I am going to replace my HD

I am going to replace my HD with a new one.  Can I install directly from my Time Machine, or do I have to install first Leopard, then the Snow Leopard upgrade and then do the Time MAchine?

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

since I've got it for five days ago, I only use it for three times....
Are they going to replace it with a new one ?

Most likely yes. There's a manufacturers warranty against defects for a year. I'd contact your place of purchase and talk to them about it.

  • Insurance is going to replace MDD, any Mac Suggestions???

Quite sadly, we had a house fire - everyone is OK, I was briefly hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns. The house was completely filled with acrid and caustic grease smoke and the fans of my MDD just dragged it in. Its cheaper to replace than clean so insurance is going to replace my MDD and I was thinking of a used Mac Pro. I know almost nothing about them though and thought maybe some of the trusty old MDDers could give me some guidance...

    Sorry for your troubles.

... my sealed hard drives should be ok...
I'm no expert, but I would not depend on the hard drives to last much longer, you don't know what kind of temperature extremes they may have been subjected to, if beyond the operational temp. range. You may want to ask if you can get insurance to cover professional hard drive data recovery services, if you have important data on those disks. Otherwise, plan on replacing them, and don't even turn them on another computer until you have the empty new destination disks ready to try to copy everything off of them first. You may be lucky and be able to operate them long enough to copy everything off of them.
Your story is making me think seriously about making another backup copy of my computer and mailing it to a relative for safe keeping and disaster recovery.

    Hi Kuhl54,
If you have questions about turning on iTunes Match on an iOS device, you may find the following article helpful:
iTunes: How to add a computer or iOS device to iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4913
    Important:
When enabling iTunes Match on your iOS device, the music library on your iOS device will be deleted and then replaced with your music in iCloud.
Syncing music with iTunes will be disabled while iTunes Match is enabled on your iOS device.

  • Is Apple going to replace Scratched Nano's?

I like many others have just purchased an iPod Nano, and it already has scratches on it after only a few days.
Obviously this is a production fault relating to inferior materials!
Is Apple going to refund or replace Nano's suffering from this fault, as it is a manufacturing fault in my eyes!

  • New Oracle Store is going to replace Oracle iStore

I have heared that Oracle is looking for some better e-commerce solution over 'Oracle iStore'. They think 'New Oracle Store' is better solution.
    Visit following url - https://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCCtdMinisites.jsp
    it says...
"This application is no longer processing direct customer online orders and has been replaced by the new Oracle Store (www.oracle.com/store). Those customers responding to quotes from Oracle should still use this application to accept the quotes and process their orders. "
Any thoughts what 'New Oracle Store' might be and how it may proceed to take place of existing 'Oracle iStore'? Recently only they released R12, and there are many customer still on 11.5.10 still planning to upgrade to R12. Should they wait and go for this new better ecommerce solution?
    All ideas are welcomed.

    Yes, you are right.
Oracle bought over Apex and they are integrating that as Oracle Store. You can see that in following link.

  • I am going to replace my 3 year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro Retina display machine.  I have been told by Apple that I can use the Migration Assistant ON MY WIRELESS NETWORK (no cables) to transfer data... I've read this can take AGES.. True?

I am planning to replace my 3+ year old MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro, Retina display... I have been told by "chat" on the Apple site that I can transfer my data wirelessly... on my network.. Is is a good option?  I don't want to invest in cables if I can help it... since the old machine has firewire and the new one has thunderbolt!  Will the wireless transfer take forever... as in 30-50 hours???  I've been hearing these horror stories...

  • Is iCloud Photos going to replace iPhoto?

I see that using iCloud Photo (beta) prohibits syncing photos via the iOS device and iPhoto on a Mac. Is this because Apple is looking to discontinue iPhoto in the future? Should I start transferring all my photos from iPhoto into iCloud? Man, if that's the case, that's going to take a lot of time and space.....

I managed to locate the cause of my missing emails. I upgraded both a Macbook and an iMac to OS Lion back in July. After the upgrade, I move house and only setup the iMac a week ago, logged in and left is sitting in my study. iCloud used imap, which means whatever happens on any computer with access to your email is reflected on all connected deviced, as well as webmail.
Back in August, I had an issue with emails not appearing in my inbox on my Macbook. I identified the problem, which was the Lion installed disabling the Spamseive (3rd party spam filter) plugin. The missing plugin meant that all emails were moved to Spamseive's folder, but not processed and returned to my inbox. I had discovered this on my Macbook and reinstalled SpamSeive few hours after the Lion update.
Unfortuneatly I did not rectify te problem on the iMac before packing it away. After I set it up a week ago, the iMac has been fulling all incoming emails into a local folder on its harddrive, thereby reventing them from appearing in my inbox on all devices. Instructions on correcting this problem can be found here:

  • Im going to replace my logicboard myself...any tips?

i cant afford to have apple fix my powermac, they told me my logic board was fried so i think im just gonna grab the part number and find one online. are there any tips i should know before tackling this?

If you're going to attempt this yourself, I'd try and locate a copy of the Apple Service Manual for your particular model. It'll have the steps to go through to actually do the mobo swap. These are not available for the general public, so you're going to have to do some searching on the internet (PDF) or eBay to find one.
Mac-Pro.com is a good online place to purchase the parts you need.
You're also going to need a copy of the Apple Service Diagnostic DVD to run the thermal recalibration routines after the mobo swap. Without it, your fans will run much faster than they should and will make a lot of noise. Like the service manual, the service diagnostic DVD is not available to the general public.

  • Is Verizon going to replace Damaged SD Cards after the OTA update

I have read several post of damaged SD cards and lost data after the recent over the air update.  I am one of the people who lost all data and the card was ruined.  I can't even format in a PC and the phone doesn't recognize it.   So I now have to buy a new SD card?  That does not set well with me!

Which phone model are you referring to?

  • I am going to replace  the memory module, will I loose the existing stored memory

I have a imac desktop with one memory module,, would like to insert 2 new memory modules,, will I loose stored memory

No. Nothing is stored in RAM when the computer's off, and you'll need to turn it off while upgrading its RAM.
RAM and drive space aren't the same. Back up the contents of the internal drive.

  • Is the Cloud going to replace the hard copy of Photoshop and every other Adobe software?

I just got a petition web address regarding Adobe's initiative to only come out with a  Cloud  Version of CS and I assume every other of their software. Personally I dont' like "renting" or leasing, but having my own copy, car, house, appliances, software.
    Can someone confirm this please?

Please answer the question. What plans does Adobe have for non-cloud Lightroom beyond the Lightroom 5 release?
Adobe’s repeated evasion on this matter is deeply troubling and implies the worst — that LR5 is the end of the line. Over here, Adobe has said “The Photoshop team will provide bug fixes and security updates for Photoshop CS6 while it is still available for purchase.” No such assurance was made for Lightroom. That makes it very difficult to take it on faith that there will ever be any new features added to non-cloud Lightroom after LR5.
