I am having trouble copying files from disk to disk, help.

I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 running Tiger 10.4.3. I am having a problem copying files since I installed Tiger. I am trying to copy from drive "LaCie d2 195 GB", this is a Firewire 800 external drive, to drive "250GB HD", this is an internal drive. The folder that I am having trouble with this morning has 16 PhotoShop files inside of it, it is 768.5 MB. I get this message:
The finder canot comlete the opperation because some data in "Black Valve 3.psd" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I tried to open the file in PhotoShop and it would not open, I had to force quit PhotoShop twice to make PhotoShop to close. I opened a copy of the same file with PhotoShop, that was in another folder on drive "250GB HD" and replaced the file on drive "LaCie d2 195 GB". I opened the newly saved file from drive "LaCie d2 195 GB" with PhotoShop with no problem.
To test the time needed I coppied the same folder from "250GB HD" to my startup drive in 48 seconds. Next I copied the folder a second time from "LaCie d2 195 GB" to the "250GB HD", it took 10 minutes and 54 seconds.
My question is do you think the drive is bad or might I reformat "LaCie d2 195 GB" and make it work better?

Error code -36 is an i/o error. That usually means that the computer is having a problem reading or writing the file you're working with, which in turn usually means that the drive has a problem. A sudden slowdown of the magnitude you meantion usually means a severely damaged directory or physical damage to the disk. I'd run a disk fixer such as Disk Utility or Disk Warrior on the slow drive. If it reports problems which can't be fixed, which I suspect it will, I'd back everything up. I just had a LaCie 250GB drive die on me with similar problems (i/o errors, very slow access) and returned it under the warranty.

I am having trouble moving files from iPhoto to a thumb drive. Sometimes I can move 20 photos next time I can only move 2 photos or 0---this is during the same session. I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet. Can someone please help?

I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this. I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with. Needs clarification. You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer. So which are you trying to do? Either way, sounds like a browser issue. You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

Having trouble copying files wirelessly

I'm trying to copy mp3 files from my iMac G5 (10.3) to my Powermac G5 (10.4) over wireless network. For some reason, of the 3 files, only 1 is giving me a problem, saying:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priveleges for "newsong.mp3"."
I checked info on the file and it appears not to be locked, and the strange thing is the other 2 files copied just fine. The mp3 also plays just fine when I double-click it.. just won't seem to copy.
Any ideas?

Having trouble copying files to time capsule.

Hello all. Apologies if this isn't in the correct forum. I didn't see one for the time capsule. And thanks in advance for any help.
I recently purchased a new macbook pro after my old macbook pro had a lot of issues. (It had a good run, but was probably 3-4 years old.)
I was trying to copy some files from the old computer to the new computer using my time capsule as an external hard drive. I don't have a firewire cord, and the migration assistant program seemed to take far too long. So I'd hoped to just copy the files onto the time capsule, then copy them onto my new computer.
However, I've encountered several problems. A message will pop up, error -36, and state that some files cannot be copied. Rather than not copy those and copy the rest of the files, the whole process stops. I cannot go through and pick out the individual files, because I can't tell what's causing the problem until the error actually occurs.
Any advice on how to get around this? Or am I missing an easier way to transfer data (such as an itunes library)?

Your best bet will be to get a firewire cable and start over. Anything else will be tedious, likely have permissions problems, and be easy to miss things.
Since you've already got who knows what copied, your best option is probably to set up a temporary Admin account, log on with it and delete the one(s) you created. Be sure to delete the home folder(s), too, when prompted.

Copying files from Macbook to PC help (network)

I just got a 13" Macbook the other day and I'm learning how to use it. I've been playing around with the Photo Booth program where you can take snapshots or videos with the built-in camera. Specifically, I have created a movie with Photo Booth and want to copy it to a folder on my Windows XP PC via the network.
I have networking set up just fine and I have enabled sharing with a folder on my PC (and allowed network users to modify the files checkbox). So these are the steps I'm taking to copy the file, but it's not working:
1) I have dragged the movie from Photo Booth to the desktop on my Macbook. It is a .mov file appx 70MB in size.
2) Then I drag the file from the desktop into Finder where I open my network and open my shared folder on the PC and let go.
3) The file shows that it is being copied (the bar successfully moves from left to right indicating the file is being copied). But at the end of the copy process I hear an audible sound and the file is not present in the folder on my PC. I do, however, have a file called ".DS_Store" on my PC in the folder I was trying to copy the .mov file to. At first, this made me think of my Nintendo DS, but then I discovered this is just a file the Mac creates in every folder.
But the .mov file is not there! No matter what I do, I cannot get the file to copy there. I have even tried using Edit/Copy on the file on my Mac and then pasting into the folder. Same thing happens.
What am I missing? I have successfully been able to copy some MP3's from my PC to my MAC, but this is the first file I've tried to copy from my MAC to my PC.

It sounds like perhaps you are coping into a different folder than you think you are.
On the PC, place a file into the destination folder. On the Mac, open up the destination folder over the network. If you cannot see the file you just added, then we have confirmed that you are probably copying the file into a different location.

I am having troubles receiving files from my phone with Bluetooth

So, I am trying to send pictures from my phone to my MacBook Pro via Bluetooth. I have looked at other topics saying under "Sharing" in System Preferences I just have to check the bluetooth part and it will work but it still doesnt work. The only trouble I am having really is finding the files that are sent. I have it set to go to my Documents but I cant find it there. Any help would be great.

Iphone supports bluetooth for stereo headsets/speakers, telephone headsets/handsfree devices, some peer-to-peer apps from the app store, some keyboards and tethering where provided by the carrier.
Other than this, it will not connect to any phone/device/computer/etc.

I am having trouble importing files from file sharing in the same household. I have followed the tutorials but do not have the tab at the bottom of Itunes "Import to library"

When I go to file sharing on Itunes, I am unable to import files to my itunes. I can play them, but am unable to move them to my library. I have been through the tutorial and when I get to "show menu at the bottom of library" there is no menu. I do not have the tab "items not in my library" or "import" I have been through the upper tab and see no option in the view menu and have also consolidated the files. Any suggestions?

Having trouble exporting file from After Effects CS5.5

I am trying to add some titles to a Multi Camera mix I have finished. I have exported my multi cam that I created in Premiere Pro as an MPEG.
So hears what I have done:
- open After effects
- create new composition (HD 1080x1440- length 2:16 (so clip fits)
- I place my clip in the time line the type some text.
- in the effects bar I click the roll up and select "Browse Presets" which opens adobe bridge
- I apply my effects and they play back in elements fine...
When I try to export my clip as a Premiere Pro Project it doesnt keep my animated txt when I open it. Says it does not support the presets. his
Con someone please help me export this project? Getting very frustrating. I need it as a High Res HD file

Create the titles in After Effects without the MPEG. (Or if you must use it as a reference, go ahead and do so, and then when you're done creating the title, delete the MPEG.)
Then go back to PP and select File>Dynamic Link>Import After Effects Composition... Navigate to the AE project that has the title, and bring in that composition. It will appear in your bin as a clip. Then you add it to the sequence and export the completed video with titles.

Having trouble moving files from iWeb to iTunes

I recently added a podcast page to my website www.soapboxhavoc.com and would like to submit it to iTunes. All goes well until iTunes asks for the file location. I put in the page url but it didn't work. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm having trouble migrating files from my MAC G5 Tower 2.3 gig hz. to new Mac Mini i7

I want to migrate the applications from my G5 Tower to my new Mac Mini. The mini says that Migration Manager on the G5 needs to be updated. I do an update and nothing comes up. I looked at the apple site and there is nothing either.

You need to use the Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder of your Mini, not the one on the G5.

Trouble loading file from another computer! Help!

Alright, I'm currently making a Flash animation for a final
exam project in school. I started it yesterday and today I thought
it would be a good idea to work on it at home, so I transfered a
copy of the Flash document to my Kingston USB mass storage stick.
When I tried to load the said document onto the computer I'm
currently on a message box popped up saying "Unexpected file
format" and fails to load the file. The same thing happens when I
try to load another Flash document that I had also stored on the
mass storage stick.
I'm using Flash MX Professional 2004, and I'm fairly certain
that the Flash program at my school is either Flash MX Professional
2004 or Flash MX 2004.
Can anyone help me?

Having trouble exporting photos from iPhoto to external drive.

I am having trouble copying files to my external drive. It is a shared external drive connected through my wireless router. I can copy some photo's to the externaldrive folder and they transfer no problem and some of the photo's from the same folder appear to be transfering but as soon as the copying window goes away so does the photo's from the folder I was putting them to. New to apple so I am still learning the in's and out's and I am sure it's probably something easy. Any help would be appreciated. The external drive I was using on a PC before and the Mac seems to see most everything so not sure if that matters or not. Pic and video's came from same camera on the same day.

What does that mean? Do you mean have your Library on an external drive? Yes, that's easy.
I have a network HDD connected to my router
Two issues here.
1. That NAS is not an appropriate disk for an iPhoto Library - iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. Later versions simply won't allow the Library on such devices.
2. Router? Wireless connection? A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
To move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Error -36 when attempting to copy files from an FTP

I recently got a new macbook pro, but am having trouble retrieving files from an FTP server I used to use with my old iMac with no problems. Whenever I try to copy the files from the FTP to my computer, I get Error Code -36 about being unable to write the files. I know it's not a problem with the FTP server because I was able to retrieve the files with a computer running Windows. Any idea how to fix this problem? I have it when using CuteFTP as well as the standard Mac FTP access through Finder.

Try the Unix forum under OS X Technologies. Additionally, use the built in ftp command.

Copying files from iMac to USB flash drives

I am having problems copying files from my iMac computer to USB flash drives. Sometimes, I get the error message: "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -50)."
How can I solve this problem?
This error message does not happen everytime but rather occasionally. Most of the files I am trying to copy to my USB flash drives are MS Word documents. I have tried using various brands of flash drive, but I still get this error message.
I use my USB flash drives for both Mac and Windows OS computers. For my 2GB Kingston Data Traveller flash drive, I checked its product datasheet on the Kingston website, and it says that it is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows OS, and that I can use it for cross-platform PC/Mac file transfers.
I also checked the Properties tab for this flash drive, and the File System for the drive is listed as "FAT."

I am pretty sure that these files were not open in MS Word when I tried to copy them.
I only get this error message/code for a handful of MS Word documents; the rest of my MS Word documents were copied successfully to my USB flash drive.
