This means that you are using a different computer to update it from the one you usually sync to. Alternatively, it may mean that you never sync to a computer.

Well, when you click on "update" and it goes partway through and then says it can't continue that does look somewhat error-like to me. :-). I did do a synch when I first plugged the iPad into my desktop, but had to upgrade iTunes and reboot before upgrading the iPad OS, so everything should be backed up. I hope! I don't know how to check on whether things like my appointments or files that I have created get saved in a synch. Selecting each of my pictures and emailing them to myself is an option, I guess.
I am new to the apple world and the thought of losing six month's worth of stuff is intimidating. If only I knew which things would get lost, I'd be able to work with it.

okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Based on your post it sounds like you would like to sync your iBooks content with your computer. I have located an article that may help you in this situation. While you can sync this data with your computer you can also use the sharing button to send PDFs using various sources:

Disable your antivirus and firewall software. Kaspersky is especially bad about interfering with updates.

but you can never lose the apps they are tied to the appleID and can always be redownloaded from both the iphone under purchases and in itunes on the computer

What exactly does the error say?
Updating to iphone 5 does indeed erase your iphone, then it restores the data (assuming you have made sure that everything on your iphone is on your computer first).

(1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):

(2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
(3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
(4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
