I am getting my third battery and charger! What's the deal with poor quality?

My macbook is a late 2009 model. It's always been running great, but I have some key issues that are making me question ever buying a mac again... For starters, I am purchasing my third battery and charger since owning this computer. I am not very happy with the quality of these devices... The battery is buldged out, and looks like it's ready to explode any day! The power supply is frayed, and exposing bare wires! What is the deal with such poor quality products? I always thought Apple was top notch in high quality, but lately, I've been proven wrong...

Seems to me that these issues REALLY need to be addressed by Apple. The reviews on the power supplies are ridiculous! Numorous complaints, yet Apple has YET to do anything about it! So my question is, what is Apple going to do about these issues? These need to be addressed, and fixed, ASAP! I owned a Dell laptop for 6 years, and never had an issue with the batteries I had, OR the power supply, and it cost me half the price of this macbook.

That would be awesome, if the nearest service area wasn't 4 hours away.... It would cost me just as much in gas to drive down there as it would just to buy a cheap replacement off of ebay...

What's the deal with the battery?

I just bought a new video iPod a few days ago. I've loaded all of my songs onto it, and loaded a few videos on it also. I've FULLY charged it, and I watched about 15 minutes of video on it. After that video is done, it says the battery is at about 1/3rd full. 1/3rd battery life after 15 minutes of video, then I play a few songs, and the battery meter goes up to about half full. Then after a few songs I play another video and the battery meter immediately goes to 0% full. What in the world is the deal with this thing? Is it accurate? If it is, can this really be that I can only watch about 20 minutes of video on it until the battery is completely dead? Anyone else having this issue?

First you really need to try charging your ipod to full then run it empty then charge it again, do this three or four times and it will sync your meter to your ipod. Please note though that the meter is a guide and just a guide, it does not always acuratly display the correct charge of your battery. I have noticed when I have my video on, my meter is lower then when I am playing songs. But I have found that mine is fairly acurate when I first turn it on before I play songs or do anything. I always check it that way so I have a good idea of where I am at. It takes out all the variables, but I have had my nano in the red and gotten 5 hours out of it... so go figure... my video when it hits red, has maybe 1 hr tops.. depending on what I am doing, if it is video... like 20 mins or less.

What's the deal with 7:22 For iCal and iPhoto

Ok, so I'm having this problem where on every single saved picture or document the "Get Info" tab shows it as being created at either 7:22 AM or 7:22 PM. Also, all of my events on iCal show up automatically as happening at 7:22 when I select the "Show Time in Month View" option under Preferences. Any ideas?..

Sure. Once you open Terminal, you will be presented with a shell prompt. The "shell" is what's running inside the terminal, and is what processes the commands you type in. Common shells are sh, bash, zsh, csh, tcsh. You are probably running bash by default. For you, it really doesn't matter what shell you are running.
Your prompt will probably look similar to this:
<machine name>:~ <username>$
where <machine name> is the name of your machine, and <username> is the name you logged into your system with. So for me, this looks like:
tomservo:~ glsmith$
So, at this prompt, I wanted you to type:
cp gradparty.jpeg ~/Desktop/testpic.jpeg
The "cp" is a program that copies files. That invocation says "copy file gradparty.jpeg to a new location located in the user's home folder, in the sub-folder called Desktop, and rename it to testpic.jpeg". Note that I used a shortcut -- in Unix, the "~" stands for the home directory (aka folder) of the user issuing the command. It's a quick way to get rooted to your home folder without having to type the full path.
Another thing to note is that the above command assumes that you are in the folder that contains the file "gradparty.jpeg". To get there from the Terminal, you will have to use the "cd" command. For example, let's say I have this image in a sub-folder called Graduation inside my Pictures folder. From the Terminal, I could get there by typing:
tomservo:~ glsmith$ cd Pictures/Graduation
and I could verify that the image is there by then typing:
tomservo:~ glsmith$ ls -l gradparty.jpeg
"ls" is what lists files in a directory (similar to "dir" in Windows).
So, once you've done the copy, you will have a new file sitting on your Desktop. This is what I want you to look at in the Finder to see if the times are still messed up.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

What's the deal with Final Cut Express HD and me?

A few months ago, I encountered a lot of problems when I was trying to capture some HD video using Final Cut Express H.D. I've set my camera (a JVC GR-HD1U) to the MPEG2 setting, and I changed the set up in Final Cut to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. The good news is that I was able to capture for about 15 seconds. Then the capture stops, and a message comes up telling me that I have reached the end of the tape. Only I haven't.
So.....what's the deal here?
Is there something that I am overlooking, or doing wrong? Or is it just not meant to be for me to capture HD Video?
If someone could let me know, I would appreciate it.

Am I right in thinking this camera isn't compatible/on the supported list? Does it work with iMovie? Perhaps you could capture there and import into FCE?

What is the deal with data charges?

I'm hoping someone can help me out. I have been a Verizon Wireless customer for many years, and have never had a problem with the services - until today. This morning, when I turned on my phone, I was informed that a software update was available and that it would take about 13 minutes to load. So, okay, I run it, jump in the shower, and by the time I'm done, it's complete. Great, a minor change (the battery icon changed from green to gray), looks fine. As I'm going about my day, I start getting text messages from Verizon immediately followed by an email with the same info - "you've used 75% of your data, you've used 85% of your data plan, you've used 90% of your data plan, you've gone over your allowable usage and may be charged." The last one I received more than once. I have had the same data plan since I purchased my latest phone about 1 1/2 years ago, and I have NEVER had this problem - and I have used my phone the same way I always have. I just find it unusual that this occurred the same day I ran a software update. AND....along with the software update came a message that I may have to charge my phone after it was done (it had been on full power). By the afternoon, I did indeed have to charge it and I did so without turning it off (maybe that was my mistake?). When I unplugged it only about 2 hours later, it was extremely HOT - and the battery had only charged about 25%. Of course, I shut it off completely. I'm wondering if that has to do with the phone itself -

Check all your app and data settings - when you run an update, and the phone reboots, sometimes (most times?) settings go to a default mode, and the default may not be the most efficient use of data or battery for you.
Check to see that your Network is set to LTE/CDMA (mine seems to revert to GLOBAL when I get updates....). Set your app updates to happen over wifi only, and check that your photo backups and other settings are backing up over wifi. If your phone a "sleep mode", use it to shut off data if your phone is idle for awhile.
Review all the power and data usage settings to be sure they are conserving your data and power most efficiently for the way you use your phone. I've found that updates reset a lot of things, and not always the way I have had it set up, so though I'm not doing anything different, the phone is using data and power differently than before the update.

So what's the deal with AIM and Push notifications?

So we all get 3.0. AIM is supposed to get push. So going into the AIM prefs, "push" is the same old send an SMS to the iPhone number. The SMS comes in, you hit reply and the iPhone opens SMS app!!! It doesn't open AIM.
This is nuts. Talk about things never changing.

What's the deal with DVI and Thunderbolt displays?

I have up and until now only ever had a MacBook, I planned on getting an iMac desktop but that didn't work out. However, now I am set on getting a Mini, but I remember there was a lot of comotion with the display connector and was hoping someone could guide me on that. I am looking to get a second hand late 2012 Mini, 2.3GHz and 16GB RAM.
I know there are Thunderbolt displays and DVI ones and converters and all that but what is the issue? Which one should I get?

All I can say is that I have a TB display with my Mac Mini (late 2012) and it works great. The Mini has a TB port so works with the display perfectly. If you do not want a display that has speakers, camera, mic and ports on the back then you could get a less expensive non Apple monitor but I see some users have display issues depending on the specific monitor being used.. I will others comment on that.
