I am in font trouble

I'm re-installing Tiger after a huge crash and want to get a handle on my fonts from the beginning. I know I need to start using a font managenet tool because I'm a beginning designer (self-taught) and don't want a load of fonts I rarely use bogging down my system. Unfortunatley, I know nothing about font management tools and am in the middle of a few projects so I can't afford the learning curve as I reinstall. I need to plan so I can implement a tool later (I'm wanting to try FontExplorer X, which sadly has no for dummies manual.)
That explained, is there any way to label or folder fonts as they are installed so I know where they came from? Ideally, I would like to mark them as Tiger Base Fonts, Tiger Additional Fonts, MS Fonts, Adobe Fonts, etc. I tried using the Label option under the File menu, and even the Spotlight Comments section in the "Get Info" windows, but these aren't allowed at the Macintosh HD/System/Library/Fonts level -- or I just don't know how to allow them.
Can anyone help? I can't afford another re-install right now if I mess something up, and my Mac has already been down for 3 days.
Must...get...work...done.
Thanks in advance!

You should never install any new fonts in the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder. This folder is restricted to OS X system fonts. User fonts can be installed in one of two locations: /Library/Fonts/ or /Home/Library/Fonts/. The former is used to install fonts that all users can access. The latter is used to install fonts that will only be accessible to the owner of that account.
As for font management you have a number of alternatives. Font Book is a part of OS X. FontExplorerX is a freeware tool. There are also a couple of commercial products including Extensis' Suitcase, Alsoft's Master Juggler, and others (look for these at www.versiontracker.com.)
Most Mac utilities are pretty easy to learn and rarely require a manual. When in doubt use the application's Help menu. You may also find additional help at the developer's website.

  • FW8 on OSX : UNICODE FONT TROUBLE

    Well ... Hi !
Can someone help me ... I'm new on MAC OSX ... but I use to
    work with FW !
On this OS, FW don't want to let me write with accent :
    é, à, ï ... won't appear.
If I check with popchar the font table, i see that the accent
are in the unicode tab... so I suppose that FW have some trouble
    with unicode font on mac.
    I've read this
    technote, but i didn't
    find this file...
    What can i do ?
    THANX

I don't believe that you can type as you would with MS Word
or Illustrator and have the accented characters appear as you type.
However, you can create a text block and type with the keyboard
normally and when you require an accented character you can insert
one manually from the Special Characters panel as I mentioned in my
    last reply.
One other option is to import your text from Photoshop CS2 or
Illustrator into Fireworks. See the Fireworks help menu for details
of how to do this. Text can be imported and remain editable or even
    used as vector objects.
One final note; you could search for a Fieworks Extension
that may exist for creating the feature that you are after.

  • Font Troubles on MacBook Pro

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and took all of the fonts off of my Mac Pro at home and copied them to my harddrive>library>fonts folder.
Only some of the fonts are working. Others do not work whatsoever in any application (Photoshop, InDesign, Pages, et. al). They are in the fonts folder, but show up as plain file icons.
    Is there something I'm missing?

  • Font Trouble In Classic!

    Hi,
I installed some new fonts in OSX, but when I switch to work in Quark Express in Classic mode, the new fonts aren't available.
Thanks for any and all help!

    Where did you intsall them?
For them to be seen in Classic, they should be in the "Fonts" folder, that's inside the "System Folder."

  • FONT TROUBLE

I recently installed quiet a few fonts onto my MacBook Pro. Some were free PC fonts that have worked on Apple computers before. Using font book I activated and de-activated ones I wanted and didn't want respectively.
At first this was a problem with Safari in that my font was not my default font, as a matter of fact it was a grafitti font that I never used and had de-activated. I remedied that (how I couldn't tell you) but it is still registering as the default font for Flash.
I'm just wondering how to remedy this to get all my default fonts back to normal.
I learned my lesson, these free fonts are all going in the garbage once I differentiate them from the good defaults.
*Note : I do not want to reformat my entire computer, but honestly if that's what it takes, I'm ready for it.

Where did you install those fonts? In your home folder? =Macintosh HD>Users>Your username>Library >Fonts
Or did you install them in the root level library?
    Macintosh HD>Library>Fonts
Or maybe in the System Font's folder?
    Macintosh HD>System>Library>Fonts
IF you installed them in the System fonts folder or the root level library folder you've probably got a font subsitution issue. As a matter of regular practice I would strongly discourage you from installing additonal fonts in the System Fonts folder and to a lesser extent in the root level library folder, but rather your home folder. If you did install the fonts in either of these locations I'd recommend you boot in safe mode by holding the shift key at startup til you see the gray apple with spinning gear and move them to your home folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Font troubles on website

Hello and thank you in advance for any help on this!
I created a website using iWeb'08 using the layered paper template, with GoDaddy as the hosting service and used their ftp.
The problem is that the font I select - Hoefler Text - comes up on the welcome page of the website, with the exception of the navigation tabs - looks like they are in TimesNewRoman. The Hoefler font does not work on any of the other pages - an about us, photo album, and several blank pages. I tried deleting from GoDaddy & re-ftping the files, but same problem. Seems odd that it would work on one page, but not the others. A quick way to notice if the font is correct is that the some fo the numbers are higher or lower than each other. The "Test" page has a few fonts on it
If you can take a look at the site it is www.avantballet.com
Thank you again for all your help!

  • Font trouble in PS CS1 on Snowleopard

    Hi
I am running Photoshop Cs1 on an Imac with Snowleopard (Mac OS X - 10.6.3) with an Intel Core i5 Processor. The problem is that I can only see fonts up to "K" in the list, and then only the "symbols" fontstyle after that. In my FontBook I can see them up to the end, and in InDesign CS1 and Illustrator CS1 I can also se the list to the last font.
Any Idea what I can do to fix this?
    Thank You

This is entirely due to the number of fonts on your system.
I went through this myself when my font library grew to its present size of 4986 fonts.
The first few show up with icon, name and preview, then you only get one of the three for the rest of the list.
I'm pretty sure that it takes a good while for Ps, Id or Ai to fully lauch the Font tool also.
    I found a solution.
The best solution is to get and use a font manager like Suitcase Fusion. Then move all but your base system fonts to a separate library, managed by the application.
Your CS apps will run faster, and since only the font(s) you are using will be activated, the font tool performance will increase dramatically.
Also, CS1 wasn't built to run on Intel, or in Snow Leopard. I'm surprised this is the only issue you're having.

  • IPad and ebooks .epub which fonts trouble free

    Hi.
Does anyone have a CURENT REFERENCE a LIST of FONTS that will work without problems on the popular tablets specifically iPads and kindles.
I am creating an ebook -  an .epub file on my Macbookpro OS X 10.8 using inDesign CC.
I searched the internet, this forum, other forums etc and included 2013 and 2014 in the search terms but I HAVE not found a list.
One tutorial discusses using TrueType Or OpenType Fonts not postscript fonts but although this was a very good tutorial about creating epubs....it is from 2009.
Another article listed fonts for the kindleFire and KindleWhite but I have NOT found a CURRENT LIST for IPADS or iOS.
I Would like to cross reference these lists and USE FONTS that display on both.
I am not concerned with smartphones at this point.
    Thanks.

Does iBook just refuse to recognize any fonts but its own?
I think that may well be correct. It is a closed system and as far as I know does not yet recognize embedded fonts in ePub or css/(x)html (only in the pdf context, or presumably as part of an app).
OS X Safari has supported embedded fonts for two years now, but the mobile version does not.
You can ask for this feature to be added here:

  • Technophobe having Phonetic Font Trouble :( :( :(

    Hi All!
Im currently trying to write my university dissertation and need to use phonetic symbols! I have found a font to download (Doulous Sil) and downloaded it from their website. The folder containing the font was downloaded onto my computer as normal (and can be found in downloaded items box). However, Im not sure what to do now! I've dragged the font into library/fonts and fontbook but can't access it from Word at all I've tried on my ibook G4 and my dads new iMac!
Please help! (As if dissertations weren't stressful enough!!)
    Cheers

I've done it but the font still
doesn't show up in my font list on Word. When I go
into Insert/Symbol there are lots of symbols that
    just have a question mark.....
Are you using WordX? It can't do Unicode and so it can't use modern fonts like that. You need to use Word2004, TextEdit, Pages, Mellel, Nisus Writer Express, NeoOffice, or OpenOffice.
Or you could perhaps use the old pre-Unicode fonts, but I would advise against it as Unicode is the agreed international standard.

  • Font trouble when upgrading to 6i from 2.5 on the HP-UX server

    Hi,
We've recently upgraded to 6i from version 2.5 (developer
2000). Most everything went smoothly except when deploying our
server reports. We use Times New Roman on the PC based reports
and those that are run on the server are mapped/aliased to
Times. Everything worked fine in the 2.5 version. I have
checked the setup of fonts, ppd files, and the like and
everything is correct. In fact looking at the generated output,
postscript (.ps) file, with a text editor you can see that the
proper font has been used. Although, we still get lines that
aren't wrapped, misalignment, centering doesn't work, etc.
If I run the report at the HP-UX console the output looks fine
as, just like the PC windows NT version. It's when the report
is run using the command RWRUN60 that the output is incorrect.
I get the same results when generating postscript or PDF files.
As I said earlier the same application works fine for 2.5
versions. And the correct ppd file and fonts are used. But the
output is skewed. Leading me to believe that there is bug in
the engine that builds the report output in the new version of
the tool. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    thanks
    terry

    Hi.
I am going to start on a new project where
we will convert Reports from 2.5 to 6i.
What's the procedure for converting reports
from 2.5 to 6i? Is it as easy as opening the
2.5 reports in the 6i builder or is a conversion
    needed like running RWCON60?
I hope you can help me on this. Who knows maybe
along the way we will encounter your problem and
we might be able to return the favor.
    Again thank you very much.

  • Fontbook and Font Trouble

    Hi everyone!
I'm a designer and I use fontbook for management. I've been using it like this for over 2.5 years and never had any issues. I keep my fonts that I use for work in a separate directory in a different place in my HD and add them to FontBook. I keep most of them off, and just turn on the ones I will be using.
About 3 weeks ago, I noticed all the fonts were active in all of my applications, even though they still show OFF in FontBook. I've tried all the standards: Repairing permissions, checking the FontBook settings and now I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Needless to say this is making my computer super slow. Does anyone have suggestions?

I used the Undoing Font Book instructions. http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/undofontbook.html In the process of re-importing all the fonts. Will see if it works.

  • Firefox Font Trouble

I can't figure out how to fix this font issue.  The first screenshot below was taken on a Mac and the second was taken on Arch.  It doesn't come across as well as I'd like in the screenshots, but it looks terrible.  The Arch version is gigantic compared to what it's supposed to be.  I've installed every font that I can think of and even tried using the cleartype and infinality packages from AUR.  The font is defined in the stylesheet as: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida,'lucida grande',arial,helvetica,sans-serif.
Here are fonts that I have installed:
    extra/freetype2 2.4.2-1 [installed]

    Any suggestions?

    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … ze_and_DPI
I'm not entirely certain what the DPI should be, but it seems like everything checks out according to that wiki article.  That's the correct resolution, and I did their math to calculate the screen size and got a comparable 363x204.  I'm guessing mine is off due to rounding errors.

  • New iMac- installed Office 2011, default font troubles

A friend just purchased a 25" iMac. All is well, until I install MS Office 2011. I haven't seen this, but she reports font problems (foreign language defaults or file import gibberish, I don't now). Is this a common complaint. The OS is Mavericks.

The font conflicts came from the installation of Office 2011. It installs a handful of old, OS 9 style TrueType fonts that conflict with the newer OpenType fonts installed by OS X. While you already did use Font Book to resolve the conflicts (it turned one or the other off), you should remove the offending older fonts from the drive.
Remove the following Mac legacy TrueType suitcase fonts from the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ folder:
    Andale Mono
    Arial Black
    Arial Narrow
    Arial Rounded Bold
    Comic Sans MS
    Georgia
    Impact
    Tahoma
    Trebuchet MS
Note that the older fonts do not have a file extension, such as .ttf . Font Book doesn't like it when you manually remove fonts from the drive. So after getting rid of the old fonts, do the following to reset Font Book's database.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Shift key when you hear the startup chime to boot into Safe Mode. Keep holding the Shift key until you see a progress bar towards the bottom of the screen. You can let go of the Shift key at that point. Yosemite is a bit different. Whether it's a Safe Mode boot or a normal one, you get the same progress bar. It just takes longer to get to the desktop in Safe Mode. So hold the Shift key until you get to the desktop.
OS X asks you to log in (you will get this screen on a Safe Mode boot even if your Mac is set to automatically log in). Let the Mac finish booting to the desktop and then restart normally. This will clear Font Book's database and the cache files of the user account you logged into in Safe Mode.
All in all, since the conflicts have already been resolved, you don't have to do any of this. But Font Book doesn't tell you which version of a conflicting font it disabled. For all the user knows, the much older fonts could be the active ones, and many newer apps don't work well with non Unicode fonts.
