I am looking to buy an imac but have some questions...

Is it possible to use "windows only" software on any mac? I have some photo editing software that I use that is windows only.
Thanks!
Kari

As Duane mentioned yes you can use Boot Camp which is part of Leopard to boot your machine to either Leopard or Windows. Again as Duane mentioned you will need a license of Windows to do it. By using Parallels or VM Ware's Fusion these allow you to run Windows inside of Leopard, again you need a license of Windows to install. Personally I use Fusion, the performance on my iMac is faster than my new new Windows notebook supplied from work. The main advantage of Parallels or Fusion is you don't need to turn off your machine and reboot into a different OS.
Depending on the Windows software you are running you may find a Mac equivilant and rather than investing in Parallels or Fusion you can invest in that and run everything in Leopard's native enviorment.
If you have a Apple store close by drop in and they can show you exactly what I've described.

  • Looking to buy but have some questions

I'm currently using a Mac Mini and Frontrow, I'm hoping to replace this with the AppleTV but have a couple of questions I hope someone can help with.
    1) Can the screen saver display photos from iPhotos on the Apple TV, same
    way as a Mac does.
    2) I'm looking to export all my movies from EyeTV to the AppleTV format, all
my movies have descriptions in them and I know these are exported to the
AppleTV format. However does AppleTV show you this information when
you browse your movies, I know Front row doesn't
    3) Can you just "copy" movies to the AppleTV or do they have to be synced,
as I have a small drive on my Macbook, it would be great to just copy them
over to the AppleTV and deleted them from my Macbook.
A lot of questions I know but would really appreciate any help

    Slightly differently, I'd say better.

The tv shows some fields on the tv screen, eyetv doesn't always put these descriptions where tv can best use them, however it isn't too difficult to move them around in get info.

No they have to be synced. You can use an external drive for your itunes library though.

  • I am going to buy a GX60 - but have several questions!

    Hello folks,
Im a huge fan of MSI products and have decided to upgrade from my CR630 to a GX60. But I am trying to find out what upgrades I can do with regard to storage/SSDs. I keep finding mixed information and I am struggling to clarify what I am buying. The model specifically I am looking at buying is the "GX60 3CC-296UK".
    So:
    1) Does this have two standard 2.5" SATA bays i.e. one standard 2.5" HDD and one 2.5" SSD? Because I have found one website that seems to think it has one standard HDD and two mSata slots.
    2) I have found another website which claims that it can have one standard HDD and "up to 128Gb SSD". Why is it limited to 128Gb on a particular SATA channel? Or perhaps that some websites sell this with a 128Gb SSD pre installed!?!
    and
    3) Usually when a device has USB3.0, it also has SATA 3. Does this laptop take advantage of the 6gb/s of SATA 3 if I did put a SSD into it? I have found another website which seems to think the laptop is only SATA 2 i.e. 3gb/s.
For anyone who has taken the time to read this, thank you for your time and would greatly appreciate anyones thoughts if they are able to assist!
    Regards,
    Iain

Well It arrived today and sadly I am a little disappointed.
First I have never used Windows 8 before, but couldn't even get into windows without being coerced into making an account with microsoft (not going to happen) and agreeing to terms and conditions with Norton Symantec (again, not going to happen).
So, within minutes - cheerio windows 8, hello windows 7 ultimate. So to BIOS we go! Before I could change boot priorities and what do I find...
HGST 1Tb - yeah not going to happen either.
I didn't spend all this just to be stuck with a deathstar in my laptop. It's like saving up for a BMW 5 series only to find a Renault engine.
I actually had a stopclock running for a laugh. It took 9 mins 23 seconds from opening the box to me removing the warranty sticker to rip that piece of S£%$ HDD out and replace it with a WD Black.
As for the RAM? Something generic would be nice, you know something I can buy another of. A specially made Kingston RAM module with a model number starting MSI - oh goody, so when I upgrade to 16gb I need to buy a whole new set just to get a matching pair.
MSI, I love you to bits - but this is testing my patience and better be bloody good once I get it going...
    1) Get used to it. Windows will keep the windows login authentication (any hotmail.com account works btw) in windows 9 and up. It isn't going away. So have fun when windows 7 loses support in 2-3 years from now.
    2) As for norton.. you could have just removed it, it is not tied to anything with MSI and really is just a standard free bloatware crap you get in any computer these days.
    3) Hitachi has been purchased and fully owned by WD. Your WD Black is simply a HGST these days.
    4) The MSI ram in it, is nothing more but a rebranded Kingston ValueRam, so any Valueram from kingston works as long as it uses the same specs as the laptop.
Also turn of Fast Boot in the Bios to allow the laptop to boot from the DVD, or simply press F11

  • Considering Lightroom, but have some questions

Interested in taking my photography to a new level...currently have a Mac and two Cannon DSLRs. In the past I have used I photo for 'developing' however it is limiting. I have used Photoshop and even taken a class in it at a JC however I find that it is not intuitive for me and am looking for something different....Loved Illustrator when I used it many years ago doing graphic design work so not totally discouraged by Adobe products. Hear someone talking about Lightroom recently and wanted to find out a little more about it...my questions are as follows:
What are people's impressions of Lightroom? More intuitive than Photo shop?
    More functionality than iPhoto?
Does Lightroom work well on the Mac? I have never used any adobe products on the mac, assuming they are similar, but have to ask the question.
Can you buy the software without using the cloud and paying monthly fees?
    Thanks!

Most people love it, once they learn how it works. All editing is non-destructive and adjustments are saved to a database (catalog). You don’t save files as you do in Photoshop or iPhoto. The settings are saved automatically and applied on export.
Lightroom is more like Aperture than iPhoto. But Apple has dropped support for both apps so it’s a good time to consider Lightroom. LR6 is expected very shortly and you can take a 30 day free trial.
Yes works well on Mac OSX
Lightroom is available for outright purchase if you prefer not to subscribe to the Photography Plan ( LR+ Photoshop $9.99pm without any upfront capital outlay) however LR Mobile functionality and synchronization with iPad/iPhone is only available with a subscription.

  • Today i am going to buy iphone 4s . i have some questions.

i wanto to buy   IPhone 4S off contract from apple store , will they sell it to me?  is it a factory unlocked  iphone??  if i need any repairs in the future .what happens if i send it to repair , will they give me a AT&T phone ,   do i need to wait for the "factory" unlocked that is supossed to come in november ?  the last one ,
when there is an update for the iphone, i want to update it. but my iphone is factory unlocked . and i was wondering if it will still be factory unlocked if i updated it?
because i just heard .someone already bought a  free-contract iphone 4s at the apple store. you just need to CONNECT to itunes and then it said," congratulation your iphone has been unlocked"   is it true ?        can someone answer my question?
i am waiting for your question......................
    [ thank.]

That is impossible since every iPhone sold in the USA until the November release will have some sort of sim card in it. What differs is whether you purchase subsidized or not. Once the item is purchased without any subsidy it is automatically unlocked. I've unlocked two so far just by plugging them into iTunes: "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked".
The unlocked packaging will be exactly the same but will have different SKU numbers and will not come with a sim card and will have an ejector tool.
I just had some issues replacing my unlocked phone since it was malfunctioning. They replaced it with a locked unit & then came to the conclusion they are unable to unlock it. I had to return the phone and repurchase another for the unlock to work again. Come Novemeber they will have actual "unlocked" replacements.

  • Considering Airport Express purchase, but have some questions...

    Hi people.
As per title. I'm considering purchasing this in the near future, but although i understand how it works, i just have a few questions...
    1) The unit has a USB port correct? I have an external HD & DVD drive, scanner and printer aswell as my iPod dock running off a USB hub. In theory, i should be able to connect a USB device to the AE to get it to work wirelessly, yes? So would it be the same if i ran the USB hub off it? (USB hub has it's own power supply too).
    2) I have a 2008 Aluminium Intel Mac, all up-to-date. Am i correct in thinking all i need to buy is the AE? Obviously i have the correct equipment to connect to the internet, and the Mac does have airport.
    3) The unit won't be that far away from my Mac-how reliable are the connections? Do they suffer from much interference? And how secure is the connection?
    Any advice or experiences welcomed!
    Dan

    1) - The USB port on the AX is usually a printer only port but I don't see why it would not function with ANY other USB devices. I am using a Time Capsule as the main router with a 500 GB Seagate drive and 3 printers connected (and working!) and supporting 3 AX units. You will have to find connected printers and drives via the Sys Pref ->Network menu (Browse)
    2) - That should be OK. You get the advantage of having a router firewall between you and outside. FWIW, I just sold an Airport Extreme for just under $100 on the "Bay" about the price of a new AX. Lacks an audio out port tho' but supports a USB hub system and passes AirTunes
#) - Security.... once you have set up your passwords properly (big words with U/L case, symbols and numbers) it should be pretty secure to casual evesdropping. RFI - use AP Grapher (free) to see traffic on adjacent channels and choose accordingly.
Hope this makes some sort of sense.......

  • Slower than slow. Not the first I know but have some questions please.

Hello fellow Verizon users. First let me tell you about my pc.  It's second hand,  HP Pavilion, Windows Vista, 32-bit, Windows 7, sp2. Hope this helps. My router is Gateway Westell 7500.
I have been reading the replies to others who have posted that their connections are very slow, but do not understand the replies and don't have the technical know-how to report back all of the info.
There was one link that I did click on where I typed in the IP address and it brought up my router information. All but two headings read that , more or less if you don't know what you are doing..Don't!  However I did write one thing down. One was the down speed which is 3360 Kbps, and the up speed is 864 Kbps. Does this say anything about why my internet is so slow?
In task manager I noticed that there is information .... Processes, performance, CPU Usage and so forth. Although these numbers mean nothing to me, do these stats say anything about why I am having this issue? I was told at one time that the Services tab that shows a listing of the names and status of functions that are running, needs to be cleaned up. Here again, I do not know what these functions are and what they are for.
When I first signed on with Verizon High Speed Internet, everything ran fine and fast.  I have talked to tech support about this and they took control over my pc, but did not fix anything.
Off of the topic, but when I would try to get help on Verizon Help Page, all I'd get is IE Cannot Display This Webpage. Called tech support and they installed Google Chrome.  So what did that do?  Anyway....
Also, when the Verizon Internet Security Suite is scanning while I am online, most of the websites stop responding or it takes so long to open a website that I just shut down.
I am at a loss here and getting ready to trash the thing. Could it be the router, or something else?  I have cleaned up, done defragging, deleted cookies and so forth.
Thanks for reading and for any advice that someone could give to a not so technical user.

Sounds like you've done much of what would cover a slow computer. if the system, booted into either Windows Vista or Windows 7 isn't feeling slow it's most likely something up with the Internet connection. We'll sort that out for you and also work with anything that needs to be tweaked on the PC to get the most out of the service.
We've established one thing already. Your line is synchronized properly for 3Mbps service, which is 3360/864kbps. This also signifies you are on G.DMT ADSL or another ADSL1 standard. ADSL2 and ADSL2+ modes display different sync rates for the same speed.
If you could, can you supply to us a Speed Test from this website: http://web100.rit.edu:7123/  (needs Java) or for that matter, use http://www.speedtest.net/ to supply a speed test? The second site is easier to get results from as it gives you an image link. The first test is often more reliable for testing but you'll need to take a screenshot as lately they haven't been allowing Clipboard access due to tightened browser security.
In addition, if your service feels slow, does it only feel like this during the evening and night time hours or is it like this constantly, even in the morning?
Since you mentioned the machine getting really slow during a VISS scan, that makes me wonder: How much RAM is installed in your system? To find out go to the Start Menu, right click on Computer and then click on Properties. Under "Memory" it will display how much memory the system has, and if there is a certain amount of memory that can be used. Knowing that bit of information would be good too since a virus scan should not cause slow net performance unless the machine itself is loaded down. Your browser should be operating in RAM and using limited disk resources (which virus scans consume, due to Disk I/O).

  • Thinking of switching but have some questions?

I'm thinking about using my upgrade and get the iPhone...I currently have the Blackeberry Tour....I also have an iTunes account...how do I get the phone up and running?  I always purchased a new phone at the store and they set it up for me.  Will all of my information from my BB transfer to the iPhone?  Can this be done from the store or do I have to do it at my with my iTunes account?
    Thanks!

Read the info provided by Verizon for users switching to the iPhone. It will answer your questions and tell you how to prepare.

  • I'm looking to get an iMac, but...

my work requires that I use Windows only apps as well as MS Office programs. I've been told that publisher and excel files made on a mac don't open properly on a PC. Are they actually compatible, and is there a way to run Windows only programs without Windows on the machine? I don't really want to have to partition the hard drive and run in Windows for work.

You've reached the older iMac forum for PPC machines made in 2005 & older.
The newer mac are intel based.
I'm looking to get an iMac, but...
Microsoft offers office for the Mac, on sale today for $79.99.  The file formats .docx, doc, etc. are the same.
    Here is what Microsoft says:
"And since Office for Mac 2011 is compatible with Office for Windows, you can work on documents with virtually anyone, anywhere."
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products
Look under why you will like.
You can run Windows in a special support application called a virtual machine. I'm running xp right.
Have your cake and eat it too!
    Don't miss the free VirtualBox.
"VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. " Runs Windows on Mac OS.
    http://www.virtualbox.org/
With the Intel Macs, you can run Windows in a virtual machine. Folks are cloning their old windows to a Parallels virtual machine.
    Parallels:
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
With VMware Fusion, run the most demanding Mac and Windows applications side-by-side at maximum speeds without rebooting
    http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
my work requires that I use Windows only apps as well as MS Office programs.
    I've been told that publisher
I do not believe that MS Publisher is available on the Mac.
and excel files made on a mac don't open properly on a PC.
This info is out of data.  I've never had a problem.
is there a way to run Windows only programs without Windows on the machine?
You will need a copy of Windows to run in the virtual machine. Some commercial virtual machine implmentation make the Windows application act very simuliar to Mac Applications.
You could look into the free Wine Windows emulater that does let you run Windows programs on the mac.

  • In Hongkong. I want to buy new iMac, But need to sell old one first. Where is good for sell??

    Please help me.
    Please give me a suggestion.
I want to buy new iMac, but need to sell old one.
    About following the info.
How much can sell and where is good for sell?
Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    Total Number of Cores:          4
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)
    1TB harddisk
    Warranty to 02/Aug/2013
    Thank you for your help.

When you sell your iMac, please remember that if you bought Mountain Lion upgrade at the app store, the license is not transferable and you need to erase the drive and reinstall the original system (which was most likely Snow Leopard?). If you don't do that, the buyer can never reinstall Mountain Lion because the license is tied to your Apple ID forever.

  • I want to buy an imac but do I have to buy a mac pro or is everything bult into the imac?

I want to buy an imac but do I have to buy a mac pro or is everything built into the imac?

The MacPro is a tower aimed at professional users. The display is sold separately. The iMac is an all-in-one aimed at consumers (and, well professionals, actually). The computer is built into the same housing that holds the display, optical drive and hard drive. It includes a keyboard and mouse (or trackpad).

Yes the original Install Discs can be replaced for a nominal fee. Call AppleCare, you will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. You can use the AppleCare Contact Info for the phone number on your part of the planet.

Can I synch 2 phones to the same iMac, but have different address books?

If you and your wife have separate user accounts on the Mac, then each of you will have separate libraries to sync. You can them maintain separate address books, calendars, apps, etc.
