I am getting an error on my time machine backup of "error-1". It will not back up.  What can I do?

I am unable to back up my imac to my time machine location.  I get the error message "...sparsebundle  error-1".  Does anyone know how to fix this?

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for details.

  • Trying to upgrade to Maverick but my disk has Time Machine backup so it cant and will not intall. How do I get around this problem?

I have a 13-inch MacBook Mid-2009 running on IOS X Lion and am trying to upgrade to Mavericks but after the download and starting installation the point where you choose which disk to use it says my hard drive is being used for Time Machine backups so it can not be used. I have turned off the Time Machine but do not know how to remove the backups from the hard drive. What do I do to get rid of the Time Machine backups I no longer actually need and install Mavericks? I have moved all my files to a separate terabyte hard drive but that drive does not have the GUID partition scheme to be used for installation. So I am stuck with one internal hard drive I cant use due to Time Machine and an external hard drive I cant use due to this GUID partition problem. How can I work around this and finally upgrade to Mavericks?

  • I have an iPhone with iOS 7.1.1 and am trying to update to 7.1.2, but get an error message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone becaus the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone"

I have an iPhone with iOS 7.1.1 and am trying to update to 7.1.2, but get an error message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone"

Assuming you are using the current version of iTunes (11,2,2), open iTunes, click "Preferences" under the leftmost entry on iTunes' menu, then choose "Devices".
Find the iPhone's backup there, highlight it, and choose "Delete Backup".

Never mind. I kept trying, and finally when I opened "About This Mac" and clicked the software update from there (as opposed to the "Software Update" just below), the Java update finally worked.

    Hey there,
When i try to load the itunes introduction i only get: an error occured while processing this directive. What can i do!?

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I have a wireless transmitter already, would like to use the capsule just as a back up drive, I tried hooking up from the ethernet port on the imac to the one of the ports on the capsule but then my Wifi would not work. do I hook the cable to the port with the circle or the arrows?
It is better to have the TC as part of the main network in bridge. You do not need to run wireless.
If you want to use the TC plugged in by ethernet and still use wireless for internet, that is possible but the setup is rather more complicated.. the computer must not get confused about which device to use as a gateway or dns server.
See info in this thread on setting this up.

I need to add.. a USB drive would be cheaper, faster and more reliable. It is really poor use of a TC.

Since you don't really have a question, I will give you a very broad information source for the next time you have a Time Machine question.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Oh, you cannot use a computer whose only disk drive is the target of a an OS X cloning operation regardless of what software is used for the clone. You can, however, use the source drive except if you try to clone using Disk Utility.

  • Some assistance needed on getting data off of a Time Machine backup

To make this short, I had a major HD failure on an older external Lacie drive that I used as storage for all kinds of things. I had that drive backed up, along with everything else, onto another Lacie external drive. Coincidentally, after the storage drive failed, so did my newer Lacie drive used for backup, BUT it is assumed that this one if just a bad power supply. A new one should be here today so we'll see if it will spin up.
While waiting on the PS to arrive, I've decided to change backup strategy a bit and purchased a RAID array set up as RAID1. At least this way a drive failure won't screw me. I know, I still need to be careful since the drives are mirror's of each other so if the data is corrupted...anyway.
The RAID is up and running and Time Machine is working flawlessly (for now) on it. Once I get the PS for my other drive and providing it spins up, I need to pull data off of the old Time Machine backup in that drive, specifically for the storage drive. I know that on the TM drive there is a directory for that storage drive, but what I don't know is if I can just copy the latest dated directory for that drive and I'll get all the data or am I going to have to go through Time Machine to get at.
And that is the other problem. I don't think TM will give me access to that drives data since the drive is no longer connected to my system. I'm hoping I'm wrong on that and that there is a simple solution to get at the data.
So help if you can and keep your fingers crossed that the drive will spin up!
    Anthony

WOW. After letting DW do it's thing and failing to be able to write a new directory, it WAS able to create one and use it create a preview of the the drive. It said the drive was damaged and the new directory couldn't be written.
Well, the preview seems to have worked OK and I was able to copy the data from my old "storage" drive to a new folder on my new backup drive. That took an incredibly long time, but it looks like all 67GB of data is intact. I'm currently writing zeros to the old drive after repartitioning it. That should take care of the volume structure problem, but certainly doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy about the drive stability.
And all this leaves me with another question. What the heck caused the volume structure to get completely hosed at the same time the other drive failed totally? Since TM was backing up the "storage" drive to this one, could the failure have caused something to get majorly messed up on the TM drive?
Or, could the TM drive failure been caused by all these darn TM errors that keep popping up for no rhyme or reason? And oh yeah, the errors are popping up on the brand new 3 day old drive, too. TM seems to work when it wants to!
All this mess makes me feel really uneasy about using TM at all. Should I change to Retrospect or something? Should I continue to use it and ignore the errors that so many of us seem to be plagued with? Can TM totally FUBAR a drive with these errors?
I need a drink after this mess, so please feel free to chime in with your thoughts and suggestions.
Thanks all for giving me advise and encouragement.
    Anthony

  • After restoring from Time Machine to new Hard drive, system will not boot

I replaced my hard drive on my Macbook (2008 model) with a larger drive. I then put in my Snow Leopard disk, and followed the steps to restore from Time Machine backup. a few hours later it said it was restored, but when trying to boot up, I just get a blue screen with an occasional flicker to the Leopard screen. I tried an earlier back up as well but with the same results. Any suggestions??

Same exact problem here just yesterday, folks.
Got a bigger hard drive on my MacBook Pro (15-inch Core 2 Duo) and installed it. Followed the restore procedures from Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/333319/the-secret-of-the-time-machine+assisted-hard-drive-swa p). Then got the blue screen immediately after the chimes.
I only managed to transfer my old disk content by using CarbonCopyCloner.
Having said that, your solution looks uselful, Portland Mac! :
    Portland Mac wrote:
... But when I decided to try and just do a fresh install and work my way back through all my software, I started by installing Snow Leopard and suddenly it boots and everything from my Time Machine backup is there...
But I would not say the following:
    Portland Mac wrote:
... On a new drive apparently you have to install Snow Leopard before you do a time machine restore.
Am I mistaken, or did you do a fresh install after restoring your TimeMachine backup?
In any case, I found an interesting Apple article that might confirm that there is a problem: [Mac OS X v10.6: Issues after restoring a Mac from a Time Machine backup made with a different Mac ("Restore System From Backup…")|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3243]. Or is it a completely different thing?
And another discussion that might give some good advice: [http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12578529#12578529]. Personally, I will now do as the man says: two backups, on two different external hard drives, using different apps, the other one being CarbonCopyCloner...
For info, and I don't know whether that matters, my backup disk had been full and some past content had been erased automatically by Time Machine. But I don't think this should have mattered...

  • After using Time Machine-Computer Freezes on startup and will not sleep.

I've narrowed down my iMac issues to Time Machine.
After I back up with Time Machine, my iMac freezes on start up ( I have to turn it off and turn it back on again for normal start up) every time I turn it on and it will not sleep.
I reset the SMC, startup in safe mode, and do all of the troubleshooting to get it back so it starts up without freezing (sometimes my troubleshooting works). I've even reinstalled SL a couple of times and that seems to have helped but...
...when I back up with Time Machine, the freezing issues and non-sleeping issue return.
I've just installed the 10.6.2 update and my iMac is now working perfectly, no freezing on start up and it sleeps.
I'm afraid to use Time Machine for fear of the problems returning.
Any ideas on why Time Machine would corrupt my system? Any thoughts on how I can remedy the situation?

    Hello m:
The preference file (plist) tells OS X what default and/or user preferences to apply to a device or a program. They rarely become corrupt, but if they do they cause all sorts of odd behavior.
After you trash the preference file and restart, OS X will rebuild the missing file with default values. If you have some personal preferences, you would need to enter those.
    Barry
P.S. The preference file I mentioned is located in Macintosh HD>library>preferences

  • Restored system from Time Machine backup disk but the system could not start-up

On MacBook Pro early 2008, restored the entire system from Time Machine backup disk to the entire disk.
The previous system on the backup disk had FileVault turned on.
The restore completed successfully and I was prompted to restart the system via the new restored system disk.
I heard the normal start-up sound, then the Apple logo, but it stuck at the logo screen. And the cooling fan run at almost full speed?
I have been waiting for a few hours, guessing it might FileVault the disk.
Finally I have to shutdown the machine as it stuck at the logo screen forever.
Anyone has the same issue? Any ideas?

BTW, I also tried Repair the system disk, Fix permissions via Disk Utility.
I guess I must lose some files either during the backup or the restore.
