
