I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive.  Help?

Aloha:
I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive
I have three internal HD's   The first I am running the system on 10.6.8 (which is up to date) , the second I do most of my work on  and the third I have partitioned into two and I am trying to install Lion on one of the patitions.
But Lion has decided it will only go on the first HD.
Above is the one I want to put it on, but it's not available and I can't change the partition scheme.  None of the things the directions state are usable??
What might I be doing wrong?
Thanks
Dan Page

Thanks again for a rapid responce.
I finally got lion on one partition and my daily "SilverKeeper" backup on the other.
Since the only thing I had on the two partition Hard drive  was  the back up and since the backup would get put on tonight any way I changed the drive to no partitions.  This gave me the ability to choose the GUID option, which I did and then I installed two partitions and successfuly istalled Lion on one of them.  I even tied Lion into the iCloud successfuly.
But I am not out of the woods yet!  I brought My brand new iPad to lunch and was informed that my iPad was synced to my Lion at home and I was on the cloud.  That blew my mind, I was impressed.
I then read  the Daily news with out problem, however, when I shut down my iPad, that was all she wrote.  I can not get the iPad back on.  The best I could do was see the revolving gear start and then freeze.  It's on charge now and I can not even get rid of the frozen gear.
Not sure this all has anything to do with the  recent installation on my main computer, but it's mighty suspicious.
Need some help!!
Thanks
Dan

    Thanks Dirk,
Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. • Any ideas on how I install Lion on a new hard drive

Any ideas on how I might install Lion on a new hard drive when I purchased the OS online from Apple prior to my hard drive failing?       I don't have a disk.

when you install your new drive, what happens? it should boot into internet recovery and you setup from there.
    does it not do that?
here is an article about how to force internet recover http://www.cultofmac.com/106669/force-lion-to-start-internet-recovery-on-your-20 11-or-later-mac-os-x-tips/
here is apple literature about the recovery partition (if you had a hard drive) http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
here is a do it yourself downloader that makes a usb stick the recovery disk. If you have data on the usb drive I would back it up, as this will erase everything else on the thumb drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

  • If I want to install Lions on a 2nd hard drive in my MacPro Desktop, will it allow me to do so if I have Leopard installed on the boot drive?

I have a blank 2nd hard drive that I am going to install in my MacPro desktop. The boot drive already contains the Leopard operating system. I want to install Lions on the blank hard drive. Will setup in Lions when it comes out, allow me to install Lions onto the 2nd hard drive since it should detect that I have a valid Apple operating system on the boot drive?

You can first install Snow Leopard then re-download Lion. Or you saved the original installer application then created a bootable Lion installer on a USB flash drive or DVD. Or you buy Apple's $69.00 USB flash installer.
You haven't told us what hindrances you've encountered, so you should post your own separate topic related to your problem and not threadjack another person's topic.

  • How do I install lion and format the hard drive?

How do I install lion and format the hard drive, as though this was a new mac.

If your Mac is a 2011 model and originally came with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple then you can use the Internet Recovery HD system to Wipe/Erase the Complete drive and Re-Install Lion.
If it is an older model, even and early 2011 model, that did NOT come with Lion Pre-Installed by Apple you can not sell or give it away with Lion installed on it. You have to install the original version of OS X on it.

  • Trouble installing Lion due to partition error

    Hi everyone,
So I don't know a whole lot about computers, and I have had my macbook for a couple years now and decided to install Lion last night. After I downloaded it, I got an error message saying that it could not be installed and I needed to change my HD's partitioning to GUID. The internal HD I have in my mac now I installed myself, and I must have accidentally clicked apple partition map instead of GUID when I installed it, which didn't cause a problem until now (my macbook has an intel processor). So i backed up everything on my HD to an external HD using carbon copy, hoping that I would just be able to reformat/partition my internal HD correctly and move everything back onto it from my external drive. I booted my computer using the external drive, and tried to repartition using disk utility, but I keep getting a partition error message that tells me the disk cannot be unmounted. I got the same message when I tried just erasing the disk first. Anyone know how I can fix this?
    Thanks, and Happy Holidays!!

Try starting from your Snow Leopard Install disc.

  • After installing Lion, my iomega ex. hard drive no longer recognized for time machine

Is all my back up gone? Lion does not see the iomega external hard drive. No more automatic backup? How can I restore to Leopard if Lion doesn't recogize the Iomega?

Thank you Jon for your reply.
I forgot to mention that I am actually in the process of becoming a certified apple portable hardware technician. Just started going through the training program.
I've taken many Apple computers apart and replaced most everything in them. I had to replace my original hard drive from Apple a few months ago after it was having serious problems.
I am familiar with DiskWarrior and such programs. But that's just the thing. The Hard drive is coming back with no errors and is working fine when attached to the iBook externally via Firewire.
I was thinking it has something to do with the logic board. But being I am not quite that advanced in my tech training I am unable to answer the problem on my own.

  • Can I instal lion clean on my hard drive?

I dont want to upgrade my current system. Its all a bit clogged up at the moment because of all the software I have installed on it. How can I do a clean install of lion on my hard drive?

Interested in getting an ATV, simply to interface my huge movie/tv show/music video collection directly to my TV. Currently, I have my entire collection in iTunes. I sync movies to watch on my iPod. Works great. Will the same movies get sync'd and be viewable through the ATV to my HDTV?
Any movies you sync to the ipod already will work on the tv.
does the ATV support only the same file types as iTunes?
Actually it supports less than itunes but anything that plays in itunes, itunes can convert for you.
Does the ATV allow you to manually manage what goes on it, like I can with the iPod? The reason is I have over 300gb of stuff, and don't want to sync all of it to the ATV at anyone time.
Yes you can manage what gets synced and what doesn't although the management isn't quite the same as on the ipod.

  • Can I simply clean install lion on a fresh hard drive?

This nonsense: To upgrade your Mac to OS X Lion, you must be running OS X Snow Leopard. If you have OS X v10.5 Leopard, purchase OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard now and install it on your Mac. Then buy OS X Lion as a digital download from the Mac App Store- seems very very un-apple.
So let me get this straight: I have to install an outdated OS (snow Leopard) in order to install Lion. ???
Remember when an OS was self contained, not an add-on upgrade feature?
I am puzzled- I would simply like to boot my mac pro from leopard (current os), and install LION on a newly placed, freshly formatted internal hard drive on
same computer. Why would i need to have the intermediary step?
The folks at apple store couldn't answer- even the genius folk weren't sure- dissappointing at best-
    Any help appreciated.

So the workaround is the flash drive?
I'd rather pay more to keep less code written to my machine-
it just makes no sense togo the other route-
I am genuinely dismayed that apple seems to have
hit (past tense) it's heyday, and now i watch as Windows-type logic
slowly infiltrates the once so ultra efficient, no nonsense MCintosh
    ideology..........

  • I am having trouble moving itunes library to external hard drive

It is a WD My book essential external hard drive (1 tb) that I just bought. I already have a ton of files I put on from my PC and I want to get my itunes library from my mac. When I try and drag the itunes folder into the hard drive folder it says  somthing like "Can not move 'itunes' because 'music' can not be modified'" help please. Not sure about the oporating system I added below.

i'm guessing but could the WD be NTFS formatted ?
if so, your Mac can only read from, but not write to it. you may have to install the NTFS 3G driver for it to work.
to install the driver, you need to be on OS X 10.4.11 !

  • Trouble installing 10.5 to new hard drive

I just installed a new 500gb hard drive to my macbook pro, i formatted it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and used disk utilities to restore from my old hard drive which copied the os and all my user files over.
I now want to reinstall the OS as Preserve Users and Network Settings but when i stick the drop in disk and select the hard drive it says:
"You cannot install Mac OS X on this Volume. To enable installation on this volume open Disk Utilities from the utilities menu and repartition the disk as GUID table. Not you will lose all data on this disk by repartitioning.
My main goal is to reinstall the OS without losing my user files, applications and not have to reinstall or enter cd keys and all my preferences. any ideas?

the drive in an intel Mac has to be formatted with GUID partition scheme to install OS X on it. Yours is almost certainly formatted MBR right now. You have to reformat the drive (this will wipe it). in disk utilities select the whole drive (model, not name) and click on the partition tab. click on Options and choose GUID partition tab. set the format to mac os extended journaled and click "apply". after that you can clone your old drive to the new one. you can use the restore tab in DU as you did or a 3rd party cloner like CCCloner or Superduper.

  • HT1926 Im having troubles installing itunes on my windows 8 laptop, help?

I'll click the download button and without even asking me to run anything it just says "thanks for downloading" but I haven't even done anything.?

I'd first try downloading an installer from the Apple website using a different web browser:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa), do you get a working installer?

  • I am having trouble getting access to fonts on hard drive. In particular Helvetica Neue Black.  It seems that since HelveNeu.dfont is a system font Font Book  does not give me the option to activate HelveticaNeuBlack.

We recently started using Font Book instead of Suitcase Fusion for our font management program.  We are unable to activate our postscript type 1 font (Helvetica Neue Black)  It seems since hel neu is a system dfont that Font Book thinks we already have it activated but HelvNeueBlack is not part of dfont.  So even though I have it in my fonts folder the font is grayed out and am unable to activate.  I might add that HelveBlack is also a problem.  I've read the article by Kurt Lang on Font Management.  I followed his directions on how to remove dfonts from system but caused more problems than it solved.  I would appreciate a certified way to handle these particular fonts.  Do I need to purchase the Open Type fonts to solve problem.

What I did to fix was remove Helv Fractions that cleared up the problem.
It's been quite a while since I've seen that one come up. When you mentioned that some of the type looked like jumbled fractions, that should have jogged my memory. Yes, Helvetica Fractions is long known to be a bad font. Delete it from the hard drive and never reinstall it.
The HelvNeuBlack and HelvBlack fonts you sent are indeed creating conflicts. Here are screen shots of their internal names. HelvBlack first, and HelvNeuBlack second.
In Helvetica Black, the menu name is just Helvetica, which leaves nowhere for the regular Helvetica font to display in your font lists. It also then creates a cross reference between the two fonts. It is also reporting two other different names to the OS for the same font. Helvetica Black, and Helvetica-Black. You can technically get away with doing that, but it's bad practice.
Helvetica Neue Black is the same type of bad naming. The menu name is just Helvetica Neue, which leaves nowhere for the real Helvetica Neue to go in your menu lists. Then they rather oddly threw in Helvetica 95 Black for the full name, as opposed to HelveticaNeue-Black for the other two spots.
Just some really sloppy work here by someone for what I would guess were Type 1 PostScript fonts converted to Mac legacy TrueType. If you don't have the software to fix the names, the only good suggestion is to throw these fonts out and purchase new ones from a vendor who builds fonts correctly. And while they're kind of pricey, that means either Adobe or Linotype.

  • Having trouble transferring iTunes library to external hard drive

I cant seem to be able to copy my iTunes 11.4  library (Macbook Pro) to my External Hard Drive ( Free Agent GoFlex Drive 500 GB). Could I get some help with this? I have tried what it has told me to do on the apple site. It just wont let me drag it to the hard drive.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
To see your iTunes folder click on the Music folder icon in your Finder sidebar.

  • Having trouble installing CS5.5 on lion 10.7.3?

Are you having trouble installing CS5.5 on your mac (os lion 10.7.3)? Are you tired of receiving error reports (i recieved "exit code: 24" numerous times)?  there is an easy way without hacking your mac into bits. start your comouter in security mode (hold down the shift key while your mac boots). Pop the CS5.5 Application 1 dvd into the drive and follow the instructions. no problems. no exit codes. no hassel. no swearwords. just an installation that works. why this is necessary is a mystery to me. but it works. after installing, don't forget to restart your mac in order to exit of security modus and return to normality;)
i hope this helps a few lost souls like me who have wasted hours of their time over the past couple of days. correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't updates suppose to make things work better?

    Hi..
You can disable the Lion resume feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
As for Facebook, select "Keep me logged in" ..   even if the page refreshes, you should stay logged in.
Click on the image once to enlarge.
For help to avoid Safari from auto refreshing pages, go to   ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari.
