I am going on a safari in South Africa, which apps should I buy?

Does anybody have good ideas and why?

Not an app, but the iPad camera connection kit would seem like a useful idea - copy pics from camera to iPad as you go.
If you are into photography and you want to edit or adjust pics, Photogene is very good. Also, any of the apps that allow you to upload to Facebook or Flickr or SmugMug or whatever your preferred online photo site is.
If you want to take notes, Alfons Schmid's Notebooks is pretty good

  • Does anyone have any idea when Apple will have one Global App store. In South Africa the apps available on the App Store are pathetic, eg. Angry Birds is not available to Iphone/ipad users here, however android users can purchase this app no problem.

If this continues, with the competition in the smart phone/android market, South Africans will start to can Apple devices due to the pathetic App Store for South Africa. The most popular games and Apps are not available here and until Apple get smart and make a Global Store for purchases not matter where you are in the world, Apple will continue to loose support. I have everything Apple, but am tired of the run around to try and buy good Apps.

If you will allow me to say so ... Calm down.
It really isn't the fault of Apple.  The developers of apps, the writers of music and of books all have copyright or exclusivity deals through agents in order to market their creations.
These arrangements are usually conducted on an individual national basis and as a result what would be allowed in one country is not allowed in another if that is what the agent wants.
Apple has to negotiate through this mire to get the best deal it can yet always accepting that many other interested parties want similar privileges.
So you can see, like politics, world wide agreements are just not possible.

Likely the 15" with a anti-glare screen is your puppy.
Powerful, can run 3D games, can see the screen while outside or overhead classroom lights, a very fine machine capable of doing plenty.
I have the 17" and it's a monster, can run three or four operating sytems at once.

  • South Africa

Hi, I would like to find out when is Creative Cloud for Teams going to be available in South Africa, as it would be a much better solution for our company with 4 designers.

This information is a little out of date. I just spoke to the Film and Publications Board in Johannesburg. They said that to rate an individual game, they charge R2000.00. However, in the case of cellphone games, they have made agreements with certain local suppliers to allow them to self-rate games, and with the FPB to review at intervals. This allows them not to have to pay for tiny or free games this large amount. Also, they have assisted Nokia in the set-up of the local Ovi store where games are sold for Nokia Symbian phones.
They have explained to me that Apple has never approached them in any way to even talk about games or game ratings. So they are themselves at a loss over why Apple is not selling games here in South Africa, as many others are without any issues. This just proves that Apple is the party that is not coming to the party!
I have submitted endless requests to Apple, and invariably their answer is (1) the developer hasn't published their game for your region (which is incorrect, as they check the "worldwide release" box or (2) They say something about iTunes Music, but we're talking about a category in the App Store.
All this is now also true for the MAC App Store.... Which means that people won't play games on their Macs via the Mac App Store, they will have to get actual disc version instead. Or, just get a UK or US-based gift-card system going...

  • Travel to South Africa

I'm going to be working in South Africa for a couple months and taking my MBP, iPod, portable printer, cell phone etc. with me. What do I need in the way of power adapters/converters etc.? I've heard that power there can be somewhat unreliable...

The power adapter that comes with your MBP (and most cell phone and camera battery chargers - check the small text on the charger itself) can accept input voltages from 100-240V and 50 or 60 Hz. South Africa is 230 V AC, so for those items all you will need is a plug adapter to fit your plug into those outlets - available from Radio Shack, or any mall-type travel store. Note that Apple's World Travel Adapter Kit may not include a 'type M' adapter, which is used in Mozambique, South Africa, and Swaziland (and has been mostly phased out in Hong Kong; Hong Kong is listed as a supported country in the Apple description, so if you are going to go that route you may want to call Apple to check).
For things that plug directly into the wall without a power brick/adapter of some sort, you would need a step-down transformer - again, visit the travel store for that.
As for unreliable power, there's not much you can do if it just goes out (which happened occasionally to me in East Africa). In terms of "dirty" power, the AC-to-DC conversion carried out by the power brick filters that pretty well. You can buy a surge suppressor ('power strip') once you get there, or bring one.
    Happy travels!

  • Every time I try to download and app to my iPhone, it tells me that I need to change to South African App Store. I live in South Africa and have purchased apps before, what has changed ?

When purchasing an app on my iPhone, it says I must first change from the US App Store to South Africa, I live in South Africa and have downloaded several apps before without any problem. What has changed ?

    Hi HayCam,
Sounds like you accidently got changed to another store....
So, go to Settings>iTunes & App Store, and click on your AppleID at the top. Then click on View account, sign in, and then click on Country/Region, and follow the instructions to change your store to South Africa.
That should take care of it!
    Cheers,

  • Enroll for iOS development South Africa

    Hi
I am from South Africa.  I have applied for a company license about three weeks ago.  My status have been at the 'review and submit' stage for the last three weeks.  I have send a message to Apple via their development contact page and allthough they state that my query will be answered within one working day, I still have not heard anything.  Looking at the contact numbers, there are no South African numbers so I am not sure who to call.
How long does it typically take aprove a development license in South Africa?
Whom should I contact to get more information?

    Hi Michael
The 'review and submit' is on Apple's side.  According to the status subscribtion Apple is supposed to review the detail I gave them.
I also got an e mail when I applied for this license that once my details have been successfully reviewed, I will receive an e mail with futher instruction to complete my enrollment for a license. This was all about three weeks back.

  • I uploaded that new IOS 8.0 and now I cannot open my mail, Safari, or the new "TIPS" app. Does Apple have some sort of help, other than going to a store that is over 40 miles away?

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • What's going on with safari on ipad and iphone not connecting?

What's going on with safari on ipad and iphone not connecting?

I am using safari on my iPad to respond here. What problems are you having? Do you have a good wifi connection? Try a reset, hold the power button and home button until you see the apple then let go.

  • Start up goes directly to safari

My son hit a bunch of buttons on the startup screen.
When starts up, goes directly to safari, wont login. Just a grey fabric background with safari on menu bar.
Neither c or s key get to either startup or am able to boot from backup drive.
Will not allow access to startup disk.
    2011 imac 2,2i5

    Check a couple of things.
First if Safari (or any app) is left open when the computer is shut down in Lion by default it will startup again. You can overide this by checkmarking the box in System Preferences - General - Restore windows when quitting and re-oppening apps.
The next place to look is System Preferences - Users & Groups - Startup Items and check to see if Safari is in there. If it is highlight it and click the - symbol below it.

  • Hi there - I have an iPhone 4s which I bought from the apple store here in the UK. I am going to South Africa at the end of the year and I want to use a SA sim card - do I need it unlocked?

    Hi,
As far as I know, all the iPhones bought online or in the Apple Store ar unlocked.
Only carriers (e.g. T-mobile, Vodafone, O2) are able to lock a phone, Apple won't do that (afaik).
This would mean that you shouldn't need to unlock your iPhone.
    Kind regards,

  • Are we ever going to get angry birds in South Africa

Are we ever going to get angry birds in South Africa, afta leaving android jus found out i cnt get angry birds on iphone 5

From what I understand, games are not available in the SA App Store as the goverment cannot make up their minds regarding the age classification of games. So it's not Apple and not the developers but the SA goverment that is blocking the sale of games in SA. The only way to get access to games is to have a US or UK iTunes account.
