I am gifting my macbook air to a family member....

As I do not want him using my apple ID, if I add a new admin user can i link that to a new apple ID and then delete my old user account?
I would re-install OS X so everything of mine is wiped but I will not have access to an internet connection to download and install it, nor will I be anywhere near an apple store.

I purchased an Air Mac and can't get the address book on it.  Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do.  I have an IPhone and an IPad and they both have clouds but I don't see one on my Air Mac.

  • Give MacBook mid 2007 to family member

I want to give my MacBook, running Lion 10.7.5, to my daughter as a replacement for her older MacBook.   I want to remove all my data but leave applications.  I would like to make her the administrator on the computer leaving nothing of mine there.   How does one accomplish this?

You’ve run into the one problem with the newer Operating Systems (10.7, 8, 9). They are tied to the users Apple ID and password so that no one else can re-download them. The older Operating Systems (10.6, 5) came on a DVD and could be used by anyone. Just pop in the DVD and erase the drive and reinstall.
You can order a 10.6 install disk from Apple and after installing it use the App Store to order 10.7 Lion with your Apple ID and password.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard After you’ve installed that then download the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
For 10.7 Lion you can get a redemption code to use in the App Store here. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion

  • Reset factory settings on early 2008 Macbook Air - no reinstall disks

    Hi,
I just purchased a January 2008 Macbook Air for a family member.  The other person wiped it clean of their personal data but I want to put it back to factory settings so it's a fresh start from scratch.
I have no idea if these models came with any kind of reinstall disks or flash drives, but this wasn't included with the purchase.
I have a late 2010 Macbook Air myself which came with a Reinstall Drive for Mac OS X v10.6 + iLife '11.  (model no. A1384).
All I need to know is whether my reinstall drive will work on the 2008 model before I run the disk utility and wipe everything.
I don't own an external CD drive or super drive.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

That computer came with restore discs for Leopard and iLife '08. You can purchase replacements from Apple Support:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
For Mac App Store: Apple - Support - Mac App Store.
For iTunes: Apple - Support - iTunes.
It is unlikely the discs that came with your 2010 MBA will install on the older model, but you can certainly try. It is, however, a violation of the software license to install OS X on more than one CPU at a time.
I have no idea what you mean be a "reinstall drive." Your computers came with DVDs, not drives. You can use any external drive that can read dual-layer discs and connect via USB.

  • Can I return my macbook air that I brought during the holidays (Thanksgiving)

I was gifted a Macbook air during the thanksgiving season, and since I am a computer science developer ( a student to be precise), I want to return my Mac and opt in for a Windows machine ( so that I can get enough software support if needed, there are several people around me with a pc). I was wondering, how can I return my laptop ? What are the terms and conditions ?
    Thank you in advance.

I would think you cannot return a product after the return date has passed.
Call the Apple Store and ask them.

  • I've been given a Macbook Air as a gift (with OS 10.7.5). Garageband is missing and I can't dl the app store version because apparently my OS is too old. Help??

I've been given a Macbook Air as a gift (with OS 10.7.5). Garageband is missing and I can't dl the app store version because apparently my OS is too old. Help??

Try to by an iLife '11  installation DVD - perhaps you can find it at Amazon or eBay.
Or try to update the MacOS X version of your MacBook Air to MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks. If your  MBA qualifies for the Mavericks update, you should be able to buy GarageBand 10.0 from he AppStore.

  • I bought a macbook air a week and a half ago and now if you buy a macbook air they give you a free gift card, wheres mine?

After spending all of this money for for my macbook air and know you get a free gift card with it, I feel like I should apply for that promo. It's dumb for apple to reward new users and I have owned apple stuff for 7 years and i've spent over $10,000 dollars and they won't return that to loyal customers but they will give $100 to new users.

I never intended to make it sound like you're a bad person.
My only point is that sometimes, manufacturers start deals or promotions after some previous customers have made purchases.  That should be the manufacturers' right.  It's not like the folks who made purchases prior were cheated in any way.  They got what they thought they were buying.
Yes, you and I and all Apple customers should be thanked.  I think we are already.  I feel appreciated.  I have had several instances where my Apple customers needed in-warranty service and was provided this service without any hesitation.  I feel appreciated by having the company continue to provide exceptional products and services.

  • Just bought a macbook air through education store and didn't get gift card to app store

I thought there was a deal going that if you buy through the education store you also get an 100$ gift card to the app store with purchase. I ordered my macbook air a week ago when the promotion was still running and it still is, but I didn't get the gift card with my purchase. Did other people get it?

I am in a similar situation. I purchased a MacBook Air last week for my husband as a gift. We are both students right now, but I ignorantly bought the Air from the regular store. When I realized it I called Customer Care and all they offered to do was give me the discounted pricing. I am very disappointed... It doesn't seem right.
The Air just got to California, so it's still in the process of being shipped. Maybe I should go to a retail store and complain once it arrives. Any suggestions?

  • TS5150 I got my Apple TV a year ago as gift. I was mirroring from my Macbook Air ok until today.  I can mirror video but the sound stay on my Mac.

When I use Airplay, I can mirror video from my Macbook Air but there was no sound from TV (the sound on my Air still on).  I had use my Mac to do Airplay for six months without problem until now. My wife can use her iPad-4 to watch TV with Airply fine without the sound problem.  My Macbook Air was purchased in summer of 2011 running Marverick at the moment.  Can you help?

Welcome to the Apple Community psalay.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
        1.    Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
        2.    Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
        3.    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
        4.    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
        5.    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
        6.    Restart your mobile device.

  • Does friend need to repurchase o/s on gifted macbook air?

I gave my Macbook Air to friend, do they need to repurchase the o/s and iLife software. Since I turned the computer on and associated with my ID. I never registered it. Please let me know - thank you!

The licensing restrictions are a bit confusing:
If your MBA came with Lion or Mountain Lion preinstalled, you may make a one time transfer of the license for the OS to a buyer, but have to call Apple to do so because it is tied to several IDs.
If your MBA came with Snow Leopard and you purchased Lion and/or Mountain at the app store, that license is not transferable. You must uninstall it and reinstall the original OS. The buyer can then purchase their own copy of Lion or Mountain Lion. The buyer would not be able to reinstall or update because the license is tied to the Apple ID used for the purchase as well as the machine ID and so would no longer match.

  • Can I trade my MacBook Air for a new MacBook Air that just came out?

I was wondering that I bought the MacBook Air in November of 2010 and I would like to get the new MacBook Air can I just do a trade from Best Buy or Apply?

Well... you can return your Air as part of Apple's recycle program and get an Apple Gift Card for it's value.  Unfortunately, they (well, a company that does this sort of thing) sets the "value" which is nothing close to what you would be able to get on your own:
    http://www.apple.com/recycling/computer/
I don't think anyone intended to insult you.  You sort of implied in your original post that you should be able to exchange something that you purchased 8 months ago.  In fairness, I'm aware of very few places that offer a return policy that liberal.  When you clarified that you could pay up front to be guaranteed a certain percentage of the original value over time... that certainly made more sense (although Apple does not offer the exact thing... but only what I had posted the link to above).
Having said all that... when I purchased my Air, it was only about a month or so before the new ones came out.  I knew that the new ones were coming out.  I was actually concerned about the loss of the dedicated GPU and the fairly significant drop in GPU performance with the integrated Intel processor.  Granted, the new processors are about twice as powerful... that's significant.  But, I don't really do anything processor intensive on my machine.  So doubling the power for me was a non-issue.  I do just want the OS to run smoothly and fluidly and the nVidia GPU in the machine that you (and I) have does a great job.  So not only did I know that new Airs were coming out, I bought mine because I didn't want the newer model.  Of course the new Airs have Thunderbolt as well... but I'm not expecting that to take off for a while yet (and USB 2.0 has worked fine for me for years).  If you do processor intensive stuff, you could have good reason for wanting the newly released Air (although in getting the last model, I would expect you did't have heavy duty processing needs).  I personally am happy I have the previous model and the release of the new model does not devalue mine in the least.

  • MacBook Airs announced yesterday, a few questions (model numbers especially)

Hello - does anyone know the model number fot the core i7 MacBook Airs that were just announced yesterday?  I can find the model numbers for the core i5 models, but not sure if the core i7's are considered different models or are just only available as a customization options to the base models, direct from Apple?  I want to buy from Amazon since with credit card rewards points I can get about $1000 worth of Amazon gift cards - no option to convert credit card reward points to Apple Store gift cards, unfortunately.
Also, I do want to use this computer with an HDMI-enabled TV - would it be better to buy Mini-Display Port to DVI or Mini-Display Port to HDMI cable?  I currently have a DVI-to-HDMI adapter that I use in conjunction with an HDMI cable to plus my old DVI - enabled Cure 2 Duo MB Pro into my TV.
Also, most importantly, I am concerned about built in batter of all the MacBooks these days.  How much does it cost to replace, and will leaving the battery plugged in and charged all the time ruin it, or have MacBook batteries advanced beyond that limitation?

    1. i personally don't know how to properly network. i managed to do it somehow, but i don't know the exact process. i'm sure someone else can help you with this.
    2. the only way to make it less aggressive is to turn it off entirely. i never use that feature and i always adjust the brightness manually.
    3. how to make sure you have all the updates is by simply running software update. anything your computer needs to run smoothly will show up there. if no updates appear, then you're fine.
    4. the fans are located in the bottom portion of the MBP. the heat issue is normal. saying it gets really really hot doesn't give anyone any indication of what the actual temperatures are. my idea of hot is likely different from your idea of hot. your MBP is likely not running hotter than any other MBP.
    5. i think you just close the lid while it's on to do this. or just set the energy settings so that the screen shuts off after x minutes of inactivity.
